MAKING 2019 THE BEST YEAR YET

Happy 2019! When I started volunteering on the Spring Conference Committee in 2000, I wasn’t thinking about my future in this organization. I had just started in the engineering industry as a Marketing Coordinator for Carter & Burgess, and a friend of mine told me I should volunteer. I know a lot of our awesome members who volunteer their time have a similar story. After eight years on the Spring Conference Committee, I worked my way through the positions on the Southern Branch, and then joined the Executive Committee. Twenty years later, here we are.

I’m excited to be your Nevada Chapter President, and we have an

President’s Message amazing team of leaders ready to

make this another great year for APWA Nevada. Our efforts this year will be focused on continuing to add value to your membership, through education and networking opportunities, and advocating for public works by educating and informing others about the key role public works plays in our daily life.

We are here to serve you, our members. If you have an idea or a suggestion, please let me know.

Cheers! Debi Bohnet [email protected]

ATTENTION MEMBERS! NORTHERN BRANCH vs. SOUTHERN BRANCH 2019 M E M B E R S H I P D R I V E

“The more the merrier” so we want to put “the ball in your court” to tell your colleagues and friends “to jump on the bandwagon” because “the grass really is greener” at APWA! Whichever branch increases the most in membership, on a percentage basis, from February 1st to September 20th in 2019 will win the bragging rights of a cannon to be displayed in the respective region’s curio. So don’t leave this challenge “on the back burner!” “Get to work!” It’s “a piece of cake,” and just remember that “all is fair in love and war” and membership drives. May the best branch win! It’s actually going to be a “win-win situation” for everyone involved!

NORTHERN BRANCH SUPPORTS EDDY HOUSE Eddy House works with homeless and at-risk youth to develop life and job skills necessary for sustainable independence.

“The way we treat our most vulnerable is a reflection on who we are as a community. These are the community’s kids. We can’t ignore it. These kids are in a constant state of crisis and it’s a public health issue.” – Lynette Eddy

The Northern Branch hosted the Annual Charity Luncheon with ASCE at Atlantis. Michele Gehr with Eddy House spoke about the efforts and mission of Eddy House in Nevada. Sponsors this year included HDR, CME, Shaw Engineering, NCE, Dyer Engineering Consultants, and Angst Real Estate Team. The luncheon, sponsorships, raffle and donations from APWA and ASCE raised $5,000 donated to the Eddy House. Thank you to all who participated and thank you to Lonnie Johnson, Dyer Engineering, Northern Branch Past Chair, who headed this effort.

APWA Nevada Chapter Raises Over $17,000 For Local Charities

THANK YOU FOR 26 YEARS KEVIN HILL!

Thank you to the Southern Branch for your donations to support The Just One Project this year. Because of your commitment, we were able to brighten the holidays for over 50 children by fulfilling their wish lists for toys, shoes, and warm winter jackets! Additionally, because of your generous donations, the Stuff the Stocking committee also adopted four African Refugee families in the Las Vegas Valley. Our members worked with volunteers from the LDS church to gather wish lists and deliver gifts by none other than Santa himself! Please visit nevada.apwa.net to see more photos from our gift deliveries this holiday season! – Keli Callahan, Carollo Engineers, Stuff the Stocking Committee Chair

Kevin served on our APWA Nevada Board for 26 YEARS! The most amazing part is he attended 104 board meetings, never missing one! Kevin spent 15-16 of those years as our chapter delegate to APWA National.

At the early conferences and BBQs, Kevin was also the branch bartender! Kevin has numerous stories to tell, but we were amazed to hear he was at APWA Congress (PWX) in Philadelphia during 9/11 and had to drive home. He also attended a spring board meeting in Reno and was stranded by a snowstorm! NDOT loaned them a car to drive home after a stay at the Rodeway Inn. When you see Kevin, at a luncheon or conference, be sure to say “Hi!” and thank him for his leadership, service and involvement in APWA!

Fall Conference was definitely the best route ‘round the race track if you found the groove filled with knowledgeable speakers preventing us from cuttin’ a tire or blowin’ up, took a few pit stops at the vendor exhibition for some great contacts and prizes, and participated in the happy hours and gas ‘n’ go’s for networking galore. A big wave of the checkered flag to the winning committee, led by Deanna Gray, who put this excellent event together!

If you missed this conference, consider drafting yourself in for the next conference! It’ll improve your camber and time and reduce the dirty air! -Lauren Warren, CTS, Newsletter Editor
