April 2021 Newsletter Dear Families, Let us take a moment to pause and enjoy these first moments of spring. The year thus far has been one for the record books and we hope that Spring Break provides you and your families some reprieve and time to unwind and enjoy the outdoors. As the saying goes, March came in like a lamb and we are so pleased that in turn it seems as though it will be out like a lamb as well! We are looking forward to the longer days and increasing warmth of April. This time of year we say goodbye to skates and shovels and replace them with rubber boots and splash pants. The ongoing shuffle of appropriate outerwear never seems to end, whether it be at home or at school. However, let’s throw open our arms to spring and welcome all of its endless possibilities. With any luck, the snow will stay away until next year and we can get an early start to spring! This past month saw students engaged in exciting academics and extra-curricular activities: Tri-Conferences were held March 17-19 and report cards were sent home electronically on the 22 nd . We will be sending out a survey after Spring Break to gather your opinions on the timing, format, and order of these important components of your child’s school experience. Our Read-a-Thon concluded with our “bookworm” stretching from one end of the school to the other, and back again; representing more than 5000 books/chapters read by students! Additionally, the fundraiser garnered a final total of $6037.80 in donations all of which will be put towards our Outdoor Rejuvenation Project! Our Outdoor Rejuvenation Project continues to make progress, with our Parent Council receiving a $45,000 Community Incentive Grant from the City of Winnipeg. Thank you to our City Councillor, John Orlikow, for his guidance and support through this process. All told, our confirmed project will now include the construction of the Lunar Blast Net-Climber as well as the Global Motion Play-Structurebeginning on June 7. Parent Council is awaiting word from a few more grant proposals and hopefully we are able to include the proposed Nature Playground, additional seating, shade trees, and an accessible walkway. Stay tuned… Classes in the Hebrew program celebrated Passover and students in the English program celebrated Spring on March 26. Also on the 26 th , the whole school enjoyed our March assemblya great way to celebrate our school community! Looking forward to an exciting month ahead, Brock Corydon will be marking Pink Day on April 14. The Day of Pink is an internationally held anti-bullying awareness campaign that celebrates diversity and raises awareness to stop homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, and all forms of bullying. We at Brock Corydon are proud that our students will be part of such positive social awareness. Lastly, for grade 6 families, there will be a Gr. 6 Farewell meeting on April 12 a link will be sent out at a later date. Thank you to everyone who joined in for our March PAC meeting. Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 6 at 7:00 p.m. over Zoom. The link will be sent out the day of. We hope you can join us. This year staff appreciation looked a little different as we had to think outside of our usual box. To show our appreciation for all the staff do for our kids, we gave them a 30-minute break before lunch to just relax. We brought in our amazing lunch program staff to watch the students in their classrooms and they had planned activities and crafts to keep them busy. We really have the perfect blend of teachers, administration, and staff working hard to make the school run smoothly and providing a wonderful education and safe environment for the students. So thank you, thank you, thank you, for all you do!! You make a difference. Thank you to all the families who supported the Read-a-Thon. We raised a total of $6037.80! This allowed us to install the Global Motion this June along with the Lunar Blast. The kids are very excited to be able to use these new structures before the end of the school year. The plant fundraiser was also a success. Final numbers will be included in next month’s newsletter. An email will go out in May with all the information needed for pickup on Friday, May 21. The PAC has decided to do a trial Subway Fun Lunch on Thursday, April 22. We will be using Permission Click to fill out the forms and pay online. We will not be able to accept late orders so please make sure you fill out the form and payment right away. Preferred payment will be online or e-Transfer but we can accept cash or cheque sent in to the office. We will be offering 6 inch subs, cookies, and chips. Money earned from Fun Lunch sales will be going right back into the classrooms for the teachers to use for supplies, books, technology, or anything that they need to help with learning for their students. The email will go out April 5 and the deadline to order will be April 9. The PAC will be saying goodbye to our Vice Chair, Eden, as her youngest child will be graduating this year. We are still looking for a parent to fill this position for next year. The main responsibilities of the Vice Chair include, the phone book, staff appreciation, and attending monthly meetings. Please consider joining our PAC to better help our school community. Please contact Eden for more information at [email protected] We wish all our families a happy Passover and Easter. Enjoy the beautiful weather during spring break. Your PAC Executive Shoshana, Eden, Cindee, Amy, and Jennifer

Welcome to Spring! And with it, puddles and mud! Please ensure your children have the correct clothing for all conditions - cold, wet, hot, or muddy; that means hats, mitts, nylon pants and extra socks/clothing as necessary. Children are reminded not to take any food or drink outside during the lunch hour. It attracts bugs (wasps), creates litter, and is a choking hazard. Bonjour! Vive le printemps!

The primary students are playing the game “Dracula “ to learn how to answer the question, “Comment t’appelles-tu?”

The intermediate students will be learning how to ask and answer the question, “Quel est ton numéro de téléphone?”

We would like to thank Mr. Moglove for stepping in for Mr. McGregor for the past month and a half. Mr. McGregor will be back teaching Phys. Ed. on April 5!

This month students have been taking advantage of the warm weather and heading outdoors for Phys. Ed. This will continue for the rest of the school year! We are happy to have such a great outdoor space for Phys. Ed. to take place.

Reminders for Phys. Ed. class:

Please send a labelled water bottle to school each day as our water fountains continue to be closed. Our water bottle filling stations are open for use. Remember to keep indoor shoes at school and send extra clothing to school in case students get wet outside.

If a child is injured and cannot participate in Phys. Ed. classes, parents/guardians are required to let the classroom teachers and Mr. McGregor know by email so they can accommodate the student.

Students have been enjoying learning music in the gym. With the added space, we have been exploring creative movement through music and how to express music with our bodies. Intermediate students have also enjoyed creating their own chordal compositions using Chrome Music Lab.

Musically,

Morah Sarah

P2!

Thank you to those parents & guardians that have been adhering to the parking rules at drop-off and pick-up times. A reminder that there is no parking in front of the library. It is a “Stop & Drop” Zone for parents/guardians to stop, drop off their children, and move on. As it is a loading zone, you cannot park and leave your car there while walking your children into the school. You will get a ticket if you stop for too long. Do not drop students off in the back lanes. This is extremely dangerous for students as cars are moving up and down the back lanes constantly.
