INTRODUCTION

General Purpose of Study

The internship training aimed to introduce students to the requirements, activities and

operations involved in working in architectural / construction practices. The purpose is to

facilitate the involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural practices

in order to develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law

and legislation as applied to architectural drawings, especially the Building by-laws. Students

will also be exposed to the process of authority submission for various drawings from an

architectural practice and the range of contract documentation produced to support these

drawings.

Via a full-time internship attachment, students will further appreciate the documentation

and report-writing skills required of an employee (architectural assistant / architect) in a

typical architect’s firm

i. Detail Drawings

Detail drawings of planter and façade system of Rest Hotel is given to me after a

discussion with my group. Through this task, I learnt about the standard sizes for

detail drawings (normally A3 but sometimes A2), proper annotation of tender

drawings as well as to create the layout block stating the drawing title, project

title, design consultant etc. I also learnt from the layer setting in CAD software of

my company which work systematically.

Besides, proper hatching pattern should have applied to clarify the variety of

materials of the structure. Moreover, I learnt some technique in construction

detail, for example, a 20mmx20mm groove line of the outdoor beam can

prevent the rainwater to flowing inward the building. At the same time, I also

get known to some construction joining like turnbuckle, C-channel etc.

“God is in the Details”. I gains a lot new knowledge about the details which

make the building work.

ii. Sculptural Model Design The design of sculptural model for Rest Hotel is given to me as a sub task for display purpose as well as presentation purpose for the client. First of all, I propose variety of design of the sculptural model with various type of proposed materials using Rhinoceros and Lumion software. After few discussion with Ar.Masyerin Mohamad Nor, I’ve decide to design the sculptural model in a more clean but clearly express the idea of the building. To come out with a physical model, I contact with different suppliers to get better quotation. From the process of looking for supplier, request for quotation and invoice until payment making, I’m not only learnt about the process to deal with the suppliers but also the communication with the suppliers. It’s a challenging task finding the large sizes of solid timber in the market and to join the steel physical plates together. However, I do enjoy in the model making part. And now, my model making skill is more expert.

Setia Bakti, Damansara Height

Overview:

Site Location: Bukit Bintang

Specification: Private bungalow

Mentor: Ar.Masyerin Mohamad Nor

Task: i) Detail Drawings

ii) 3D Model and Photoshop

iii) Sculptural Model Design

Resource: MMN Architects

Nestled in Damansara Height, the 3-storey bungalow is designed to incorporate the slope on

which it sits. With the client’s parents living next door, a link will connect the two houses.

Inspired by the famous touch-me-not (mimosa pudica) plant, with its highly touch-sensitive

leaves, this popular plant ignited the design concept and aesthetic exploration for the façade

of this ongoing project.

i. Detail Drawings The initial idea of gear system was created by the intern student Cindy and Eelyn. Cindy and I then resolve the gear system of the façade into a detailed drawings. We recalculate the opening area in the space given vertically and horizontally to make the louvers work well without hitting any obstacles. Cindy and I go through many consideration, calculation and readjustment of the system, finally, we carry out a workable façade system. We considered many issues like sizes of gear, length of rod, position of crank, materials of gear etc. It’s a tough job as this should be an engineer’s task, but we have to do it in order to translate our idea well to the engineers for further development. We then translate it into the plan, elevations and sections in the open mode and close mode. We then annotate the detail drawings properly. This task consume a long times but it is worth.

ii. 3D Model and Photoshop To deal with the article about ‘detail’ of the magazine ‘architecturemalaysia’, I was assigned to create a 3D model of the louvers system of Setia Bakti bungalow house showing the façade pattern and function. First of all, I read the drawings to get a better understanding on how the façade works and get the dimensions from the drawings. Then I apply my 3D modeling skill to create the 3D façade system from the plan and elevation with Rhinoceros software as well as to use the Lumion software to create the sun position and sun shading effect. Then, touch up the picture using Photoshop to create the sunset mode and the poetic feeling of the space. Through this project, I get known about such a creative innovation of façade system as well as I’ve strengthen my 3D modeling and Photoshop skills learnt from the senior colleague.

iii. Sculptural Model Design Same as the sculptural model of Rest Hotel, the design of sculptural model of Setia Bakti louvers system is also a sub task the assigned for me to enhance my design skill as well as model making skill. With using of Rhinoceros and Lumion, I come out with initial idea of design which is simple but it cannot show the characteristic and function of the louvers system. After discussion with Ar.Masyerin Mohamad Nor, I finalize my design into a sculpture which accord the idea of ‘less is more’, a simple design yet it well convey the idea of the louvers system. In term of materiality, the sculptural model is designed with metal facades to highlight the façade system while timber is used to avoid the metal façade from being over eye-catching and remain its importance, rather than using the transparent acrylic board which is less showing its importance. To construct the physical model, I’ve try to looking for the better supplier who provide a reasonable quotation. At the same time, I also learnt to talk to the supplier to convey my design for him. I am quite happy with the final outcome of this model.

i. Presentation Document I was assigned to prepare the needed document for presentation purpose. I help to arrange properly and Photoshop the plan area which sanitary fitting located (type A, type B and type C). Besides, I arranged the corresponding sanitary fitting into the proper area. Besides, I also help to arrange the detail (Building construction cost/ Sellable cost/ Lot size etc.) of Kapas Height compare to the previous project in sequence for presentation purpose. I’m not only learnt to prepare the presentation document, but also learnt about the type of sanitary fitting that is needed in different space.

ii. Door Schedule against Section I was assigned to check the door schedule according the door’s dimension which should have a same height to the windows next to it. And also, I have to make sure all the doors are label properly in all six sections and two plans (Podium1 and Podium2). I did found some errors and make correction together with our senior colleagues, Farah and Deni. Throughout this task given, I have a better understand on how the door schedule used as well as gain the knowledge on proper door drawings, annotation, sizes and materials used in specific area.

iii. Detailed Plan I was given with a plain drawing of a plan and assigned to produce a detailed plan of Multipurpose Hall in Podium 1. A proper hatching, annotation, dimension is applied. While doing the detailed plan, I also learnt from its construction joining of wall and did the revision about wall sizes and door width etc.

Others Besides the main task given, I also assigned to do some task like beam checking, which is to highlight the various type of beam to find out the critical beam that might change the space of design. Moreover, I also have a site visit to Lot 47 in Bangsar which is a bungalow house to strength my knowledge on construction. I also assigned to CAD the ceiling plan of Rest Hotel using the floor plan given. Besides, I follow Encik Hameed to DBKL for authority submission purpose. He share some experience and knowledge about the submission with me.

CONCLUSION

This is the first time I work in architectural firm which I really gain a lot of knowledge and

now I have some ideas on how this firm run. Internship over 2 months is too short for me to

really learn into deep, however, I do learnt something new during this 2-month internship.

I love my company as the colleagues are friendly and helpful as well as the supervisor is

always take care of us. In this company with many Malay employees, I learnt to get myself

into their culture and we share our experience too. I’ve improve my communication as well.

If there is a second chance, I would like to explore more in this company. Throughout the 9

weeks internship, now I’m able to recognize and recall authorities’ procedures and

requirements with regards Planning Submission and/or Building Submission drawings. I also

work successfully in small teams and appreciate the resource planning issues that take place

in a typical architect’s practice.

I am now have a very clear pathway of my future after this internship, that’s to work hard in

the architectural firm!
