Saturday Briefing Page April 9, 2011 A MESSAGE FROM RICHARD R. KELLEY TO OUR OUTRIGGER ‘OHANA Outrigger Aids Our Friends in Japan By Barry Wallace e effects of the triple whammy of what Japan refers to as 3/11 (Earthquake, Tsunami, and Radiation) are still being assessed, but we know that many people in Japan will be in distress for some time to come. We, at Outrigger, want to help our friends in Japan during their time of need. To this end, we were honored to lend our support to a special benefit concert held at Waikiki Beach Walk® on the Sunday following the disaster, with 100 percent of the proceeds raised going to the Japan Hawai‘i Relief Fund, established by First Hawaiian Bank. All contributions to this fund will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society to support the earthquake and tsunami victims and their families. We also have made a corporate donation to the Japan-America Society of Hawaii (JASH), a non-profit organization whose mission is to “promote understanding and friendships between the peoples of Japan and the United States through the special and unique perspective of Hawai‘i.” JASH will direct these funds to the Japanese Red Cross Society as well. On the JASH Web site, they show their efforts to provide relief and suggest how others can contribute. Visit www.jashawaii.org, if you are interested in further information. David Carey, Jean Rolles, and Danny Ojiri on behalf of Outrigger, present a check to Ed Hawkins, President of the Japan-America Society of Hawaii Outrigger Promotes Healthy Lifestyles both at Work and at Home By Dr. Chuck Kelley Dr. Richard Kelley is traveling. His column will return next week. I am always impressed at the level of physical fitness in our company. Walking around, I see that most of our ‘ohana is trim and physically active. Many of our jobs are physically demanding, for example Housekeeping, Bell, and Maintenance, which require lots and lots of physical exertion every day. In fact, a couple of years ago, I asked the Housekeepers to wear pedometers for a week, and I found that many of them walked over five miles a day performing their duties! But not everyone has such a position; many spend the day at a desk or counter, which makes it harder to stay in shape. I am always pleased when I see employees out there exercising before work, after work, and even on their lunch breaks. Once upon a time in the United States, our home and work lives were almost completely separate. After employees clocked in and the morning factory whistle blew, they were required to place all personal issues, even health issues, on hold until the whistle blew again at the end of the day. Well, that is just not reality any more. Life has gotten far more complicated, and some good employers are helping employees incorporate healthy lifestyles into the workplace. Outrigger has been a leader in this area, making it possible for employees to practice healthy habits and disease prevention strategies all day, every day. To begin with, Outrigger provides all full-time employees with top-notch medical Continued on page 8

Wyndham Mauna Loa Village’s photo submission depicts Hawai‘i as a “melting pot”

alaka‘i – to lead, guide, direct.

We are all leaders in some manner or form. If you lead a group of employees to fulfill a

specific task or purpose, you are a leader. If you coach your kid’s soccer team after hours, you are a leader. If you are a parent of one or ten children, you are a leader. If you are involved in church or community

projects, you are a leader. Even if you don’t do any of the above, you can still be a great

leader. As leaders, we lead, guide, direct, teach by example through every word we speak and every action we perform.

local triviaIn 1819, the Brig Thaddeus departed Boston, Massachusetts, for a 164 day journey to the Hawaiian Islands. On April 4, 1820, the Thaddeus arrived in Kailua-Kona, with 22 passengers that comprised the first company of Protestant missionaries to introduce Christianity to our island people. There were two ministers within this group, Hiram Bingham, who continued on to O‘ahu in 1823, and Asa Thurston, who remained in Kailua-Kona. The history and stories of these early pioneers can be found at the Mission Houses Museum in Honolulu, and the Moku‘aikaua Church in Kailua-Kona.

The Moku‘aikaua Church in Kailua-Kona is the oldest Christian Church in the Hawaiian Islands. The first church was a wooden structure made of native Ohi‘a wood and a thatched roof.

The “Frame House,” pictured here at the Mission

Houses Museum, is the oldest wood-frame structure standing in the Hawaiian

Islands and was used as a communal home by

many missionary families who shared it with island

visitors and boarders. It was constructed in Boston and

shipped around Cape Horn to Hawai‘i in 1820.

To Manager & Staff Outrigger Twin Towns

Resort,

My wife Cheryl & I felt compelled to write

to you after our stay with you from the 1st to

the 4th of this month. All of your Staff, the

cleaners, reception, restaurants & breakfast

area were, to say the least, simply terrific.

Their courtesy & professionalism was everything it should be & more. I deal with

the public every day & I know it is hard to be polite even sometimes so your Staff

stood out as being up there with the best. Our stay was a once in 9 year event

for us & unknowingly, you made it rather special so we would like to say thank

you again & we would hope to one day stay with you all once more when ever

circumstances permit. Feel free to use this letter as a testimonial if you so wish, as

we have nothing but praise for your organisation.

Yours Most Sincerely,

Ian & Cheryl Fisk, via email
