PATRIOTISM ALIVE AND WELL AMONG THE YOUTH OF AMERICA

    .

    Good afternoon brethren,

On Saturday, March 21st I was invited to Mt Diablo High School JROTC 15th Annual Military Ball.

There on behalf of the Oakland Scottish Rite I was privileged to represent our Valley and present

Cadet Brian Campos with our JROTC medal, certificate and a scholarship towards his trip back to

D-Day in Normandy and sight see the beaches, cemetery, and other land marks. The event itself

was held at the Hyatt in Walnut Creek, everything was very formal. I was fortunate enough to be

seated with the two military heads that run the program, SGM Steve Bratton and Lt. Colonel

Christian Taddeo and their principal as well as the two other presenters. Even another brother of

ours was in attendance representing National Sojourners. Let us just say that by the end of the

event that the table was very interested in Free Masonry as a whole, its different appendant

bodies and our rich history. The event was well organized, doors opened at 6pm, followed by a 3

course meal that let straight into the ceremony. It was a beautiful event that when you walked in

to the left was all tables of the students, to the right was the parents, guests and presenters and

the head two tables that were in front were for the Dias Officers. We were the fourth up on

presenting and cadet Lt. 1C Brian Campos received the coveted Medal from the Scottish Rite and

Certificate, I reiterated some of the tenants of Freemasonry at that point on leadership that it all

starts with becoming good men better and it starts with themselves at home, focusing on

education and respecting one another. At that point Lt. Colonel C. Taddeo, (pictured below) and

the Principal both really appreciated the overall message and thanked us as an organization for

supporting. Just to let the brethren of the Valley know that we currently support 8 JROTC

programs in our Scottish Rite Valley. Thank you brethren for your continued support.

    Efren Prado, 32°, Membership Chairman

The Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) is the High School version of the Reserve

Officers Training Corps (ROTC) which are found on college campuses. Commencing in 1998, the

Supreme Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Southern Jurisdiction

initiated a program of recognition for outstanding Junior ROTC students. This initiative recognizes

high school youth enrolled in the JROTC unit for their scholastic excellence and patriotic

Americanism efforts. The award consists of a medal, ribbon and certificate suitable for framing.

    Valley Membership Achievement Project

    Good afternoon Brethren,

These past few months have been pretty busy as we have tried to clear up our books. I am glad to say that we

now have cleaned the rolls of the Valley of Oakland for dues. Please be advised if you have not paid dues in over 3

years to contact the General Secretaries office. With a huge success at the spring conferral of Degrees I am

pleased to announce an additional 5 new Scottish Rite Masons, congratulations brothers on your new found

journey into the philosophical degrees in masonry. As VMAP goes into effect, Valley Membership Achievement

Project; we will be doing little extras to boost our image and will encompass a lot of different items and resources

for the Valley to use. Thank you to the VMAP committee & Venerable Master for implementing those

recommendations set forth by Supreme Council and enhancing the Degree experience. Also to Alessandro

Gagliardi, 32°, thank you for meeting with our new brothers prior and doing the extra preparation to explain what

they are to expect and to implement the “Legacy Questions” in the 5° as how it was required by the old statues

from the late 1880 all the way up to 1930s. To our new Scottish Rite Brothers, take the time to go over those 4°-

14° up in our library and contact our Librarian curator, Paul Adams 32° at the Scottish Rite for a one on one

discussion or attend the Sublime Masters Guild that go into depth & detail of our philosophical degrees, see the

bulletin for details that was included in your packet. Brethren please note we have the Master Craftsmen

programs at the Supreme Council website but those needed assistance can come into the office for help in

enrolling. We will be rolling into the next phase of the VMAP program and will be starting to assemble those

Ambassadors representing their respective lodges and start coordinating upcoming events. Also, as a Valley have

participated in JROTC/ROTC program and thus far we have participated in 9 schools, two being at UC Berkeley as

well as other High Schools in the area and in the valley, special thanks to Bro. Paul Jevert, 32°, for representing our

Valley of Oakland in the Stockton area. We will be hosting a Supreme Council event on June 10th, please come and

attend as we will have Ill. Arturo De Hoyos, 33°, Grand Archivist & Grand Historian and Ill. Dean Alban, 33° from

Membership Services answering questions on VMAP & Tough Mudder. Brethren please be aware that our website

is down for remodeling and will be up shortly. Thank you all for your continued support.

    Sincerely and fraternally yours,

    Tough Mudder Initiative 2015

    Lake Tahoe – June 13th

The Scottish Rite Tough Mudder Program is designed to increase membership and improve

retention in Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite. This program brings Team members together to create a team-building experience and camaraderie, with Team members leaving the

event with a renewed commitment to Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite. In addition, the program creates positive public awareness about Freemasonry and the Scottish Rite.

Furthermore, the program is a positive avenue for the Scottish Rite to publically support our Wounded Warriors.

Tough Mudder is an extreme endurance event that pits participants against a 10-12 mile long obstacle course designed by former British Special Forces operators to test strength of mind

    as well as body.

    Dear Ms. Pam Norton,

I am writing this note regarding my two daughters Jayel, age 7, and Anaya, age 8. They were accepted into your

program back in August of 2014. At the time I applied for the Oakland Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center’s

programs, I was having such a hard time trying to teach two children in the 2nd and 3rd grades how to read

essential words that are the key to being able to do any homework assignment in school or being able to function

    in life.

They have been part of your program now for the past 9 months, beginning with Interactive Metronome with Nan

Busse, and continuing with the Fast ForWord reading programs with Negin Ghazizadeh and Pam Norton, and I can

see so much progress. I am very proud of the huge accomplishments that my girls have achieved as being part of

    your incredible programs.

When a parent and the teachers of two children, one with a major learning problem such as dyslexia, and another

with developmental delays, see them progressing, this is a true breakthrough. However, when my children came

to me the other day and said, “Mommy I can read chapter books in class now all by myself,” it is absolutely

heartwarming to be able to give my girls great big hugs and tell them how proud I am of them.

When they started this program, I was frustrated and running out of options of where to turn to for their trouble

with reading. A teacher told me about the program and pushed me to apply. It was the best decision I ever made

for the girls’ future. I cannot express how absolutely grateful our family is to be able to work with the fantastic

people and the generous free services that have been provided to help my girls achieve success.

    Sincerely,

    Tiffany Plummer

    From the Director of Ritual

    Brethren,

First, a hearty welcome to our newest Scottish Rite Masons who

received the Secret Master thru Perfect Elu degrees in May. Next, a

fraternal thank you to all of the sideliners who showed up to support

these new Brothers. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all who played a

part in the presentation of the degrees. The stage crew did a bang-up

job. The players were spot on. Our organist hit all of his cues and

the Class Guides communicated the degrees with their usual flair.

Being a part of the Ritual Crew is an exciting and valuable way for

any Brother to engage with his fellows and make a meaningful

contribution in our Valley. Experience is not nearly as important as

willingness when it comes to finding a place on our Team so if

you’re looking for a way to be of service, let me know!

Please plan to join us on Monday, June 22 for the Knight of the East,

of the Sword or of the Eagle thru Knight Rose Croix degrees. We’ll

begin in the library at 7:00pm and finish up with dinner afterward.

Bro. Cal Gilbert, 32° - Director of Ritual
