Objectives Creating a spatial journey of the three diverse spaces by building a

pathway and an entry way that lead to a sequence of the spaces Design response to site, use design principles of hierarchy and repetition

to achieve complexity in geometry, and heightens and puts into light views of nature that are hard to notice without our design.

Organic structure incorporating undulating lines and curvilinear shapes. Dynamic and asymmetrical Abstract Build with minimum cost of materials and labor Consider density of structural elements such as various thickness in

framework Framework to be inspired by the strong roots and framework of trees.

Site

The site is among the three trees. Have huge wind and big shadow. We can have a lot work on those part.

Three tree It is one of the hardest site in this area. But it is the most designable site in this area. Hardest part is the slope, we spend 70% time.

Part of Personal design

Reflection Thinking about the cost, it is part design.

Don’t be limit on one part.

I can have some crazy idea but it need be possible make.

It is start at the three points base on the trees and make the circles. Create a Three Diverse Space Journey:

1. Mysterious and Magical

2. A Space for People to Sit, Reflect and Study

3. Meditative and Serene

Working progress

Because the slope, we need to do a lot calculate for the base. And we change the design because the base.

Page 13: arch 101 final portfolio 2013

Make the stair, because we cannot piling so we need use the other way.

Make the rope tie the tree. Climb really high.

Fight for the wind, we work three time to fix it, because the wind is so big.

Page 14: arch 101 final portfolio 2013

Chair is for the study area so make the chair long enough to but books, and the shape is the same like the pathway, and connect to the wood connect to the pathway and the walls.

The space to let the people Meditative, to connect to the nature and sit will be really comfortable can relax the legs.

narrative Starting the journey, we begin at the bottom of the hill secluded from other sites. We approach tree branches that introduce the materials which we were inspired by. Our group is inspired by the area created within the three trees and the magical qualities it presents. As you make your way up to the site, you will see tree roots on the same plane as the entry staircase. The staircase introduces the main materials of our site, wood. There is a journey of wood relation, from the wood of a tree to construction wood. Walking up to the first spacial journey, we walk into a site map of City College landscape. Nodes are placed in forms of cotton balls to mimic distinguished areas or less distinguished. After being introduced to the landscape, we move on to the next room, the sitting area. Here you can sit, take out a book to read and enjoy the view. It is a resting point before entering your last spatial journey. Sitting Area opens you to an open deck, feeling the wind and experiencing you within the three trees. You can look up and see the intricate designs of the tree's branches that are mimicked in the flooring below. The last room on your journey is a meditative section. Here you can unwind and escape the harsh bulky building of Batmale Hall. We wanted to offer students a place of solitude that is outdoors. The three trees gives a nourishing essence and we wanted to capture this quality for your last experience. To exit the site, you have to reconnect with the sitting space where you will find a drapery to lead you out. The exit is positioned to be the other entrance to other team sites.

Reflection Strength: We have spend many times on this program, but we manage the time really good and have a lot of good ideas come out. we do own part of this team and help each other

Weakness: we have too many ideas so it is hard to choose which idea is best for us. We need to improve skill to work on this project.

Challenge: The slope is a huge challenge, we can’t piling

because it will hurt trees. This project unify too many ideas, so we need think a lot.

conclusion This final project is really hard for us, not only from the design part, also tell us how to work together. It unify all we learn from this semester, using all the ability to make this work perfect. The big design comes from Chun Mei Tan but in many parts we changed, we have many different ideas during the work time. So we change design in order to make the design become best for all of us. But it turn to a small argument, for example the base some think need raise high, some think need lower, both side cannot persuade each other, it end until the end of base part. And it also have many different arguments. Even the arguments make us slow our speed, but we have spent more time on this work. We become a good term after we all realize the time has been limit. So we are in common. The site we choose are harder than the other site, so we need put more time to “fight environment” and better chance to use environment. We cannot use piling to make our design stronger, so we need make the base strong with some other way, it need a lot skill and times. We have three different areas it is hard to unify those area together. Wind is too strong can broke the wall…… There are many questions we solved; design part, time manage part, skill part. We not only develop our design ability and many different ability. Happy on all we have done.

Final thought I like what we did in this project, we learn a lot and improve ourselves. But I feel we can do better, if let we do it again it will become a totally different design. This design didn’t give me feel that content. Comparing the one on my head I feel it still not enough. And we don’t have enough time so some small parts we don’t do well. It is a great experience and it works for me beauty good.
