It’s Time to Choose Your Options for 2019 The choice of subjects and career paths is an important process for you. Decisions should be carefully and thoughtfully made. At this time, you should talk with people who know you well and can help you identify your areas of strength and interest. Advice should be sought from your parents, teachers, and those who know about career requirements (Mr Smith here at Aquinas College). It is important that you consider the following questions when selecting your subjects:

- What are my favourite subjects and why? - What subjects am I really good at? - What do I want to do when I leave school and what subjects might be needed in this area?

It is important that you select subjects that match your aspirations as well as subjects that interest you and that you can get excited about. Do NOT choose subjects just because your friends are choosing them. Remember that these are YOUR subject choices and they will help to direct YOUR future. Choose wisely and well. CORRESPONDENCE SCHOOL SUBJECTS WILL NOT BE OFFERED AS OPTIONS IN 2019 OTHER THAN IN EXTREMELY EXCEPTIONAL CIRCUMSTANCES. ANY STUDENT WISHING TO STUDY A SUBJECT BY CORRESPONDENCE MUST MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM TO DISCUSS AND JUSTIFY THEIR REQUEST. The requirements for University Entrance and NCEA certificates for Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 are given in the preface to each year’s option information. It is important that students take note of this information and select a course that will ensure that they can meet these requirements. This year all option selections will be made using the online school web portal (Parent Portal). Details about accessing the portal have been emailed to all families. Please contact Mr Fraser Graham (details given below) if you are unable to access the portal and the information will be resent to you. Unfortunately, due to various constraints upon the timetable (staffing, compulsory subjects and class sizes), some subject combinations may not be possible. Students who have chosen a combination of subjects that doesn’t fit the proposed subject structure will be contacted as soon as possible to attempt to find a combination that does fit. Every effort will be made to give students their preferred choices.

Students are expected to have discussed their option selections and the required prerequisites with staff at the school. The option forms include a column to acknowledge that this has occurred. Please feel free to contact the Director of Curriculum at any stage if you wish to discuss the option choices process. His contact details are:

Director of Curriculum: Fraser Graham Telephone: 543 9047

e-mail: [email protected]

The teacher in charge of careers is Mike Smith. You may contact him to discuss any issues in relation to careers and option choices. His contact details are:

T.I.C. Careers: Mike Smith Telephone: 543 2400 ext 236

e-mail: [email protected]

The deadline for Option Choices to be completed is Friday 24th August (week 5). Students completing their choices on or before this date will be given priority of entry

to any oversubscribed courses that they may have selected.

The following pages provide an outline for planning your future options pathway. This will require you to do a bit of research to find the subjects that you will need to take in your final year of school. Then you can work backwards to determine your subject selection for next year. A summary of the Vocational Pathways information from the Ministry of Education is also provided for you to consider.

Student Information for NCEA Level 1 (correct as at July 2018)

This year, your work will be assessed mainly through Achievement Standards with Unit Standards in a few courses. It is important that you read this information carefully so that you understand how to get the best results from this assessment system.

Structure of NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement): For each subject, there are a number of Achievement Standards. Each Standard is worth a particular number of credits To achieve Level 1 in the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, you must gain 80 credits from the standards studied. In those 80 credits, there are also minimum literacy and numeracy requirements.

NZQA define literacy and numeracy as follows: Literacy is the written and oral language people use in their everyday life and work. It includes reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Skills in this area are essential for good communication, active participation, critical thinking and problem solving. Numeracy is the bridge between mathematics and daily life. It includes the knowledge and skills needed to apply mathematics to everyday family and financial matters, work and community tasks. • For literacy, you must have a minimum of 10 credits gained from specified Achievement Standards or through the literacy Unit

Standards • For numeracy, you must have a minimum of 10 credits from any combination of the specified numeracy Achievement Standards

or the numeracy Unit Standards.

Structure of Achievement Standards: For each Achievement Standard that you pass, you will be awarded one of the following grades:

Achieved Achieved with Merit Achieved with Excellence If you do not pass your Achievement Standard, you will be awarded: Not Achieved

The Achievement Standards are divided into: External Achievement Standards which are typically assessed at the end of the year, by examination in November. Internal Achievement Standards which are assessed throughout the school year.

NCEA Certificate Endorsements Candidates can receive NCEA Level One with Merit if they achieve 50 or more credits with Merit or Excellence grades. Candidates can receive NCEA Level One with Excellence if they achieve a total of 50 credits or greater with an Excellence grade.

NCEA Subject Endorsements Students will gain an endorsement for a course where they achieve:

14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence at the lower level that supports the endorsement at least 3 credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards the credits must be gained in a single school year.

Page 7

Student Information for NCEA Level 2 (correct as at July 2018)

All Year 12 students are required to study Religious Education and an English option. Students then get to choose FOUR more optional subjects.

In Year 12, the students are required to gain 80 credits to achieve Level Two NCEA. Up to 20 of those credits may be counted from any of the credits that they achieved at Level One. Effectively, this means that the students need to gain at least 60 credits at Level Two.

NCEA Certificate Endorsements Candidates can receive NCEA Level Two with Merit if they achieve 50 or more credits with Merit or Excellence grades. Candidates can receive NCEA Level Two with Excellence if they achieve a total of 50 credits or greater with an Excellence grade.

NCEA Subject Endorsements Students will gain an endorsement for a course where they achieve:

Student Information for NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance (correct as at July 2018)

All Year 13 students are required to study Religious Education. Students then get to choose FIVE more optional subjects.

In Year 13, students are required to gain 80 credits to achieve Level Three NCEA. 20 of those credits may be counted from any of the credits that they achieved at Level Two. Effectively, this means that students need to gain at least 60 credits at Level Three.

University Entrance UE requirements dictate that students must gain:

NCEA Level Three UE Numeracy – 10 credits at Level 1 and above from specific achievement standards, or three specific numeracy unit

standards UE Literacy – 10 credits (five in reading and five in writing) at Level 2 and above from specific standards Achieve 14 credits at Level Three in each of three subjects from the list of approved subjects. The list of approved subjects

will consist of subjects derived from the New Zealand Curriculum with achievement standards at Level Three. The approved subjects may be viewed online at: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/assets/_generated_pdfs/approved-subjects-from-2014-852.pdf

Students must be aware that gaining University Entrance does not automatically provide access to tertiary institutions or courses. Many Universities are now introducing additional entry level requirements of students. All students should be aware of the requirements they must meet for any courses that they wish to study.
