Dear Arapahoe Parents, February 2017
Believe it or not, we are already four weeks into our new academic semester. One of the great things
about our school calendar and grade marking periods is the opportunity for a fresh start at the beginning
of each semester. Faculty often make small adjustments to improve their planning and classroom
instruction, and students make fresh commitments to stay on top of reading and other important
homework assignments. Highly motivated students see this as an opportunity to set goals for even more
impressive academic achievement. It is particularly important for seniors to stay strong and finish strong. I
have heard, on more than one occasion, of a senior having a college offer rescinded based on
“senioritis” behaviors and slacking off in the last semester of high school. As always, please feel free to
contact your student’s teachers at the earliest sign of concern in a class. We often think that, as high
school students, they do not need parental involvement. Sometimes that gentle reminder that you are
checking the parent portal in Infinite Campus on a regular basis helps hold them accountable.
Arapahoe will also continue the practice of sending home confidential emails to let you know when
students are failing classes.
Arapahoe continues to prepare our students to be career and college ready. We have recently
received our 2016 Graduation Rate from the Colorado Department of Education, and Arapahoe’s Class
of 2016 had an impressive 93.4% on-time graduation rate! I am proud of our strong teaching faculty,
outstanding and dedicated students, and our supportive and encouraging parents for making it possible
for our students to perform so well on these important assessments. Way to go, Warriors!!
Last week we held our annual Winter Pep Assembly. In addition to the outstanding performances by our
Arapahoe Cheers, Toms and Winter Guard, there was excellent school spirit and genuine enthusiasm as
many Warriors were recognized for their outstanding achievements in athletics and activities.
Additionally, we revealed the 2016-2017 Arapahoe Teacher of the Year. Thank you to students, staff, and
parents for over 400 nominations for 67 different Arapahoe teachers. Rising above the pack was math
teacher, Mr. Sean Conway! Read more about Mr. Conway later on in this edition of the Drum Beat. The
Winter Dance was a huge success this year as well! Thank you to our Cheers and Toms for hosting this fun
western-themed dance. We are looking forward to growing this dance next year by bringing back the
Sadie-Hawkins (girls ask guys) tradition, and opening the dance back up to outside guests. Thank you for
encouraging your Warriors to attend these events. We love providing a safe alternative to other potential
inappropriate activities that can occur on the weekends.
As the days grow a little longer, it is the time of year when we are looking forward to the many exciting
events of the spring. We are grateful for the many parent volunteers that step up to create an amazing
After Prom for our students each spring. If you are interested in helping, please contact a member of our
wonderful PTO, whose contact information can be found in this newsletter. Spring also brings important
standardized tests for our students. All freshmen will take the CMAS on April 11-13. All sophomores will
take the PSAT 10 on April 12. All juniors will take the Colorado State SAT exam on April 11, and the
Colorado State Science CMAS on April 13. One night of Arapahoe Parent-Teacher Conferences will be
held on Thursday, March 9 from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Another exciting opportunity for our Warriors this spring is a special trip to visit our friends on the Wind River
Indian Reservation in Riverton, Wyoming. Thanks to the Senior Class of 2017, we will be able to take
approximately 50 Warriors (students and staff) to the reservation in April. The trip has traditionally been a
wonderful way for us to learn about their culture and traditions, as well as to nurture our special
relationship with the people for whom our school was named. The application for students can be found
in this Drum Beat.
I am pleased to share with you two upcoming opportunities to hear from LPS Superintendent, Brian Ewert.
At our February PTO and School Accountability meetings, Superintendent Ewert will share important
information about the district's vision for improving student learning through Professional Learning
Communities. He will share emerging ideas on how to adjust instructional time in order to provide
teachers with more professional collaboration time. He will also share information regarding the possible
later start time for LPS high schools. Each of these meetings is designed for parents to ask questions and
give input.
The meetings at Arapahoe High School are scheduled as follows: PTO Meeting
· Tuesday, February 14th 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
· AHS Forum - Please enter and check in at the East Bubble Entrance
· You must present a government-issued photo ID School Accountability Meeting
· Thursday, February 16th 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
· AHS Forum - Enter and check in at the East Bubble Entrance

Please visit the Littleton Public Schools website to learn more. The website will be updated frequently, so
please check back for additional details. Parents and community members are welcome to attend the
meetings at ANY school. A complete list is available through the link above. We look forward to seeing
you at one of these upcoming meetings.
Thank you for your continued support of Arapahoe High School. We love working with your students and
appreciate you very much!

Wind River Reservation Trip Application
April 27—28, 2017
Did the visit of the Arapaho people to our school last year provoke curiosity of a lifestyle and culture that
you’d like to learn more about? If so, mark your calendar for this year’s Wind River Trip. Arapahoe High
School has been affiliated with the Arapaho Tribe since 1992. Every two years, representatives from
the Arapaho Tribal Nation come to our school to continue an ongoing cultural exchange and further
our friendship. In 2015 a group of Arapahoe High School students and staff visited the Wind River
Reservation in Riverton, Wyoming to continue building the relationship. As part of our class gift, the
Class of 2017 has decided to continue the tradition of cultural exchange by sponsoring a group of
students and staff to return, once again, to Riverton.
If you are selected to be a part of this trip, you will be expected to:
*keep a journal of your experience.
*share your experience with other students and staff upon your return.
*contribute $50 toward travel expenses and the hotel stay.
*cover the cost of your meals (one dinner and breakfast will be provided).
*bring two gifts for elementary—aged children at a local elementary school.
*attend the meeting on April 20 at 2:30 p.m. in the Forum.
*get parent permission forms signed and submitted.
We will depart from AHS early in the morning on Thursday, April 27 and will return the evening of April 28.

2. Why you want to go on the trip?
3. How will you share your experiences from the trip upon your return? Be specific.
4. Did you attend the 2015 trip? (This does not exclude you from this trip.) If yes, please explain what you
gained from your first trip and why you would like to return.

Senior Information
Awards Convocation! Parents–Please help us honor your student at the Awards Convocation on May 22. Typically, the
Counseling Center is not officially notified of any scholarships or awards your student may receive from
organizations or post high school institutions. PLEASE notify the Counseling/Post Grad Center of all
scholarships your son or daughter receives, including merit based awards, by giving Kristin Hall a copy of
the award correspondence.
Graduation Requirements Seniors-Check graduation requirements for final semester. You are responsible for making sure that you
have met all of your graduation requirements by May in order to participate in the graduation
ceremony. Make an appointment with your counselor if you have any questions. Remember that all college acceptances are contingent upon successful completion of high school credits.
Junior Information
The Colorado State SAT test required for all Juniors is Tuesday, April 11, 2017. More details will follow.
Juniors may take their college entrance tests beginning with the February 2016 test dates. However, later
spring testing dates are preferable because more of the tested material will have been covered in
classes. Please go to www.collegeboard.org or www.act.org to see additional dates for upcoming ACT/
SAT tests. Call your student’s counselor if you or your student have any questions.
Counselors will meet with juniors during their Western Civilization class in April to review graduation
requirements and scheduling for their senior year. The meetings will take place in the Forum. Juniors who
do not have a Western Civilization class should plan to attend the presentation in the Forum during one
of their off hours.
CTE (Career and Technical Education) Sophomores and juniors who are interested in taking a course through the Area Career and Technical
School (ACTS) next year will need to submit an online application in the coming weeks. New courses
have been added and students may choose from various career fields. Many of these classes earn
college credit through Arapahoe Community College. More information on the programs, including
online applications, can be found at www.lps2.it/ACTS. The priority deadline to submit applications is
February 28th, as some courses fill up quickly. Students need to meet with their counselor prior to signing
up.
College Classes Current AHS sophomores and juniors may wish to consider taking college courses in the fall of next year.
Through the Concurrent Enrollment program, tuition for these classes may be reimbursable through the
school district. A lunchtime meeting will be held for interested students on February 1st in the forum.
Students should see their counselor for further information.
Sophomore Information Sophomore students are scheduled for one-on-one appointments in the Post Grad Center during spring
semester. During their appointments, they will complete a career interest assessment and receive career
information using Naviance, the web-based college and career readiness planning tool we use at
Arapahoe.

Post Grad Center News
College Night: This year’s College Night is on Monday, February 6, 2017 from 6-8 pm. This evening is
for juniors, sophomores, and even freshmen students and all parents/guardians. Jill Athenour, an
Independent Consultant with Head to College, returns as the keynote speaker. She will build on last
year’s message of breaking down the college application process into manageable steps and will
focus on how to find the right college for you. After the keynote, attendees will go to two breakout
sessions. Click here for details on the breakouts and to RSVP.
Junior Post Grad visits: All junior students are scheduled for a post grad appointment during an off
hour this semester. In addition to learning how to use Naviance Family Connection and the
Common Application for the college application process, students will be taught how to research
application requirements, steps to request teacher/counselor recommendations, transcripts, and
more. Appointment slips will be delivered one week in advance to students during class time. The
student and primary contact listed in Infinite Campus will receive an email reminder a few days
ahead of time. Finally, a call is made home the day prior. We take these steps in an effort to ensure
that students keep this appointment as scheduled; there are limited spots for rescheduling.
Seniors: As students receive admissions decisions, please update the decision status (accepted,
waitlisted, denied) in Naviance on the COLLEGES tab, colleges I’m applying to page. On this same
page, students must mark which college they will be attending in the fall. Arapahoe High School
must have this information to send final transcripts, which are required by colleges before students
can register for classes. Students, be sure to check email regularly for information from your school
on next steps. Finally, please bring a copy of all scholarship award letters, even those not being
accepted, to Mrs. Hall in the Post Grad Center. Scholarships are documented by name for each
student, with recognition given for each accepted scholarship. In addition, a Class of 2017 total of
all scholarship dollars awarded will be announced at the Awards Convocation Night on Monday,
May 22, 2017 at 6:00 pm.

Important Attendance Reminders
When calling your student in, please leave the following information (speaking slowly):
Your student’s name—last name, then first name—please clearly spell the last name
Your student’s grade
The date of the absence
The class period(s) that your student will miss
The reason for the absence
If you have already called in your student’s absence to the message line, there is no need to call
it in again to the receptionist. All calls are received and processed to Infinite Campus as soon as
possible. If you have called in an absence for your student and still receive a “robo” call in the
evening, please consider your student may have missed a different period than what you have
called in, for, perhaps it is for a sibling
PLEASE NOTE:
Due to the high volume of phone calls, please only call one time and leave one message per absence.
All excused absences must be called in to the Attendance Office by a parent or guardian within
24 hours. We do not accept written notes or emails.
Students must pick up a pass from the Attendance Office in order to leave school when missing
classes for an appointment during the school day. A parent must call the Attendance Office early
that morning or the day before to arrange for the pass. The student is responsible for picking up
the pass before the scheduled departure time. Passes will not be delivered, and teachers do not
allow students to leave class without a pass. Please have your student sign in at the Attendance
Office upon returning from an appointment.
Messages will not be delivered to students except in emergency situations.
To check student attendance, access the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
Thank you for your help in making the Attendance process as efficient as possible.

We would also like to thank all the volunteers that have generously given their time to Arapahoe this
year. Arapahoe has always had a very strong parent volunteer community and once again you
continue to keep Arapahoe strong through your support of our students, staff and PTO. As we start
the Spring semester, we have begun to think about next year’s PTO and if you are interested in
helping in any capacity, please send us an email. We can discuss your interests and available
openings. Our meetings are the second Tuesday of every month from 7:30-9:00am in the AHS Main
Office Conference Room. Everyone is welcome to attend and learn more about joining Arapahoe
PTO.

Arapahoe After Prom
After Prom plans are underway! We have a very dedicated group that has begun planning for
After Prom in early May for your student. This is a 30 year tradition at Arapahoe, and is always a
spectacular event, but we can’t do it without you! Are you creative? Artistic? Are you a good
planner? We always need support for this event. It is a night to celebrate and entertain about 1,200
of our students in a safe environment after the dance. Work nights have been scheduled for
artwork for the halls, and planning is happening for all other areas: ticketing, prizes, food, casino,
clean up etc. If any of these areas interest you, please let us know! It takes hundreds of volunteers
to put this event together and we need you. It is so much fun to participate. It is a great way to
meet other parents, and a way to help with an event that your student will enjoy.
Attention parents of seniors: start gathering photos for a senior collage, an After Prom tradition. Look
for collage specifications in the March edition of the Drum Beat.

I would like to educate everyone on an issue that was brought to our attention in reference to fake ID’s. It
appears that some students may have fake ID’s or know someone who does. The infraction you could be
charged with if you are in possession of a fake ID is the following:
18-5-903.5 Criminal possession of an identification document: A person commits criminal possession of an
identification document if the person knowingly has in his or her possession or under his or her control
another person’s actual driver’s license, actual government issued identification card, actual social security
card, or actual passport, knowing that he or she does so without permission or lawful authority. It is a Class 1
Misdemeanor if you are in possession of one or more identification documents issued to the same person. It
is a Class 6 felony if you are in possession of two or more identification documents, of which at least two are
issued to different people.
If you use the identification document, then you commit:
18-5-902 Identity Theft: A person commits identity theft if he or she knowingly uses the personal identifying
information, financial identifying information, or financial device of another without permission or lawful
authority with the intent to obtain cash, credit, property, services, or any other thing of value, or to make a
financial payment. Identity theft is a Class 4 felony.
Students are obtaining fake ID’s to get into bars, clubs, and liquor stores. Parents, please keep your child
informed about the importance of not having a fake ID and the consequences they may face if they do.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call.
