Mini Show Winners

Mini Show Winners

Cheryl Townson and Sally Bullers This month's winner by Cheryl Townson was inspired by her artistic response to fabric

styles from the forties, with all their dramatic presence and flair.

And Sally Bullers contributed this elegant little potted flower in acrylics which captured our collective hearts, as well.

Congratulations to you both!

From the President

Spring is here! There is an excitement about springtime-new growth, blossoms, the warmth of the sun and a spark that whispers or shouts to us CREATE! All artists go through periods of stuckedness in our art. We need inspiration. So, how do you get your inspiration? One way for me is to play with my art. Let go of the final result and try something new. Experiment with a new technique, a new medium, a subject I have never painted. Paint for the process, not so others will like it, or buy it, but because it makes me feel daring and happy. I was reading an article from the artists network and found some inspiring quotes. "Paint what you see, but feel what you paint." Brian LaSaga. "Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can ever go

Another way to jumpstart our artistic process is to take one of the workshops that you have access to, at the discounted member prices. We heard that some of you want to sign up as soon as you hear about a great workshop, so we have decided to open up all workshops for 2018 so you and non-members can sign up right away! Check out all the workshops/ Dabblers coming up for the rest of the year. New Developments: it was requested that we make our website calendar mobile friendly, so we are now installed with a program called Tockify, which not only enables you to get a better view on your mobile device, but also looks very "classy" on our website. Check it out! We are proud to say that LAA is now a sponsor of LAD (Louisville Arts District). This will put our logo on banners around the city, and on various media sites. Member Interview Sally Bullers What starts off an artist's career? One wonders particularly about Sally Bullers, whose engineer Dad gave her a giant crayon set which even had the new sparkling gold and silver colors. Other kids had normal packages. ( When she gestures its size, it appears to have been a couple of feet long, but this is possibly the stored memory of little arms.) And Sally still creates art, as always, pretty much all the time. Classes and workshops have always attracted her. An English major who went on to a library sciences degree with an appropriate career, she never stopped doing artwork. She oversaw the LAA art library for two years, as well as volunteering for shows. Now, her

basement is given over to painting, mostly acrylics and oils. She has taught painting, and was a signature member of the Colorado Watercolor Society. Her work (see it on sallybullersartist.com) is often abstract and lushly colored. " Abstract " doesn't mean wild abandon here; she thinks a lot about the evolving work, producing value sketches and often observing a work in progress from the corner of an eye while doing other things. Turning the piece every which way often suggests a new direction that draws the eye. Locally, Janet Russell's Creative Framing Gallery has featured her work, and she currently has pieces in the Walnut Gallery, both of which have provided sales. She enjoys traveling to enticing workshops, one of which, a seaside resort in North Carolina, several times provided a week-long experience of 20 different instructors, rooms, all meals, and random walks on the beach. This wonderful experience has since ceased to exist, which should make us all unhappy. Sally's photo can be found above in the mini show section, holding her winning piece.. Just above, where artists' interview photos normally appear, is her brightly-colored abstract called "Crescendo" which was chosen as a poster to advertise a choral group, and uses purloined pieces of her mother's piano music. -mckee
