The Technology

Since 1981, the APV HYBRID HEATEXCHANGER has been firmly esta-blished in industry. The broad rangeof possible construction forms for thehybrid system allows to find the bestpossible solutions for given thermal,physical and geometrical conditions.The fully welded APV HYBRID PLATEHEAT EXCHANGER ensures thatdifferent media are safely keptseparate - even when higher pressuresand temperatures are applied. Thismeans that there is a wider range of

possible applications than where thegasketed plate heat exchangers can beapplied.The APV HYBRID HEAT EXCHANGERalso proves superior in any respectwhen compared to shell & tube heatexchangers with the usual construc-tion design and identical conditionsfor process engineering.Its compact design allows a heatingsurface density of 250 m2/m3. Thespecial construction of the flowpattern ensures that the heat transfer

for gases as well as for liquids isextremely enhanced. A furtheradvantage in comparison with shell &tube heatexchangers is the high economic effi-ciency of the APV HYBRID HEATEXCHANGER. The use of less materialmeans considerable cost reductionpotential when high-grade alloys arerequired.

Functionality

The schematic diagrams of the flowregime show that almost the entiresurface of the metal plates areused for heat exchange, so that fulladvantage is taken from the materialused. The APV HYBRIDPLATE HEAT EXCHANGER design hasno dead spots and provides veryefficient heat transfer at low pressuredrop values, which enables very closetemperature approach.The plate side flow and the tube sideflow are arranged in cross flowconfiguration in one or multiplepasses over the plates.The plate pattern forms ellipticaltube channels on the tube flow sideand wave flow passage on the plateside.The depth of the plate pressing canoptionally be increased in orderto allow larger flow rates or reducedpressure drop or the passage oflarger particles. This providespossibilities of optimal designto process requirements and isachieved by enlarging diametersof the elliptical tube channels, whilemaintaining the plate distanceon the plate flow side. It is alsopossible to achieve a wide-gapcondition on the plate flow side bywelding the plates at expandeddistance.The APV HYBRID PLATE HEATEXCHANGER can be designedfor a pressure range from full vacuumto 60 bar.

The Construction

The dimensions of the heat exchangerblock are determined by the lengthand number of plates piled on top ofeach other.Depending on the process engineeringrequirements, plates of a lengthbetween 216 and 12,000 mm and aconstant width of 350 mm are weldedtogether to one or several gas-tightand pressure-resistant blocks. Thethickness of the sheets depends onrequirements. Generally, the sheetswhich are processed are between 0.5and 0.8 mm thick.The design of the APV HYBRID HEATEXCHANGER allows a flexiblearrangement in construction as well asin process engineering.

In addition to the wide variety ofpossibilities with the heat exchangerblock, the construction of the covercan also be altered according to re-quirements. The APV HYBRID HEATEXCHANGER can be used just as across flow or as a cross counter flowapparatus.Several passes can be made both onthe tube and the plate side. The flowcan be diverted several times bysimply installing deflector plates in thecovers. Thus, heat exchangers for awide variety of applications can beoffered.
