AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNIONWRITTEN BY ST. ALPHONSUS DE LIGUORI

My Jesus,

I believe that You

are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

“Humans are amphibians—half spirit and half animal… This means that while their spirit can be directed to an eternal object, their bodies, passions, and imaginations are in continual change. Their nearest approach to constancy, therefore, is undulation – the repeated return to a level from which they repeatedly fall back, a series of troughs and peaks.”

C.S. Lewis writes this in his 8th Screwtape Letter, a series of articles he wrote for The Guardian (a weekly Anglican newspaper and not the current British newspaper of the same name) during the height of The Blitz, the systematic bombing of Britain by the Luftwaffe during WWII. Nearly eighty years later I find his words still relevant to the human condition.

I have a rocking chair tucked into the corner of our living room next to my “shrine” of all things Irish. I use that chair for nothing other than prayer; it helps me get into an appropriate frame of mind as soon as I sit down. If I am in that chair, it is to spend time with God. There is a couch in the middle of the living room and behind it are a coffee and end table, both holding large planters of clover plants. This allows the plants to bathe in the morning sunlight through our patio door (clover loves bright light.) Incidentally, that rocking chair faces those plants and as Spring has progressed, I have noticed something Lewis might have appreciated.

Throughout the Winter the plants were certainly alive. They were green and living, but there were no new shoots off the buds, and I worried that one of them might not survive (lack of consistent watering on

my part.) Then Spring arrived and it was maybe the lengthening days or more intense sunlight or simply the inherent connection of growing things to the yearly cycles. Suddenly all the clovers were exploding in a verdant display of growth, even the one I worried about.

This reminded me of Lewis’ quote from the Screwtape Letters. How like those clover plants are all of us in our faith. During our valleys we are alive but not growing, merely dormant; existing, but not thriving. Going through the motions we say “Bless Us O Lord” before meals and the occasional Our Father. Maybe we occasionally dig out a dusty Rosary or absently lift up our thoughts to God when something goes well or beg Him for help when something does not go well.

However much like those clover plants, we are not dead spiritually, merely dormant. During those times, those troughs, all we need is to open ourselves, just a bit, to the Holy Spirit. It does not need to be a full Summer spiritually, simply a Spring when the first shafts of sunlight begin to warm our souls from a cold Winter. I suspect you would be surprised at how quickly you explode into verdant growth of your own.

Despite the similarities, our spiritual life is not bound to cyclical seasons as plants are. We may through and peak occasionally, but how much more glorious is it to bask in the eternal Summer purchased for us by Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. After the trough of Lent, I pray all of us may ascend that peak of Easter.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

“What are you discussing as you walk along?”

CREATION CARE COUNCILAs we approach the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day (April 22) and in this fifth year of Laudato Si, your Creation Care Council reminds us that caring for ourselves—even if by staying in isolation—is a part of caring for creation. We join you in prayer that all shall be well.

FEED THE POOR AND LAURELVILLE COLLECTION PROGRAMS DELAYEDWe previously announced that the Laurelville Collection would be postponed to the weekend of May 2 and 3. Due to the extension of the Stay at Home Order, both the Laurelville Collection and the Feed the Poor initiative will still take place, but at much later dates than anticipated. We will let you know when we are able to reschedule these much needed programs.

ENTHRONEMENT OF THE SACRED HEARTThe Chancery is encouraging people to consider this practice, offered by Welcome His Heart, which is based here in Columbus, as part of the daily expression of their faith and prayer. During these times of shelter-in-place restrictions, it is good to expand and live out our faith within our homes.

Enthronement of the Sacred Heart points to the importance of family prayer and dedicating their family to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This local apostolate is seeking to strengthen the family unit both locally and beyond. They are providing religious images for families, a digital format to download the image and packet of materials and a website full of resources. This self-guided packet

is faith-filled, and the prayers can be led by anyone.

Welcome His Heart is a Catholic organization designed to strengthen the family in these difficult times as well as in the future.

HELP OUR SCHOOL!One thing we can guarantee you’ve done during this pandemic is buy groceries! If you have not done so already, please take a moment to download the

Box Tops For Education App. It allows you to SCAN your grocery receipt in a matter of seconds and automatically identifies any qualifying items you’ve purchased and then earns money for Our Lady of Perpetual Help! Couldn’t be easier! This is a simple thing to do during our social distancing that will benefit our school. You’re buying groceries anyway —this does not require you to spend any additional money but makes a huge impact for the school if everyone participates. The Box Tops for Education program has been transitioning to a digital format and at some point there will not be clipping of physical box tops.

You may have extra time at home- take a minute to help the school! Download the app and scan your grocery receipts every week! THANK YOU!

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

As we celebrate this Earth Day in 2020, it is monumental and different in many ways. The first being that it is the 50 Anniversary of its adoption. For that first Earth Day a significant number of Ameriacns participated in recognizing and celebrating it, just over 20 million Americans, which was 10% of the entire country’s population. As Christians and Catholics, we also recognize the importance of Laudato Si, an encyclical that Pope Francis released in 2015. This encyclical calls us to be mindful and work for all the common good, human dignity, justice, solidarity, subsidiarity and sustainability. This year we are seeing the world around us much differently, and hopefully seeing more of its beauty. In this period of Stay at Home, we have all had to change our routines and our daily lives.

As much change as we have all had to endure, I am proud to say that the Facilities team here at Our Lady has been steadfast, deliberate, and purposeful in trying to reduce its negative impact on the world. We have been working to lower electrical usage, to reduce overall waste, and to increase composting efforts that help create rich soil for growing plants. These are not new initiatives that have been started this year but we hope to update everyone as we continue to make progress.

A large area of focus has been to reduce electrical usage for all of the campus. One of the largest uses of electricity is lighting. I am happy to report that at this time we are 99% complete in switching the interior lighting in the Church building to energy efficient LED lighting. From the Nave, to offices, to restrooms, to the Life Center are all now lit using LED. There has also been progress in converting the exterior lighting to LED. All of the exterior lighting on both the Church and the School buildings have been converted to LED in the last

year. The two areas still needing completion in the next year will be the parking lot lights ( 33% converted to date) and the Our Lady Center (25% converted to date).

In addition to reducing the wattage of the lighting by using LED, while maintaining the brightness, it is always best if the lights just are not on as much. The installation of occupancy sensor lights was started a couple years ago but it continues. All common area restrooms in the School, Church, and Our Lady Center now have occupancy sensors that ensure that lights are not left on longer than they are needed. The Shepherd’s Room now has an in ceiling occupancy sensor that we are testing for possible use in the Life Center. The School gymnasium lights are still getting occupancy sensors installed as well.

Just as we are trying to reduce the electrical usage, we are also trying to reduce the overall waste that must be hauled off and placed into landfills. Through ever increasing efforts in recycling and composting, we help reduce the landfill content. By reducing our overall amount of all waste, we also reduce wear and tear on the roads and pollution from the trucks that must haul the waste. Last year’s Festival @ Our Lady was a huge initiative that helped greatly reduce the amount of waste that had to be placed in a landfill.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help is committed to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Efforts to continue improving its impact on the world around us will continue. This Earth Day 2020 has been different from the first one 50 years ago and it has brought each of us challenges. While some of these changes have unfortunately hurt to some hearts, they have also brought many blessings. May the small changes we make in our everyday lives continue to be focused on the common good.

Prayer to Care for Our Common Home

TeachingCatholic

.comKIDS

Father of all,Creator and ruler of the universe,

You entrusted your world to us as a gift.Help us to care for it and all people,

that we may live in right relationship –with You,

with ourselves, with one another, and with creation.

Christ our Lord, both divine and human,

You lived among us and died for our sins.Help us to imitate your love for the human family

by recognizing that we are all connected— to our brothers and sisters around the world,

to those in poverty impacted by environmental devastation, and to future generations.

Holy Spirit, giver of wisdom and love,

You breathe life in us and guide us.Help us to live according to your vision,

stirring to action the hearts of all— individuals and families,

communities of faith, and civil and political leaders.

Triune God, help us to hear the cry of those in poverty, and the cry of the earth, so that we may together care for our common home.

Amen.

This prayer from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is based on Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home.
