Athlete of the Month: LUKE 1. When & why did you join Forward?

We (my girlfriend, Adriana, & I) joined in August of 2013. I knew of crossfit when I was in the Army, but had never been involved in a gym. I tried to stop by another gym but they were closed at 3:30! That didn't fly! Having known Kent from college, I knew he was involved in another gym, so we came in and tried a workout. As soon as I saw Dave Steele's beard I knew this was the gym for us.

2. What has been your biggest achievement since you joined Forward? Biggest challenge?

Biggest achievement was finishing the open and biggest challenge was to get to where I was doing the Rx weight on a consistent basis. Sometimes that weight gets heavy.

3. What is your favorite lift &/or skill? Why?

I like the clean and jerk. It combines power and technique like the snatch, but I can meathead my way through the lift a little more.

4. What is your least favorite lift &/or skill? Why?

Double Unders, because they are so hit or miss, and if they are off then I go home looking like someone whipped my legs that day.

5. Describe your first experience with the CF Open.

It was awesome to be able to do all of the workouts with a group and really see what things there are to improve on. We aren't judged too closely in every class, so sometimes you can slip by with doing the lift/skill without as much precision. Once you get no-repped so many times, you definitely understand what it takes to really be competitive.

6. What are some of your fitness goals for 2014?

String together ring muscle-ups and keep on improving towards the open next year. Maybe see if I could do some competitions. And to make sure I can still do more pull-ups then Adriana at the end of the year.

7. What is your favorite thing about CFF?

Fridays at 5:30 is an 80's themed music workout. It is awesome. Also the coaches make time for you. I don't think I've ever asked a question to a coach that they have been too busy to answer or help with. We love this place.
