BLUE SPRINGS SHRINE CLUBBy Fred Harle, P.P.
They always say, “April Showers BringMay Flowers.” Well, here it is April 10th,haven’t seen much rain here in our greatcity of Blue Springs, MO, but you knowwhat, if you are like me those May flowersare already starting to bloom. You knowthe kind I’m talking about, those pretty lit-tle yellow flowers that we spend a smallfortune trying to eliminate from our yardevery year. Yep, they are called dande-lions. If you don’t have any I’ll be morethan happy to bring you some of the onesfrom my front yard. That is just before Itry to get rid of them.
Today Jennie’s brother Kenny and hisLady Emma who live in Warrensburg, MOdrove up to see us. We met at Bob Evan’sRestaurant in Lee’s Summit, after whichall four of us visited the Swap Meet. Wow,what a super extravaganza. An even big-ger surprise was to be greeted by Ill. SirKevin Sleyster and being chauffeured byour Recorder, Mike Wheeler. Upon enter-ing the rear gate we were greeted by thehardest working Shriner I know , NobleMac McWilliams. Try and keep up withthis Noble and you’ll find it’ s impossible. Thanks Mac for all that you do for Ararat.
Let me tell you about our March BSSCmeeting. To begin with, our meetings withNoble Bill Fickle at the helm just get bet-ter and better . Following the usual open -ing ceremonies for our Shrine Club, we getdown to the business of trying to catch thefatted calf so to speak. See picture of ourDivan Liaison Officer, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby followed by alegion of hungry Shriners. We also treatour ladies okay . Please note picture withladies, Carol Newport, Vivian Snell,Marguerite Merryman, and Pat Stansell.
Thank you ladies for continuing to shareBSSC with all the rest of us.
Our President, Bill Fickle arranged aspectacular program for our entertainment.Jordan Mitchell, a member of DeMolay, presented a Ceremony of Life in full form.Wow, super impressive, you could hear apin drop. What a treat to see and hear sucha talented young man.
We treat our dignitaries with respect, and it’s always a pleasure to put out the oldBSSC welcome mat for any and all templeofficers. Please don’t wait for a specialinvite. The door is always open and wewant you to come and join us. See photoof President Bill Fickle, 2nd CeremonialMaster Clarence Kirby, and AmbassadorBud Higginbotham.
Our good buddy Noble Lou Sohn hadsome stents inserted close to his heart andhe is progressing great. He heard aboutPast President Bill Clinton doing okaywith his so he got some.
Last, but also a very important part ofour BSSC team is Noble James Gar gotta. He puts together our club newsletter , sec-ond to none, that keeps all our membersinformed about what’s going to happen, and what has happened. Not only aboutanything and everything in and about ourclub, but other clubs, uniformed units, andour temple in general. If you don’t believeit come see for yourself! BSSC meets onthe 4th Monday night of each month at6:30 pm in the American Legion Buildingon 7 Hwy in Blue Springs, MO. Call us,we’ll tell you how to get here.

At the ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-SEVENTH ANNUAL SESSION OF SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL held in Denver, Colorado over the dates of July 3-7, 2011, a piece of legislation was adopted that changed the long standing prohibition of electioneering by or for any candidate for election in a temple election. The bylaw as amended at this session is as follows:§ 325.11 Election regulations.

A candidate for an elected office in a Shrine temple may print, publish and circulate during the year he is seeking the elected office, a resume consisting of his educational background, his vocational history and his Masonic and Shrine record. Except as provided in the prior sentence, the printing, publication, circulating or distribution of resolutions, letters, telegrams, tickets, email or other devices, by a unit, club, Noble or group of Nobles, suggesting, recommending, opposing or containing the names of proposed candidates for office in the temple is prohibited.
(b) Expenditures Prohibited. The expenditure of money for gifts, favors or entertainment on behalf of a candidate for elected office is prohibited.
(c) Violation. For any violation of (a) or (b), the Imperial Potentate may suspend any offending Noble, and he may declare the election of the officers void and order a new election.

Hospital System HeroesFor the month of September the following Nobles have sponsored children into the Shrine Hospitals. If your name has never appeared in this column, consider getting involved. It will not only change your life, but will be a life changing experience for a child and his family.
Hospital Van DriversIf you are a member of Ararat Shrine you are encouraged to call the Hospital
Transportation Office (816) 923-5429 or (816) 923-1319 and become one of those men who transport our children to the St. Louis Hospital. This will be one of the most rewarding activities you will ever experience.
We encourage every man in Ararat to become a driver. It will require you to go to your State Driver’s License Office and obtain a copy of your driving record. As a mat-ter of fact, all drivers need to bring their records up to date in this manner.
A big Thank You to the following Nobles who have driven the Hospital Van in the month of September!

“Strong Legs Run That Weak Legs May Walk”
This year marks the 87th year the East-West Shrine Games has been more than just a football game. Since 1925 it has been a showcase for the next generation of NFL greats and a priceless benefit event for Shriners Hospitals for Children. The East-West Shrine
Game is the longest-running all-star college football game, combining great football with a great cause and creating experiences for players that will last a lifetime.
The players and coaches tour a Shriners Hospital for Children location before the game. Crafts, games, and other activities bring together college football players and children for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
This year the game will kick off at 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and will be broadcast live on the NFL Network.

Hospital Chairman Ed Stowell is seen at left, with the inside scoop on how recycling your old papers can help us provide transportation to the Shriners Hos-
pitals for “our kids.” The money that is received from re-cycling goes directly to our Hospital Patient Transportation Fund. Use the bright yellow and green paper retrievers in Ararat’s south parking lot. If you have any questions, call the Hospital Office: 816-923-1319.

We would like to share the following story of Peyton Glass, a remarkable young lady who was a guest at the Ladies Luncheon during the Fall Ceremonial on October 8th. Peyton’s grandmother, Jane Glass, was the Guest Speaker at the Luncheon. Below in her own words, she describes how the Shriners have been such an important part of Peyton’s life.
1. Early History• Peyton was born 8/25/1993. She was getting dressed to go home when
it was noticed her body temperature was too cool. Then she was jaundiced and then they noticed she could not suck a bottle.
• Many tests were done, including an MRI of her brain, which was completely smooth…no wrinkles…and the doctors felt no way to learn.
• Her head circumference has always been in the 95 percentile.
• About age 18 months, Peyton was given a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy. She also has a seizure disorder, which was diagnosed much later in her life. She probably had earlier seizures, but an EEG could not detect them.
2. Early Intervention and Shriner’s Assistance• Peyton was referred for services at the age of 10 days.
She began receiving OT services at age 4 months. Peyton was always a “floppy” baby, no muscle tone at all.
• Peyton ate 2 ounces from a preemie nipple every two hours round the clock for the first year of her life.
• At age two and one half, Peyton began receiving services from Shriner’s Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois. This is about the same time she moved from her parent’s home to our home, paternal grandparents. We built a “stander” for her after taking pictures of one at school, and on the advice of the PT at Shriner’s Hospital. She was like a little “frog”; she would not bear weight at all.
• She received services from OT/PT and Speech over the course of the next 14 years. She had three PT’s work with her, Lisa Crowe, Angela Brinkman, and Joe Krzak, and one OT, Leah Bent. Beth Christensen is still working with her via the phone with her Vanguard Plus machine, which Shriner’s helped us get for her. Shriner’s also helped get her two Convaid Cruiser Strollers, like the one she is sitting in today. This really helps us when we have long distances to go, shopping, the Zoo, the grocery store etc.
• The orthopedic doctors, Dr. Peter Smith, also followed Peyton at Chicago Shriner’s Hospital, for 14 years. Thankfully, Peyton has not had any surgeries because her Cerebral Palsy is too loose, not too tight. However,
all orthopedic products, AFO’s, SMO’s and arch supports have been provided to her at no cost to the family. She is still wearing her leather with cork supports in her shoes as she is so flat footed. These orthopedic products have assisted Peyton in her ability to walk.
• Dr. Marianne Larsen, Neurologist at Shriner’s Hospital, also followed Peyton once she was diagnosed with a seizure disorder.
• Peyton also participated in horseback therapy paid for by Shriner’s Hospital. It was a long drive for us, over 2 hours, but we went for 12 weeks
during one summer. I still have two pictures of her during this time. She is very young, and this therapy was excellent for her with her low muscle tone. The gait of the horse forces Peyton to hold her body weight in the saddle. She still rides today when I can find someone that will allow her to ride. It is still the very best therapy we can do for her.
3. ConclusionWithout the aid that Shriner’s Hospital provided for Peyton, she would not be able to do so many of the things she does. One doctor said and I quote “She will never develop, she will be a vegetable.” We have proven with enough determination on her part and those of her caregivers, and Peyton has progressed remarkably well. She learned to hold her head around one year of age. She learned to sit up around 18-24 months of age. She learned to roll over and over to move from one place to another at age 2 ½. We physically taught Peyton to crawl by age 3. She began to stand and bear weight on her legs at age 5 without using a “stander”. We built a stander for her, and we built parallel bars for her to begin to walk. We still have these pictures on the dresser in the master bedroom to remind us just how far she has come. When she was 5 she could stand independently for short periods of time. She took her first steps with a reverse walker at age 7 (walker provided by Shriner’s Hospital). She began to walk independently at age 9. She still to this day does better going upstairs rather than downstairs. She can do it with one hand on a handrail and the other
hand held. She is a “work in progress” and we never say, Peyton can’t do that! She amazes us all the time. At age 12 she said her first word, “ahma” for Grandma. The seizures impact her life greatly, but she has never lost the ability to do the things she has learned…slows her down for a few days, but does not stop her from trying. She is a remarkable young lady that has worked very hard to be the best Peyton she can be! Thank you Shriners for the help you have given her! We love her so much for all her dedication and hard work!
Peyton participated in the Arch Program. Pictured next to Peyton is Jane Glass,
her grandmother.
Remote Controlled Airplane Rescue
Recently, while having a cook-out with friends and a fellow Noble (Bob Churchill), a gentleman drove in my drive asking if I could retrieve his remote controlled airplane that had crashed in a tree at the local
soccer field. The plane was about 60 feet in the air. He asked how much – my normal rate is $125 with a 3 hour minimum ($375 for a $60 plane). He didn’t think that made much sense. Next I asked “do you have any 100 dollar bills?” – that answer was NO. So my next option was “Would you donate $50 to the Shriners?” That answer was YES, so I took a ¼ million dollar crane and 2 retired 101 Operators over to retrieve his plane for a $50 donation.

1st Ceremonial Master Steve Johnson and I had a very insightful Imperial Membership Seminar in Tampa this last
month. We were refreshed on many areas that we always need to keep focused and in-troduced to a new program I’m confident will excite all our Nobles.
The Legacy Program is designed to promote sharing the Shrine experience with family members. The exact details will be forthcoming and a specially designed pin will be available to the Legacy and the top line signer. This program will continue the heritage of sharing the Masonic and Shrine experience from family member to family member.
The overall message form the Member-ship Seminar was not a shocker; get back to your Blue Lodge roots. Imperial empha-sized the importance for all members, start-ing from the top, to start going to lodge again. The Shrine centers that are showing a growth ALL have an active Blue Lodge participation. This is where the Masons are and this is where you’ll be reminded of your
obligations. The spirit and manner in which Nobles treat each other shows a positive re-flection in those Temples who have an active Blue Lodge participation.
It is that time again to remind each and every Unit and Club to elect a Membership Chairman who is willing to come to meetings once a month and participate in Membership activities. More so now, than ever, it will be imperative for your Membership Chairman to be committed and willing to participant in activities to help the Temple grow. We have a very aggressive membership program scheduled for 2012 and Imperial Sir Severe has told us we will be on his radar all year! He expects us to unite and work together towards a positive membership growth this year.
I’ll leave you with this, Membership needs your help. It’s not a one man show. It will take all of us to focus with a renewed at-titude and vigor and we will make a positive difference. But key thought here, I need help. Please contact me if you can commit to being a part of the future of Ararat Shrine.

A mentor is defined in the Oxford Dic-tionary as “an experienced and trust-ed adviser.”
To attract and retain Shriners and their ladies several things need to happen. One of the most important is that they have a feeling of a meaningful role. This requires a proac-tive approach in communicating with new members. Our answer is the mentor program.
Does your temple have an active mentor program?
One of the most critical elements in re-taining great people is effective mentoring. But what does that really mean? The word “mentoring” is too general to capture the specifics of what people need through the different stages of a career. It is akin to say-ing that people need to be educated — and then implementing a teaching curriculum that is the same every year for everyone. Like education, mentorship requires differ-ent things at different stages, including dif-ferent types of conversations and advice, as well as different types of teachers and topics.
Mentorship, delivered in a professional manner, shows that you care. This basic “I care about you” culture is the foundation for effective mentorship. It requires knowing a new noble’s ambitions and capabilities, and his interests and reasons for joining. Finding the answers to these questions, though ongo-ing communication, will allow a mentor to find meaningful ways for a noble to become active within the organization and turn the new Shriner into a career Shriner.
Mentoring never ends, there are always Shriners who need a mentor, including long-time Shriners. In reality, when you think about it, some mentor relationships go on for a lifetime.
Take a moment to think of that special person who has been a mentor to you in your family or work life, I’m sure you have one. When you realize how important that person has been in your life, think about how impor-tant you can be in helping to develop that “I care about you” feeling in a new Shriner. Our fraternity needs your help, please commit to being an effective mentor today.
You can sign up to be a virtual men-tor by visiting the membership section <https://www.shrinersvillage.com/Member-ship.aspx> of Shriners Village and complet-ing the form.

been invited to participate in the ceremonies and several units and clubs will take part. There was a discussion of Temple finances and cash flow, with no decisions made.Captain of the Guard Bill Lutman suggested that the Divan look at Temple demographics in relation to the
distance of Nobles’ homes from the Temple to help us understand the needs of the Nobility.High Priest and Prophet Maurice Camerlynck had nothing to report.Oriental Guide Clarence Kirby asked for a dispensation from attending some club meetings. The Potentate complimented First Ceremonial Master Steve Johnson on an excellent Pub Crawl. There was a
discussion of poor lighting for the event and possible solutions.Recorder Mike Wheeler had no comments. Our most recent water bill was very high, probably due to a leak somewhere between the meter and the build-
ing. The leak has not yet been located. The Cornerstone fund is low and Divan members were requested to suggest that Units and Clubs donate to it.Treasurer Mike Allen has opened an e-mail account for comments on the budget and finances. There was a discussion of some vituperative comments on several occasions from members of the Nobility.
There were no solutions or preventative measures proposed, except that civility must reign. Chief Rabban Richard Floyd reported on Circus revenue to date. The success of the sponsorship program was
also discussed.First Ceremonial Master Steve Johnson reported that the IT network evaluation project has been completed,
and documentation will be delivered soon. Some procedural changes may be suggested.Second Ceremonial Master Dan Smothers said that he had no comments, and then reported that the Festival of
Champions is in good shape with 35 high school bands registered this year.Marshal Randy Berry mentioned that two Shrine Clubs were interested in merging, but had some questions.
Discussion followed.Captain of the Guard Bill Lutman discussed an accidental alarm at the exterior door of Room A & B during
the Oriental Band Party on October 8. A telephone malfunction contributed to the problem. He also told of attend-ing a Swap Meet at Versailles, MO. In view of the success of that Swap Meet, it might be wise to enlarge our Car swap meets to include other items.
There was a short discussion of participating in more parades. Outer Guard Henry McDaniel had no comments other than agreeing with opening the Swap Meets to other
items. There was a discussion of presenting the Arch Degree outside of the Shrine. Chaplain Loyd Gentry remarked that he perceived some members of our order that want the fraternity to
fail. His concerns were well received. Chaplain Loyd then gave the benediction and the meeting was adjourned.

We finally had great weather for ourmeeting in April: no rain, no snow, no 20degrees and windy! Not that the weatherhad ever discouraged our members. Wehad the same great turnout, be the weath-er good or not so good!
Dignitaries attending this month wereLiaison Officer Dave Bushakra and LadyMolly, and Ambassador Curt Karnes andLady Sue. These two couples truly repre-sent good works and good fellowship forthe Shrine and we look forward eachmonth to seeing them.
We were happy to welcome back Daveand Nora Hutchison. They brought backa “truckload” of fish and invited us to theirhomefor the June meeting and a fish fry!
Dave, incidentally, won the 50/50 draw-ing, but that was in no way connected tothe invitation. We would never use anysort of bribery to get Dave and Nora to fixfish for us!
Our guest speaker was Sally Nance,Administrator for the Excelsior SpringsHospital. She gave us a brief history onthe hospital and all the improvementsthey have made, and the new independentliving center completed recently.
Our May meeting will be held again atCatricks Café in Lawson. Tell yourMasonic friends what fun and fellowshipwe have, and bring someone with you tothe next meeting.

At almost every Ceremonial, we have a First Section, a Second Section, and then the Arch Program. Many
of us have not seen the Arch Program, and we should. The Arch Program strives to teach new Nobles, their Ladies and even their guests, who we Shriners are, what we do, and how we do it. The production runs about 40 minutes.
The Arch Program is the brain child of Illustrious Sir Howard McHenry, P.P., with the collaboration of Noble Dr. Jerry Cook, and, probably some others. It all began with a conversation at a Texas Shrine Association event in 1998. Ill. Sir Howard came back to Ararat convinced that the idea of a new ceremonial ritual had merit. After consult-ing with Shrine headquarters, McHenry and Cook started the process of idea development and script writing. This new ritual was to in-clude the traditions of the Masons, Scottish Rite, and York Rite, as well as the Shrine. The entire process was monitored by Impe-rial Recorder Jack Jones, and in November, 1999, the Arch Production was adopted as an alternate Shrine ceremonial program. Ararat Noble Herman Sharhag, an architect was en-listed to design the Arch, and Ararat Past Po-tentate Don Price built the Arch for the first performance at Sesostris Shrine on January 29, 2000. Noble Price continues to build the Arches for other Temples that may want one.
The Arch performance integrates Ma-sonic and Shrine principals, features and values into an educational and entertaining production. Cast members dressed in an-cient Egyptian costumes evoking images of pyramid builders, build the Arch while the ritual cast narrates the script, supported by music and lighting effects. The main attrac-tion features a child who has been treated at one of our hospitals. Modern language and
interpretations are used, and the cast mem-bers, except for the builders, will be dressed in modern tuxedos. The objective of the en-tire production is to create a positive image of the Shrine and Shriners Hospitals.
The second Arch Program presentation was at Moolah Shrine on April 15, 2000. A team of 27 Nobles from Ararat and 55 Nobles from Moolah joined forces for that presenta-tion. On October 6, 2000, 22 Ararat Nobles traveled, at their own expense, to Tampa and presented the degree at the Imperial Mem-bership Session. In August of this year, the degree was presented to all three Shrine Temples in Oklahoma and the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma.
The main attraction of the presentation is the construction of a large arch while the Narrators tell the story of Masonry, York Rite, Scottish Rite and the Shrine. Each part of the narrative is accompanied by the placement of a stone in the Arch. The Shrine narrative is longer and in more de-tail than the other parts, covering the history of the Shrine from its beginnings through a description of our hospital system. At the completion of the narrative, the Child/Patient is wheeled to the Arch in a wheel-chair, and is then carried through the Arch by a Noble in the manner of the “Editorial Without Words.” “My Old Red Fez” is then recited, followed by the “Shriners Creed.” The program concludes with the introduc-tion of the cast.
The Arch Program has been presented many times for various groups, and has met with great approval from virtually every-one. The few minor complaints have been, or perhaps are being, addressed, to ensure that the presentation meets its objective of creating a positive image of the Shrine and Shriners Hospitals.

& Most of us are overwhelmed by the
vast number of choices at the local wine shop or the liquor aisle in the
supermarket. There are thousands of good wines to choose from, and all you have is the label as a guide. I can’t resist a wine with a cute name like “Little Black Dress,” but that’s really a pretty poor way to select a good wine. Sometimes the price doesn’t mean much, ei-ther.
We have only three methods for choos-ing a wine. First, we choose wine based on our experiences. Second, we choose based on empirical evidence combined with expe-rience. Third, we rely on recommendations from someone we trust.
Our own experience will lead us to buy another bottle of something we liked when we tried it before. Of course, you don’t have many new experiences or surprises. If you buy only Black Box Cabernet Sauvignon, you’ll never find a good Missouri Norton.
Empirical data is the reasoning you use when you know that you like Cabs, and Napa Valley produces good Cabernet Sauvignon, and 1997 was a good year, so you buy an unknown label from known area and a good year. At least you may find another label that you like, but you still won’t try a Pinot Noir.
If you know someone who knows more than you, ask them for their recommenda-tions. Never underestimate a personal rec-ommendation from a friend that loves wine. Frequently, the manager of the shop where you buy your wine will be your best expert. Trying new wines is one of the greatest joys in life, but try to avoid buying new wines simply because they have a high point rating. Always remember that a point score is awarded based on one person’s tastes, which may or may not suit your own. Use what you know and the people that you trust, and your wine buying experiences will become more rewarding. You won’t always pick a winner, so just remember that even a bad bottle teaches you, at the very least, what “not to buy” the next time.

Lafayette County Shrine ClubBY rON EllING, SCrIBE
The Lafayette County Shrine Club met October 13 at the Victorian Peddlar in Lexington for a delicious fried chicken
dinner. There were 22 Lafayette County Shri-ners and ladies present for the meal. President Delmar Dothage welcomed Liaison Officer and Marshal Randy Berry and his Lady Shan-non; Assistant Director of Uniformed Units Tim Rechterman and his Lady Linda; Shrine Club Director Charley Swafford; and former Ambassador Ken Sisemore and his Lady Mary.
President Dothage presided at the meet-ing. He thanked Tim Rechterman for presid-ing at the last meeting in his absence. He also welcomed Mike Graff and Alvin Kallenberger from the Richmond Shrine Club and Keith Stoneking as a new member. Officer nomina-tions were discussed. Tim Rechterman moved that the officers continue the same as this past year. It was seconded. Election will take place at the next meeting. President Dothage then called upon Mike Graff for his presentation about the possibility of the two Shrine Clubs joining. President Dothage announced that protocol must be followed in this decision. A letter will be sent to members announcing the possibility of this merger before an actual vote will be taken.
Nobles and Ladies in distress included our Ambassador Curt Karnes who is in the Liberty Hospital, Lady Virgie Stratton who had been in the hospital, Bill Eastridge and Ben Lewis and his Lady Janet.
Ambassador Sisemore announced the upcoming calendar of Ararat Shrine events in the absence of Ambassador Karnes. Upcom-ing events include the Festival of Champions Music Bowl at Warrensburg on October 29 and also the Ararat Temple Halloween party that evening. The Ararat Shrine Circus will be held November 17-20. Bingo is held weekly on Thursday evenings. All these events could use help from the members. He urged members to read the Ararat News. Shrine Club Direc-tor Charley Swafford discussed the Richmond Shrine Club and what they have done in the past. Assistant Director of Uniformed Units Tim Rechterman reported on the parade held at the Versailles Apple Festival and how appre-ciative the crowd was to the Shriners. Marshal Randy Berry reported that the Potentate will work with the Lafayette County and Richmond Shrine Clubs in whatever decision is made re-garding a possible merger. He also talked about the Ararat Shrine Circus and how many chil-dren and people attend that may not have an opportunity to participate in very many activi-ties that are fun.

The seasons, they are a changing. Getting out and kicking around the countryside can reveal some totally awesome scenery. The Supreme Creator really shows us what he can do season after season. Here’s hoping you are in good stead with him and his plan
for you. It’s also that time of the year that our different clubs elect the new officers for a new
year. It’s a privilege to serve when you have an impact on the survival of our fraternity. Your ideas and leadership gets us through the new year. “You” make the difference, so step up and be a part of the club in which you are a member.
Thank you to our volunteers for the monthly breakfast. The October breakfast fell on a Fun Kor parade day and we were shorthanded, but our volunteers rose to the occasion and the breakfast was a success. Thank you for your diligent support.
For those Fun Kor members who were able to make it to the Versailles Apple Festival Parade, wow, what a crowd! That kind of public turnout really makes you proud to be a part of the show. Thank you Bill Lutman, Clarence Kirby, Tim Rechterman, Todd Hill and our Boonville brothers for the turn out. Kudos guys. Attaboys for the Sedalia Shrine Club Fun Kor.
For those Fun Kor members who want to attend our Christmas Dinner, please contact Stan Schierholz so he can order the appropriate amount of prime rib. Also, remember the Sedalia Christmas Parade on December 3rd.
Our November Board of Directors Meeting has been moved up a week to November 16th because of its proximity to Thanksgiving. The November Membership Dinner will be the 17th of November.
Congratulations to David Palmer and Gordon Yonce for taking 1st place in our Bill Morris Memorial 5 Iron Tournament. 2nd Place finishers were Pat Weir & Becky. Thank you to all of our contestants for the turnout. These late year tournaments are a plus for our golf course.
We ask that you remember our sick and disabled in your prayers and a special prayer for those volunteers who are in harms way in service to this great country. Remember our special children and the doctors and nurses who serve to make these children whole. Never Forget why you became a Shriner.

We started the eve-ning at 5:30 PM with a busy social hour and then at 6:30 PM had an excellent Fried Chicken dinner with mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, plus several salads and dessert – wow, what a feast. Next month we will have Ham. Come enjoy a meal with us.
Prior to dinner Noble Bert Torrey (glad to see you back Sir) led us in prayer and then Noble Vice President Dave McLaughlin led us in the Pledge of Alle-giance. Thanks Guys,
President White opened the meeting at 7:15 PM.
Introductions: Assistant Director of Shrine Clubs Art Kinder and his Lovely Lady Janet.
The Ladies stayed with us for the eve-ning and advised us that they had a suc-cessful garage sale and thanked all who participated especially Ron & Bev for let-ting their house be the point of sale.
We then discussed the upcoming Pub Crawl and Howard & Kathy Silvers again stepped up to the plate to man a table for the Club and our computer pro Pat Hoesly will provide us with some cards inviting the new nobles to come join us for a free dinner.
Howard then reminded us that the week of the Circus will be busy as we have to get the float out in front of the au-ditorium on the 16th then on the 19th we will have to pack it up after the start of the
afternoon matinee, move it to Zona Rosa to bring in Santa Claus ( a nice fund raiser for the club plus wonderful PR) and then get it back in front of the auditorium be-fore Sunday’s shows start. We will need all available hands to pull that one off.
Just a reminder next month will be elections for new officers. Please show up and let us know who you want to lead YOUR club for the next year.
Membership, we truly miss not seeing many of our old friends from the club. If you haven’t been to a meeting in a while come on back and see us. We miss your company and need you to keep our club ac-tive and functional.
Assistant Club’s Director Art took a few moments and reminded us of some of our upcoming events and the part we all play in them. He also let us know that he would not be returning next year as our As-sistant Director of Shrine Clubs. Thanks for your time, Sir, and know you will AL-WAYS be welcome at our functions.
Speaking of Parades and Circus don’t forget that the uniform has changed and we are wearing our red shirts with navy blue pants. If you don’t have your shirt yet let us know so we can get with our Quarter-master (Ron Owen) and get one for you.
Noble President White also asks if you can please make it to the Temple Meet-ings and wear your Northland Shirt or Fez.
Again, if you want some good food and want to meet some good people come on by our next meeting, November 1st at the VFW in Claycomo. Come join us for dinner before the meeting and visit with old and new friends. Hope to see you there!!!

The Legion of Honor was organized in 1952 to accommodate all eligible ex-service men and veterans of the Armed Forces who were members of Ararat Temple in good stand-ing, for comradeship and fraternity, and to encourage and promote activities appropriate
for ex-service men, and to support the Shrine.Today the Legion of Honor is still an active unit that provides the Color Guard at the
opening of our monthly stated business meetings, and participates in all the parades. The pride they have for their country and the Shrine shows in the eyes of every member of the Unit.
The members of the Legion of Honor urge all Nobles to wear their old service uniforms at our November 9th Business Meeting. All Veterans should wear your military uniform or any part you can, plus ribbons and decorations. You don’t have to be a past serviceman to honor veterans. Wear a flag pin or ribbon, anything patriotic is fine.
With our nation at war now for several years, Veterans Day commands our overwhelm-ing respect and honor for the young men and women who have served and are serving over-seas. And for those thousands of killed or wounded, we remember a debt that can never be repaid… BUT SHOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!
A Big Salute to the Members of
The Legion of Honor
Greetings from the Jackson County Shrine Club. November will be our election month. Remember to be there
as we elect our officers for the ensuing year. Every vote counts.
We have made a lot of positive and good progress in the past years. We must keep mov-ing in the right direction, but lately there has been a lot of distrust and rumors going around. I personally think that some of us are forget-ting some of our Masonic teachings such as in our 3rd degree obligation not to cheat, wrong or defraud a Lodge of Master Masons or an-other Brother Master Mason. We all sealed that by kissing the Holy Bible. Or the five points of fellowship that we were all taught af-ter we were raised. The fifth being if you can-not consciously speak well of a Brother you can at least be silent.
With that being said I have a letter from a young man that pretty much sums up what it means to be a Shriner. It’s letters like this that we all do what we do. It’s not about the prestige of being a Shriner or even the pa-rades, although there’s nothing better than a good parade. It’s all about the kids.
My name is Hunter Oakes. I am 13 years old and am sponsored by the Abdallah Shri-ners in Overland Park, KS. On August 2, 2011, I had surgery at Shriners Hospital in St. Louis to correct my legs and feet. Dr. Perry Schoe-necker rotated the fibula and tibia in both legs and flattened both of my feet. When I came out of surgery I had 2 plates, 17 screws, countless staples holding my feet together, and 5 pins. I have had all the pins removed but will have the plates, screws and staples for the rest of my life. I am currently wearing “moon boots”
to protect my feet and am able to walk a little with the help of a walker.
The things I have missed most during my recovery are going to my bedroom and at-tending DeMolay meetings at Frank S. Land Chapter of Ararat Shrine, Kansas City, MO.
The Shriners have changed my life. I live next to a Shriner, who incidentally got me started with DeMolay. I have gone to the Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis for as long as I can remember. They have helped me there so much that I cannot thank them enough.
The surgery has changed my life. They not only straightened my feet, but thanks to that my legs have been straightened too. The doctors and nurses at Shriners are the best. The reason for this is that they work there be-cause they want to, not for the money,
My family and I would like to thank all Shriners for their tireless support of the net-work of Shriners hospitals. Without this sur-gery, I was facing a life in a wheelchair.
Wow, that last line pretty much says it all. It doesn’t matter what temple sponsored him. What matters is that a Shriner saw him and came up to his mother and said, “I think I can help.” That is what matters. When he was born the doctors told his parents that he would probably never walk. They forgot to tell him that.
I never thought that I would say that a 13 year old young man is my hero, but he is.
Remember brothers, it’s not a one man effort or a one club effort or a one unit effort, or even a one temple effort, but together we can make this world a better place to live, one child at a time.

Greeter NewsBY DArYl krAUSE“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter”.
I first want to thank everyone who came up and gave me such a positive response to my last article. It gives one a warm feeling inside
to know what they have tried to accomplish for the Shrine Greeters is approved of. This has led me to this article about accomplishments.
To start with I want to say a few words about, Past Potentate, Illustrious Sir Dave Gordon. Here is a leader and noble that has accomplished many things for our Shrine. Yet his biggest accomplishment has yet to be achieved. At the last Greeter meeting Dave addressed the recent rumors of his cancer with a confirmation. He then went on to tell us that despite hearing all kinds of exaggera-tions to the story, he is on top of the situation and has every intention of beating this thing. Dave told everyone not to believe all the sto-ries that might be going around. I believe his words were something along the line of, “If you’re not hearing it from me you’re probably not getting the facts.”
Illustrious Sir Dave, I am sure that all the Greeters and Shriners join me in saying that we wish you well in this battle and look forward to the day when we can say you have accom-plished defeating the cancer. We are all stand-ing by you and Lady Sandy to help in any way we can.
Next, a BIG Thank You goes out to all the Greeters that volunteered to lead the social events of the Greeters this year. I have already mentioned some of these events and nobles in previous articles but because of the success-ful accomplishments I think they are all worth mentioning again:• Greeters Leadership Team: President/
Doug Urie, Secretary/Don Wilson, Trea-surer/Mike Whiteside and Director/Chuck Hotchkiss
• Fish Fry Team: Rodney Pittsenbarger and Dave Daniel
• Picnic Team: Leroy Graham, Mike White-side and Bob Shackelford
• Breakfast Team: Ron Griep, Butch Pugh and George Underwood
• Steak Fry Team: Bob Rojas, Ian Ramage and Boyd Williams
• Fall Outing Team: Chuck Hotchkiss• Formals Team: George & Dee Underwood,
Bruce Brosco and Herb Gronemeyer• Refreshment Team: George Thompson,
Marvin Cleveland, Jack Mote and Jim Mc-Guire
• Greeters Support Team: All the GreeterettesFinally, I think a big recognition for ac-
complishment with the Greeters should go out to a noble who during the mid-year was in-serted into his present position without much chance to prepare due the untimely loss of another noble. In jumping into this position, to my belief, he has not missed one Greeter Function. At both the Breakfast and Steak Fry he jumped in with his own equipment and did a tremendous job helping cook. In a very short period of time he has become one of the Greet-ers largest assets. Of course I am talking about the Divan’s Greeter Liaison, Oriental Guide, Clarence “Kirby”.
I look forward to seeing our organizations re-growth as “Kirby” and the other members of the Divan progress through the line.
Because of the accomplishments this year by these nobles I can say…“It’s Never Been Greater To Be An Ararat Greeter”
2006 Temple Meeting
14 | ARARAT SHRINE NEWS NOVEMBER 2011
Last month’s heading was incorrectly listed as October Temple Meeting Notes instead of September. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
Illustrious Sir B. J. Richardson called the Oc-tober, 2011, meeting to order at 7:31 PM in the Frank S. Land Ballroom.
Chief Rabban Richard Floyd, who was in the second row of the audience because of his knee surgery, informed the Captain of the Guard of the impending proceedings, who, in turn, informed the Outer Guard.
Captain of the Guard Bill Lutman re-ported that our Temple was under a double and trusty guard.
Chief Rabban Richard Floyd, or some-body, said he was satisfied that all present were Shriners, and then informed the Potentate that our Temple was free from jeopardy as there were none present save members of our order. Confusion reigned supreme.
Oriental Guide Clarence Kirby prepared the Altar.
Chaplain Loyd Gentry remembered our Nobles who had been visited by the Black Camel and gave the Invocation.
The Legion of Honor presented the colors, accompanied by the Concert Band.
The assembled Nobles recited the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance and the Ararat Concert Band played the National Anthem.
There was an alarm at the outer door, and Donald McRoberts, winner of the television raffle at the Potentate’s Golf Outing, accepted his prize. He made a short speech, telling us of his experiences with Shriners’ Hospitals for Children.
The Casbah Darlin’s, the Ladies Auxil-iary of the Oriental Band, presented a check to the general fund. The check represented the amount the Casbah’s were not charged for re-furbishing the Sphinxes at our front door. The sphinxes were donated by the Casbah Darlin’s in 1983.
The meeting was called back to order, and Recorder Mike Wheeler reported that there were no petitions for creation or affiliation. There was one petition for restoration. And no demits or remissions.
Illustrious Sir B. J. announced that the Temple had received a $2,000 water bill for the month of September rather than the $800 charge that was more common. The first thought was that we had a leak, but subsequently revealed that we had been charged for usage of 110,000 over the period of CSSA when there was very little activity at our Temple. We now believe that we are the victims of a theft. So far, no-body knows how one would steal 110,000 gal-lons of water, but the investigation continues.
Treasurer Mike Allen gave the Treasurer’s Report, which showed that we are still sol-vent. Obviously, the September utilities bill was about $1,200 higher than normal. Bingo revenues for this year-to-date are slightly be-low the figures for the same period last year, as are receipts from the Swap Meet. Total General Fund revenues for the year are down slightly. Fortunately, expenses for 2011 are also less than 2010, leaving us with a greater “profit.” The Restaurant still shows a deficit. The restaurant revenues are down about 30% from last year, largely due to fewer events held in the temple. Expenses are also down, but by
only about 15%, which is probably a reflection of the fixed expenses of running a restaurant. Overall, revenues are down about 10% more than expenses.
Noble Ian Ramage presented a check rep-resenting the profit from concessions operation at the Fall Swap Meet.
Noble Doug Urie, of the Grandview S.C., presented a donation to the Transportation Fund in memory of Lady Naomi Johnson and Noble Dennis Grady. He also presented a donation to the Free Friday Fund.
Noble Doug also presented a donation to the General Fund from Cathy Gosnell, of Sil-pada Jewelry, who spoke to the Greeterettes and made a donation.
John Ropcke made a donation from the Golden Valley S. C. to the 2011 Circus.
Northtowne Automotive made a donation from a Shriner’s purchase of a new car.
A financial review session for Nobles will be held on November 4 in Room A & B. Please e-mail questions, in advance, to [email protected].
No visitors were registered.Chief Rabban Richard Floyd presented
Circus jackets to Nobles William Owsley, Lee Brown, Fred Harle PP, Jim McGuire, Ron Nut-ter, and Curtis Wilson.
Assistant Rabban Wayne Spencer re-ported that the Swap Meets did not produce as much income as in past years. Neverthe-less, the Swap Meet team did get it done! He thanked all nobles that took part.
Second Ceremonial Master Dan Smoth-ers, subbing for First Ceremonial Master Steve Johnson, reported on a successful Pub Crawl
and Ceremonial. A very good group of newly created Nobles in attendance was recognized.
Chairman Mike DeGraff reported on the Potentate’s Golf Outing, at which the Potentate had a good time. Noble Mike said that it was a great course, in great shape, and our Potentate hit a long drive. The final financial report is not yet complete.
Noble Buck Johnson, Bingo Chairman and Class Honoree, told us that the Bingo games are not as lucrative as he would like, and then presented a $5,000 check to the Gen-eral Fund. The players contributed $582 to the Hospital Transportation Fund.
All of the new Nobles in attendance put name tags in a hat, from which three tags were drawn. Nobles Brad Bunnell, Robert Yocklin, and Marvin Schreiner won gift cards for restau-rant food and drink.
Noble Bert Torrey, Assistant Hospital Chairman, said that September had been a light month for air transportation, with only one flight to Philadelphia. Van trips were made to Cincinnati and Chicago, as well as St. Louis. We had a meeting with the school nurses from the schools of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph, and received two phone calls request-ing further information on the next day.
Membership Chairman Rod McGrath was out of town, so there was no Membership re-port.
Worker Appreciation Night will be held on November 11.
The Greeters Fall Formal Dinner and Dance will be held on November 12.
Chaplain Loyd gave the benediction. The meeting was adjourned at 8:49 PM.

Provost NewsBY BIll HUFFMAN, SCrIBE
Noble Waco Dohn is a Kansas City native, born on July 20, 1941. After attending Central High School, like many young men at that age, Waco wanted to see more of this great country. The
least expensive way to accomplish that was to hitch hike, working as he traveled to support his journey. His ventures took him to California and then back to KC, Colorado and back to KC, and to many other places that Noble Dohn wanted to see. That care free life, seeing places that many will only dream of, is something that has crossed the minds of most of us.
In 1964 Waco lost his Mother, and her passing brought about a change. To quote Noble Dohn, “I became a member of the lunch bucket crowd.” Not long afterwards, he started learning the roofing trade, and worked as a Union roofer for the next 33 years. This was all commercial roofing, and was all flat roof work, a tough way to go anytime.
Noble Dohn and his Lady Sandy are the proud parents of two sons, Virgil and James. His Top Line Signer for the Blue Lodge was Bob Gage, and Lodge #76 gained a new
Brother. This took place in 1997. In 1999 Waco became a Shriner. His Top Line Signer was Jerald McDaniel. In the years following Waco joined The Harem, Oriental Band, and the Jackson County Shrine Club.
He worked his way through all of them, and eventually was President of all three. In 2005 Noble Dohn joined the Provost Team, worked Temple security for the next
five years, and in 2010 became the Assistant Provost Marshal under then Provost Marshal Noble Bill Lutman. This meant being responsible for inside and outside events. And as our Provost Marshal Charles DeGroff once told me, much of his success is due to “surrounding himself with people smarter than himself.”
Noble Dohn and Lady Sandy have a nephew who currently receives much needed help from Shriners Hospitals, and wears a prosthetic foot. This takes their involvement to an even more personal level.
To all of you who are members of the Provost Team, there are 11 MEMBERS out of over 250 currently covering Temple security. Others are involved on Outside Events, and although it has been said many times, YOU ARE BADLY NEEDED. You can find Waco at the front desk on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the evenings. It would ease the load tremendously with an addition of 9 more Provost Team Members answering the call for their chosen cause.
Noble Waco would like to offer thanks to Nobles Bill Lutman, Ben Kenney, Leonard Huff, Charles DeGroff, and all who were a part of his mentoring during his time as a mem-ber of the Provost Team. He isn’t looking for accolades, but would appreciate your help Brothers.
Until next time, God Bless.

Rakla Shrine ClubBY ErNIE TAYlOr, SCrIBE
Our September meeting missed the dead-line for the Ararat News, so this is a re-port from both September and October.
Both meetings were held at the home of President John Foster and Lady Kay. Some were not back into the fall swing of things yet, so attendance was not up to our usual numbers in September, but when they heard about the delicious offerings from the grill prepared by some of the nobles, along with the great home-cooked covered dishes furnished by the ladies, we had quite a turnout for October! We also welcomed our Ambassador Curt Karnes and his Lady Susan. They are a delightful couple and Ararat, as well as our club, is fortunate to have them represent the Shrine at our meetings.
As the days get shorter and the tempera-ture drops we all stop to review the passing of summer. We ask ourselves, “Was it a success? Did we have fun? What did we accomplish? Did we extend a helping hand to a needy child or a smile to a lonely person?” Thank you Lord, for letting us walk in your world!

Well, here we are in the month of May, which meansthe parade season has started. Hope that everyone hada good time at Missouri City and Richmond.
Let’s go back a couple of months for a minute. InMarch, Noble Art Kinder brought his grandson to O.B.rehearsal. We all got to meet him and made him welcome. He really seemed to enjoy watching his granddad play, however I think that might have made Art a little nervous.Art had said before we got started that his grandsonwas here visiting from Canada. It seemed to me that wemight have a future Master Mason in the works.
On a sad note, that month we also lost our last char-ter member of the O.B., Noble Loren Lundy. Hepassed away at the young age of 100, a milestonewhich he turned last August. All our prayers and goodwishes go out to the rest of his family. He was oneNoble that stood out above the rest in every way possible. He is truly missed.
Next we have a little bit about the O.B. SpringDance. It may not have been the best turnout we haveever had, but President Waco still did an outstandingjob. He made sure that those who did make it reallyhad a good time; so, “Hats off and job well done,” toour President. And let’s not forget our ladies for having the Silent Action in the back of Bennett; “A
GREATBIG THANK YOU,” from President Wacoand the rest of us as well.
Now how about the month of April? Hmmmm, let’ssee! It was reported that our President Waco, who alsoplays the bass drum, is very versatile. He can scratchhis back with one hand and continue to play well withthe other. Who knew?
On another note, the O.B. would like to welcomeback Noble Don Lanning. He took a trip to Englandfor a little while but had to come back because he didnot have a visa to be able to stay longer. He said that hewas having a great time over there with his wife, andgot to go and see his son as well. So all in all the tripmay have been short but the time was well spent.
Just to touch a little bit on the Swap Meet, the O.B.had a pretty good turnout to help in all areas from thepop wagon to picking up trash. President Waco wouldjust like to say, “THANKS GUYS.” He couldn't havedone it without us. Saturday was the best day. It wascrowded but we all managed to make it through.Sunday was not as busy, but still a pretty good turnout. So from the nobles of the Oriental Band to all of thenobles that were able to make it, GREATJOB! Hopeto see you in the fall for the next one.
Til then, be safe.

By the time you are reading this, we will be just days away from the Shrine Circus coming to town. For you new Nobles that just came into the Shrine during the Fall Ceremonial, this is an excellent opportunity to help with the Circus, meet more of your fellow Nobles
and have fun at the same time. If you haven’t joined a club or unit at this point, don’t let that stop you. Just come down to the Circus and bring your Fez, there will be plenty of ways that you can help out. Just check in at the desk where you see everyone checking in, and make sure you get a time card so that the time you spend helping at the Circus gets properly recorded.
For the new Nobles that came in during the Spring or Fall Ceremonials this year, you will get out of the Shrine what you put into it. Read the monthly newspaper that is mailed to you each month. Subscribe to the Morning Buzz as well so that you can keep up on the sometimes daily changes. Come to as many of the monthly meetings as time permits. This gives you anoth-er opportunity to meet other Nobles before the general meeting. Anytime that you see a general call out put before an event this indicates that more help is needed, and is another good way to help out and meet others.
Even with your just coming into the Shrine, you can still purchase at least one set of Mom and Dad Circus pins to help out with making this year’s Circus as successful as possible. I am writing this column the day after the Fall Ceremonial. From just having gone through the Cer-emonial last fall myself, I can appreciate the amount of information that you had thrown at you on Friday and Saturday. As you have a few minutes here and there, keep going over that infor-mation again and again. I still do that periodically and pick up little nuggets of information that I didn’t remember seeing before, or because of something that I have done recently as a Shiner, now has a different meaning.
If you have any questions, give me a call or see me at the General Meeting each month.

With the parades behind us, and the Bugs stored from old man winter, we are excited to now have a full compliment of drivers for the 10 buggies. Look out Nobles of Ararat, you are going to see a mobile unit at full strength for 2012 parades. At our
last meeting at Noble Jim McCann and his Lady Trish’s home we accepted Noble Bill Smith and his Lady Joy into the Buggie Family. Welcome Bill and Joy.
This parade season was a good one for the buggies, no serious problems or accidents. All had good times before and after the parades.
New parade shirts and dress uniforms were purchased this year thanks to several mem-bers of the unit.
Dave Rushton’s Lady Sue is recovering nicely from her accident. All are looking forward to many more good times as we go through the winter months.

Ararat Ballroom Dance ClubBY GEOrGE UNDErWOOD, PrESIDENT
If you missed the Ballroom Dance Club’s Dance Saturday, October 15th, 2011, you missed a GREAT TIME! The Ed Smith Band played a variety of music, requests and line dances. We had approximately 220 guests, with three dance Studios performing: Camelot Ballroom,
Overland Park, KS; Fit for Life Studio, Kansas City, MO; and Ballroom Unlimited Studio, Mission, KS. The dance routines the Studios performed was our “Dancing with the Stars” and the dresses and gowns were outstanding. They left us all spellbound at the end of the evening. Ask anyone that was there...just breathtaking.
We want to thank Steve Dowdy and his lady for taking pictures of our guests. A couple of them are included with this article, and you can view the rest of them on the Buzz, or his web site. Thanks Steve, for your time!
Please plan to attend our next dance Saturday, December 10th, our Christmas Show! We will have four more Dance Studios performing, and we know you’ll enjoy it.
See you on the Dance Floor!

September and October have been busy for the Transporters. We came out in support of the Fall Swap Meet. Unfortu-
nately the weather wasn’t as cooperative. That is one of the risks that you take when having an outdoor event. We can now look forward getting ready to help with the Spring Swap Meet. For the new Nobles that just came in during the Fall Ceremonial, this is an excel-lent way to meet your fellow Nobles and to help out with one of our larger fundraising activities.
At the end of September, it was time for the Transporters’ fundraiser for the year. Since this was my first time to help with this fundraiser and also to be at the American Roy-al Barbeque Competition, I wasn’tsure what to expect. With the number of folks that came to the competition, the four carts we had there were kept very busy shuttling folks from the vendor and attendee parking lots, which were several blocks from where the entrance gates were at the American Royal. With the num-ber of folks we were taking back and forth, a
couple of us had to make a quick run across the street from the Royal to the nearest gas station we could get to safely. Starting out with 1/2 a tank of gas (about 3 gallons) should have been sufficient to handle us for the time we were to help out. We were making con-tinual runs to the point that our engines were not shutting down. Even though there were larger shuttle vans also helping move people around the competition, as the number of folks trying to come to the Royal increased, it became harder for them to move around. With the number of people that I saw while down-town, we could have used double the number of carts we had there. For you new Nobles that haven’t joined a club yet or are thinking about joining another club, there are two carts currently available to get you in the group, and being in the parades and events we are in throughout the year.
The next morning had us going in differ-ent directions. Most of the Transporters went to a parade that we had been invited to. I went to the CPR/AED training put on by the good
folks in the Provost. If a situation occurs, there is no such thing as having enough people trained and certified. This applies not only to when we have either a parade or fundraising event at Ararat, but potentially in your person-al life as well. Paramedics or an ambulance won’t be able to be somewhere immediately. Doing something to help someone is better than sitting back and doing nothing. The next time that this training is offered, I can’t think of a better way to spend part of a Saturday learning how to be prepared to be able to han-dle the situation you may be presented with.
Before we knew it, the time for the Fall Ceremonial has come. This one was special for me. It was close to a year ago that I became a Shriner and for the second time, I was the one at the other end of the process getting ready to present Transporters to the newest incom-ing class of Nobles. I know that you were hit with a lot of information in a very short period of time. One thing I can suggest is to use the Ararat website to learn more about the clubs or unit that you are thinking about joining. You will get out of Ararat and being a Shriner what you put into it. If I can answer any questions for you, please get in touch with me or see me at the monthly general meeting.

U.S. Army per-sonnel were there in uniform. Sheriff Mike Sharp had a nice display of vari-ous Sheriff’s Department vehicles. The guest speaker was Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Colonel (Ret.) Don “Doc” Ballard. Col. Ballard’s message was inspiring. He stated that the youth are our future and it is our responsibility to instill them with the values and principles of Patriotism. He also said that Veterans need to Unite and become One Voice for America. Ararat Temple has many Veterans who have honorably served the Unites States of America. Veterans have defended America’s Democ-racy and Freedom for over 200 years. THANK YOU to all the Veterans for their selfless con-tributions to America’s Freedom! NOBODY TOLD ME!By, Steve Dowdy
I went to the Potentate’s Ball last month, but it was too late for me to write about it.It wasn’t too late to get the pictures in thepaper, but I couldn’t write fast enough.
We’ve always liked the Potentate’s Ball, probably because Jerri likes to get dressedup, and when she’s happy, it’s easy for meto get happy. Besides that, wearing a tuxe-do makes me feel like James Bond! Ofcourse, it’s not the getting beat up twice inevery movie that I like to imagine, butthere’s enough other cool stuff to keep myinner Walter Mitty quite happy.
This time, the ball was a masqueradeparty. We only wore masks on our faces, unless you count the James Bond outfit. Ithought that would be the silliest thing Iever did, but I was wrong. I was reallywrong! I was great! Shriner’s wives arebeautiful anyway, but the air of mystery
added something special. Then, the Nobleslooked like some kind of royalty in theirmasks. I didn’ t have much trouble identi-fying anybody, but it was fun to pretend.
The decorations were certainly impressive, and the food was outstanding. I’m sure thatsomebody got something he didn’t like, butthat’s the way the world works. It’s reallydifficult to prepare good food for that manypeople, and it’s even more difficult trying toserve that many people, keeping the foodwarm and not dropping a plate in anyone’s lap.
Then came the band. Asmall band fromJoplin, of all places. As far as I know,Joplin has never been the music capital ofthe free world, but with this band, they’vegot a pretty good chance. The band wascalled “Diversity,” and it was appropriate. They played stuff that the old guys like meenjoyed, and they played stuff that the several
young people in the attendance really liked. There were several “kids” at the ball,
some of them were family of the Divan, some were young Nobles and Ladies, andsome were sons and daughters of Nobles.Whoever they were, they danced andlaughed and behaved politely while havinga lot of fun. Some of them even dancedwith Nobles old enough to be their fathers, and at least one young lady talked one ofour dance divas into giving her dance les-sons. Lady Eva Horrell seemed to be hav-ing as much fun as her student. It was greatseeing such a diverse group dancing to aband called Diversity. Can’t you just pic-ture them telling their friends that those oldpeople really know how to have fun!
It taught me that we can attract youngmen to the Nobility, and we can enjoy beingaround each other. That means a lot to our
fraternity. Too many young men look at usand think that they have nothing in com-mon with us. My own son, a Noble him -self, doesn’t like to come to our parties anddances because he doesn’t like “our music.”We need to find common ground, and itwas there at the Potentate’s Ball.
I think a lot of the credit must go to theFirst Lady, because I just don’t seeIllustrious Sir Kevin putting all of thattogether by himself. But, with LadyDianna’s help, and guidance, he threw ahelluva party! They’re quite a pair!
If we, the Nobility of Ararat Shrine, cancontinue in that tradition, we are going tohave a fantastic year. We CAN have fun whilehelping our kids, and it’s time we did so.

FOOD & WINEBy, Steve Dowdy
Last month we talked about the labelsthat they stick on a bottle of wine. So nowyou should have a little knowledge of howto read a wine label. But that doesn’ t helpmuch unless you know something about thetaste of the wine. Some wines simply tastebetter with some foods.
Conventional wisdom has been to drinkred wines with red meat, and white wineswith “white” meat. But what to you drinkwith ham? Ham looks pink to me, but noexpert ever says you should drink pink winewith anything. That could be because“pink” is called “blush,” but I really suspectthat it’s mostly snobbery.
The most important aspect of pairingfood and wine is not color, but “body.”Delicate or lightly flavored foods work bestwith light bodied wines. Stronger, heavierfoods should be paired with medium to fullbodied wines. There are several, perhapsmany, schemes to help evaluate which winegoes with which food, but the most reliableis simply “personal taste.” But personaltaste must be developed, so let’s look for astarting point.
The old rule of red with red and whitewith white works to some degree, butthere’s a lot of room for experimentation. For one point of confusion, all red winesdon’t taste the same, and neither do allwhite wines. Sometimes this approachworks, but there might be a better way.
Another approach to pairing is to try toreflect the character of the food with thecharacter of the wine. Some fish dishes, such as broiled salmon, have a very robustflavor, and pair very well with a robustwine such as a Pinot Noir. And veal fits in
with a Sauvignon Blanc like beer with hotdogs. Maybe I should tell you that PinotNoir is a deep red and Blanc means“white.”
Don’t forget that sauces have a great dealto do with pairing because they can com -pletely change the taste and texture of thefood. Alightly flavored sauce can comple-ment a delicate wine, but a more robustsauce needs a heavier wine with more body.
Of course, this is Kansas City, and we eata lot of barbeque. Folks, I don’t know whatwine to suggest with barbecued ribs or beefbrisket. Some full-bodied, red wine with alot of character would probably be best, maybe a Pinot Noir or even a Shiraz? I’vehad some wonderful Shiraz, and I’ve hadsome that were too spicy. How aboutChampagne? White Zinfandel probablywon’t work for me, but you might like it.Go ahead and try something and don’tblame me. Tell me if it works.
The important thing about all of this is totry something, and if you don’t like it, don’tdo it again. You will probably find that agood red wine is best with steak, and a goodwhite wine is best with chicken. Chiantigoes well with most Italian dishes, andLiebfraumilch might be good with Germanfood. I don’t know any good Mexican winethat complements tamales or tacos.
The “rules” of wine drinking don’t evenqualify as suggestions these days. But theyprobably deserve more than lip service.Respect the judgment of those who havemade mistakes before you, and think abouttheir choices before you make your ownmistake. Of course, you can always spit itout and order something else.

Our October meeting was held at the Temple on Monday, October 3rd, with 3 officers and 14 members pres-
ent. Our Director, Noble Paul Brewer could not be with us due to being hospitalized at Research Hospital over the weekend. We all wish him a quick recovery.
Our last parade for the year was held in Edgerton, Missouri on Saturday, Septem-ber 10th, with seven cars parading. Following the parade we were all invited to the home of Noble John and Lois Saul, members of the Antique Auto Club, for a delicious cook-out. Forty-two Shriners and ladies enjoyed the food and fellowship. We thank them both for their generous hospitality.
Our October Social Dinner was held at Logan’s Road House on Monday, October 10th, with 15 members and ladies attending.
Friday night, October 7th, we had 6 cars on display at the Pub Crawl and on Saturday, October 8th, several of our members were in the cast who presented the Arch Program during the Ceremonial.
On Thursday, October 13th, six of our members including Past Director and Past Potentate Noble Don Price-1966 Buick Sky-lark Conv; our Past President Noble Mick Owens-1966 Mercury Maurader Conv; No-bles Benny Hoke-1934 Plymouth Coupe; Marty Hopkins–1975 Oldsmobile Conv; and Past Directors Nobles Ben Kropf 1935 Huppmobile Sedan and Dick Lewis-1965 Cadillac Conv, displayed our antique vehi-cles at the Municipal Auditorium. This was to help celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the opening of this historic building. Ararat Shrine is one of the oldest tenants who have used this building for their annual Shrine Circuses for the past 75 years, and for many years held their Shrine Ceremonials there twice each year. We appreciate being part of this celebration. The picture below shows our vehicles.
By the printing of this issue we trust that all members have purchased their Shrine Circus tickets as the Circus will be but a few days away.
