DAVIDSON L. HEPBURN
Davidson L.Hepburn, UnitedNations Ambassador for theBahamas, received the bachelorof arts degree in literature fromFlorida A&M University in 1958
He subsequently earned themaster's degree in language andliterature from Michigan StateUniversity; the doctor of phi-losophy degree in comparativeliterature and language from the 1University of Madrid (Spain); and the honorar doctorof laws from Alma College (Michigan). He also has a postgraduate diploma in international relations from theInternational Institute, Geneva, Switzerland.
From 1964 to 1969, Dr. Hepburn was an assistant
professor of English at Alma College. In 1969, he entered
the Bahamian Civil Service and held posts in several
government ministries. In 1973, he became a member of
the Bahamian delegation to the UN and in 1978 wasappointed Bahamas' Ambassador to the UN.
In 1979 and 1982, Dr. Hepburn chaired the UN's
first and second sessions on disarmament. Currently, heis vice chairman of the Disarmament Commission. His
active and progressive UN career has catapulted him to avery favorable candidacy for president of the 38th Ses-
sion of the United Nations which begins in September of
1983.
On the pervasive world wide topic of disarmament,Dr. Hepburn has said, "I see a close relationship between
disarmament and development, between disarm-ament and economic problems, and between disarma-ment and peace.
"For me, 'disarmament' is a wrong word. I've been
trying for some time to find another word because theword does not have the strength it ought to have in orderto make people sit and listen. A problem we have at the
UN is that people become very blase' about an issue. I
think disarmament may be falling into that category."
ANDREW H. HINES, JR.
Andrew H. Hines, Jr.. isPresident of the Florida Pow-
er Corporation and IndustryChairman of the Florida A&MUniversity Cluster. He grad-
uated from Alachua County(Florida) High School in
1940, and in 1947 he earnedthe bachelor of science degreein mechanical engineeringfrom the University of
Florida.
Early in his career, Mr. Hines was involved in
research and development work for the General Electric
Corporation. The job took him away from Florida to the
industrial Northeast. Eventually, however, he returned to
Florida and now lives in St. Petersburg.
In 1977, Mr. Hines was named St. Petersburg's "Mr.
Sun." In 1978, he was named Chairman of the Landmark
Trust Bank, for which he had been director for many
years. Also in '78, President Jimmy Carter appointed Mr.
Hines chairman and organizer of the Metro Chapter of
the National Alliance of Business (NAB). NAB is the
parent organization for Cluster programs such as the one
at FAMU.
In 1981, Mr. Hines was recipient of the Great Amer-
ican Traditional Award (an honor shared with such per-
sonalities as President Harry S. Truman and John F.
Kennedy).
Mr. Hines has devoted more than 30 years of volun-
teer work to the Boy Scouts of America, the Florida
Council of 100, the United Negro College Fund, the
United Way of Pinellas County, the American Red Cross
and the All Children's Hospital.
To this day, Mr. Hines continues to rack up firsts. It
was under his administration and through his leadership
that the FAMU Cluster Program sponsored its firstSpring Convocation on March 24, 1983. It was he who
succeeded in getting Mr. George Steinbrenner, principal
owner of the New York Yankees and Chairman of the
American Ship Building Company, to be the main
speaker. In so doing, Mr. Hines led Cluster into another
activity that should prove to be mutually beneficial toparticipating companies and to Florida A&M.
