April Public Policy Open Forum: Overcoming Challenges to State Licensure

Call for Volunteers: Academy Collaborative for the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans

The Legislative and Public Policy Committee, in collaboration with the Council on Research, is forming an Academy Collaborative for the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, comprised of Academy experts in topics of the DGA and member leaders steeped in the Academy’s policy and research initiatives. The Collaborative’s work is assisted by and informed through stakeholder engagement with seven “Think Tanks” focused on a combination of identified topics of the 2020-2025 DGA and additional issues. Members of the Think Tanks will be experts in their field and will be required to research and offer their recommendations to the larger Collaborative. Those appointed to the Think Tanks

should anticipate about eight hours of work per month and shall meet at least twice before the end of 2019. Members may self-nominate or suggest other qualified individuals to serve on the Think Tanks. Nominations should indicate the Think Tank of interest and the nominee's resume or CV. House of Delegates Update (may be shared with members) Spring 2019 HOD Meeting

The Spring 2019 HOD Virtual Meeting was held on March 30-31, 2019. The overall topic discussed was Consumer Awareness and Changing Drivers of Food Choices. The focus on the dialogue was the relevance of sustainability to consumer food choices and the role of nutrition and dietetics practitioners in guiding these choices through

evidence-based practice and communications. These issues were explored through the areas of education and training, practice, and research. The HOD Workbooks are being shared with the Academy Foundation’s Fellow, Marie Spiker, to inform the upcoming proceedings paper Cultivating Sustainable Food Systems: A Nutrition-Focused Framework for Action and the House Leadership Team is currently developing motions. May 2019 HOD Meeting and HOD Evolution Designer Team Updates

The HOD Evolution Designers finalized their taskforce work and submitted their report with recommendations on the future HOD Structure and Business Model. The House Leadership Team accepted the final report on Friday, March 29, 2019 and during the Spring HOD Meeting, delegates were provided an overview of the report. Over the next two months delegates will participate in the next steps in the process. They have been asked to read the report, ask clarifying questions, seek member input, and participate in the HOD meeting dialogue on Monday, May 6, 2019. Following the meeting, there will be deliberations and voting on motions.

Academy Bylaws Amended

The Academy's Bylaws were amended by the House of Delegates on March 1, 2019. The amendments include revisions related to the Student and International Members Qualifications.

Student Members Qualifications The revised term limit of eight (8) years for student membership classification aligns with the Future Education Model requiring a minimum of a Master’s degree.

International Members Qualifications: This amendment helped to remove current obstacles for International membership applicants from countries by allowing the provision of other documents to verify education and/or training in food, nutrition or dietetics completed outside of the United States.

Quality Management Update (may be shared with members) How Preceptors can Use the Revised SOPP for RDNs in Education of Nutrition and Dietetics Practitioners

The Revised 2018 SOPP for RDNs in Education of Nutrition and Dietetics Practitioners is now available in print in the January 2019 edition of the Journal of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Focus Area SOPP are tools used by RDN preceptors for self-evaluation, professional development and advancement of practice. Commission on Dietetic Registration’s (CDR) has developed sample position/job descriptions for eight employment categories. Please review them to determine if hiring a DTR is right for your program: cdrnet.org/opportunities. Individuals who have successfully completed either an associate degree and an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) accredited Dietetic Technician (DT) program, or a bachelor’s degree and an ACEND accredited Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) program, are eligible to take the registration examination for dietetic technicians without meeting additional academic or supervised practice requirements. Once credentialed, these individuals are required to comply with CDR’s professional development/ recertification requirements, the Code of Ethics for the Profession of Dietetics, and the Standards of Practice. Vegetarian Nutrition DPG Research Grant Application

The Vegetarian Nutrition DPG Research Grant offers funding for innovative research relating to vegetarian nutrition to an individual who is an RDN, DTR, or dietetic student member of the Academy. Reopened – Select Foundation Award Applications

The Foundation has reopened a number of awards applications for a limited time only. Awards include a continuing education for Management in Food and Nutrition Systems members, a recognition award for student leaders in Western Pennsylvania to attend FNCE, and a continuing education award for faculty of accredited universities in Ohio. Nutrition in Food Retail Program Development Fellowship – Apply Today!

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation (Foundation) is funding a Nutrition in Food Retail Program Development (NFRPD) Fellow. This one-year opportunity will fund an RDN member of the Academy to participate full-time in the Foundation’s new program titled, “Leveraging RDNs in the Food Retail Environment to Improve Public Health.” The food retail space presents a tremendous opportunity for RDNs to improve public health by meeting consumers where they are on a regular basis and, importantly, where they are making food decisions. The NFRPD Fellow will oversee and execute phase 1 of this program, which will include:

A review and analysis of the retail environment and existing research

Creation of an advisory group of experts

The development of a model or multiple models that are financially feasible as well as scalable and meet the needs of consumers and retailers
