The exhibition explores design innovation through the lens of the automobile. Ms. Forbes will share this group of unique American and European automobiles alongside conceptual drawings, patents, and scale models. She’ll explore the visionary process of car design and highlight the influence of international automotive events such as General Motors’ Motorama and the Paris Salon de l’Automobile. You’ll learn about the pioneering masterworks of automotive leaders Ferrari, Bugatti, GM, and Porsche, among others.

The North Georgia foothills and mountains are blessed with an

abundance of spring-flowering plants and with many natural areas where we can enjoy them. In this presentation, Linda Chafin will introduce the wide diversity of Georgia’s native wildflowers and discuss their natural and cultural history. She will emphasize tips for identification, make recommendations for field guides, and provide information on the best wildflower exploration sites in North Georgia.

Linda Chafin has a Master’s degree in Botany from the University of Georgia and is the author of Field Guide to the Rare Plants

She is a founder of The Tuscan Sun Festival, an annual music, literature, and art festival in Cortona, Italy. She and her husband divide their time between North Carolina and Tuscany.

If you drive across the State of Georgia today, you will see

numerous fifty or sixty year old school buildings of the modernist period. Built similar in style with brick and masonry, glass curtain walls, and flat roofs, these structures are going to ruin in the landscape. Many of those buildings were “equalization schools” constructed for African-American students during the years just before and after Brown vs. the Board of Education, as a last-ditch effort to prove that separate but equal actually worked in Georgia. What happened to these schools? How did they function? Many African-American neighborhoods have lamented the loss of these buildings, which have served as centers for community-based cultural events throughout Georgia. We are considering how to interpret those structures today, and assess whether some of them might be rehabilitated and sustainably adapted for community use. Join Dan Nadenicek, Dean of the College of Environment and Design, on a quest to tell this important story and contemplate the future. Mary returns once again to Reynolds Plantation to teach

both beginners and experienced students the process of oil painting. Each morning of the 4-day workshop, Mary will do a painting demonstration, during which she will discuss the concepts of color mixing and composition. After each demonstration, Mary will individually assist each student in painting subjects of his/her own choosing.

Although Mary was trained as a biologist, she began oil painting

15 years ago. She now has occasional one-person shows, she participates in festivals in Florida and South Carolina, and she teaches workshops and classes throughout the Southeast. Greek and Roman marble statuary was originally richly embellished with colorful

painting, gilding, and inlay. Such polychromy gave sculptures a range of different appearances from vivid realism – that is, a virtual life-likeness – to highly stylized and artful types of coloration that were elevated and removed from everyday life. This lecture will highlight how new interdisciplinary research on the extremely fragmentary remains of ancient pigments can elucidate the importance of color in the visual language of ancient marble sculpture. Economic forecasters and most economic prognosticators tend to focus on what is likely to happen in the

economy during the next 12-18 months. Their emphasis is typically on the expected unemployment rate, the rate of inflation, interest rates or some aspect of near-term monetary policy. As a result, insufficient time is devoted to analysis and discussion of some of the fundamental underlying trends and issues that are far more important in determining the health of the economy over the course of the next 10 years. In this presentation, we will identify some of these issues and how they may impact the economy. Some of these issues may be unique to Georgia, or may be of greater importance in the state compared to the rest of the U.S.

In anticipation of the presentation, you may wish to prepare your own

list of what you believe to be the most important issues and challenges facing Georgia and the entire U.S. economy.

Why do countries seem to repeat the same foreign policy mistakes?

Throughout history governments have taken unnecessary risks and led their societies into conflicts that they should have avoided. While politicians are often blamed for such mistakes, recent research in cognitive science suggests that many foreign policy fiascos are not unique and are instead rooted in routine human decision making. Indeed, there is now compelling evidence that errors in judgment are “hard wired” and difficult to overcome. Dr. Berejikian will discuss how this research helps us better understand both why governments tend to repeat certain foreign policy mistakes and, just as important, how the public can be manipulated into supporting such policies.

Dr. Jeffrey D. Berejikian is a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Georgia, and Associate Professor at the School of Public

and International Affairs (SPIA). Dr. Berejikain’s research integrates findings from cognitive psychology and neuroscience with contemporary foreign policy and appears in the top journals in the discipline, including the American Political Science Review, Political Psychology, and the Journal of Conflict Resolution. His book, International Relations Under Risk is published by SUNY Press, and has been translated into Korean. Kristen is a graduate of the Juilliard School and the newly appointed principal flute of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera. Josh has recently completed his doctoral studies at the University of Georgia and also performs with the Chattanooga Symphony. Damon Denton is a graduate of the Peabody Institute and the Julliard School. He is on faculty with the UGA Hugh Hodgson School of Music and continues to perform worldwide.
