Some of the things on the horizon include the Jamboree by the Sea on Saturday, April 6th

being set up by Ted Mihok. This will take place in the park area between the Oak Harbor Marina and the Yacht Club. The event is scheduled from 10 AM to 4 PM and I’m sure Ted could use the help of members willing to donate time and effort. The large tent will be erected on Friday afternoon, April 5th. Also on the 6th will be the annual Oak Harbor Marina Swap Meet led by Past Commander Mark Casteel. Bring your stuff and set up a booth, browse the various offerings and take home some prize booty. The swap meet starts at 8 AM on the 6th

and runs until everyone tires out in the afternoon. Mary and I have a number of things that we didn’t need from the new boat so please, for my sake, come take it off my hands!!!Also, at 1PM during the Jamboree our newer member Jerry Liggett will be putting on a free seminar about shrimping in our local waters.Saturday, April 13, I will be again doing the “Cruising North” seminar in the upper ballroom of Oak Harbor Yacht Club. This free seminar will introduce you to cruising into British Columbia and up the inside passage to Alaska. We will talk about guide books, customs and border crossing, import restrictions, bears and some of the challenging “gates” that need to be considered when heading north. These gates include the Yuculta Rapids, Johnstone Strait, Dodd Narrows, Seymour Narrows, Cape Caution and Dixon Entrance. We will also touch upon VHF/DSC radio use, weather reports and candidate routes for heading to the cruising destinations in BC. I know you will learn something and enjoy the morning even if you are not venturing farther than Saltspring Island! The seminar starts at 8:30 AM on the 13th and will finish up around noon. No reservations needed, just show up and ask questions.It has been a great year and I want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement. I sincerely appreciate each and every one of you.

The year is coming to an end and we have made some excellent progress. The Squadron is thriving and we are adding new members each month. Our educational opportunities have been substantial and we continue to draw new interest from our local community. I would like to encourage each of you to come to the Change of Watch dinner and ceremonies on Thursday, April 11 in the upstairs ballroom of Oak Harbor Yacht Club. The prime rib dinner is $25/person and you need to RSVP back to our incoming Commander Pat Waters.

Like charting a course into the unknown, anticipating prevailing winds, reading subtle cross currents and of course cognizant of the ever - present hidden rocks, Steppe Williford, like his “Cruising North Seminars,” captained the short-handed squadron through charted anduncharted waters this past year. Like Captain Vancouver before him, his ship made port with hardly a sign of the turbulent conditions confronting his successful passage.

It is with admiration that the membership of the squadron salutes Steppe Williford on his accomplishments as commander over this past year. “Well done, Commander!

Thank you everyone for an excellent year in EDUCATION within the Squadron. It was a team effort with all hands pulling together to create an atmosphere of life-long learning.

New American Boating Course (ABC)

We canceled the March ABC course as only two students signed up in spite of our heavy advertising. Blame it on the snowy weather! We will do better next Fall.

New Boat Handling course

A course designed to teach you how to operate your boat safely and to handle situation that arise while boating. It is created to serve the needs of both the novice and experienced boater, as well as the non-boater. It teaches practical, useful, basic skills and knowledge required to confidently pilot a boat and is a replacement for the Seamanship course. Free on the water training will be offered. The course consists of six two-hour sessions:

• Rules of the Road – A Practical Approach • Confidence in Docking and Undocking – Slow Speed Maneuvering• Boating with Confidence – Handling your Boat Underway • Anchoring with Assurance – Don’t Get Carried Away • Emergencies on Board – Preparation for Handling Common Problems• Knots and Line Handling – The Knots You Need to Know

The course will start Tuesday, March 19 and run for six weeks. We have 13 students signed up for the course. Instructors are Steppe, Fred, Bob, Reg and myself. Should be fun!




New Piloting course

Tony Truog, JN will be our instructor for the Piloting class starting on Thursday, March 21. Ten classes of two hours each are scheduled for presentation of this course. Here’s the description of the Piloting class from the National website: Piloting is the first course in the sequence of USPS courses on navigation, covering the basics of coastal and inland navigation. This course focuses on navigation as it is done on recreational boats today and embraces GPS as a primary navigation tool while covering enough of traditionaltechniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if their GPS fails. The course includes many in-class exercises, developing the student’s skills through hands-on practice and learning. Ten classes of two hours each normally are scheduled for presentation of this course. In addition, the students have seven days to complete the open book exam. Topics covered include: Charts and their interpretationNavigation aids and how they point to safe waterPlotting courses and determining direction and distanceThe mariner’s compass and converting between True and MagneticUse of GPS – typical GPS displays and information they provide, setting up waypoints and routes, staying on a GPS route.We have 11 students signed up for the course which is an increase over the last time it was taught.

First Aid/CPR/AED Class This training is something we all need to do! The priority will be to train the skippers and crew volunteering for SERAT, but all squadron members have been invited to take the training. Upon completion, you will receive a CPR/AED/First Aid card from the fire dept. Classes are usually 4 hours in length, no cost, and are held at the Oak Harbor Fire Dept. (855 E. Whidbey Ave.) on a weekday during daytime so that they can adequately man their fire station with staff at the same time. The next class dates are April 19, May 15 or June 24, all from 8am to noon. Boating seminars

Cruising North

Steppe will once again conduct the very popular free Cruising North Seminar on Saturday, April 13, from 8:30am to noon. See attachment. No need to register, just come to the OHYC ballroom.

CrabbingJohn Hudson will once again present his famous free crabbing seminar in late June, right before the crabbing season begins. I will send out a flyer to all squadron members with the details soon.

ShrimpingOne of our new members, Jerry Liggett has offered to conduct a free Shrimping seminar, during the Jamboree on Saturday, April 6 at the OHYC. See attachment. No need to register, just come to the Jamboree. The seminar will be taught in the lower room of OHYC.

SERAT Training Update

The CPR / AED / First Aid Classes are:
