Dalang is an industrial area in Shenzhen which attracted migrant workers from different provinces. Other than daily routine work in factories, migrant workers basically have no interest or hobby at all since there is not a single venue for them to do some shopping or even to rest or wander around.

The design school aims not only to provide education to migrant workers so as to upgrade their knowledge, but also to provide retail areas for students to sell their prototype designs. This on one hand allows students to earn some money directly from their regular school days, and initiates the local commercial activities on the other.

We also hope that the school, located along the Dalang river and near urban villages, can at the same time act as a park for the community. By merging the soft landscape into the school, different spots of the site are linked up and the building itself becomes a venue where all migrant workers can gather and wander in their leisure time.
