Second Sunday of Easter (Sunday of Devine Mercy)

I want to send my thanks and gratitude to everyone who was involved with the Easter celebrations this year. The liturgies were beautiful and very meaningful. A big thanks to all the ministries who spent many hours in practice and preparation for the celebrations. Specifically, I would like to thank: Jacque Neu and the lectors for their proclamation of the Word; Dennis Parks and the ushers for their assisting all of our parishioners and visitors; our Hospitality ministers who offer a friendly smile and welcome to everyone who comes into the door; thanks to the sacristans as well who made my job so very much easier! The Eucharistic ministers who charitably and gracefully gave of their time and filling-in when called. Kathleen Roehl and Tammy Winters and the Environment Committee for their beautiful decoration of our liturgical space. The cantors and choirs, as always, did a amazing job of invoking the sacred within us – thanks to Chris Wolf, Director of Music and Yvonne Merrigan – multi-talented pianist and organist. To the RCIA catechumen and candidates (as well as the RCIA Team), thanks for all that you do to inspire us to seek the Lord first! Finally, to you the parishioners of St. Agnes. Thanks for making it a memorable Tridium. May God’s blessings be upon you this season.

At the beginning of creation, God breathed the Holy Spirit into the nostrils of Adam so that he would receive life. Adam and Eve, our first parents, lived in a perfect world until sin slithered in to disrupt our relationship with God. In our weaknesses, we turned to sin and thus lost God’s favor. However, God did not turn his back to us and walk away from us, his most prized creations, even though we often were un-grateful of his merciful love. God vowed that he would one day send a redeemer to save us from our sinful ways so that we might again reside again in his loving grace.

During this Easter season, we commemorated the most significant event in human history, the fulfillment of God’s promise through the Passion and Resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. It is through God‘s merciful love, even though we are sinners that he fulfills his promise. It is through God’s merciful love that he continues to intervene in our lives forgiving our sins, calling us to cleanse our conscious and rededicating ourselves to him. It is through God’s merciful love that we can look forward to the day of our death and resurrection.

We often fearfully wonder if our way to the Kingdom will be blocked because we fail to remain wholly free from sin. We fear that we will not be able to enter heaven because of the deviant thoughts that creep into our consciousness or because of our inability to believe in the saving power of our God. However, God in his mercy never leaves us even as we fail in our faith of him. He demonstrated his unending love for us in sending his only Son as our Savior.

Jesus remains with us as we encounter the threats that often challenge our faith. He remains our beacon of hope even while murderers attack us while we celebrate his Resurrection. He remains our sacred answer in seeking human dignity for each person even while politicians fight about words rather than about lives. He remains our trustworthy advocate gently guiding us to our heavenly homeland while we fear for our souls in a destructively evil world. Jesus remains the solution to the ache in our hearts when we fear that there is no hope.

We will not find solace for this heartache except in seeking out the Lord. Although our sins were the cause of Jesus’ suffer-ing and death, in his never-ending love, he still lovingly returns to us at his Resurrection. Jesus as his first act after his resurrection was to take away the fears of the Apostles by breathing on them, filling them with the Holy Spirit. This breath commemorates the breath giving birth to Adam at the dawn of creation, also indicates our rebirth freeing us from the chains of sin and death.

Jesus in breathing on the Apostles changes them forever giving them the ability to forgive sins, to cure the diseased and drive out demons. Jesus sent them on a mission to evangelize the world with the words:

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. (Matthew 28:19-20)

These sacred powers given to the Apostles have been propagated down in the succeeding generations through the ordination of our priests. In the reception of the Sacraments, through the hands of the priest, we too experience Jesus’ power to change our lives.

Each time we receive a Sacrament we are publicly proclaiming as the Apostle Thomas once did “My Lord and My God” for we are accepting that Jesus has saved us from our sins. In each Sacrament, Jesus stands before us and breathes upon us transmit-ting God’s grace through the actions of the Holy Spirit. When we receive one of the Sacraments, we proclaim our trust in the Lord. We proclaim that we can walk without fear for the Lord will show us the way. We proclaim that we believe that the Lord’s love is unending and that he will lead us into his heavenly Kingdom.

Jesus comes to us in the Sacraments so that we can believe in God’s mercy and love. We know of God’s mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation where he forgives our sins assuring us that he will never leave us. We become more aware of God’s love when we receive the Body and Blood of his Son in the Eucharist assuring us of his promise to save us. In his mercy, “Our Lord and Our God” is always with us. In his love, “Our Lord and Our God” will always save us.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Sunday of Divine Mercy Gospel: John 20:19-29

On the Way to Mass: Why does Jesus emphasize peace? On the Way Home From Mass: The Second Sunday of Easter also is called the Sunday of Divine Mercy. How are peace and mercy related? Living the Word: Just as Thomas doubted, so do we at times. Ask each person to make a list of doubts or worries and then rate them from one to five, with one being very important and five the least urgent. Go through the lists as a family and see if sharing doubts eases the burden. Is there another way family members can help share the burden? After the discussion, invite the family to look at the lists again. Would they rate anything differently now?

One of the unique features of Totus Tuus is the two independent cycles of catechetical materials. The six core topics of catechesis (which come by dividing the four pillars of the Catechism into six major elements) and the four mysteries of the Rosary make certain that every summer has an original presentation of material for the students. This year the content focus will be The Sacraments and the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary. Totus Tuus seeks to foster openness to vocations in the young people we serve as well as among the teachers. If your are interested in hosting the female or the male team of leaders please contact the RE Office for more information.

A couple of weeks ago during the weekend liturgies Fr. Vince announced that the high school CYM program is currently being restructured to include the program, Life Teen. I very excited to offer this program to the youth of St. Agnes! I have been working with a core team of youth in planning next year’s events. This core team includes: Allyson Gion, Jonathan Pieper, Erin Hayhurst, Kamden McGrew, and Ethan Gion. The creative energy of this core group is contagious!

I am happy to announce that high school CYM program will have a new name, Life Teen Ignite. The peer ministry team chose the theme of “Ignite, Kindling the Light” for the 2019-2020 program year.

If you are not familiar with Life Teen it was launched in 1985 as a parish-based youth ministry in Mesa, AZ focused on the Mass and gathering teens together at a Life Night. This national organization continues to be focused on bring teens to Christ in the Eucharist and gathering them to be formed in the Roman Catholic faith.

The mission of Life Teen is: As a Eucharist-centered movement within the Roman Catholic Church, Life Teen leads teenagers and their families into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. With the Blessed Virgin Mary as our intercessor and guide, Life Teen seeks to unleash the fullness of Sacramental power present within the young Church.

Life Teen Ignite at St. Agnes will be a youth outreach ministry for any and all 9th-12th grade teens. As previously stated the CYM program will become the Life Teen Ignite program and will be meeting every Wednesday at 7 p.m. beginning in September and running through April, so no changes in the day of the week or the time that families and youth are accustomed to. On Wednesday evening youth will come to explore their faith in a new and exciting way. The high school youth will see how they really CAN live a faithful, Catholic life every day, and strengthen their spirituality and relationship with God. High school youth will have the opportunity to get those answers that they have been looking for, all while having fun with their friends and classmates!

To kick off the new youth ministry program at St. Agnes there will be Life Teen Ignite nights planned this summer, so watch for this in the weekly bulletin and soon look for us on Facebook!

If you have any questions or would like to get involved with St. Agnes’ Life Teen Ignite please talk to any of the members of the peer ministry team or call Terri Calvert in the RE Office.

Please pray for the young Church and the implementation of this exciting program.

Classroom News………... First Grade Class By Sharon Bird

The end of the year is fast approaching!!! We have had a great year in first grade. In March, we went to the Midwest Theater to watch two classmates perform in Pinocchio as toy soldiers. We were so proud of them. Bunnies were made to celebrate Easter. Each bunny was so unique! What a creative group!!!The students then wrote stories. We have been talking about using descriptive words, having good beginnings and endings, and using punctuation. We also made a lenten wreath for our families. We discussed Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and all the important events in Holy Week. The first grade Mass was held on April 24. The students practiced hard for the readings, responsorial psalm and other parts of the Mass. We had Mr. Wolf speak to us about the landfill. He shared a great deal of information with us. On May 3, the class will be going to the Landfill for a field trip. Thank you parents for

volunteering to drive and chaperone. WE COULD NOT DO FIELD TRIPS LIKE THIS WITHOUT YOU! We will also go to the zoo on May 7th followed

by a picnic lunch. The first grade actors and actresses have been working on Reader Theater plays. We will perform these for our parents and friends. We have had fun practicing.

Third Grade Class By Amanda Brill

Wow! Where has the time gone? This year has gone by so fast!

We are back from Easter break and we are ready to take on the last 4 weeks of school. We are well on our way in

Science learning about matter and measurement. We are working really hard

in math too. We are continuing drilling those math facts, word problems, and

fractions. We are beginning to learn about the different kinds of triangles and angles

they can have. All the students did an excellent job presenting their biography reports

to parents this past week. For most of

them, that’s the first time ever speaking to the public. They did

an awesome job! These students are ready to tackle 4th grade and I could not

be any more proud of them! We are excited to start our MAPS testing

this week on the chromebooks. Taking a test is a lot more fun on the chromebooks than with pen and paper. I can’t wait to

see the growth and accomplishments the students have established this school year. We are going to end our year with a bang! As we count down the end of the school year, we will be popping 20

balloons, one for each student. Each balloon will have a child’s

name inside. On the day the child’s name is chosen we will get to praise that child for the day. The class will

get to describe that special student with one descriptive word on the

smart board. Once all the words are on the board, I will take a picture of the student standing in front of the

board. This can be a special keepsake for the student to remember their

third grade year, and to remember how far kind words truly go! We have had a fun journey and transition into third

grade. I am so blessed to have this group of kids. We have become very close and I’m sad to see them go, but WOW, am I excited to see how they will impact and change our world!
