President’s Message

I would like to say what an honor it is to serve as your President of GOWA this year. This organization is such an important part of what we do as pumpers, installers and portable sanitation operators. It is our voice for issues that affect what we do on a daily basis. Please know that GOWA and I, as your President, are here to assist you however we can. GOWA is also a tremendous source of education for our industry. We began offering continuing education seminars around the state to help our members, and others involved in our industry, meet the state requirements for recertification to retain their licenses. This has been a huge success. The reason we were able to provide this valuable service to our members was because of the dedicated members who gave a great deal of their time, energy and money to provide these seminars. I would like to the following for their support and dedication: Chris Kumnick, DPH Virgil Fancher, DPH John Ford, Infiltrator, Steve Brown, PTI; Ashley Widener, GOWA Donnie Bradshaw, Phil Freshley, Kevin, Smith, Doug Cabe, and Richard Joslyn: Soil Scientists Ga Dept. of Public Safety All the District Environmentalists Yancey Bros. Co. for sponsoring the meals and coffee breaks On the subject of education, I would like to remind everyone that our Annual Conference is August 26-27 this year. The conference will be held in Savannah this year and I hope you will attend. The educational programs will be very useful to you in your daily business. The opportunity for learning isn’t limited to the classroom. You can often learn as much from talking to other contractors and business owners as you can from formal presentations, and the chance to network with others in the field in invaluable. If you have never attended a GOWA conference, you really don’t know what a great time you are missing! I would also like to thank our wonderful advertisers in this newsletter. They make this newsletter possible. Their advertising dollars help offset the cost of printing and mailing this newsletter, which can be quite expensive, and we greatly appreciate them. Be sure to thank them when you see them. We try to support those suppliers who support our industry and association.

Please remember, GOWA is here for you. If there is anything you think we can do to help you or our other members, please let us know. And also, make sure you use the GOWA logo on your trucks, advertising, stationery, etc. This lets people know you are a member of a professional organization dedicated to improving the onsite wastewater industry. Lastly, please remember to keep your GOWA membership current. Without GOWA, we don’t know where our industry would be. GOWA represents us at the Capitol so that we can let our legislators know how the laws they make affect us. We work with the state on rules and regulations to insure they are reasonable and workable. Without your support, GOWA cannot work to effectively represent us. In closing, let me say that we really appreciate your membership in GOWA and look forward to a great year and an awesome conference. In your service, Susan Taylor

By Georgia Department of Public Health

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) continued their long-term partnership with GOWA to help provide quality classes for installers, pumpers, soil classifiers and inspectors needing continuing education hours for their certification renewal.

Classes started in August of 2015 and continued through March of 2016. DPH staff, GOWA representatives and other instructors travelled to 20 locations throughout Georgia in order to help minimize the travel and loss of business costs for all participants.

The class focused primarily on DPH rules and regulations, industry updates, soil science training and motor carrier compliance. In addition to all of the content, the schedule and breaks also allowed plenty of time for questions, answers and conversations. Installer Sammy Castellano, of G & J Septic, said, “The best part was that I had a chance to talk to state staff, inspectors and industry folks about the questions I have and the issues I run into while in the field. It’s not something you can get when you take an

online class. It was money and time well spent.”

Virgil Fancher, State Environmental Health Office, Land Use Program Consultant has been helping to plan and organize continuing education classes for over a decade. He recently told GOWA representatives “I’m excited about the great partnership we have with GOWA. I feel like this course is the best one out there and I’m pleased that attendance continues to increase every year.”

The Department of Public Health would like to thank the following people who made the classes possible:

Ashley Widener and GOWA’s Past President, John Ford with Infiltrator for helping to plan and facilitate all of the classes.

Donnie Bradshaw, Phil Freshley, Kevin Smith, Doug Cabe, and Richard Joslyn for sharing their soil science exper tise and advice.

The many officers from the GA Department of Public Safety, Motor Carrier Compliance Division who spoke about ensuring compliance to state commercial vehicles laws.

Steve Brown from PTI, Inc. for ar r iving ear ly and staying late each time helping with the classes.

All the District Environmentalist who gave so much support and assistance!

And especially Yancey Brothers Co. Caterpillar for suppling the meals and hosting several of the meeting rooms.

John Ford, GOWA’s Past President and Infiltrator Representative, speaks to a crowd of almost 100 at one of 2 classes offered in Macon, GA.

A Great Partnership Continues

by Roy Brorkhart For at least 20 years, we’ve been told that the backhoe loader is on its way out. Those predicting its demise have argued that the backhoe is not valuable, and that it’s replaceable by newer machines. If that were true, why has the backhoe loader continued to earn a spot in operators’ fleets? Granted, the mini hydraulic excavator has proven a top contender for the same spot, but it’s not always a matter of which is superior to the other—it’s quite the opposite, actually. People are comparing the benefits of mini hydraulic excavators and backhoe loaders side by side to figure out which is better for their individual equipment requirements. It’s unrealistic to replace one with the other because both have strong benefits in certain situations. Our product experts have come up with an easy guide on how to determine whether a mini hydraulic excavator or a backhoe loader best fits your business needs. Which One Makes More Sense?

Mini hydraulic excavators and backhoe loaders both have strengths and weaknesses—the key is to ask the right questions and figure out which is better for your specific situation. Versatility, mobility and transportability are the top three areas in which the backhoe loader and mini hydraulic excavator differ. Below are some questions to consider: Which machine will be more appropriate for my application? Backhoe loaders can perform not only trenching, lifting, excavating and loading jobs, but it can also travel at higher speeds in a wide variety of applications including snow removal. Mini hydraulic excavators are compact and lightweight to minimize track marks and top ground damage. They’re also capable of a 360-degree swing. How large is my jobsite? Backhoe loaders can travel easily across a jobsite to complete more than one task, and a extended line of work tools improves versatility. Mini hydraulic excavators can fit through small gates and around crowded sites to complete jobs in tight spaces, like occupied parking lots and indoor projects.

How far apart are my jobsites? Backhoe loaders can drive 25 mph on road surfaces between worksites. Mini hydraulic excavators can be transported by trailer or utility truck from one jobsite to another for easy transfer.

Sometimes we can gather insights on what to expect for upcoming projects from different types of customers. For example, home owners are likely to need septic system repairs in a small area, so you’ll need a smaller machine that can maneuver in tight spaces and won’t make much mess. However, a bigger, faster machine would be required to repair a sewer system for a large high school building. It’s easy to get caught up in which machine is superior, but the fact of the matter is that neither is better than the other. It just depends on what you’re doing, where you’re doing it and how much space you have. You can contact your local Cat dealer for help in choosing the right equipment.

is a Better Fit
