Come join the Liberty Library Staff, training offered in all areas. Join our team and work with us as
we keep the library attractive and up-to-date.
Filing or Shelving Items: Many items are returned each week. These need to be shelved correctly
so that the next patron will be able to find them.
Circulation desk: Welcoming people into the library, and helping them find the items they are
looking for. Knowledgeable and comfortable with using the computer for searches, checking out
items, or checking in returned items.
Processing: Entering new items into the computer, and preparing them for circulation. Requires
computer knowledge and skills for entering data and printing labels. Each paperback book is also
covered with laminate to prolong there shelf life. Dustjackets are also covered, to help keep them
attractive.
Repair: Sometimes things happen and books will need a little TLC before the next patron borrows
them.
Volunteer opportunities in the Library

Mark your calendar for VCLA Event
VCLA is the volunteer organization of church librarians and library workers who are dedicated to the support and
advancement of church library ministries. If you are reading this, you are no doubt aware of the vital role our church
library plays at Liberty. We would love anyone who is interested in learning more about promoting church library
ministries to go to the web at www.vacla.org to read more. There is an upcoming spring conference to be held
May 3 & 4, 2019 at Chester Baptist Church in Chester, VA. If you are interested in attending or learning more see our
library director Joan Hite for more information. We are VERY EXCITED to announce that this year’s fall conference
will be held here at Liberty in Hampton on October 11 & 12, 2019. We are in the planning stages for this conference
and are looking for volunteers to help us with ideas and decorations. If this is your “gift” and you enjoy arts and crafts
projects, please stop by and see Joan. And of course, all are invited to attend this conference. We believe you will find
it very informative and gratifying!
Spotlight on Joan Hite
Everyone who knows or has worked with Joan Hite considers her a real “treasure”. She has
worked in our Liberty library for 27 years and now is our Director. She has done many jobs
around the church such as running the snack bar and the concession stand. She still works
behind the scenes in food service and facilities, programming the registers, processing the bills,
ordering food and preparing deposits. She has been in charge of VBS registration for 27 years
and was in charge of Awana Cubbies for 10 years. Anything you can do with a computer, she
can do! Although she’d rather not talk about herself, we want you to get to know the
indispensable, kind woman you’ll meet when you come into our marvelous library.
Joan was born in McMinnville, Tennessee over 50 years ago in a small country town that
everybody says is “300 years behind the times”. It is, in fact, the “nursery capital of the world”.
She grew up the ultimate “tomboy” and loved to fish, play football, climb trees and go camping. Joan has always loved to
read and began working in her school library in the 6th grade. Besides reading, Joan loves to organize, sew, quilt and cook.
She also loves challenges and is extremely artistic and creative.
We hope over the years you have enjoyed the beautiful and inspirational library window displays Joan has created. They
are not to be missed! She has made our library a family place where you can relax, feel comfortable reading to your kids
and get help finding a good book or movie. She believes our library, “is not a shush place!”
Often when you come into the library you will find Joan’s husband Ken working with her behind the desk. They met
through their family and have been married for 37 years. They have 6 wonderful adult kids. As Joan says there are 2 girls
and 4boys – “the girls are the bookends”. They also have 7 fantastic grandchildren they adore. All of their children grew
up in the church, often tagging along with Mom while doing their home schooling work. Joan is dedicated in all she does
and her sweet, patient spirit always shines through. Please come by soon and meet her, if you haven’t and oh yes! She’d
love to have you volunteer in the library if you are looking for a wonderful place to serve the Lord!

The Rock, The Road and the Rabbi: My Journey into the Heart
of Scriptural Faith and the Land Where It All Began by Kathie
Lee Gifford with contributions by messianic Rabbi Jason Sobel
is a book too good to miss! I would recommend it to anyone.
Although you may only know Kathie Lee from her years as a TV
talk show host and the wife of late football star Frank Gifford she
is also a devout Christian and book author. Her latest book is
really thought- provoking and added a lot to my understanding of
the Bible.
Although, like many of us, Kathie Lee has studied the scriptures
for many years, it was only recently that she began studying
biblical texts in the original Hebrew and Greek. Add to that her
trips to Israel, walking through the Holy Land and studying with
a rabbi and the result is this thought-provoking book. I learned about many Jewish traditions that we as Gentiles
aren’t familiar with that have given me a deeper insight into the true meaning of scripture. The book also includes
many interesting perspectives from the rabbi that I have never heard before. I encourage you to come into the library
and check out this excellent book. It is a quick read, but it will give you a lot to think about.

If you do, have you tried historical fiction yet? If you haven’t, you are in for a great
surprise! You get the best authors, intriguing historical background & facts and an absorbing
story all rolled into one. An example of a great historical fiction
series you can find in our library is the “Acts of Faith” series by
Davis Bunn and Janette Oke. Both
authors are award-winning and outstanding
in their own right, but writing together
they are dynamite. There are three books
in this series all set in the time period
following the crucifixion of Jesus and
continuing through the dispersion of the
apostles and followers of “The Way”.
Come in and check out The Centurion’s
Wife, The Hidden Flame and The
Damascus Way.

Tucked away just three blocks from our nation’s Capitol in Washington D.C. stands the new Museum of the Bible.
It opened in November, 2017 with the purpose of giving the greatest Book ever written its own museum. It was
funded privately. The museum provides a thorough history of the Bible and displays texts such as Dead Sea scroll
fragments dating back to the third century B.C.. It is one of the world’s most technologically advanced museums
and has something for all ages of the family. Be sure to plan a visit to the Museum this summer.
For more information go to museumofthebible.org.
Love everybody.
I’ll sort them out
