ACCENT 25316 Label Code 196 Price Code V JOHANN SEBASTIAN: BACH CANTATAS FOR PENTECOST ARTISTS: Le Petitie Bande, Kuijken In the beginning there was great scepticism towards the thesis that Bach’s sacred vocal works were originally written for solo voices. Now this interpretation is establishing itself more and more. With this edition of one cantata for each Sunday and the great feasts of the ecclesiastical year Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande want to strengthen this new approach and prove it right by their excellent performances. This Vol. 16 of the edition offers four cantatas, one for the three days of Pentecost and one for the Sunday after Pentecost, Trinity Sunday. "Among current cantata series Sigiswald Kuijken‘s has a distinctive place, his one-to-a-part voices and few instruments achieving striking delicacy. His vocal soloists sing with disarming simplicity and ease in arias, and blend superbly in ensemble. A rare treat, Kuijken – and Bach – at their very best.” (BBC Music Magazine, March 2010, review vol. 9) ARS SACD 38109 Label Code 449 Price Code V JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH: ORGELTRANSKIPTIONEN Franz Liszt (1811-1886) Einleitung und Fuge aus der Kantate Ich Hatte viel Bekummernis. BIS SACD 1879 Label Code 419 Price Code P ELGAR – SYMPHONY NO. 2 Sir Edward Elgar: Symphony No.2 in E flat major, Op.63 Sospiri for strings, harp and organ, Op.70 Elegy for strings, Op.58 ARTISTS: Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Sakari Oramo The collaboration between BIS and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (RSPO) began some 30 years ago, and has resulted in a number of discs conducted by such distinguished musicians as Antal Doráti, Yuri Ahronovitch and Alan Gilbert, all past chief conductors of the orchestra. As the present principal conductor, Sakari Oramo now conducts the RSPO on a BIS recording, he has chosen works by Edward Elgar, a composer whose music he has been a fervent advocate of since his tenure at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. In particular he is fascinated by Elgar’s orchestration technique: ‘Elgar's orchestrations breathe, reflect and ripple, transporting the music in majestic waves unlike anybody else’s. He applied his technique as precisely as Richard Strauss, but also allowed himself to be carried away, to feel every colour and shade.’ Sakari Oramo’s commitment to Elgar has been rewarded by a medal from the British Elgar Society, and his interpretations have met with great acclaim in the composer’s own country. The main work on the present disc is the Second Symphony – a darkly hued, powerful work lasting almost an hour. The composer apparently planned to dedicate it to King Edward VII as ‘a loyal tribute’, but the monarch’s sudden death in May 1910, led to the symphony being inscribed instead to his memory. Composed during the same years as the symphony, the two companion pieces on the disc also have a melancholy tinge: Elegy for strings, and Sospiri (‘sighs’) for strings, harp and organ.

BIS SACD 2007 Label Code 419 Price Code P MOZART – MUSIC FOR THE OBOE Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Oboe Quartet in F major, K 370; Oboe Concerto in C major, K 314 Violin Sonata in B flat major, K 378 (arranged for oboe and piano) ARTISTS: Alexei Ogrintchouk, oboe & direction, Boris Brovtsyn, violin, Maxim Rysanov, viola, Kristina Blaumane, cello, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, Leonid Ogrintchouk, piano. It was during an extended visit to Mannheim in 1777 that Mozart became friendly with the oboist Friedrich Ramm, a member of the famous Mannheim orchestra which was widely acknowledged as the finest in Europe (‘an army of generals’ as Charles Burney remarked). Earlier the same year Mozart had composed his Oboe Concerto, and impressed by Ramm’s ability, he now played the work through to him on the piano. Although Mozart had written it for another player, Ramm was to make it his own: by 14 February 1778 he had performed it no less than five times – ‘a great sensation…Ramm’s cheval de bataille’ as Mozart described it. Mozart later found occasion to compose especially for Ramm – the Oboe Quartet was written as a celebration of his virtuosity, and significantly challenged the boundaries of the possible on the contemporary oboe. As principal oboist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and an international soloist in his own right, Alexei Ogrintchouk may well be said to be the Friedrich Ramm of our day – also on BIS, his performances of J.S. Bach’s oboe concertos was judged to be ‘as astonishing as it is successful’ on the web site klassik-heute.de, with a sound described as ‘generous, rounded, warm and velvety’ in Classica. He here performs these pillars of the oboe repertoire with the support of the renowned Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in the concerto and in the company of three highly respected young string players in the quartet. To round off the programme Alexei has called in his father, the pianist Leonid Ogrintchouk, and together the two perform a transcription of the Violin Sonata in B flat major, K 378, composed during the same period as the two other works on this disc.

* BIS SACD 2022 Label Code 419 Price Code P WAGNER – WESEDONCK-LIEDER, SIGFRIED-IDYLL, OVERTURES Richard Wagner: Wesendonck-Lieder (orch. Mottl/Wagner)*; Overture to ‘Der fliegende Holländer’ (original and final versions); Siegfried-Idyll; Träume (No.5 of the Wesendonck-Lieder: version for violin and orchestra by the composer)**; Prelude to ‘Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’ ARTISTS: Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Thomas Dausgaard, Nina Stemme, soprano, Katarina Andreasson, violin. In their exploration of the symphonic repertoire of the Romantic era, Thomas Dausgaard and his Swedish Chamber Orchestra have previously recorded Bruckner, Tchaikovsky and most recently Brahms, in performances described as ‘exhilarating’ (The Observer) and ‘stirring’ (ClassicsToday.com). As they take on the music by another archetypal nineteenth-century composer, Richard Wagner, they are joined by one of today’s foremost Wagner singers. Named ‘Singer of the Year’ by the magazine Opernwelt in 2012, Nina Stemme has been the Isolde of choice at Glyndebourne, Bayreuth and Covent Garden. She here performs the five Wesendonck Songs – of which two in particular, Im Treibhaus and Träume, were referred to by their composer as ‘studies’ for Tristan and Isolde. Wagner himself prepared a version for violin and orchestra of Träume, which the conductor Felix Mottl incorporated when, supervised by the composer, he made an orchestration of the set. These songs to texts by Mathilde Wesendonck, Wagner’s muse during the 1850s, are framed by two versions of the overture to The Flying Dutchman, the rarely heard 1841 original version and the composer’s final creation from 1860, with its new ending inspired by Tristan, composed three years earlier. Concerning his revisions, Wagner wrote to Mathilde: ‘Now that I have composed Isolde’s last transfiguration, I could at last find the right close for this Fliegender-Holländer overture’. Included is also the Siegfried Idyll, composed in 1870 as one of Wagner’s few purely orchestral works. It is known by this title because it was presented as a gift to Cosima Wagner, who had recently given birth to the couple’s son Siegfried, but also because it uses themes from the opera Siegfried, which was then nearing completion. Closing the disc is the stately prelude to another opera, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, in which Wagner with a spectacular use of counterpoint – ‘applied Bach’ was his own description – aspires to express the idea of a reconciliation between artistic freedom and respect for tradition.

* Performing at Lincoln Center, NYC April 25th, Brahms Symphony, Also Nina Stemme will be performing at the Houston Opera (Tristan und Isolde) on 18, 21, 27 April and 2, 5 May.

ACCENT 24262 Label Code 086 Price Code F BERLINER QUARTETTE Johann Gottlieb Janitsch Quartet in g minor “O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden” for oboe, violin, viola & continuo Sonata da camera in C major op. 4 for transverse flute, oboe, violin & continuo Sonata da camera „Echo“ in D major op. 5 for transverse flute, oboe, viola da gamba & continuo Sonata da camera in C minor for transverse flute, oboe & continuo ARTISTS: Il Gardellino The reign of King Friedrich II of Prussia ushered in a "Golden Age" of music at the Berlin court, at which the monarch himself actively participated as flutist and composer. Johann Gottlieb Janitsch was also active there, alongside his far more renowned colleagues Quantz, Graun, C.P.E. Bach and the Benda brothers. All these composers, including Janitsch, wrote not only for the rather conservative court, however, but also created numerous works for the considerably more open-minded noble and bourgeois Berlin salons. His quartets are distinguished by their expressive style, original thematic ideas, rich harmonies, syncopated rhythms and refined techniques of ornamentation. In additional, they captivate listeners through their colourful, diversified and at times unusual scoring. The fact that Janitsch never fails to set the "right tone" of the modern, gallant style in his quartets, despite his consummate mastery of contrapuntal techniques, makes these works precious highlights of chamber music of the North German School. Il gardellino introduce several of his especially felicitous quartets on this recording. ACCENT 24281 Label Code 086 Price Code F CORELLIMANIA Arcangelo Corelli (1653 – 1713): Concerto Grosso Op.6 No 4 in D major - Concerto Grosso Op.6 No 1 in D major - Concerto Grosso Op.6 No 7 in D major Giovanni Mossi (1680 - 1742): Concerto Grosso op.3 No 3 in d minor Pietro Antonio Locatelli (1695 - 1764): Concerto Grosso op.1 No 4 in e minor Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741): Concerto for 2 violins, strings and basso continuo in F major, RV 765 Francesco Geminiani (1687 - 1762): Concerto Grosso XII (after Corelli op.5) “Follia” ARTISTS: Harmonie Universelle, Florian Deuter, Monica Waisman. Corelli's Concerti grossi attained great fame already during his lifetime and were models for numerous European composers – especially in England, enthusiasm for his works assumed the characteristics of a true "mania". In Rome, contemporary colleagues and critics were particularly struck by their unusually large ensembles. In contemporary sources which go into precise detail concerning the performing musicians, one also finds references to the expansion of the orchestra by two trumpets and one trombone. The otherwise well-known works of Corelli are rarely heard in this expansive, brilliant orchestration. Harmonie Universelle now aims to fill this gap with the present recording. Alongside Corelli's Concerti grossi, Op. 6 Nos. 1, 4 and 7 in the version for trumpets and trombone, other concerti grossi can be heard by Locatelli, Geminiani und Mossi, composed without exception under the influence of their model Corelli and supplemented by an unknown Double Concerto by Antonio Vivaldi. As already demonstrated in their outstanding Vivaldi recording (ACC 24266), the interpretations of Harmonie Universelle are particularly distinguished for their richly colourful continuo group, their spirited but never gruff fast movements as well as dreamily floating slow movements.

Georg Philipp Telemann: Trio in G major for violin, gamba and b.c., TWV 42:G10 Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Trio sonata in B flat major for two violins and b.c., Wq158 ARTISTS: London Baroque The closing disc in London Baroque’s survey of the rise and fall of the trio sonata takes us to 18th-century Germany, and includes works by no less than two Johann Gottliebs: Johann Gottlieb Goldberg – who rose to posthumous fame by being associated with J.S. Bach’s celebrated set of variations – and his namesake Johann Gottlieb Graun, violinist and composer at the court of Frederick the Great. Next to them in the list of contents are also more familiar names, such as Graun’s colleague at the Prussian court, C.P.E. Bach, and the ubiquitous G.Ph. Telemann, here represented with an unusually scored trio for violin, gamba and basso continuo. The programme straddles the divide between late Baroque and Classical music, and several of the included works point clearly at what was to come. One of these is the trio sonata by C.P.E.’s younger brother Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, of whom it is known that he became a great admirer of Mozart after encountering his music during a visit to London in the 1780’s. Looking back over this eight-disc series, which opened with three Fantasias composed before 1620 by Orlando Gibbons, it becomes clear how far London Baroque has travelled, on a journey that has taken in both staples of the repertoire and more or less unknown jewels, by composers still revered today or awaiting rediscovery.

BIS 9043 (4 CD’s for the price of 2) Label Code 001 Price Code P MOZART ARRANGED BY HUMMEL Piano Concerto No.10 in E flat major, K 365; Piano Concerto No.18 in B flat major, K 456; Piano Concerto No.20 in D minor, K 466; Piano Concerto No.22 in E flat major, K 482; Piano Concerto No.24 in C minor, K 491; Piano Concerto No.25 in C major, K 503; Piano Concerto No.26 in D major, K 537, ‘Coronation Concerto’; Symphony No.40 in G minor, K 550 ARTISTS: Furniko Shiraga, piano, Henrik Wiese, flute, Peter Clemente, violin, Tibor Benyi, cello. Today, with authenticity a crucial concern in musical performance, the idea of arranging piano concertos by Mozart for chamber forces seems almost bizarre. But in the 1830s, when the publisher Schott commissioned Johann Nepomuk Hummel to produce these versions of seven of Mozart’s most popular concertos for piano, flute, violin and cello, it was a common practice aimed at facilitating performances of orchestral works in domestic settings. And few could have brought such insights to the procedure as Hummel, one of the earliest protagonists on the stage of the virtuoso era, but also regarded by his contemporaries as the last legitimate representative of the ‘classical’ style. As a young boy Hummel had lived and studied in Mozart’s household for two years, which had given him the opportunity to follow the composition of the Concertos in C minor, K491, and C major, K503, at close quarters. His arrangements may be described as the result of a virtuoso’s approach to the works of a revered teacher, with a piano part which combines the orchestral parts, the solo line and Hummel’s own added ornamentations and decorative alterations, whilst the other instruments accompany or reinforce the piano writing. Fumiko Shiraga’s performances were originally released on single discs between 2003 and 2006, to critical acclaim, including a Gramophone ‘Editor’s Choice’ and a ‘CD des Doppelmonats’ in Piano News: ‘This is how Mozart must sound, exactly like this…’ Gathered here in an attractively priced box set, they now provide a wider audience with the opportunity of catching a glimpse of how Mozart’s music was perceived and handed down during the decades after his death. ARTISTS: Ensemble Leones, Marc Lewon. Agricola was already considered one of the "old masters" soon after his death in 1506. His works were approached with veneration and, already in the early 16th century, regarded as examples of good and demanding counterpoint. As a member of the first generation of genuinely instrumental composers, he wrote not only the masses, motets and chansons that were customary during this period, but also a large number of works without text that were obviously created for instruments by virtue of their construction. As a result, his musical rhetoric went considerably farther than his otherwise congenial colleagues Josquin Desprez and Heinrich Isaak, and he composed instrumental works that were far ahead of his time. Agricola's style was not only distinguished by refined writing, however; his contemporaries also regarded him as "unusual, peculiar and mad": he cultivated a "dark style" to which one only has access through "experiencing" his music - to some extent by "living through" the works.

On this occasion, he is bringing to our attention a scarcely-known composer – in Louis Le Prince – who worked in Lisieux in Lower Normandy, interspersing the maître de chapelle’s Missa Macula non est in te with a mighty handful of motets by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (a figure much better known to us today in part through Hervé Niquet’s own frequent stylistically-masterful renditions of Charpentier’s music). Mass and motets are given in this new recording from Glossa in versions for female voices and instruments. Whilst some of the pieces sung here were written specifically for high voices, it was a regular practice in the Baroque era to perform polyphonic masses with forces locally available and, thus, convents could well have sung Le Prince’s six-part mass – a homage to the Virgin Mary – making use of female singers. This practice is outlined by Fannie Vernaz in her accompanying booklet article and follows in the line of Hervé Niquet’s exploration of the Requiem Mass by Pierre Bouteiller (a work which he adapted for a choir consisting only of male voices). The gorgeous sonorities of Charpentier’s motets (and a petit motet by Jean-Baptiste Lully) contribute to an Office constructed by Hervé Niquet around the Ordinary of the Mass by Louis Le Prince, to demonstrate with great clarity the variety of the musical glories of Louis XIV’s grand siècle. With I Viaggi di Faustina GLOSSA is launching a new collection focusing on famous Italian singers from the 17th and 18th centuries, whose travels bear witness to the intense level of artistic activity then taking place in the major cities of Europe. Faustina Bordoni, the brilliant diva with whom we begin this series pursued her career mainly in Naples (the principal focus of this CD) and Venice, but also in cities such as Bologna, Parma, Dresden and London. These were cities hosting – with great success – operas by Johann Adolph Hasse (Bordoni’s husband), Nicola Popora, Leonardo Vinci, Francesco Mancini and Domenico Sarro; most of these composers are represented on this first selection of wonderful arias. The artist chosen to reincarnate Faustina Bordoni has been the singer considered by many to be the leading soprano in Baroque music today: Roberta Invernizzi. In a repertory fitting her like a glove, Invernizzi displays all her renowned sensitivity and virtuosity along with a sense of mutual musical understanding – which is second bar none – with Antonio Florio and I Turchini. This is Roberta Invernizzi’s second release on the label as the main protagonist, the first being her outstanding and very highly-appreciated album of Vivaldi arias (GCD922901). Devised by the scholar Dinko Fabris and the conductor Antonio Florio, with further musicological advice coming from Juan José Carreras and Giulia Veneziano, this new collection also gives a central importance to the texts and to the iconography which provide each recording with their context; in this way endeavouring to create the most complete and stimulating vision possible of the conditions which were surrounding these inimitable artists.

ARTISTS: Premysl Vojta, French Horn, Tomoko Sawano, piano. Horn-playing has a long tradition in Bohemia, ranging from the 18th century (J. V. Stich-Punto) to the Tylšar brothers and Radek Baborák. And Přemysl Vojta is without question a superlative pursuer of this line. He earned his most remarkable triumph in September 2010 at the ARD competition in Munich (1st prize, the audience award and two other special prizes). Upon receiving the Beethoven Ring at the Beethovenfest in Bonn, he joined the ranks of young stars of classical music (Gustavo Dudamel, Julia Fisher, Lisa Batiashvili, etc.). For his debut album, Přemysl Vojta, currently solo horn of the Staatskapelle Berlin, has chosen pieces by 20th-century Prague modernists. As he himself puts it: “Works by unknown composers who experienced World War II, the German occupation, liberation, occupation by the ‘liberators’ and the bullying by the communist regime. May this recording be a reminiscence of that time and the people who lived through it.” In addition to reflecting the fraught epoch and Slavonic musicality in the Janáček spirit, these works place extreme technical demands on their performers. Přemysl Vojta, however, is up to the challenge and with true mastery duly demonstrates his belonging to the famous Czech horn tradition. SUPRAPHON FL 4129 Label Code 332 Price Code C SMETANA – JANACEK - PROKOFIEV Leos Janacek (1854-1928): Sonata for Violin and Piano, Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884): From the Homeland. Two pieces for Violin and Piano, Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953): Sonata for Violin Solo, Op. 115, Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in F minor, Op. 80. ARTISTS: Josef Spacek, violin, Miroslav Sekera, piano. Still only 26, the violinist Josef Špaček has already covered an enormous amount of ground. After completing his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, he attended Itzhak Perlman’s class at the Juilliard School in New York, and he has given solo performances under the baton of outstanding conductors (Bělohlavek, Eschenbach, Honeck, Hrůša). In 2009 he won the Michael Hill International Violin Competition (New Zealand), in May 2012 he became a laureate of the closely observed Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels and in the same year led the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra as concert master at the chief conductor Jiři Bělohlavek’s inauguration concerts. For his Supraphon debut, Josef Špaček has chosen works by Slavonic composers. The two duets from Smetana’s From My Homeland are considered the counterpart to his cycle My Country, while Janaček’s Sonata, which was introduced to the world by Paul Hindemith as a soloist, is evidently the most frequently performed Czech violin sonata. And when it comes to Prokofiev, the Russian master’s music is a truly heartfelt matter for Špaček (as a soloist, he has executed both of his concertos). The pianist Miroslav Sekera is a wonderful partner to Špaček on the recording, as are the superb and inspiring acoustics of the Dvořak Hall of Prague’s Rudolfinum. SUPRAPHON FL 4131 Label Code 332 Price Code C LEOS JANACEK – SINFONIETTA, TARAS BULBA, THE BALLAD OF BLANIK, THE FIDDLER’S CHILD ARTISTS: Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Tomas Netopil. Janáček did not write a great quantity of symphonic works. Besides the Lachian Dances and an outline of the symphony Danube, they merely number the four compositions on this CD: three symphonic poems and the celebrated Sinfonietta. The symphonic poems, created within eight years between 1913 and 1920, reflect the turbulent political events and social tensions of the time, as well as Janáček’s keen interest in Czech and Russian literature. The Ballad of Blaník is based on a poem by Jaroslav Vrchlický, while The Fiddler’s Child was written to verses by Svatopluk Čech. When reading Gogol’s novella Taras Bulba, Janáček was impressed by its hero, a Cossack chieftain, and referred to the author as the “prophet of the Slavs”. Sinfonietta, indisputably the most significant Janáček orchestral piece, was premiered in June 1926 in Prague by Václav Talich with the Czech Philharmonic.
