April 2014 Once again, March was a very active month for the club. Not only with our friends from the North visiting, but we had many events as well. We had our 2nd annual Tribute to Rod Stewart, Lobster Night, St. Patrick’s Day (with a terrific assortment of Irish songs) and many other group dining activities. We had our annual visit from our Olympic Development Soccer group boys and girls, and the IMG National Baseball Classic Opening Dinner. Despite some “iffy” weather in March, we still maintained a very active golf calendar this month. I would like to thank all of our members and guests for their patience with our greens this winter. Needless to say, I am not particularly pleased with this situation. We will be working extremely hard on improving and preparing the greens for a much better fall and winter season. I would like to announce the addition of Jennifer Wilson to our staff. Jennifer has replaced Laura Yering as our Membership and Marketing Coordinator. Jennifer is a University of Florida Gator, and is originally from Cocoa Beach. Please take the time to stop in and say hello. For some of you who are making plans to head out for the summer, don’t forget to stop by and verify your change of address for the summer. It is greatly appreciated and helps us with billing and summer communication. Don’t forget to make your dining reservation for our Easter Brunch. The chef has put together a wonderful menu for this occasion. We will be introducing a few new menu items to our lunch and dinner programs. Let’s enjoy the month of April and some wonderful golf weather. I would like to wrap up my portion of the newsletter by saying thanks to all of our members for their continued support and thanks to our seasonal members who have made IMG Academy Golf Club their winter home. Thanks, Jeffrey Parsons Jeffrey Parsons, General Manager

February and March were busy months for your Men's Golf Association. February opened with the Annual 3-Day Match Play Member - Member Event. Unfortunately MGA Member participation this year was disappointing. Particularly from our Gold Tee membership segment. Only two players from this group entered. We could not field a Gold Tee Flight. Thankfully, the two participants, Bill Ferguson and Steve Baker accomodated us and moved to the Combo Tee Flight. The MGA appreciates their moving. The three days of play included many spirited matches. Several matches took more than 18 Holes to determine a winner. Championship and Consolation Flight Winners are as follows:

February concluded with your MGA teaming with Brian Coleman and his Golf Supports Our Troops foundation in hosting the Help Us Build A Heroes Green Event. Fifty-one MGA Members and Guests competed in an exciting 2BB Format. The day started with a complimentary luncheon and ended after dinner with entertaiment from the Golf Comic, P. J. Mulrooney. The MGA thanks General Manager Jeff Parsons for his generosity in providing both the luncheon and entertainment. As always, Rob Robertson and Donna Cripe and their respective staff helped make this an outstanding day and event. Approximately $1,000.00 was raised to Help Us Build A Heroes Green foundation. On the course some of those taking home a prize were Close - to - the - Pin Winners: Charlie Spragg on # 3 --- Rick Rogers on # 8 --- Mark Terpin on # 11 ----Bruce Smith on # 17.

March opened with MGA Member Jim Halstead hitting a Hole-in-One on #11 on Thursday, March 13th. Jim is the 4th MGA Member to hit a Hole-in-One since we started the Hole In One Club on October 30th. Remarkably none of the 4 players were members of the Hole In One Club at the time of their great shot. We did not have a Super Wednesday Event in March due to the Club sponsored Club Championship. Your MGA was well represented in this 3-day event. Results are as follows:

As this MGA Season concludes we are asking the membership for input on how your MGA can better serve you. Such as type of events and menu options. We are also asking our Gold Tee Membership what needs to be done to get more participation. What can we do to accomodate you? Please share your thoughts / observations with any MGA Board Member.

Jack Graham, MGA Board Member

Well,we have made it through another very busy season here at the club between IMG events, Weddings, Special club functions and regular dining.

We managed to fit everything into our dining area, it took some major splitting of the rooms with pipe and drape as some of you noticed. We had some great events that were attended by members and outside guests as well. Our wine pairing events took off with great success and were well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Due to scheduling problems we weren’t able to have one in March if time will allow we might squeeze one in for April. It’s with great sadness that we lost a few of our long time members this season. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families and friends. We would like to say get well soon to those that are going through some long illnesses that has kept them away from dining with us this season. We will be doing some major re-construction this summer to allow us to accommodate some larger groups in our boardroom. With that said our offices will under taking some much needed facelifts. Some of our offices will be moved around a bit so please bare with us as we make this transition. Just a little reminder that as you may have noticed this season our Wednesday and Fridays nights fill up fast, so it’s always a good idea to call early for your reservation. The phone number to call for that is 941-758-1467. Please disregard any old numbers you might have on hand for reservations. We have been having a few issues with our phone service with the other numbers so please only call that number. Also if our dining room is full you’re always welcome to sit at the bar or the high tops and have dinner. To our members that will be leaving us for the summer to be with their northern family and friends, please have a safe trip home and we look forward to seeing you again in the fall.

Women’s 18’er Golf Association The 2013-14 Ladies’ 18 Hole League was supposed to end as it began in November, with a step aside scramble followed by a scrumptious lunch. Unfortunately, MOM Nature pitched another of her Tuesday hissy fits, resulting in the cancellation of the scramble. We hope she’s in a way better mood next season, 014-15. The winners of the day are a variety of games: 5 Crowns, Sequence, Mexican Train, and Banagrams enthusiastically played by the would-be players . Fortunately nothing interferes with the scrumptious luncheons Sue Thevenin and Sheila Ford plan. We devoured spinach quiche, fresh fruit, and lemon sorbet with a sugar cookie after our hard work playing games. Once again our proshop and dining room staff treated like special ladies. We appreciate them enormously. We miss Megan but are grateful for Ryan. Our closing luncheon always featured season ending awards. In addition to the winners of the 4 major tournaments, awards in the special categories are announced. The participants in Ringers, ChipIns, and Birdies were recognized for their participation throughout the season. Our Weekly Winners Tournament is held every non-major week. Rather than announce one winner, the ladies who showed the greatest combination of dedication and endurance were applauded. The Most Improved Player this year is the very deserving Trish Glasser. Trish is thrilled and delighted with her improvement. Our final general league meeting approved the Board officers for next year. They will be President/Vice President Sue Thevenin and Sheila Ford; Treasurer Nancy Coleman; Secretary Sue Treash; Tournaments Marilyn Dale and Pat Moynihan. The League encourages all lady IMG members to join us Tuesday mornings. We will begin our formal events in November, when all the (snow) birds come home to roost. Special thanks to Sue Thevenin and Sheila Ford for their continuing enthusiasm and commitment to the league. Happy summer and good health to all!

EVENTSShawn Sheridan, Superintendent April is the beginning of transition back to our base bermudagrass in all the overseeded areas (collars, approaches, tees and fairways). The best way to transition back and preserve the health of the bermudagrass is to chemically remove the overseed. These applications have already been made in all areas except the fairways. Once applied, the overseed will die within 14 days. This timeframe is dependent on air and soil temperature as well as moisture so it could work faster or slower and the timeframe can vary but up to one week. I realize most of the talk over the past several months has been the greens. As I stated early in the season we encountered a disease in early fall that damaged portions of greens. Over the past several months, I have been analyzing all the affected greens and developing strategies to avoid what occurred last fall. The following is a list of areas that will be focused on over the next several months:

Increased application of calcium to combat sodium issues.Increased aerifications (3 this year) to remove organic matter.Inspection of all greens drainage outfalls.Increased fungicide applications using different chemistries.Reduction in shade on select green surrounds.Sodding of areas that will take too long to grow in.Frequent inspection of irrigation system around greens

4 One might think that what has occurred on the greens relates to ONE thing when in fact it is a combination of several factors. I wish I could go out there and treat with a “silver bullet” and cure all the problems at once….but that is not the case. I want to get to the root of the problem and often times it is more than one item that needs to be adjusted. More often it is because each green has specific “issues” due to its location. It frustrates all Superintendents when players try to compare what is going on at other courses and relate them to what is going on their home courses. The variables are enormous and it really is comparing apples to oranges. Thank you for your patience and cooperation over the past several months and rest assured that I am diligently researching, developing different maintenance strategies and most importantly working towards providing the best conditioned golf course in Manatee County.Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to meet in person to discuss anything further.

Well it’s that time of the year where season is coming to a close. We’ve had our ups and downs this year, but we want to end on a

high note. So here is a quick swing tip to tune up before you start your summer season.

Short-game consistency comes from practicing like you play. Learn to simulate real situations and play shots in sequence. Take one ball to your short-game practice area, and try to get it up and down from as many places as you can. Hit shots to different targets from different lies, and then go through your putting routine each time. Drop the ball and don't improve your lie. This will help simulate on course conditions.

Now with that useful tip helping you play better, we want you out on the course looking better. So to show our

appreciation, we will be having an end of season merchandise sale in the golf shop. It will start on Wednesday April 16th, and

everything from balls, to sunglasses will be on sale. Stop by the golf shop and receive a flyer with info on sale items. Hope to see you there!!!!!
