Learning New LessonsGrowing up, there were

many lessons taught in our “tribe” and, admittedly, some of those lessons were a little more painful than others.

The first lesson, one that I am reminded of often, is that you have choices and consequences. My mother

loved to harp on this (and now my girls get to hear it just as much!) – for every choice you make, you better be prepared to face the consequences.

Another tough lesson I have learned is that the defi-nition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, while hoping for a different result.

As I have gotten back into the swing of cooking chili this spring, one question that has come up repeat-edly is about the new online ticketing option for TICC, and both of these lessons were used.

Every year we hear the same complaints, and some of the same suggestions, and they go hand in hand. What are we doing to attract new cooks, and why don’t we have ticket pre-sales so that the public can purchase in advance and help spread out some of the expense of getting to TICC??

The new online option will help to address both of these questions, and it will bring CASI further into the now, allow a more digital interface with better analyt-ics, and hopefully remove some of the “hoping for different results.”

The Eventbrite platform is used far and wide by

many events, festivals, and concerts as a marketing tool and sales platform. Tags can be set to attract people across the nation who are looking for things to do in Terlingua, or those interested in festivals. The best part is that there is no cost to CASI. Eventbrite’s charges are passed directly to the consumer, which means there is minimal risk for CASI.

The other big question about this is, why are we giving away so much at the gate for pre-sales? This new venture – discounting early bird tickets – is designed to entice those who stumble across TICC, or have always wanted to come, but forget about when it is. While we will have some longtime friends take ad-vantage of the discounts, the Board has agreed that this will be outweighed by the newcomers who visit TICC for the first time.

Your Board of Directors have spent a lot of time discussing the choice to offer online tickets and a pre-sale discount, and the consequences. With the amount of growth and popularity that is being seen in the South Brewster County area, we feel that the consequences will be far more positive than negative.

Lastly, I would like to thank the Board members for their support at the end of January as Shelley and I welcomed Harper Knox Hudspeth to the world on January 30th. I am proud to say that both are doing well, and Harper has already made it to a handful of cookoffs!

2 – Endorsement by a pod in the geographical area proposing to host; and3 – Ability of the promoter to accomodate an unlimited number of cooks.

Applications to host the US National Open Championship may be found at casichili.net under CASI Organizational Information and Resources.

TALLYMASTER REPORT Please join me in congratulating all those cur-rently QUALIFIED to participate in the 2019 Ter-lingua International Chili Championship to be held on Saturday, November 2, at Rancho CASI de los Chisos in Terlingua, Texas. It’s a badge of honor and a proud distinction sought after by many. The year is full of CASI-sanctioned events where points can be achieved and earned towards this qualification, while socializing with friends and making new ones, all over cooking a pot of Texas Red chili to support a charity. The greatest part is the FUN we have, and the

great memories we make! Please note and consider the online process for submission of your cookoff results. It’s an easy process aimed towards immediate submittal of cookoff results and approval of qualifying points, so it’s much faster than the USPS process. I want to hear from you in the event assistance is needed, or if you have any questions, suggestions, and/or comments. I’m here to listen. Please reach out by sending me a note at [email protected] or, if you prefer talking, I can be reached at 409-658-3440.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM REPORTGood day, all.

Wow, what a ride March was for SENMCS and CVP! By the time you read this, the US National Cookoff will be in the books for this year! I hope many of you attended and had a great time! Without the support from our fellow cooks, we could not have pulled this event off! We thank each and every one of you!

I have all the Scholarship applications out to the Committee. We had 50 applications this year! The committee is working hard to pick the next recipients

of our scholarship program. This is a hard job, as there are so many smart and talented students who have applied. Please thank a committee member when you see them – they deserve it!

I will announce the winners in the June issue of the Trails. I know it’s hard to wait that long, but the recipients should know first.

Now I come to ask, When you and your POD are having your monthly meet-ing and thinking of charities for your next few cookoffs, please consider the Scholarship Program! We need funds to continue this program. You cooks keep this program going! I greatly appreciate each and every one of you!

See you down the Chili Trail!

Brandy ReidScholarship Program Administrator

From the Scholarships Director...Generous. A word that can be used to describe any chili cook when it comes

to charity work. We give of our time, material items and money every weekend. And we do this to accomplish our goal of making someone’s life better with each bowl of chili.

On Friday during TICC week, there are many cooks who compete in our International Beans, International Salsa and International Wings cookoffs. The proceeds of these cookoffs go to our scholarship fund, which is currently fund-ing 26 students at colleges and universities across our nation, and soon to add more.

Competing and winning these cookoffs give us bragging rights, and some come with nice cash prizes. This past year our first-place beans winner was Mr. Johnnie Sullivan. Johnnie has been a cook for many years and has always competed in our Friday events to help raise funds for our students, but this year was special for Johnnie and our Scholarship Fund. Johnnie won the coveted first place, but his heart was even bigger when he donated all his winnings back to the Scholarship Fund. This gesture will enable our fund to continue growing

We also had a retired pod in Arizona recently send the fund a check for $2,000 with a thank you for helping our many students.

As Director of Scholarship I want to thank Johnnie and everyone who do-nates to our fund.

Bringing the heat since 2009, the Orlando Chili Cookoff is one of the city’s most mouthwatering festivals. Held on February 16, this year the event attracted more than 10,000 spectators, who sampled chili from over 100 booths in four categories: CASI, Open, Veggie, and Restaurant.

Visitors enjoyed live music from the main stage all day, food truck fare, a beer and wine garden, and a Kids’ Zone, as well as a chili-eating contest.

Over the past ten years, this cookoff has provided support for a variety of charities.

This year’s winner was Dennis Gooding from Deland FL, who autoqualified for TICC ’19, along with Candi Knight-Arevalo, Wellington FL, in second place, and Michael Gatti, Atlanta GA, in third.

This was Dennis’ second year to try his recipe, and I couldn’t be more proud. I love it when a new cook does their homework and comes back to win big. Congrats, Dennis!

Make No Mistake!By Bill Pierson, Senior RefereeVol 3, No 4

Breaking a tie – If you have ever cooked in a CASI cookoff, you have lost a tie-breaker. Our system of judg-ing and scoring the chilis allows for the mathematical probability of ties occurring somewhere on a final table judging, and it frequently happens. (Although, last fall I saw results from a final table with 18 or so cooks and

many judges have absolutely no ties.) Because a tie will have only one winner, it may have multiple losers, especially

a tie among multiple cooks for tenth place. The ties after tenth are broken, but there is little satisfaction in winning a tie-breaker for twelfth place.

CASI’s tie-breaking procedure, as described in Rule II.F.2, involves pulling one of the final table judging sheets at random and letting that sheet determine the winning chili. If ties remain after that, the procedure is repeated until all the ties are broken, or you run out of sheets. So, what happens if you run out of sheets? It is unlikely that all the judges would give two (or more) chilis the exact same score, but it is not out of the realm of possibility. More so if the number of judges approaches the minimum of five. The rules do not cover this, so it is up to the head judge to do what is fair. If the problem tie is in the eleventh and higher group, it could be ignored, but if it involves first, second, third or tenth, it must be broken. A human tie-breaker would be preferable to flipping a coin.

Several years ago, Jim Stateczny developed a computerized tally program that mirrored the CASI manual method of tallying and tie-breaking. At the time I did not know Jim very well, and always wondered why he programmed it to have me lose any tie I was involved in. After years of losing and whining, I was told I just had to cook better chili. I still lose tie-breakers, but I don’t whine anymore.

I was curious to see how our computer tally program would handle the above example of two cups having the same score from all judges. It did not blow up my ‘puter, and it did pick one chili over the other. Each time I had it calculate the results, it selected the tie-breaking sheets in a different sequence, but always picked the higher numbered cup as the winner. Time to use the humans.

The use of a tie-breaking three-person panel has been in the Rules Book for over thirty years. It is seldom employed at smaller, non-automatic qualifying cookoffs. But a few years ago it was mandated for a first-place tie at TICC, and recommended for major automatic qualifying cookoffs. Make no mistake, it is now a generally accepted practice.

Sometimes, late in the day, it is difficult to find three people who have not cooked or judged to perform this task. And it can be difficult to get people to wait around all day in case they may be needed. But I think there is a bigger problem with this tie-breaking provision.

Our rules describe one method of judging chili, and it is used at the preliminary, final, and tie-breaking level. We judge the chili on its own merits. Although it has been removed from the judging instructions, ‘do not compare’ is still being said and remembered. Obviously, all chilis tied for first place would be very good, and expectedly could get the same score from the tie-breaking panel. Then we have to do it all over again.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a special rule for the tie-breaking panel? One where they are encouraged to compare? One where they ‘rank’ the chilis, one, two, or three, etc. After all, the purpose of the tie-breaking panel is to pick a win-ner. I would love to get some feedback on this idea. Maybe it could show up as a proposed rules change in 2020.

As always, I love to hear from you at [email protected], or 630.879.7934.

Everyone is doing a great job creating cookoffs online! There are only a couple of things I need to call to your attention.

When you create a cookoff and you don’t request a box of Trails, cup tickets, or a rule book, you will not receive a packet of forms by regular mail. Your forms will be included in your approval email as a .pdf file. Please print out the forms, and fill in your cookoff date and the cookoff number shown on the approval email.

When submitting cookoff info for me to put into the system, please use the form online or in the Terlingua

Trails so all information needed will be covered. Often email addresses, zip codes and counties are left off. If you are doing the input yourself and have a problem, please contact me instead of trying to submit again, especially if you get an error message. Thank you for your support! Thank you, everyone, for working so hard and adjusting to the CMS so won-derfully. I appreciate your help. To meet the cookoff advertising requirement, upcoming cookoffs must be publicized in the Terlingua Trails in the month prior to the event OR be approved and appear on the official calendar 30 days prior to the date of the cookoff. If your cookoff must be cancelled, please let me know as soon as possible in order to keep the website current. You may enter your information at www.casichili.net or you can complete the Upcoming Cookoff Information form found in the back of the Trails and send it by mail to me at CASI Events, 802 Horizon Dr, Murphy TX 75094, by fax to 972.578.9232, or by email to [email protected]. If you have any questions you can reach me at 214.802.8194.

Free Quarter Page Ad for CASI Pod Cookoffs All CASI Pods are required to conduct a pod cookoff once a year. To help advertise your pod cookoff, you may run a quarter-page ad in the month your cookoff occurs. This courtesy is also extended to State, Regional, and National Open Cookoffs. If you want an ad larger than a quarter page, or you wish to run it more than once, we will bill you for the difference in price. This ad should not be confused with the article advertising your cookoff in the "Upcoming Events" section. That article starts to run in the next issue after your cookoff is registered and continues until your cookoff occurs. Every cookoff receiving a free ad is required by CASI policy to submit an article and photos after the event. SUBMISSION DEADLINE is the 15th of EACH MONTH.
