One of the girls in our ofce is pregnant with her rst child, so naturally conversations have been turning to all things baby lately, including nurseries. As were an ofce of 90% women (girl power!) theres plenty of experience and advice to be had - one little gem was to nd the nursery you want and book early as places can ll up fast. So we thought wed put our research to good use and share some of Dubais best nurseries with you. Thats not all weve been up to, this month I

rediscovered an old love at Al Sahra Equestrian Centre. With desert riding, lessons, livery and Pony Club, it reminds me of the yard I used to ride at when I was a kid. I spent endless summers there mucking out, tacking up and doing anything else just for one free lesson or hack a week. Now Im back in the saddle remembering how much tter (and crazier) I was when I was that age! The horses on the yard are happy, healthy and adored thanks to Lisa and her team. Its an amazing place to ride!Aprils weather is perfect for getting out and about, and

theres plenty to do this month. To support a cause get down to the Heritage Village event or Walk for Autism, watch the Beach Polo Cup or take part in the Dubai Desert Road Run, enjoy the Happy Mondays live at the Tennis Stadium or have a laugh with Eddie Grifn. Dont forget to check out www.mydubaiconnection.com - its packed with extra stuff, and while youre there make sure you enter our great competitions!

    Have fun!

    The Chinese have a sayi

    ng - may you

live in interesting times. Far from a

    blessing, interesting times are those

full of turmoil, compared to more

    uninteresting, less-eventful events we may

    wish for.Since the formation of

    the UAE in 1971,

when the former Trucial States - then under

British protectorate rule - gained independen

    ce,

Dubais development has been nothing short

of interesting in both positive and negative

respects. The rise of Dubai and its build and

they will come model is legendary. Commerc

    ial

towers sprang out of the ground. Before they

were even built, they had been filled by the to

    p

    multinational companies. Investors snapped u

    p

entire off-plan large scale residential commun

    ities

comprising hundreds of thousands of housing

units - within just hours of them coming ont

    o

Then came the global downturn. Dubai, that

had built its model on exposure to internation

    al

markets - took its punches. Much like the US

sub-prime market which first triggered the gl

    obal

crisis, home and personal financing in Dubai h

    ad

been far too easy to come by. Many ran into de

    bt,

left with the choice of going to jail or abscond

    ing

    - often leaving homes and possessions behind

    .

The abandoned dusty cars left at the airport

    became legendary at the time.

    Upward curve?

Today, all indicators suggest the economy is

back on the upward curve - but to what exten

    t?

A key place to look is the real estate market.

Real estate and construction services are

much higher here than anywhere else, says

Charles Neil, a Dubai-based real estate expe

    rt.

In the UK it would be less than 5% of GDP

    ,

but (in Dubai) its around 20%. Typically

the effect on the economy will be whether

the existing surplus of residential property is

absorbed. It may be that further building tak

    es

place, triggering the multiplier effect - archit

    ects,

    engineers, material providers, furnishing and

maintenance businesses - all getting in on

the action. On the other hand, c

    ommercial property is

not likely to recover for many years within

its current surplus. The regulations allowing

commercial property to be used as residentia

    l

will have to change as there will be a wide

    arbitrage between commercial rates and

residential in the next few years.

As Neil continues: The indicators (of econom

    ic

recovery) are various. We are seeing rents and

prices go up - first in the sought-after areas an

    d

for villas, but this is now trickling down and r

    ents

are starting to edge up in apartments that are

    a bit

further out of town. The other figures reflectin

    g

increased economic activity are the tourist sec

    tor.

There are more cars on the roads and the scho

    ols

all have waiting lists.Certainly, any driver a

    t the time would have

noticed the sudden decrease in traffic on Du

    bais

major roads when the crisis took hold and as

many were forced to return home. Today the

roads are once again clogged as ever during

    rush

    hour and throughout the day.

Equally, recent reports suggest a waiting list

in Dubais schools and nurseries resembling

pre-crisis days when expat families had to le

    ave

because they couldnt find school placements.

    The job market

But perhaps the biggest litmus test is within

the job market. When the crunch came, man

    y

lost their jobs. With no social security safety

    net

many more were forced to pack up and go, o

    r

simply abscond leaving their lives behind th

    em

almost overnight. According to Cliff Single,

Commercial Manager of recruitment firm B

    AC

Middle East, how is the situation now?

Over the last few years we have seen a grea

    t

deal of restructuring by Dubai-based compa

    nies

and there are increasing signs of recovery. If t

    his

continues and feeds through to other sectors

    ,

we would expect to see gradual and continue

    d

    improvement in the job market.

The situation can vary widely from compan

    y

to company - even within the same sector.

    SPECIAL feature

Speculators formed a major part of the market

    ,

with properties being bought and sold five

times or more even before theyd been built.

Prices swelled - but even then some spoke of a

    n

unsustainable bubble that was already brewin

    g

and destined to burst. As reported at the time

    was that there were

100,000 real estate firms operating in Dubai a

    t

the markets peak in 2008. In a city the size of

Dubai, 5,000 would have been more realistic.

At the same point, one third of the worlds

cranes were thought to be at work building

Dubai. An estimated 800 people per day (292

    ,000

people a year) were arriving to live and work i

    n

what became known as the city of gold. In 1

    968,

Dubais population stood at around 58,000. B

    y

1975, four years after the formation of the UA

    E,

it had grown to around 183,000 - an increase

of over 200% in just seven years. Just before th

    e

global recession hit in 2009, figures suggested

    a

population in Dubai of around 1,770,000.

DUBAI is back!As we move f

    irmly into 2013, to what

extent is Dubai making a re

    covery?

    your

    daughter has a great birth

    day!

Dear Editor, as a relative newcomer to Dubai (2 years), it was good to read your article last month on how Dubai is bouncing back from the recession. It certainly feels that way with the increase in traffic and feedback from friends with businesses in the UAE. It was a very balanced article reminding people of the follies of over-borrowing, but also predicting good times ahead for the city that we live in. No one can doubt Dubais achievements. An interesting read.

-AndyHeres to the good times ahead for Dubai

and its residents. I could live without the trafc though!

Dear Editor, I wanted to let you know that after reading your page on the importance of a well woman checkup I decided to treat my Mum to one as a Mothers Day present, as she was visiting us last month. She came away with a clean bill of health and has said what peace of mind its given her since returning home to the UK. Best regards -VictoriaThanks for your letter Victoria, its

important to have these checkups for our health and happiness.

For many years, thousands of people around the world have been duped on April Fools Day. Spurious newspaper headlines, as well as television and radio

segments, have tricked people into believing some incredible stories. From bumper spaghetti crops to burgers for lefties, many of us have believed the most improbable things over the years.

Just last April, multimillionaire Sir Richard Branson launched Journeys to the centre of the Earth through Virgin Volcanic. Only 500 people have been to space, only three people have been to the bottom of the ocean but no one has ever attempted to journey to the core of an active volcano. Until now, read the official press release. Twitter and facebook were alive with speculation until Virgin representatives, shortly after noon on 1st April, wished everyone a happy April Fools Day.

In 1981, a televised prank, also involving volcanoes, caused the programmes executive producer to be fired for failure to exercise good news judgement. Channel 7 News in Boston USA ended with a special bulletin announcing the eruption of a small hill known locally as Blue Hill. Footage of lava pouring down a hillside and audio of President Carter declaring the eruption as a serious situation lent credibility to the report. As the segment ended, the reporter held up a sign that read April Fool, however, by this time many residents had

    THIS month

already fled their homes and local authorities were flooded with frantic phone calls.

One of the earliest television pranks happened in 1957 when the respected BBC news show Panorama announced that, thanks to a mild winter, farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of farm hands pulling strands of spaghetti from trees. Many viewers called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this, the BBC diplomatically replied that they should, Place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.

On 1st April 1996, The Taco Bell Corporation used print media rather than television to play their practical joke on the nation. The US company took out a full-page ad in six major American newspapers. In the ad, Taco Bell announced that it had purchased the Liberty Bell and was renaming it The Taco Liberty Bell. Hundreds of outraged citizens called Philadelphias National Historic Park - where the bell was displayed - to express their anger. Their nerves were only calmed when Taco Bell revealed, a few hours later, that it was all a practical joke.

By also taking full-page ads in the media, Burger King cooked up a whopper of a story in 1998 to announce the latest addition to their menu - the Left-Handed Whopper. Burger King proudly stated that all the condiments were rotated 180 to suit the left-handed burger connoisseur. Lefties eagerly tried to order the burger the next day, but they had to wait in line behind right-handed folks equally caught up with making sure they got the correct Whopper.

So, were you fooled this April Fools?

Watched the dolphin and seal showThe one and only Live Dolphin and Seal

Show in the region is a 45 minute spectacular performance where you can watch the bottlenose dolphins - Senya, Ksyusha, Jerry, Tetka and Fekla and playful northern fur seals - Max, Gosha, Lusha and Fila play basketball, sing, jump, paint, juggle and even dance. Well worth a visit and an old favourite of mine is the Radisson Blu Hotel, Dubai Deira Creek. With their fantastic choice of 16 restaurants and bars, every taste is catered for! If youre in the mood for some amazing Chinese food then I can highly recommend the The China Club.

    What we ate

Take your reading glasses as the menu is extensive! The China Club specialities come highly recommended, especially the dim sum. In all honesty Im not usually a dim sum fan, but The China Club managed to convert me with the Crispy Fried Prawns, Superior Siew Mai with Crab Roe and the China Club Har Gau Crystal Shrimp Dumplings. We followed this with the Minced Beef with Coriander Soup and a simply fantastic Szechuan Hot and Sour Seafood Soup. Next was the melt in the mouth Crispy Half Peking Duck cut and served at your table. For our mains we tucked into a delish Black Pepper Beef Fillet and a superb Steamed Black Cod with Supreme Soya and Spring Onion.

    Verdict

Everything we ate was really delicious and cooked to perfection; the staff were lovely and always on hand for great recommendations. We will definitely be back!

CORONATION CHICKEN WRAPSOne of the most popular fast foods in the Arab world is the Shawarma Wrap, similar to the

Doner Kebab. It is a simple dish with cooked spicy shredded meat or chicken and a whole variety of additional ingredients such as lettuce, tomatoes, onions etc, all wrapped in warm thin pita bread. Similar food is available in virtually every country, for example Mexican tacos or burritos. The wrap is now so universal that fast food chains such as KFC, McDonalds and Subway sell them and with a veggie version.

Coronation Chicken was said to be invented by Constance Spry for the banquet of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. This dish of cold chicken in a creamy curry sauce was said to represent the Commonwealth contribution to the increasing popularity of foreign dishes by the British public. This was then updated in 2002, in honour of the Queens Golden Jubilee. This new version was quite logically renamed Jubilee Chicken. Why not try our version of the wrap below.

juice from 2 lemons2 tablespoons mango chutney (or apricot jam) pint mayonnaise3 tablespoons thick double cream3 eggs, beatenground black pepper and salt

    Directions

Heat olive oil in a saucepan; add the chopped onion, cover and saut gently for 5 minutes until the onion is soft but not brown. Stir in the curry powder and cook for another two minutes, this will help bring out the flavour. Add the stock, tomato puree, lemon juice and chutney. Stir until bubbling, cook for 5 minutes until mixture reduces and thickens. Allow to cool for half an hour or so, then stir in the mayonnaise and cream. Add the chicken and mix thoroughly. To serve, warm the tortilla, pita bread or flat bread. Divide the mixture down the length of each wrap and top with the julienne vegetables. Tightly roll each tortilla and then cut in half width ways and serve with raisins.

Wraps are great for a buffet and childrens pack lunches. Bon Apptit!

Tofu Discovered thousands of years ago in China,

tofu has gained popularity in Asian cuisine. It is also referred to as the cheese of Asia, due to the physical similarity to a block of farmers cheese. Tofu is a highly nutritious, protein-rich food that is prepared from the curds of soybean milk. Known to be rich in protein and calcium, it is often a great addition to vegan and lactose-free diets. Moreover, it is naturally free from saturated fats and rich

in omega-3 fatty acids making it a great substitute for cheese, particularly in people suffering from diabetes and heart disease. In addition, Tofu contains phytoestrogens which are natural compounds that have shown to be helpful in reducing the symptoms associated with menopause. Although some consider it bland, it does absorb the flavours of other ingredients present in the dish and also adds nutritional value.

Going minimalist - own less, live more!

  • Connector APRIL | 55

Minimalism is an art and design movement that sets out to expose the essence of a subject through eliminating all non essential

forms or features. Minimalism uses fewest possible elements to maximum effect and is evident in a lot of contemporary architecture and space design. It takes inspiration from the Japanese culture of Zen philosophy, a concept that promotes simplicity as a means of achieving freedom and a greater essence of living, by not only appreciating aesthetic value of materials and objects, but also the essence of their inner qualities.

Why have a minimalist home?R55.]-5-#,5.)5&(9 Simply put, the more

stuff you have, the more you have to keep clean. Cleaning every object and around lots of furniture is a big task, so probably doesnt get done often or thoroughly enough.

R55.]-5&--5-.,-- /&9 A minimalist home is calming as there is less clutter, and thus less visual distraction and chaos demanding our attention. Also, the burden of lots of possessions can have an oppressive effect on your sense of freedom.

R55.]-5'),5**(!9 Who doesnt swoon over interior design photos of immaculate homes? If you think about it what makes them so appealing is that theres barely anything in them apart from beautiful furniture, pieces of art and select decorations - certainly no clutter.

Minimalism can be adopted to varying degrees, from a mere design concept to a way

    n a

Minimalism uses fewest possible elements to

    maximum effect.

of life. A minimalist home doesnt have to be as bare and stark as it sounds, but is the promotion of things you value most, and the removal of those that distract from them.

What does a minimalist home look like?R55&,5-/, -5(51&%13-9 no stacks

of books or papers, knickknacks or overcrowded shelves.

R55#(#'&5 /,(#./,51#."5(.5),.#)(-95only essential pieces of furniture and a few accents like a piece of artwork on the wall and a vase of flowers on the table.

R55/.35)0,5+/(.#.39 This rule applies fundamentally as minimalism focuses on the value and function of the item and not pure aesthetics. So instead of having lots of stuff , a minimalist home would have a few select pieces that can really be appreciated.

Minimalism isnt just a design concept to those who fully embrace it, but can entail a whole way of being. Firstly, the process of purging can be an emotional one as it will force you to address the big whys attached to your belongings like why do I have a closet full of clothes I dont wear? or why cant I let go of mementos of a past relationship? Purging goes against the security that consuming and collecting brings, so get ready to question your views on society too. In a world that produces and purchases material possessions at an alarming rate, we live in a society where material possessions are used to impress, compete and prove your worth. As your mindset changes you may find yourself on the outside looking in. Your lifestyle may begin

to change as you will have more freedom being no longer tied to the past or the burden of your belongings. Youll have more time and more money as you buy less and have less to take care of, and therefore you will have less stress.

Minimalism begets minimalism, so the more you part with, the more you realise how little you really need, and the more youll want to part with. Simplifying may ultimately creep into every aspect of your life, from your time commitments and goals, to diet and wardrobe. So if youre ready to embark on this potentially life changing process, heres how to begin.

gC55%&5)(5,))'5.55.#'8 By setting an achievable goal you can use the first room you finish to inspire you to simplify the next.

iC55(.# 35."5--(.#&-85Now you know what furniture you want to keep, purge your possessions accordingly, depending on what you want to display and what will fit into the storage available. Everything else that is not essential should be donated, trashed or stored out of sight. Nothing should be stored on the floor or under tables.

jC55.),5)/.5) 5-#!".8 As mentioned previously, essentials should be stored in an organised and functional manner. For example CDs and DVDs in cabinets and drawers, papers in files or boxes, and bookshelves with books and a few select ornaments. Shelves shouldnt display a whole collection of things as this tends to look cluttered.

kC55&,51&&-8 Do not hang trinkets and odd pieces of artwork. Artwork should be select, and mirrors used wisely e.g. not reflecting a busy bookshelf. Leave some walls bare if possible.

lC5#'*&5),8 As mentioned before, one or two simple accent decorative pieces can serve as a focal point of interest in a minimalist room. If the room has subdued colours, accents can be bright like red or cobalt blue to add a splash of energy. With

larger pieces of furniture or floor coverings, patterns like checks and flowers are visual clutter. The rule of simplicity also goes for window treatments which should frame the view, not distract from it. Opt for neutral, non patterned wooden blinds or curtains- fussy and frilly equals clutter.

mC55)&)/,8 White is classic minimalist, but can be paired with any solid colour that doesnt draw too much attention such as neutrals and earth tones.

nC5#05#.'-55")'8 Having a place for everything makes sure they get put back out of sight when not in use. Items should have logical and practical homes.

oC5#.5(5'#(.85Once youve simplified your room, youll probably realise you can do more. Give it a couple of days of living in, see what else is non-essential, and where more can be stored out of sight. You might want to organise your out of sight storage frequently too. The idea is to create tranquillity by organisation, not hiding stressful clutter behind closed doors.

gfC55#.5%65,&265(5($)3< Looking around at your clutter free, tranquil room is a reward in itself. You now have time and peace of mind to focus on living rather than collecting and cleaning.

Not to be confused with Earth Hour and Spring Equinox, which both took place in March, Earth Day is observed

on 22nd April each year and aims to inspire awareness and appreciation for earths environment. Founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, it was first organised to promote ecology and respect for wildlife and nature, as well as creating awareness of the growing issues of water, air and soil pollution.

Typical ways Earth Day is observed include planting trees, beach clean-ups, picking up roadside litter and being more recycling and conservation conscious. A death in the family is devastating enough, but the anguish can be compounded with related troubles and traumas, ranging from frozen bank accounts, disputes amongst heirs, businesses having to close and uncertainties regarding real estate inheritance. Unlike common law jurisdictions, the UAE does not practice automatic right of survivorship (property passing to a surviving joint owner immediately upon death of the other). All assets within the UAE are subject to a formal succession process administered by the local courts who will oversee an estate and make a number of key decisions.

If you have spent years accumulating your wealth and managing it wisely, it is logical that you should pause and take time out to plan for the future to ensure that your savings, assets, business, and general property are passed on to your family, or to the beneficiaries of your choice, when you want, in the shares you want. It is important to understand the issues and the options that are available to you to achieve your succession goals.

Personal planningFor expatriates living in the UAE, there

is a very simple reason to make a will and put in place some succession planning. The Government of Dubais official website states that the UAE Courts will adhere to Sharia law in any situation where there is no will in place.

Put simply, this means if you die without a will i.e. intestate, the local courts will deal with your estate and distribute it in fixed shares, prescribed according to the heirship rules of Sharia law. While this may work for some, Sharia fixed share distribution may not

Planning for tomorrowand the days after

    BUSINESS & legal ADVERTORIAL

be right for many. All assets of the deceased, including joint bank accounts and other jointly owned property, will be frozen until liabilities have been audited and discharged and the heirs who are entitled to the remaining assets identified, and the extent of their share apportioned by the local courts.

Business planning If you own or co-own a business, whether

its a free zone or LLC company, a significant proportion of your wealth - and your familys source of income after your death - is probably linked to it. It is important to plan for its future, to ensure its seamless continuity and success particularly as there is no automatic transfer of shares when a death occurs.

One can opt to rely on a will, but in many cases the better approach is a more evolved approach, involving offshore succession planning solutions such as a trust. Seek the counsel of specialised lawyers who will work with you to ensure your personal assets, shares in a business and investments can be structured effectively for the long-term benefit of you and your family.

If you dont have a succession plan in place, you simply cannot predict with any certainty what will happen after your death: whether your family will be provided for, who will look after your business, and when and how your beneficiaries will actually stand to benefit. It is best to be prepared today for all that can happen tomorrow.
