THE MATCHUP

Following a grind-it-out 13-11 victory over the Denver Outlaws in Annapolis last Saturday night, the Chesapeake Bayhawks clinched home field advantage for the postseason for the first time since 2013. That serves as good news for Bayhawks fans, as 2013 was the last time Chesapeake hoisted up the Steinfeld Trophy for its fifth MLL title – the most out of any team in the league. This week’s final regular season test comes in the form of an away game against the 2015 MLL champions. The New York Lizards (7-6) currently hold a three-way tie for the final two postseason spots and will need a home victory against Chesapeake to punch their ticket into the dance. Currently on the outside looking in, the Lizards sit at the fifth spot in the league’s rankings behind Denver and the surging Atlanta Blaze. The Charlotte Hounds (7-7) are also not out of the running for a playoff berth, but will need lots of help from around the league to squeeze into one of those final two playoff spots. Last week, the Bayhawks welcomed the Outlaws in a pivotal matchup at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Bayhawks jumped out to a fast start and remained in control for three quarters of the contest, stretching their lead out to 11-3 at one point. Still, the Outlaws remained undeterred and were determined to launch a comeback attempt in the hopes of bringing the semifinals to Mile High Stadium. The Outlaws used an 8-2 outburst in the final frame to climb back, but Chesapeake stood tall to the task and stifled their comeback attempt in the dying embers of the game. “We’ve played like this in every game, except for the last two,” head coach and general manager Dave Cottle said postgame. “Tonight, we were flying around defensively, and we were tough. And we played unselfishly on offense. It was a terrible time to play two games [in three days], and it was a good time to play two games. We had a real sense of urgency.” The Lizards found themselves in another must-win contest away at the league-leading Dallas Rattlers. A back-and-forth affair saw the Lizards come out on top as they handed the Rattlers just their third loss of the year, winning 13-12. This will be the second meeting between the Lizards and Bayhawks, having won the previous matchup 16-13 at home on Saturday, July 7th. With fully reloaded rosters, this game promises to be a matchup for the ages. If the Lizards win, the Bayhawks will match their 9-5 record they finished within 2013 – a good omen for the title-hungry Chesapeake faithful. The road to a record-sixth MLL championship starts on August 11th at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, and New York could very well end up being the opposition. Watch the Bayhawks play away at James M. Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, NY against the New York Lizards on Saturday night at 7:00pm EST as the Bayhawks look to finish the regular season with another victory propelling them into their first round home MLL playoff matchup on August 11th. Games will be replayed on NBC Sports Washington on August 4th at 11:00pm EST, August 5th at 12:00pm EST, and August 6th at 12:00pm EST.

HEADLINE: Chesapeake finding success behind the 2-point arc this season

If you don’t shoot, you won’t score. That’s been the mindset from some of the long-range shooting midfielders for the Chesapeake Bayhawks this season. The second-placed Bayhawks lead the league in 2-pointers made this year with 11 total through 13 games. Midfielder Ryan Tucker and defenseman Matt Reese both lead the way for the team, having scored three impressive 2-pointers apiece this season. Most recently, Tucker showed his heat from distance with a 2-pointer coming out of the substitution box against the Denver Outlaws in last weekend’s 13-11 victory. Rounding out the 2-pointer club for Chesapeake with one 2-point goal each is midfielders Colin Heacock, Myles Jones, Ian Mackay as well as long stick midfielders C.J. Costabile and Sean Mayle. With such a solid group of long distance snipers, Chesapeake will be able to stretch leads out to larger margins as well as spark a quick comeback if need during the final week of the MLL season going into the playoffs. The fourth-placed Atlanta Blaze are second in the league in 2-point goals made with nine, while both the Charlotte Hounds and Boston Cannons have scored eight such goals. The Outlaws have given up the most 2-point goals this season with 13 flying past their defense. The 2-point arc extends 16 yards beyond each goal in Major League Lacrosse, a rule that is unique to professional field lacrosse. Shooters must have both feet behind the marked arc before shooting the ball for the goal to count for two points. Chesapeake is known for having some of the sport’s premier 2-point shot makers. During the Bayhawks 2013 MLL title-winning season run, midfielders Kyle Dixon and Ben Hunt both became known for their ability to score from anywhere on the field. Dixon

4 launched four 2-point goals that season, while Hunt notched three of his own to go with former Johns Hopkins midfielder Michael Kimmel’s four. In 2010, Dixon became known for his sidearm rifles. The former Virginia Cavalier scored an unheard of 11 total 2-point goals in a single season, pushing Chesapeake’s total for that year to a mind-boggling 18. With so many threats from the outside, Chesapeake can look to score easier inside shots with great finishers on the team like Lyle Thompson, Steele Stanwick and Josh Byrne. The balanced inside and out offense could go a long way for a Chesapeake team looking for more championship glory.
