Remarks from Fr. Michael

Dear Parishioners, April 2019 I would like to report some aspects of the parish life that happened during the month of March, a couple events on a personal level and a few comments on Holy Week.

A. With joy we announce the Ionian Village Scholarship that is

available for the graduating Seniors of High School to apply. We are

giving an extension to apply until April 30th. Please pick up

applications from the Office.

B. For some time, I am trying to investigate the possibility, as Holy

Trinity Cathedral, to serve food once a month in a deprived neighborhood in Harrisburg and also once a

month in Carlisle. While in Harrisburg, we serve monthly as a Pan‐Orthodox Community at Bethesda

Mission Women’s Shelter, we were unable as Holy Trinity Cathedral to serve the needy in a poor

neighborhood yet. Though in Carlisle, we were able with Mrs. Thana Ward help to go to the Community

Cares on West Penn Street and serve the homeless on Saturday, March 16th. It was a very special day

bringing food to the adults and children who were in need. They loved the full meal we served that was

prepared in our Cathedral’s kitchen. Thank you to all who responded with their presence and

commitment.

C. I would also like to share with you two personal events.

1. You may know we had our annual Clergy Metropolis Retreat on Tuesday, March 19th through

Thursday, March 21st. We traveled on Tuesday and we started our Program. On Wednesday morning,

March 20th I was not feeling well. The previous night, I was very uncomfortable and did not sleep well.

Early in the morning I was not feeling like myself and started preparing for the Service. My condition

was declining. I had severe chest pain and hardly able to walk. My face was pale, and I was clammy.

Using a blood pressure monitor, it indicated it was 89 over 53 and I measured it again five minutes later

to verify the same numbers. I was cold and shaking with the pain in my chest that was increasing. I

communicated with Fr. Aaron and Fr. George, our Chancellor and left to the Hospital in Latrobe, PA just

30 minutes away . I went to the ER. There they thought that I was in congestive heart failure. The X‐rays

and blood work did not show any heart attack and the CT scan indicated fluid in my heart and lungs.

Also, it showed inflammation ‐ pericarditis. They kept me in the hospital treating me with steroids,

Motrin, pantoprazole and Tylenol. Through the IV, they were infusing most of these remedies. The

chest pain was declining throughout the day. More tests were done echo, x‐rays, blood work. On

Wednesday night I slept well. On Thursday they continued the tests and late afternoon at 5pm, I was

discharged and came home. My discharged Diagnosis says: Pericardial effusion, chest pain on

breathing. Pleural condition, unspecified. This means that more tests needed to be done for a more

accurate diagnosis. Now that I am writing these lines, I am on a heart monitor for 48 hours and getting

ready to go for blood work. Glory be to God!!! My request is to please keep me in your prayers. Thank

you.

THE SOURCE APRIL 2019 2. The other personal event that happened was on Monday, March 25th. In the evening our

daughter, Georgia gave birth to her first child, a beautiful baby girl, Irini. We were there on Monday

evening and night and after spending some time on Tuesday morning we traveled back to Camp Hill to

our Cathedral to see the ladies working and making koulourakia and bringing to them our amazing

good news!

D. We just celebrated March 25th as the Feast of the Lord and of the Virgin Mary. This feast is the

first event of making our salvation, become a reality since the second Person of the Holy Trinity was

conceived in the pure womb of Mary. Nine months later, she is giving birth to a God‐man, our Savior

and Redeemer who will teach, heal, suffer and be crucified, resurrected and ascended to Heaven for our

Salvation.

Also, we celebrated March 25th as Greek Independence Day at the Capitol with parishioners of our Cathedral, AHEPA members along with members of the Congress and the Senate with our Olympic Flames Group dancing. This event was coordinated by Dr. Michael Billys and we are grateful to him for taking care of all the details. Thank you. At the same time, we celebrated March 25th at our Greek School Program which was celebrated by a Doxology in the Cathedral on Sunday, March 24th, with a parade in which our students, teachers and friends participated and later with a luncheon and a very good Program. Especially we had the presence of an acting Kolokotronis, a teacher of our Greek School, Mr. George Giannaris. He even had the attire of the General of that era and a horse to indicate how Kolokotronis traveled. George came up with the idea to focus for these celebrations on the very person of Kolokotronis since he was the General during the War of Independence and he was a very God‐fearing and faithful Christian. The pictures in this issue describe some of the memories of an unforgettable event and celebration that we experienced. I think the students will remember the seriousness of remembering our roots. Thank you, George, for making the March 25th celebration more alive, meaningful and elaborate for our kids and all of us. Chronia Polla!!! E. Our journey of Pilgrimage through Great Lent continues and becomes intensified. We are

approaching the last part of Great Lent and quickly reaching Holy Week.

Why do we call it Holy and Great Week? St. John Chrysostom states that the Holy and Great Week while in length does not have more hours or bigger days, though, it does have sacred and magnificent events which happen to our master Christ. They are the summit of His earthly life. They are the mirror of the human race. Whoever wishes to see his depths and widths may look into the Holy Passion of Christ. Indeed, Christ came on earth to enlighten our chaos. Here Christ is coming. How does He come? He comes as the Bridegroom. Why does He come as the Bridegroom? Because He is looking for the Bride. And which is the Bride? Our Church. And personally, for each of us, our soul. For our soul, Christ came. To be united with our soul. Though to be united with our soul, Christ wishes to find the bride‐soul with a clean garment, with the wedding garment. Christ Himself has brought this garment from heaven. This is the new creation, the new life, the divine grace. Here on earth will happen the engagement of our soul with Christ. In heaven the perfect wedding will follow. Though let us watch!! No one soul will be able to be with Christ without the garment of the

THE SOURCE APRIL 2019 soul. This garment He gives it in the Church, totally as a gift. As long as we are asking Him for it. He will give it immediately. Are we going to ask Him or are we going to remain “outside of the Bridal Chambers?” Without any doubt, the garment is asked to be given by those who feel their nakedness. Their sinfulness. Their soul will be cleansed by repentance and Holy Confession. The others think that the Bridegroom is not needed for them. They are self‐sufficient. This is the reason that they remain “outside of the Bridal Chambers.” During these holy days may we look carefully inside ourselves, recognize a longing to have Him, ask for the garment and welcome Him as He is coming voluntarily on His Holy Passion. Amen. Beloved, may we all experience a blessed Holy Week and a glorious feast of the Resurrection.

Αγαπητοί μου, Απρίλιος 2019 Θα ήθελα να αναφέρω ορισμένες πτυχές της ζωής της ενορίας που συνέβησαν κατά τη διάρκεια του Μαρτίου, δύο συμβάντα σε προσωπικό επίπεδο καθώς επίσης δυό σκέψεις για την Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα. Α. Με χαρά αναγγέλλουμε την Υποτροφία του Ιονικού Χωριού που είναι διαθέσιμη για τους υποψηφίους τελειόφοιτους του Λυκείου να υποβάλουν αίτηση. Δίνουμε παράταση μέχρι τις 30 Απριλίου. Παρακαλώ παραλάβετε τις αιτήσεις Β. Γιακάποιοδιάστημα, προσπαθώ να διερευνήσω τη δυνατότητα, όπως ο Καθεδρικός ναός της Αγίας Τριάδας, να προσφέρει φαγητό μία φορά το μήνα σε μια υποβαθμισμένη γειτονιά στο Harrisburg και επίσης μία φορά το μήνα στο Καρλάιλ. Ενώ στο Χάρισμπουργκ, ετοιμάζουμε και σερβίρουμε μηνιαία ως παντορθόδοξη κοινότητα στο Bethesda Mission στις γυναίκες, δεν μπορέσαμε να βρούμε ακόμα τον τόπο από όπου ο Καθεδρικός Ναός της Αγίας Τριάδας να σερβίρει φαγητό στους άπορους σε μια φτωχή γειτονιά. Αν και στο Καρλάιλ, ήμασταν σε θέση να σερβίρουμε φαγητό με την βοήθεια της Κας Αθανασίας Ward στο West Penn Street τους άστεγους το Σάββατο 16 Μαρτίου. Ήταν μια πολύ ξεχωριστή μέρα όπου φέραμε φαγητό στους ενήλικες και τα παιδιά που είχαν ανάγκη. Χαρείκαν το πλήρες γεύμα που σερβίραμε που ετοιμάσθηκε στην κουζίνα του Καθεδρικού Ναού μας. Σας ευχαριστώ όλους όσοι ανταποκρίθηκαν με την παρουσία και τη θυσία σας. Γ. Θαήθελαεπίσηςναμοιραστώμαζίσαςδύοπροσωπικάγεγονότα: 1. Μπορεί να γνωρίζετε ότι είχαμε την ετήσιασυνάντηση των Ιερέων της Μητροπόλεώς μας την Τρίτη, από τις 19 Μαρτίου έως την Πέμπτη, 21 Μαρτίου. Ταξιδεύσαμε την Τρίτη και ξεκινήσαμε το Πρόγραμμά μας. Την Τετάρτη το πρωί, στις 20 Μαρτίου δεν αισθάνθηκα καλά. Την προηγούμενη νύχτα, ήμουν πολύ ανήσυχος και δεν κοιμήθηκα καλά. Νωρίς το πρωί δεν ένιώθα σαν τον εαυτό μου και άρχισα να προετοιμάζουμε για την Λειτουργία των Προγηγιασμένων Δώρων. Η κατάσταση μου χειροτέρεβε. Είχα έντονο θωρακικό πόνο και δεν μπορούσα να περπατήσω. Το πρόσωπό μου ήταν χλωμό, και ήμουν ιδρωμένος. Χρησιμοποιώντας μια συσκευή παρακολούθησης της πίεσης του αίματος, έδειξε ότι ήταν 89/ 53 και μέτρησα πάλι σε πέντε λεπτά αργότερα για να επαληθευθούν οι ίδιοι αριθμοί. Κρύωνα υπερβολικά και έτρεμα με τον πόνο στο στήθος μου να αυξανόταν. Επικοινώνησα με τον Fr. Aaron και Fr. Γεώργιο,

THE SOURCE APRIL 2019 τον Πρωτοσύγγελό μας, και ξεκίνησα για το νοσοκομείο στο Latrobe της ΡΑ., μόλις 30 λεπτά μακριά. Πήγα στα Επείγοντα Περιστατικά. Εκεί σκέφτηκαν ότι ήμουν σε ανακοπή καρδίας η καρδιακή προσβολή. Οι ακτινογραφίες και οι εξετάσεις αίματος δεν έδειξαν καρδιακή προσβολή και η μαγνητικήεξέταση έδειξε υγρό στην καρδιά και στους πνεύμονες. Επίσης, έδειξε φλεγμονή στο περικάρδιο. Με κράτησαν στο νοσοκομείο με θεραπεία με στεροειδή, Motrin, παντοπραζόλη και Tylenol. Μέσα από το ορό, εισήγαγαν τα περισσότερα από αυτά τα φάρμακα. Ο πόνος στο στήθος μειωνόταν καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της ημέρας. Περισσότερες εξετάσεις έγιναν μετά όπως ηχώ, ακτινογραφίες, εξετάσεις αίματος. Την Τετάρτη το βράδυ κοιμήθηκα καλά. Την Πέμπτη συνέχισαν τις δοκιμές και αργά το απόγευμα στις 5μ.μ., πείρα εξιτήριο και ταξίδεψα πίσω στο σπίτι. Η διάγνωσή μου λέει: Περικαρδιακή συλλογή, θωρακικό πόνος στην αναπνοή. Υπερευαισθησία, απροσδιόριστη. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι πρέπει να γίνουν περισσότερες δοκιμές για πιο ακριβή διάγνωση. Τώρα που γράφω αυτές τις γραμμές, είμαι σε καρδιακή οθόνη για 48 ώρες και είμαι έτοιμος να πάω για εξετάσεις αίματος. Δόξα τω Θεώ. Η παράκλησή μου είναι να με κρατήσετε σας παρακαλώ στην προσευχή σας. Ευχαριστώ πολύ. 2. Το άλλο προσωπικό γεγονός που συνέβη ήταν τη Δευτέρα, 25 Μαρτίου. Το βράδυ η κόρη μας, η Γεωργία, γέννησε το πρώτο της παιδί, ένα όμορφο κοριτσάκι, την Ειρήνη. Ήμασταν εκεί τη Δευτέρα το βράδυ και πιό αργά και αφού περάσαμε λίγο χρόνο την Τρίτη το πρωί, ταξιδέψαμε πίσω στο Camp Hill στον Καθεδρικό Ναό μας για να δούμε τις κυρίες που δούλευαν και έκαναν τα κουλουράκια και τους φέραμε τα χαρούμενα καλά νέα μας! Δ. Μόλιςεορτάσαμετις25Μαρτίου ως γιορτή του Κυρίου και της Παναγίας. Αυτή η γιορτή είναι το πρώτο γεγονός που κάνει τη σωτηρία μας, να γίνει πραγματικότητα από τότε που το δεύτερο Πρόσωπο της Αγίας Τριάδας συνελήφθη στην αγνή μήτρα της Παναγίας. Εννέα μήνες αργότερα η Παναγία γεννά τον Θεό-άνθρωπο, τον Σωτήρα και Λυτρωτή μας, που θα δίδάξε, θεράπευσε, υπέφερε, εσταυρωθη, ανεστήθη και ανελήφθη στους Ουρανούς για τη Σωτηρία μας. Επίσης, εορτάσαμε την 25η Μαρτίου ως Ημέρα της Ελληνικής Ανεξαρτησίας στο Καπιτώλιο με ενορίτες του Καθεδρικού Ναού μας, μέλη της AHEPA μαζί με μέλη του Κογκρέσου και της Γερουσίας με την χορευτική ομάδα της Ολυμπιακής Φλόγας. Αυτή η εκδήλωση συντονίστηκε από τον Dr. Michael Billys και είμαστε ευγνώμονες σε αυτόν για τη οργάνωση και την φροντίδα όλων των λεπτομερειών. Ευχαριστούμε πολύ. Ταυτόχρονα, εορτάσαμε την 25η Μαρτίου με το Ελληνικό μας Σχολικό Πρόγραμμα, το οποίο γιορτάστηκε από τη Δοξολογία στον Καθεδρικό Ναό την Κυριακή 24η Μαρτίου, με παρέλαση στην οποία συμμετείχαν οι μαθητές, οι δάσκαλοι και οι φίλοι μας, και αργότερα με γεύμα και με ένα πολύ καλό Πρόγραμμα. Ιδιαίτερα είχαμε την παρουσία ενός ενεργού Κολοκοτρώνη, του Δασκάλου του Ελληνικού μας Σχολείου, κ. Γεωργίου Γιάνναρη. Είχε ντυθεί με την φορεσιά του Στρατηγού της τότε εποχής και είχε φέρει ακόμα και άλογο για να δείξει πώς φαινόταν και πώς ταξίδευε τότε ο Κολοκοτρώνης. Ο Γιώργος ήρθε με την ιδέα να επικεντρωθούμε εφέτος σε αυτούς τους εορτασμούς στον ίδιο τον Κολοκοτρώνη επειδή ήταν ο Στρατηγός κατά τη διάρκεια του πολέμου της Ανεξαρτησίας και ήταν ένας πολύ πιστός Χριστιανός. Οι φωτογραφίες σε αυτό το τεύχος περιγράφουν μερικές από τις αναμνήσεις ενός αξέχαστου γεγονότος και εορτασμού που βιώσαμε. Νομίζω ότι οι μαθητές θα θυμούνται τη σοβαρότητα της Ελληνο-ορθοδόξου ταυτότητός μας. Σε ευχαριστούμε, Γιώργο, για το γεγονός ότι η γιορτή της 25ης Μαρτίου έγινε πιο ζωντανή, πιό επίκαιρη και πιό ελκυστική για τα παιδιά μας και όλους εμάς. Χρόνια Πολλά !!! Ε. Το ταξίδι μας στο Προσκύνημα μέσω Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής συνεχίζεται και εντείνεται. Προσεγγίζουμε το τελευταίο μέρος της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής και φτάνουμε γρήγορα στην Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα.

THE SOURCE APRIL 2019 Γιατί την ονομάζουμε Αγία και Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα; Ο Αγ. Ιωάννης ο Χρυσόστομος λέγει ότι δέν είναι μεγάλη εβδομάδα επειδή έχει περισσότερες ώρες η μεγαλύτερες μέρες. Είναι μεγάλη γιατί τά γεγονότα πού συνέβησαν στόν Χριστό είναι Παμμέγιστα καί ιερά. Συναποτελούν τό υψηλότερο σημείο τής επί γής ζωής Του. Είναι ο καθρέπτης τών ανθρώπων. Οποιος θά ήθελε νά δή τό βάθος του καί τό πλάτος του άς κυταχθεί μέσα στά πάθη τού Χριστού. Ο Χριστός ήλθε στή γή γιά νά ρίξει φώς στό χάος μας. Ιδού ο Νυμφίος έρχεται. Αν ρωτήσωμε: Πώς έρχεται; Ερχεται σάν Νυμφίος. Καί άν ξαναρωτήσωμε; Γιατί έρχεται σάν νυμφίος; Επειδή θέλει νύμφη. Τότε ίσως έχουμε τό ενδιαφέρον νά μάθουμε: Ποιά είναι η νύμφη; Η Εκκλησία μας. Νύμφηπροσωπικά γιά τόν καθένα μας είναιηψυχή μας. Γι’ αυτήν ήλθε ο Χριστός στή γή. Γιά νά ενωθεί μαζί της. Ομως γιά νά ενωθεί μαζί της θέλει τή νύμφη-ψυχή μέ στολή καθαρή, μέ ένδυμα γάμου. Αυτή τήν στολή τήν έφερε ο ίδιος ο Χριστός από τόν ουρανό. Είναι η καινούργια ζωή, είναι η Θεία Χάρις, είναι η ενάρετη ζωή. Εδώ στή γή γίνονται οι αρραβώνες τής ψυχής μας μέ τόν Χριστό. Οι γάμοι θά γίνουν στόν ουρανό. Ας προσέξωμε όμως πολύ!! Καμμιά ψυχή δέν θά ημπορέσει νά νυμφευτεί τόν Χριστό χωρίς τής ψυχής τή στολή. Αυτή τή στολή τήν δίνει ο Χριστός στήν Εκκλησία Του δωρεάν. Αρκεί νά Τού τή ζητήσουμε. Θά μάς τή δώσει αμέσως. Λοιπόν, θά Του τή ζητήσουμε η θά μείνουμς «έξω τού νυμφώνος;» Τή στολή τή ζητούν όσοι καταλαβαίνουν τή γύμνια τους. Τήν αμαρτωλότητά τους. Οσοι μετανοούν και εξομολογούνται. Οι άλλοι νομίζουν ότι δέν τούς χρειάζεται ο Νυμφίος. Είναι αυτάρκεις. Γι’ αυτό καί μένουν «έξω τού νυμφώνος.» Αυτές τίς άγιες ημέρες άς κυττάξουμε προσεκτικά μέσα μας, άς νοιώσουμε τόν πόθο γιά νά έχουμε τόν Κύριο μαζί μας, ας Τόν παρακαλέσουμε νά μάς δώσει τήν στολή καί νά Τόν δεχθούμε καθώς έρχεται «επί τό εκούσιον Πάθος.» Αμήν. Αγαπητοί μου, εύχομαι νά νοιώσουμε ευλογημένη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα καί νά πανηγυρίσουμε τήν εορτή τής Αναστάσεως.

A NOTE FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL

Dear Parishioners,

Pardon our dust! As you can see, our beautification continues as we install marble in the Narthex and in the main aisle approaching the Solea. Thank you for your understanding while we move as quickly as we can to complete this project.

As we progress through our Lenten Season and approach Holy Week and the Blessed Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I want to re-publish the guidance we shared last year about our Holy Week Services.

Many of us have very full schedules and do the best we can to attend Holy Week services. If your schedule requires you to leave by a particular time, the Parish Council asks that you please sit as close as you can to the front of the church. Parish Council members will be dismissing parishioners pew by pew, and it is very unsettling for all if you end up confronting parish council members and fellow parishioners so you can move to the front of the line. Thank you for your consideration so we can all participate in Holy Week services in "a holy, perfect, peaceful and sinless way,".

During the Great Lenten Period have a special devotional time with your child/children-the events of Lenten period, events of Holy week, brainstorm the meaning of Love, Kindness, Feeding our soul with Prayer and Reading of Spiritual Material.

GREEK SCHOOL We had a most beautiful March 25th Independence Day Celebration with our Greek School on Sunday, March 24th. We began with a procession into the

Church and a Doxology was sung. Afterwards we made our way outside and saw our children parade with their costumes escorting in our own Kolokotronis with his horse. Mr. George Giannaris most graciously portrayed General Kolokotronis to show the children and help them understand what fighting the war for independence meant to this poor nation. We thank George for his profound initiative which helped bring to realization this hero of 1821. Lastly, we all went into the Hall and had a wonderful lunch and the program followed. The songs and poems from the children were beautiful and the skits portrayed Kolokotronis’ actions in the war. Very powerful and meaningful plays.

Friday, March 15th the women of Philoptochos prepared meals for the homeless shelter in Carlisle. On Saturday, March 16th the Philoptochos women served the meals at CARES and we also delivered meals to Safe Harbor, and the Salvation Army. We would like to greatly thank ALL the those who helped with this project. Thank you to the individuals who provided Lenten meals for the Wednesday, March 13th Pre-sanctified Liturgy Lenten Meal. Our March meeting was very well attended. Following our business meeting, an excellent lunch was hosted by Nick and Linda Mallios, Ed and Thana Ward, and Vee Mazias. Will Pananas from Chambersburg returned as our speaker at the meeting. He presented quite a bit of information about the life and times of Theodoros Kolokotronis. Because of the Philoptochos baking schedule, we will not be able to meet on the first Tuesday for April. So, we will be meeting on the first Thursday of April. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, April 4th. The meeting will be held in the Social Hall and start at 11:00 a.m. The hosts for the meeting will be Christina Stamos, Koula Kokos and Sophia Kaldes. We will have a few young ladies from the parish to talk about their experiences at the Ionian Village in Greece. Membership in the Sts. Joachim and Anna Society is open to Orthodox parishioners who are 55 and over. However, any parishioner can attend our meetings and participate in our trips and other activities.

CHURCH LENDING LIBRARY The church library contains information about Orthodoxy and Greece for you and your children. If you would like to borrow a book, fill out the information sheet found in the Library notebook binder. When you return it, be sure to list the date returned by your original sign in. Keep the books as long as you like; just be sure to return them within a reasonable amount of time so that your fellow parishioners may read them as well. Thank you.

HOLY TRINITY BOOKS & GIFTS Great Lent is here, and the bookstore has an assortment of children’s books about Easter and its meaning. We will again have an assortment of Pascha candles. These are perfect for children, grandchildren, godchildren, etc. We have a large selection of items in the bookstore. We provide such as icons, censers, charcoal and incense for your household use. All proceeds from the bookstore either go directly back into the bookstore or into the parish. We have a selection of CD’s that Father Michael picked up during the Clergy-Laity Conference this past summer. We are also constantly adding new book titles to our excellent collection of Orthodox books for adults and children. We can also special-order books, icons and other items that are not normally stocked in the bookstore. We also order icons and other items from the Holy Protection Monastery when needed. We have the wine that is used for communion available for purchase and donation to Father Michael for use during communion. We recently added bottles of light Olive oil that can be donated to Father for the Altar vigil light. We also carry a burial cloth (Σαβανο) that has been blessed in Jerusalem at the tomb of Christ. This can be used for funerals. Holy Trinity Books and Gifts’ normal operating hours are following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, and the day when the Sts. LADIES’ BEREAVEMENT GROUP

This group meets once a month on a Thursday. Our next gathering will be held on April 11th, 2019 at 11:30am. We speak on different topics that concern the group and discuss ways to cope with grief. Please consider coming.

CONCERNED MOTHERS GROUP The goal of the group is to foster spiritual dialogue among mothers in our community in regard to raising our children in an Orthodox Christian home. We can all probably list many challenges we have faced as our children have journeyed through preschool to high school. The topics of the group will focus on making Orthodoxy a practical, living experience in our daily lives. Father Michael is leading the group. We meet in the Library monthly. Our next scheduled monthly meeting will be Wednesday, May 1st at 7:00 p.m.

AHEPA WISHES KALO MINA OF APRIL 2019 GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY AT THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE

CAPITAL – March 20th, 2019

On March 20, 2019, a delegation from The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral and the AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive

Association) gathered at the Harrisburg State Capitol to celebrate the 198th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence which started on

March 25, 1821 and achieved the liberation of the Greek nation

from the 400-year occupation by the Ottoman Turkish Empire.

Distinguished guests from the American Hellenic Education Progressive Association (AHEPA) Power District #4 were District Governor Charles Mackenzie and District Marshal Dr. Michael Billys, along with Lieutenant Colonel Vaseilios Bozoudis of the Hellenic Army currently serving at The Defense Distribution Center (DDC) in New Cumberland, Dr. Zissis Chroneos, Assoc. Professor of Pediatrics, Hershey Medical Center/Penn State

and Protopsalti Tom Paparoidamis who all represented the Holy Trinity Cathedral and the AHEPA Harrisburg Chapter #64 to recognize Greek Independence Day at the State Capitol. This highlighted the role of AHEPA in the life of Greek immigrants. AHEPA was formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1922 to help Greek immigrants to assimilate into American society and to counter KKK attacks on young Greek men. A delegation from the Holy Trinity Cathedral joined these distinguished guests to participate in the programs at the State Capitol. The day will begin with a tour of the Capitol from 8:30 am – 9:00 am. Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral choir


soloist Ms. Diane Foutres will sing both national anthems accompanied by pianist Peter Ariano. The Olympic Flames will follow led by Director Ann Ariano while dancing to very inspiring Greek music from 9:10 - 9:40 am to the delight of the audience on the floor in front of the Capitol Rotunda. These dancers include Vasoula Petinas, Tina Kaufman, Will Winters, Angelo Winters, Peter Ariano, Nicoletta Ariano, Lambrini Balafoutas, Mia Demopoulos, Maria Shay, and Kristina Chroneos. The entire group was then honored with several short speeches from Reps. Sheryl Delozier, Ryan Mackenzie and Greg Rothman, which was followed by a special presentation from the honorable Senator Mike Regan and concluded with a photo shoot of the entire group underneath the Capitol Rotunda. This event is a tribute to the memory of Stella Jatras, departed wife of Col. George Jatras, who was the originator of this event. A brief recess ensued only to be resumed with a visit to the House of Representatives where our group was recognized by the entire body of the House officially present dignified by Speaker of the House Mike Turzai. Our 5 AHEPAN honorees will then be introduced and recognized and introduced to the entire body. Other activities included the opening prayer at the House of Representatives with a presentation of the official Greek Independence Day “House Proclamation” by

the Honorable Mike Turzai, Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Representative Sheryl Delozier, representing the 88th Legislative District in which Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral is located, personally greeted each member of the delegation. Representative Greg Rothman, representing the 87th Legislative District was the sponsor of House the Resolution and spoke on the House floor about the Greek Independence Day and our Greek community in general. Representative Ryan Mackenzie, representing the 134th Legislative District (Allentown, Pennsylvania area) and local AHEPA chapter president spoke on the House floor about the Greek Independence Day, AHEPA and our Greek community in general. The group also met with other Representatives and Senators. The day included a tour and pictures by the Capitol Photographer at the governor’s reception area and at the rotunda steps inside the State Capitol, where for a week, a Greek flag and an American flag stood side-by- side, with a poster identifying the flag and the reason for its presence. Unfortunately, Father Michael and Father Aaron were not be able to attend this year because of the Clergy-Laity Retreat in Pittsburgh conflicting with this schedule. Culminating our journey to the Capitol will be a visit with Lt. Governor John Fetterman and meeting with him personally at 11:45 pm. The entire journey concluded at 12:30 pm.

The day included a meeting with Lt. Governor John Fetterman who presented the group with the “Governor’s Proclamation”. The Governor’s Proclamation recognizes the struggles of the Greek people for freedom in their homeland and to

reflect upon the self-determination for all the world’s people.” The Proclamation also recognizes the links between our two nations, as it states, “Whereas the ancient Greeks developed democracy… the Founding Fathers of the United States of America drew upon the experience and philosophy of ancient Greece in forming our representative democracy.” It furthermore recognizes that, “many Americans fought alongside the Greeks in the fight for Greek independence, and Greece has been allied with the United States in every major international conflict in the 20th Century.” The Proclamation also quotes Sir Winston Churchill when he said of the Greeks, “Hence, we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks.” There is so much the world owes to Greece but if you bear in mind that one third of the English vocabulary is in fact Greek, you can then understand the magnitude of Greek culture. Not only was Greece the birthplace of Democracy and modern Western philosophy, but universities today still study such

It was the works of the Greek philosophers that laid the foundation for their contribution in math, science, medicine, law and politics. Many of these cultural aspects began with Greece’s Golden Age, a time of peace and cultural prosperity, and it was the time from which most of Greece’s contributions to Western civilization, organized Democracy and the Olympics all began. No matter where you are in the world today, you will come across Greek-inspired architecture and its profound influence has endured for more than 2,000 years and is seen in buildings across modern America.

GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY – MARCH 25TH, 1821

" Greek Independence Day, national holiday celebrated annually in Greece on March 25, commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821.

Greece had been part of the Ottoman Empire since 1453. The Greek revolt was precipitated on March 25, 1821, when Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the flag of revolution over the Monastery of Agia Lavra in the Peloponnese. The cry “Freedom or death” became the motto of the revolution. The Greeks experienced early successes on the battlefield, including the capture of Athens in June 1822, but

infighting ensued. By 1827 Athens and most of the Greek isles had been recaptured by the Turks. Just as the revolution appeared to be on the verge of failure, Great Britain, France, and Russia intervened in the conflict. The Greek struggle had elicited strong sympathy in Europe, and many leading intellectuals had promoted the Greek cause, including the English poet Lord Byron. At the naval Battle of Navarino, the combined British, French, and Russian forces destroyed an Ottoman-Egyptian fleet. The revolution ended in 1829 when the Treaty of Edirne [Treaty of Adrianople (Sept. 14, 1829)], established an independent Greek state.

In celebration of Greek Independence Day, towns and villages throughout Greece hold a school flag parade, during which schoolchildren march in traditional Greek costume and carry Greek flags. There is also an armed forces parade in Athens". (Bibliography: Encyclopedia Britannica)

Philhellenism ("the love of Greek culture") and philhellene ("the admirer of Greeks and everything Greek"), from the Greek word "φίλος" philos "friend, lover" and "ἑλληνισμός"hellenism "Greek", (an intellectual fashion prominent mostly at the turn of the 19th century) contributed to the sentiments (feelings)that led Europeans such as Lord Byron or Charles Nicolas Fabvier to advocate for Greek independence from the Ottoman Empire.

The annual recognition of Greek Independence Day is an opportunity for all of us to be proud of our Greek heritage and to be thankful for the blessing of living in The United States of America Ζήτω το Έθνος! Zito i Ellas! Zito i Orthodoxia! God Bless America!

2019 AHEPA SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT Once again, the John L. Prokop/Alfreda Vladyka-Prokop Order of AHEPA Chapter # 64 Scholarships are being offered to all interested students. Both the Merit Scholarships and the General Scholarships will be awarded to qualified recipients. Merit recipients will receive a minimum $1,500.00 and General Scholarship recipients will receive a minimum of $500. Please note that the scholarship is renewable four times, and does not have to be in consecutive years.

Requirements are: 1.) That you, your parents, or your grandparents are either a steward or stewards of the Holy

Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Camp Hill, Pa; or you are a child/grandchild of an AHEPAN Brother who is listed in good standing of the AHEPA Chapter #64.

2.) That you are a high school senior about to graduate and apply for acceptance to an accredited institution of higher learning; a student continuing his or her education in an institution of higher learning; or an applicant who is applying to a trade school/vocational school or continuing in such an institution.

3.) That you COMPLETE and submit the AHEPA Scholarship application BY THE DUE DATE! 4.) That you submit an official transcript from your high school or institution of higher education. If applying for a

General Scholarship you must have a 2.5 GPA. Students applying for a merit scholarship while in high school or in college must have a 3.50 GPA to be considered.

THREE HIERARCHS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS FOR GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

In 1981, Drs. Anthony and Joyce Kales conceived, established and originally funded five endowment funds for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. These endowment funds included: The Three Hierarchs Scholarship Awards Fund; Saints Joachim and Anna Senior Citizens Fund; Saints Eleftherios and Stylianos JOY Fund; Saint Gregory Palamas Holy Cross Seminary Fund; and, Saint Cosmas Aitolos Greek School Fund. The Drs. Kales intended the Three Hierarchs Scholarship Awards to recognize and stimulate interest in superior academic achievement among our young parishioners. They continued to fund and manage this endowment until it grew substantially so that it now can provide up to 5 or 6 Three Hierarchs Scholarship Awards yearly from the Drs. Anthony and Joyce Kales Fund within the overall endowment.

In the 1990’s a contribution by Costas and Ekaterina Costopoulos allowed for creation of the Costas and Ekaterina Costopoulos Family Fund within the overall Three Hierarchs Endowment which can provide for an additional yearly scholarship.

Each year, at the beginning of May, all graduating high school seniors who are members of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral community are eligible to submit their high school transcript and information of superior academic achievement and scholastic standing to be considered for this award. The application is evaluated in relation to the following criteria: (1) a combined SAT score for critical reading and math of 1320 or greater (the combined scores must be from the same SAT exam i.e., scores cannot be combined from two separate exams); and (2) membership in the National Honor Society, (3) Grade Point Average of 3.5 or above. The amount of the scholarship awards may vary between $500 and $1500 depending on the amount of funds available for distribution. It is emphasized that the applicants must have taken the SAT examination. i.e. ACT substitution is not allowed. Those graduating high school seniors who wish to be considered for an award may request an application packet from the Church Office. The application with all required information as outlined must be submitted to the Church Office by Sunday, May 6, 2019 to be eligible for consideration. Selected candidate/s will be notified and invited to attend Holy Trinity’s Youth Recognition Sunday on June 2nd to receive the award immediately following Divine Liturgy.

NEOHORITON SYLLOGOS SCHOLARSHIP Each year, graduating high school seniors who are of Neohoriton heritage are eligible to submit their

high school transcript and information of superior academic achievement and scholastic standing to be considered for a Neohoriton Syllogos Scholarship award.

The scholarship award was established to recognize superior academic achievement among our Neohoriti youth. Selection for this scholarship award will be based on a student’s academic performance in relation to the following criteria: (1) Class Ranking; (2) Grade Point Average; and (3) SAT scores. Selected candidates will be notified and invited to the Annual Neohoriton Picnic to be held during the latter part of July to receive the scholarship award.

THE PAPOUTSIS FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

The A.V. Papoutsis Family Hellenic Scholarship Fund was established in 2019 by Mr. Andrew V. Papoutsis in memory of his parents, Vasilios and Demetra Papoutsis, to recognize and support academic and vocational achievement among our young parishioners. Each year, a graduating high school senior who has demonstrated meritorious academic and/or community achievements will receive a $3000 scholarship (with the opportunity for up to 3 additional years of scholarship provided he/she continues to meet the fund’s eligibility requirements). Members of the Camp Hill Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral community or York Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church are eligible to be considered for this award. The A.V. Papoutsis Family Hellenic Scholarship Committee will select the scholarship recipient based on: 1. Financial Need, 2. Academic & Extracurricular Accomplishments 3. Social & Community Standing. PHILOPTOCHOS The St. Catherine Philoptochos Society is offering the annual Eleftheria Zozos Memorial Scholarship to any female parishioner graduating from high school. The scholarship is not based on scholastic ability; rather, it is based strictly on service and involvement with our Cathedral, the High School, and the Civic Community. AGIOS TAXIARHIS EVRYTANIAN ASSOCIATION “VELOUCHI” CHAPTER 18 is happy to announce the availability of scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year. The Evrytanian Association is a philanthropic organization founded in 1944 in Charlotte, NC. The local chapter, Agios Taxiarhis, is one of 18 national chapters. This scholarship is awarded annually to a student whose family is in good standing of the Velouchi organization for the past two years and is an entering freshman or already in college. This scholarship is given solely on the basis of the recipient’s academic accomplishments. Scholarship Requirements and Guidelines: --Student’s family are members of good standing of the Velouchi organization for two years prior to applying for the scholarship. --High school seniors (must be in the process of competing high school). --University/College undergraduate students. --Complete and submit an application by May 20, 2019. --Official high school or undergraduate transcript. --Personal statement (see scholarship application for question). --2 Letters of recommendation from someone who has known you for at least two years. Θα βρείτε ένα έντυπο εγγραφής και χρονοδιάγραμμα στην Πηγή αυτού του μήνα. Συμπληρώστε τη φόρμα μέχρι τις 16 Απριλίου, ώστε να γίνουν σχέδια / προμήθειες. Κατά τη διάρκεια της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής έχετε μία ιδιαίτερα λατρευτική ευκαιρία για το παιδί / τα παιδιά σας - τα γεγονότα της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής, τα γεγονότα της Μεγάλης εβδομάδας, μιλήστε για την έννοια της Αγάπης, της Καλοσύνης, της διατροφής της ψυχής μας με την Προσευχή και την ανάγνωση Πνευματικού Υλικού.

ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ

Είχαμε ένα όμορφο εορτασμό της 25ης Μαρτίου για την Ημέρα της Ανεξαρτησίας με το Ελληνικό μας Σχολείο την Κυριακή 24 Μαρτίου. Ξεκινήσαμε με είσοδο στην Εκκλησία και την Δοξολογία. Στη συνέχεια βγήκαμε έξω και είδαμε την παρέλαση των παιδιών μας με τίς φορεσιές τους που συνόδεύαν τον δικό μας Κολοκοτρώνη με το άλογό του. Ο κ. Γιώργος Γιάνναρης απεικόνισε με χαρά τον Στρατηγό Κολοκοτρώνη για να δείξει στα παιδιά και να τους βοηθήσει να καταλάβουν ποια ήταν η αιτία του πολέμου για την ανεξαρτησία και τι σήμαινε αυτό για το φτωχό έθνος. Ευχαριστούμε τον Γεώργιο για τη υπέροχη πρωτοβουλία του που βοήθησε στην κατανόηση αυτού του ήρωα του

1821. Τέλος, όλοι πήγαμε στην αίθουσα και είχαμε ένα υπέροχο γεύμα και το πρόγραμμα που ακολούθησε. Τα τραγούδια και τα ποιήματα από τα παιδιά ήταν όμορφα και τα σκετς απεικόνιζαν τις ενέργειες του Κολοκοτρώνη στον πόλεμο. Πολύ σημαντικά μηνυματοφόρα σκέτς.

ΦΙΛΟΠΤΩΧΟΣ Την Παρασκευή 15 Μαρτίου οι γυναίκες της Φιλοπτώχου προετοίμασαν γεύμα για το καταφύγιο αστέγων στο Καρλάιλ. Το Σάββατο 16 Μαρτίου οι γυναίκες της Φιλοπτώχου προσέφεραν γεύμα στο CARES και παρέδωσαν επίσης γεύματα στο Safe Harbor και στον Σαλβέισον Αρμι. Θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε θερμά όλους εκείνους που βοήθησαν με αυτό το έργο. Σας ευχαριστούμε για τα άτομα που έφεραν φαγητό την Τετάρτη, 13 Μαρτίου, για την Προηγιασμένη Λειτουργία. THE SOURCE APRIL 2019 4. Εκλογή των μελών του ΔιοικητικούΣυμβουλίου της Φιλοπτώχου στις 28 Μαΐου. Ας εισέλθουμε στην Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή με την αγάπη, την ευγένεια, την εξέταση του εσωτερικού μας, τη διατροφή της ψυχής μας με την προσευχή και την ανάγνωση πνευματικών βιβλίων.

Σύλλογος Αγ. Ιωακείμ καί Αννας Η συνάντησή μας το Μάρτιο έγινε με καλή συμμετοχή. Μετά την προγραματική μας συνάντηση, το εξαιρετικό γεύμα φιλοξένησε ο Nick και Linda Mallios, ο Ed και ο Thana Ward και η Vee Mazias. Ο κ. Pananas από το Chambersburg επέστρεψε ως ομιλητής μας κατά τη συνάντηση. Παρουσίασε αρκετές πληροφορίες για τη ζωή και την εποχή του Θεόδωρου Κολοκοτρώνη. Λόγω του προγράμματος ετοιμασίας γλυκών, δεν θα μπορέσουμε να έχουμε την μηνιαία συνάντηση την πρώτη Τρίτη του Απριλίου. Έτσι, θα συναντηθούμε την πρώτη Πέμπτη του Απριλίου. Η επόμενη συνάντησή μας θα γίνει την Πέμπτη 4 Απριλίου. Η συνάντηση θα πραγματοποιηθεί στην αίθουσα κοινωνικών εκδηλώσεων και θα ξεκινήσει στις 11:00πμ. Οι οικοδεσπότες της συνάντησης θα είναι η Χριστίνα Στάμος, η Κούλα Κόκος και η Σοφία Καλδή. Θα έχουμε μερικές νεαρές κοπέλλες από την ενορία για να μιλήσουν για τις εμπειρίες τους στο Ιονικό Χωριό στην Ελλάδα. Η συμμετοχή στον Σύλλογο Ιωακείμ και Άννα είναι ανοιχτή στους Ορθόδοξους ενορίτες που είναι 55 ετών και άνω. Ωστόσο, οποιοσδήποτε ενορίτης μπορεί να παρευρεθεί στις συναντήσεις μας και να συμμετάσχει στα ταξίδια μας και στις άλλες δραστηριότητες.

ΒΙΒΛΙΟΘΗΚΗ Η Βιβλιοθήκη τής Εκκλησίας διαθέτει βιβλία γιά τήν Ορθοδοξία καί τήν Ελλάδα γιά παιδιά καί μεγάλους. Μπορείτε νά δανειστείτε βιβλία υπογράφοντας τό βιβλίο πού είναι στήν Βιβλιοθήκη. Μπορείτε νά κρατήσετε τά βιβλία γιά ορισμένο καιρό αλλά σάς παρακαλούμε νά τά επιστρέψετε γιά νά μπορούν καί άλλοι νά τα διαβάσουν. Ευχαριστούμε.

ΒΙΒΛΙΟΠΩΛΕΙΟ – ΒΙΒΛΙΑ ΚΑΙ ΔΩΡΑ

Βρισκόμαστε στην Μεγάλη Τεσσαρακοστή και το βιβλιοπωλείο θα έχει μια συλλογή παιδικών βιβλίων για το Πάσχα και το νόημά του. Θα έχουμε και πάλι μια ποικιλία Πασχαλινών κεριών. Αυτά είναι τέλεια για παιδιά, εγγόνια, αναδεξεμιούς, κλπ. Έχουμε μεγάλη ποικιλία αντικειμένων στο βιβλιοπωλείο. Παρέχουμε εικόνες, θυμιατά, κάρβουνο και θυμίαμα για οικιακή σας χρήση. Όλα τα έσοδα από το βιβλιοπωλείο είτε πηγαίνουν απευθείας στο βιβλιοπωλείο είτε στην ενορία. Έχουμε μια επιλογή από CD που ο πατέρας Μιχαήλ πήρε κατά τη διάρκεια της Κληρικο-Λαϊκής το περασμένο καλοκαίρι. Προσθέτουμε συνεχώς νέους τίτλους βιβλίων στην εξαιρετική μας συλλογή ορθοδόξων βιβλίων για ενήλικες και παιδιά. Μπορούμε επίσης να προσφέρουμε ειδικά βιβλία, εικονίδια και άλλα αντικείμενα που κανονικά δεν είναι πάντοτε στο βιβλιοπωλείο. Επίσης, παραγγέλνουμε εικόνες και άλλα αντικείμενα από τό Μοναστήρι τής Αγίας Σκέπης όταν χρειαστεί. Έχουμε το κρασί που χρησιμοποιείται για την κοινωνία διαθέσιμο για αγορά και δωρεά στον Πατέρα Μιχαήλ για χρήση κατά τη διάρκεια της κοινωνίας. Προσθέσαμε πρόσφατα μπουκάλια ελαφρού ελαιολάδου που μπορούν να δωρηθούν στον Ιερέα για το ακοίμητο φως στην Αγία Τράπεζα. Φέρνουμε επίσης ένα ταφικό ύφασμα (Σάβανο) που ευλογήθηκε στην Ιερουσαλήμ στον τάφο του Χριστού. Αυτό μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί για κηδείες. Οι κανονικές ώρες λειτουργίας του Βιβλιοπωλείου της Αγίας Τριάδας είναι αμέσως μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία την Κυριακή και την ημέρα που ο Σύλλογος Αγ. Ιωακείμ και Άννας συναντιούνται από τις 11:00 π.μ. έως τις 1:00 μ.μ. ΓΚΡΟΥΠ ΓΙΑ ΜΗΤΕΡΕΣ Ο στόχος της ομάδας αυτής είναι να ενθαρρύνει τον πνευματικό διάλογο μεταξύ των μητέρων στην κοινότητά μας όσον αφορά την ανατροφή των παιδιών μας σε ορθόδοξο χριστιανικό σπίτι. Μπορούμε όλοι να αναφέρουμε πολλές προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζουμε καθώς τα παιδιά μας μεγαλώνουν από μικρά και από το νηπιαγωγείο μέχρι το λύκειο. Τα θέματα επικεντρώνονται στο πώς η Ορθόδοξη ζωή γίνεται μια πρακτική και ζωντανή εμπειρία στην καθημερινότητά μας. Ο πατήρ Μιχαήλ καθοδηγεί την σύναξη. Η συνάντηση γίνεται στη Βιβλιοθήκη κάθε μήνα. ADVERTISING IN THE SOURCE In an effort to contain printing costs for monthly newsletters, many churches have turned to paid

advertisements in their publications. Parish Council has agreed to adopt this funding source for our monthly publication. Doing this would help lessen and possibly erase the expense of publishing the Source.

We now have availability for two pages of paid ads in our monthly Source. The ad price will represent a year of advertising or 11 issues as we combine the June and July Source into one issue. Ads are sold by the block. There will be room for 24 ads or blocks per page. You may purchase more than one block for increased space and presentation. The cost of one ad block is $125 per year, and subsequent blocks would be an additional $100 per block. For example, a business card ad would equal two blocks and would cost $225. Camera-ready ads are appreciated but not required.

Please help us promote this program. If you own or work for a business that may be interested in advertising in our Source which is sent out to over 600 families, please contact Mary in the church office. If you know of a business that may be a potential advertiser, please pass on a contact and phone number. Examples of businesses that may be interested in advertising could be Greek bands, importers, baptismal supplies/clothing stores, and jewelers specializing in crosses. Other possibilities could be lawyers, accountants, real estate agents, etc. The only ads we cannot accept are ones pertaining to credit cards, travel, or insurance.
