Speaker for March Girls and Women in STEM
Laura Frost is director of the Whitaker
Center for STEM Education at Florida Gulf
Coast University. She received her B.S. in
Chemistry from Kutztown University of
Pennsylvania and Ph.D. in Chemistry with a
biophysical focus, from the University of
Pennsylvania. She has been a faculty member in
higher education for almost 25 years. As the
Whitaker Center director she has initiated and
developed many STEM
programs for FGCU
faculty, FGCU students,
and SW Florida’s K-12
students and teachers. She
is very passionate about
mentoring girls and
women in STEM and
through the Whitaker
Center provides several
programming opportunities. One of the most
popular is Girls in Engineering, Math and
Science (GEMS). GEMS is a Saturday morning
program for middle-school girls to share their
passion for science, engineering, and
mathematics with our FGCU female STEM
majors who assist them with hands-on STEM
activities. The activities are developed and
delivered by FGCU students or faculty in
consultation with the Whitaker Center. Since
2013 over 1200 middle school girls have
participated in this program. Over 90% of the
girls tell us that they are more excited about
science after attending a GEMS event, so we
think we are on the right track! At the luncheon
Dr. Frost will share recent research about when
girls leave STEM behind and what we can do to
encourage girls and women who like STEM to
pursue those careers. More information about
Whitaker Center programming can be found at
www.fgcu.edu/WhitakerCenter
Scholarship We received a lovely thank-you note from Sierra
Edelstein. We include the
note here:
“Dear Janet and Kathy (and
AAUW members),
I am writing to express
my heartfelt appreciation
for winning the AAUW-
Marie Glasgow prize for my
science fair project. I am
extremely honored to be the recipient of this very
special award. Marie Glasgow was an incredible
woman and I am grateful to be awarded with
this scholarship prize in her name. Marie’s
achievements in education are an inspiration to
me.
Like Marie, I am committed to education
and would like to obtain a PhD. My career
ambition is to earn my degree in Physics and
teach and conduct research at a University. I
greatly appreciate the financial award of $500 as
it will help with my college education.
I enjoyed learning about AAUW and
meeting the members at the luncheon meeting.
The STEM prize and the AAUW was
encouraged me to work hard and achieve my
goals!
Again, thank you so much for your
generosity.
Sincerely,
Sierra Edelstein
President’s Message
Spring has arrived and our membership
renewal has started. We will have a drawing in
May for a free lunch for next year. To get your
name in for the drawing, you must renew your
membership by May 1st, so remember to get a
renewal form filled out and a check for $80
(regular membership) turned in to Judith Sims or
Carolyn Nance.
We are starting to organize for the Fashion
Show. It will be held on December 7th, 2019 at
The Marina at Edison Ford on W. First St. If you
are interested in helping with the pre-event
planning, please email me at
[email protected]. I will be arranging a
planning meeting at The Landings before the
April luncheon.
New officers will be sworn in at the May
luncheon. We are looking for a President-Elect,
Secretary, and Program Director. Phyllis Wayco
will be speaking at the next luncheon about the
Program Director’s position. She says it’s the
easiest job on the board. If you are interested in
getting involved, and please do contact Tina
Hoegler or Marilyn Myli.
Looking forward to seeing you at the April
luncheon. Make reservations asap in order to help
The Landing’s staff with planning our event.

American computer
scientist & United States Navy
rear admiral
Computer Science for all stands on the
shoulders of pioneers such as Grace Brewster
Murray Hopper. She was an American computer
scientist and United States Navy rear admiral. One
of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I
computer, she was a pioneer of computer
programming. This led to the COBOL language,
which was inspired by her idea of a language being
based on English words.
