As we come to the final days of the Governor’s stay-at-home order, I know many of you, like me, have grown restless with the isolation. I think for most of us,

the fear of a potential health crisis has passed, and we are now becoming more anxious about the economic re-percussions of the pandemic. Some may be fearful of contracting Covid19, whereas others believe the risk of con-tracting has for the most part passed. None of these feelings are wrong in the sense that we all react to crisis situa-tions and stress in different ways. I think being patient and not judgmental with each other is going to be essential to a successful re-opening of our socie-ty. Regardless of where we are in our feel-ings, there has been some terrible suffering for many in the pandemic, both direct and indirect suffering. Some of you may have experienced deep suffering with the illness or loss of a loved one, and to make it worse were not able to be with and comfort them in their last hour. Some have lost jobs. Some have lost businesses. Some have

suffered a reduction in revenue, salary or in the number of hours they can work. Some have suffered extreme anxiety, fear and depression. The pan-demic and natural effects are things that are outside our control. However, no matter where we are in our life’s journey, we can control our reaction and behavior in light of it. We can all commit to supporting and praying for those who are suffering from illness or the loss of a job, or a loved one. We can make phone calls to those who are lonely. We check to make sure our homebound and shut-ins have what they need, and if they do need some-thing, make arrangements for them. Let’s pray for all those suffering to re-ceive the Grace needed to offer that suffering, and to bear their burdens in the light of the salvation of the world and the hope for eternal life. I hope as we get closer to the end of isolation, your hearts will experience more hope and encouragement. We must not give in to temptation of be-coming bitter, resentful, or having our heart’s hardened. Many experts would say that one way to do that is to direct our attention outward and perform acts of charity. It doesn’t necessarily have to be acts of service or gifts, it can be as simple as giving kind words to help soothe someone else’s suffering.

We might also try to direct our atten-tion away from material things of this world and towards our eternal salva-tion with God. Even if it has been a difficult time for you individually or as a family, we can still thank God for the hope of eternal life that He has given us, a hope that eases the pain of suffer-ing and death in this world with the belief that we will all be joined together again, without pain or suffering, in God's Heavenly Kingdom. That’s what Easter is all about. Let’s try to take this time to reflect on and thank God for all His blessings, great and small. Finally, let us stay motivated to remain steadfast in our faith and with eager-ness continue to persevere through these trying times. With the help of the Holy Spirit and keeping our eyes on the prize of salvation, we can have hope knowing that we were placed here on earth to live the life of faith that has been given to us in this specific mo-ment of time. May we continue to ex-perience God's love in direct ways, but also experience it in the work of The Holy Spirit in ourselves and other peo-ple, that is, in the entire Body of Christ. God Bless you all, and let’s hope we are joined together live and in person soon!!

Through the work of the Mission Club, 15 families were provided with food baskets this Easter. Parishioners donated food while volunteers sorted and prepared baskets before delivering them to those in need. The effort in light of the coro-navirus pandemic couldn’t have been timelier. Thank you to Jamie Wagnon, Mission Club leader, and the many parish-

ioners who donated their time and/or resources!

GOD’S PLAN Saint Peter speaks to us twice today. In the first reading, we hear an excerpt from his sermon on Pentecost; in the sec-ond, part of his first letter. Once a frightened, uneducated fisherman who often said just the wrong thing, now Peter is speaking what he knows to be true. Everything Jesus had said now makes sense. His death and rising were all part of God’s plan, and our faith and hope can be centered on God. Today’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus’ walk to Emmaus with two of the disciples. Frightened, sad, and confused, the two of them don’t recognize Jesus, who tells them what we heard Peter say above: All this had to happen as part of God’s plan. In the end, these disciples recognize Jesus as we are to recognize him—in the breaking of the bread. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA (1347-1380) April 29

Imagine the pope receiving a young woman still in her twenties who addresses him as “my sweet Christ on earth,” then orders: “Get back to Rome where you belong!” Amazingly, Grego-ry XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five chil-dren, Catherine refused mar-riage and became a Domini-can Tertiary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in con-templative prayer, austere penances, and mystical experi-ences, culminating in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of “passing on to others the fruits of contemplation,” Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for converting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called “my Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three! Four hundred letters and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, together with Teresa of Ávila, the first women Doctors of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. History of the Divine Mercy Chaplet

In 1935, St. Faustina received a vi-sion of an angel sent by God to chas-tise a certain city. She began to pray for mercy, but her prayers were powerless. Suddenly she saw the Holy Trinity and felt the power of Jesus’ grace within her. At the same time she found herself pleading with God for mercy with words she heard

interiorly: Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world; for the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us. (Diary, 475)

As she continued saying this inspired prayer, the angel be-came helpless and could not carry out the deserved punish-ment (see 474). The next day, as she was entering the chap-el, she again heard this interior voice, instructing her how to recite the prayer that our Lord later called "the Chaplet." This time, after "have mercy on us" were added the words "and on the whole world" (476). From then on, she recited this form of prayer almost constantly, offering it especially for the dying. In subsequent revelations, the Lord made it clear that the Chaplet was not just for her, but for the whole world. He also attached extraordinary promises to its recita-tion.

Encourage souls to say the Chaplet which I have given you (1541). Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death (687). When they say this Chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the Merciful Savior (1541). Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this Chap-let only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy (687). I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy (687). Through the Chaplet you will obtain everything, if what you ask for is compatible with My will. (1731)

Prayed on ordinary rosary beads, The Chaplet of The Di-vine Mercy is an intercessory prayer that extends the offer-ing of the Eucharist, so it is especially appropriate to use it after having received Holy Communion at Holy Mass. It may be said at any time, but our Lord specifically told St. Faustina to recite it during the nine days before the Feast of Mercy (the first Sunday after Easter). He then added: "By this Novena, [of Chaplets] I will grant every possible grace to souls." (796) It is likewise appropriate to pray the Chap-let during the "Hour of Great Mercy" — three o'clock each afternoon (recalling the time of Christ’s death on the cross). In His revelations to St. Faustina, Our Lord asked for a spe-cial remembrance of His Passion at that hour.

Live stream the Divine Mercy Chaplet on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 3 p.m.: https://stpiusxchurch.org/live.

Divine Mercy Chaplet Formed.org Content

Renowned speaker and author Fr. Michael Gaitley tells the dramatic history of God's love and mercy as interwoven through the transformative message of St. Faustina, the mi-raculous appearance of Mary at Fatima, the witness of Max-imilian Kolbe, and the world-changing papacy of Pope St. John Paul II. Featuring the brilliant cinematic artistry of the Augustine Institute's film studio, the vast panorama of God's work of mercy in the world unfolds as a story to be experienced.

How does a plot that involves the assassination attempts of President Reagan and Pope John Paul II, KGB scheming, and CIA intrigue become the final act to topple the Soviet Empire? The Divine Plan dives deep into the pivotal bond between Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan. Just six weeks apart in the spring of 1981, the pope and the president took bullets from would-be assassins. Surviving strikingly similar near-death experiences, they confided to each other a shared conviction: that God had spared their lives for the purpose of defeating communism.

Heroes of the Faith. The Stories of real-life Saints & Chris-tian Heroes all come to life in CCC of America's award-winning animated film series. Featuring authentic role models today's child can truly believe in.
