Viyyanna Rao was appointed as the 15 th Vice-Chancellor of ANU on 19-4-2012 by the Andhra Pradesh state government. Prof. K.V. Rao assumed charge as Vice-Chancellor on 23-04-2012 amidst jubilation and congratulations. Gracing the occasion of the new Vice-Chancellor taking charge were former Vice- Chancellors of Acharya Nagarjuna University, Prof. D. Ramakotaiah, Prof. L. Venugopal Reddy, Prof. V. Balamohandas and Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy and the MLC Sri K.S. Lakshmana Rao. Prof. K.V. Rao has been holding the responsibilities of Incharge Vice-Chancellor of ANU from 20-6-2011 to 18-4-2012 and of Krishna University from 27-7-201 to 18-4-2011. Born on March 17, 1955, Dr. Rao was a native of Ghantasala village in Krishna district. He graduated from Andhra Jaateeya Kalasala, Machilipatnam, securing second rank and completed his postgraduation from Acharya Nagarjuna University securing first rank and a Gold Medal. Dr. Rao was appointed as a lecturer in Commerce in 1979 at ANU and went on to occupy several teaching and administrative positions in a career spanning 33 years. He was promoted as Reader and then as Professor of Commerce in 1994. He was appointed as Financial Advisor to the Vice-Chancellor and served as Special Officer of Examinations during 1995-1997. Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao was appointed as the 15th Vice-Chancellor of ANU on 19-4-2012 by the AndhraPradesh state government. Prof. K.V. Rao assumed charge as Vice-Chancellor on 23-04-2012 amidst jubilationand congratulations. Gracing the occasion of the new Vice-Chancellor taking charge were former Vice-Chancellors of Acharya Nagarjuna University, Prof. D. Ramakotaiah, Prof. L. Venugopal Reddy, Prof. V.Balamohandas and Prof. Y.R. Haragopal Reddy and the MLC Sri K.S. Lakshmana Rao. Prof. K.V. Rao hasbeen holding the responsibilities of Incharge Vice-Chancellor of ANU from 20-6-2011 to 18-4-2012 and ofKrishna University from 27-7-201 to 18-4-2011.

Born on March 17, 1955, Dr. Rao was a native of Ghantasala village in Krishna district. Prof. Rao was appointed as Dean, CollegeDevelopment Council in 2003 and served as Registrarduring 2006-2008. He then assumed charge as Rectorin 2008. Prof. K.V. Rao has till date published around123 papers in various national and internationaljournals. Under his guidance 10 Ph.D. and 15 M.Phil.degrees have been awarded while about 15 researchscholars are working under his guidance currently.Prof. Rao has presented papers in national andinternational seminars / conferences and visitedFrance, Korea, Thailand, USA and the Panamacountries. He is known for his pioneering research inthe field of Public Sector Management and EducationalAdministration.

Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao is an astute administratorand a distinguished academic. He has initiated severalmeasures to improve and streamline the universityadministration. He received the Best Teacher Awardfor the year 2009 for the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh.

FELICITATIONS TO THE NEW VICE-CHANCELLOR

Prof. Rao’s academic distinction also includesseveral other important positions such as VisitingFellow of University Grants Commission, New Delhi,UGC Nominee for the assessment of proposals ofResearch Projects etc., as well as member of theEditorial Boards of several journals of repute, andmember of several professional associations ofCommerce and Administration.

The new Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.V. Rao

announced the setting up ofa Citizen Charter for

students and promised toexpedite setting up of a PGcentre at Macherla. He also

announced that theproposal for enhancementof wages for contractual

employees, both teachingand non-teaching staff,

would be placed before thenext Executive Council

meeting. The new Vice-Chancellor made known his

intention to bring insignificant changes in

administration, especially tomake it online. He also

vowed to effect qualitativeimprovement in academics

and research in theuniversity.

VISITS ABROADProf. N. Veeraiah, Dept. of Physics, has visitedCzestochowa University of Science and Technology andInstitute of Physics, Jan Dlugous University, Poland duringMay, 6th – 18th, 2012 upon invitation for collaborativeresearch work on Non-linear properties of glasses andglass ceramic materials. His trip was sponsored byMinistry of Science and Technology, Govt. of Poland.During this period he has also visited University of Aveiro,Portugal and discussed possible joint research with thePhysics Faculty on electrical properties of glass materials.

Prof. B. Re. Victor Babu, Dept. of Statistics, visitedTennessee, USA, to attend an International Conferenceduring May 15-18, 2012.

A Major Research Project (of worth Rs. 15,41,300/-) wassanctioned to Dr.K.Kasturi (PI) and Prof. K.R.S.Sambasiva Rao (Co PI) for their proposal entitled“Prostrate specific antigen: A new diagnostic markerfor breast cancer” by the University Grants Commission,New Delhi.

Prof. P. Rajasekhar, Dept. of English, has been awardedthe Canadian Studies Faculty Enrichment AwardFellowship for the year 2012-13.

SANCTION OF CSIR PROJECT

Dr. M. Srinivasa Reddy, Assistant Professor ofPhysics, University College of Engineering and Technology,was sanctioned a Research Project entitled“Investigations of photo-induced optical effects of rareearth doped Bi2O3 based glass systems for applicationsin broadband optical amplifiers in the VIS-NIR region”worth Rs.25 lakhs funded by Council of Scientific andIndustrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, for a period of threeyears.

Prof. Y.P. Ramasubbaiah, P.G. Dept. of Legal Studies,was appointed as Rector of ANU. He has been serving asDean, College Development Council till then.

Dr. K. John Babu, Department of Geology, was selectedas a member of editorial board for International Journal ofMultidisciplinary Educational Research (IJMR), a Bi-AnnualInternational Journal published from Visakhapatnam,Andhra Pradesh.

The Regional Center of Andhra Pradesh Academy ofSciences, Guntur region, situated at Acharya NagarjunaUniversity, in coordination with DST organized a Nationaltraining workshop on “Coastal Aquifer Monitoring andManagement”, for High school teachers during 19th to 24th

June, 2012 , at Bapatla College of Pharmacy, Bapatla,Guntur. Sri. M. Seshagiri Rao, President, Bapatla EducationSociety, Bapatla; Prof. P. In the valedictory session Sri K. Sai Lakshmana Rao,M.L.C. emphasized the need for conducting suchawareness programs, while Prof K. R.S. Sambasiva Rao,Convener & Secretary, APAS Regional Centre and Dr.T.E.G.K. Murthy, Jt. Convener & Principal, BCP, Bapatla, deliveredthe closing remarks on the workshop.

WORKSHOP ON RESEARCHMETHODOLOGY IN ECONOMICSThe department of Economics, ANU, conducted

one week workshop on Research Methodology inEconomics from 15.06.2012 to 21.06.2012. Prof.M.Koteswara Rao , Head of the Department, was theOrganizing Secretary. Prof. K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor, ANU,delivered the inaugural address. Prof.M.V.N.Sarma, Dean,Faculty of Social Sciences, was the chief guest andProf.V.Sambasiva Rao, Department of Mathematics wasthe guest of honour. Prof. K.Raja Babu attended theinaugural session. Prof. D.Krishna Murthy, S.V. University,Thirupati, Prof.K.Chandan, Department of Statistics, ANU,Prof.K.Surya Rao, Director, P.G.Studies, D.N.R.College,Bhimavaram, Prof.M.D.Bavaiah, Department of Economics,S.K.D. University, Prof. Ashok Kumar, Department ofEconomics, Kakatiya University, Prof.R.R.L.Kantham, ANU,Prof. B.Sambasiva Rao, Prof.P.Narasimha Rao,Prof.C.S.N.Raju and Prof.A.V.Dattatreya Rao, Principal,University Science College gave invited lectures. 45research scholars attended from various Departments ofAcharya Nagarjuna University.

ENDOWMENT LECTURE

Dr. J.S. Yadav, FNA, FTWAS, Director, Indian Instituteof Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, a reputed ChemicalEngineer, delivered the second Prof. G.J.V. JagannadhaRaju Endowment Lecture on the topic "Chemistry forHealth care" on 25th June 2012 at 2 p.m. in AcharyaNagarjuna University Campus.

Dr. Yadav, apart from stressing on the relationshipbetween chemistry and drug development, dealt with therecent research in health care, especially the new drugsfor the treatment of hypertension and diabetes.

Prof. K.V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor, presided over themeeting. Dr. Prameela Rani, Principal ANU College ofPharmacy, introduced the speaker. Prof. G. Prasad,Registrar, proposed the vote of thanks. The facultymembers, research scholars and students from the sciencedepartments and pharmacy college attended the lecture.Prof. M.V. Ram Kumar Ratnam, Coordinator, Endowmentlectures, coordinated the meeting.

ANU COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

Deployment of University Engineering CollegeStudents in Bye-Elections

One hundred and twenty four student volunteers ofUniversity Engineering College were deployed for thepurpose of taking the photographs of each and every voterwho entered the polling station on the poll day for exercisingtheir right to vote. Our district collector and Magistrate SriV.N.Vishnu congratulated the students of engineering fortheir participation. He said that the efforts of all the studentsresulted in successful completion of the bye election to twoconstituencies of Prathipadu and Macherla which drew lotof appreciation across all the sections of the society. To thisproject Mr. Charan and Mr. Krishna Kishore were theCoordinators at Prathipadu constituency whileMr.V.S.N.Swamy and Mr. A.V.Seetha Ramanjaneyulu werethe Coordinators at Macherla constituency.

Retirement FunctionUniversity College of Engineering and Technology

arranged a warm farewell to Prof. G. Prasad, Registrar I/Cand M. Naga Raju, Office Superintendent on attainingsuperannuation on June 30, 2012. In the felicitation functionstaff and students lauded the services rendered by them tothe university in different capacities. Prof. P. Siddaiah,Principal, University College of Engineering and Technology,placed on record the valuable services rendered by themand wished them a happy and healthy prosperous retiredlife.

members of Entrepreneur Development Cell (EDC) of

Institute Hyderabad; Sri D.Ramakrishna, M.D. ofEffectronics, Vijayawada; Sri M.Venu Gopal, M.D. of MitraAgencies, Vijayawada; and Sri M.V.V Satyanarayana, M.D.of Atma Lubricants, Vijayawada.

The Vice-Chancellor informed the members aboutthe establishment of EDC in the College. The members haddetailed deliberations to prepare a roadmap for the cell. Themembers felt that an add on course for one semester shouldbe introduced in the UG Curriculum. The students shouldalso undergo practical training for one semester in a reputedindustry/organization. The students should also be exposedto product specific exhibitions wherever they are held. Thecell should seek assistance from funding agencies likeAICTE, DST, etc.

The committee had also detailed interaction withstudents and exchanged views about the functioning of thecell.

PROPOSAL OF ESTABLISHMENT OFCENTRE OF EXCELLENCE ON CAMPUS

Acharya Nagarjuna University College ofEngineering and Technology is planning to establish a Centreof Excellence on University campus in ManufacturingTechnology for which it would like to have M.O.U. withSiemens Company. Mr. Bhaskar Prasad, M.D. of SiemensCompany visited University Engineering College anddiscussed the matters with the authorities. Nearly 200companies are in the net of Siemens Company. Throughthis Centre of Excellence uginox, yanex, tecno matix,teamsetter, phimade softwares will be available to thestudents of engineering to do their projects successfully.On this occasion Vice-Chancellor Prof. K.V.Rao and Prof.G.Prasad, Registrar (I/C) said that establishment of Centreof Excellence on university campus provides an opportunityto improve the technical and domain skills in engineeringstudents at global level.

NIC Camp on University CampusA National Integration Camp had been organized

by 10(A) Battalion on university campus. In this camp nearlyseventeen other state cadets participated out of a total of150 cadets. Theory classes were conducted for those cadetson how to participate in adventure activities like Rockclimbing, jumering, paracycling, boating, trekking, mountingsetc. DHC cadet J.V.Krishna Kumar, University College ofEngineering and Technology stood top second in DrillCompetition. The activities conducted on this occasion wereBlood donation, Quiz, Debate, Singing and Dancing. Theentire programme was led by Col A.S.N Rao from Gunturheadquarters. Mr. Balaji Vicharapu, A.N.O, UniversityEngineering College has been deputed as counterpart leaderon campus.

Summer Adventure CampSummer Adventure Camp selection was organized

on May 2nd at NCC group headquarters. Around hundredcadets from different colleges participated in the selectionprogramme. Out of hundred cadets, fifty cadets have been

The programme was started with the prayer ofBuddhist monk students from Myanmar. Prof. Kanthamexplained the importance of the Buddha Poornima in thecalendar. Prof. Bhaskara Murthy stated that Buddhistphilosophy had emerged as an alternative to Vedic religiousphilosophy in the ancient period.

Vijaya Ratnam, Coordinator, NSS Cell, ANU,attended a State Level Programme Coordinators’ meetingheld at Basra, Adilabad district on April 26-27, 2012.Prominent decisions include allocation of NSS Units todifferent universities, downsizing of staff pattern in the officesof NSS, conduct of State Level Youth Festival andappreciation of State Level awards distribution functions.

Training Programme for Programme Officers, NSS125th Orientation Training Programme was organized

for 29 Programme Officers of NSS Units of differentuniversities, for a period of 7 days i.e. from 23.06.2012 to29.06.2012.The programme was organised by UniversityTraining and Orientation Centre, Andhra University andEmpanelled Training Institute, Ministry of Youth Affairs andSports. The entire programme was coordinated byProf.N.Vijaya Ratnam; Dr.N.A.D.Paul, Coordinator-TOC,AU;and Dr.Haranath, Asst.Coordinator, TOC,AU.

New Coordinator appointed for NSS Cell, ANUDr.K.Sumanth Kumar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of

Zoology and Aquaculture has been appointed as new NSSCoordinator for NSS Cell, ANU. He has assumed the officeof NSS Cell on 23-6-2012 and took charge from Prof.N.VijayaRatnam, who served this office for about 6 years and 6months.

Blood donation camp and Plantation Programmesorganized

Dr.K.Sumanth Kumar, the new Coordinator of NSSCell, ANU organized a blood donation programme on 30-6-

The entireprogramme of blood donation was coordinated by Mr.S.Anasuya, Coodinator, Blood Bank, Guntur Govt. Hospital,Guntur, Dr.Jimmy Rani, University Medical Officers, Dr.Krish,Doctor, University Hospital and Programme Officers andvolunteers of NSS. The blood was donated to Blood bank ofGovt. General Hospital, Guntur, About 30 Neem saplingswere planted by the university officials and staff and researchscholars, and NSS Volunteers at the premises of NSSBhavan, ANU. expressed his sincere thanks to Sports Authority of Indiafor according permission to Acharya NagarjunaUniversity to host this Six Weeks Certificate Course.

Sports Authority of India has deputed abouttwelve coaches and four scientists to conduct thiscourse. Sixty four candidates (Athletics-20, Basketball-15, Kabaddi-21 & Kho-Kho-8) all National andInternational level players from all over the countryparticipated in this course.

NIS Six weeks certificate course - 2012

Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports,Patiala, has allotted an extension center to AcharyaNagarjuna University for the conduct of six weekscertificate course in four games i.e., Athletics,Basketball, Kabaddi & Kho-Kho at our campus from17th May to 26th June, 2012. Earlier, in South India,these courses have been conducted at Sports Authorityof India Centre, Bangalore. These courses areconducted for the first time in this university other thanthe National Institutes in India. Considering the Sportsbackground of the University and the available Sportsinfrastructure, the NSNIS, Patiala has chosen AcharyaNagarjuna University as a centre for the conduct of thecourse.
