President Michele Turner April 2018 On March 15 th , six members of SHRW (Sheri McKay, Sydney Ingram, Dot Kazanjian, Jeanne Hoag, Phyllis Hansen, and I) attended the Graduationat the Henderson Veterans Court. It it hard to put into words what a moving experience it was. We were all thanked by Judge Mark Stevens for our being there and for our support. Three men and one woman graduated that day and had their records sealed. We need to be supporting this program by our attendance at these graduations and by donations to help support this important program. I am in contact with Judge Stevenss assistant, Amber Gentry; I will be able to notify members of the next Graduationevent. I encourage you to attend, especially the veterans among you. Some of you may also wish to volunteer to become mentors. I find Judge Stevens a man full of human kindness. Each Thursday at 2 pm, veterans in the program report to the court with their mentor. Judge Stevens never fails to give compliments on accomplishments and improved physical appearance. He also discusses their goals for the coming week giving them pride in front of all in attendance. We support the Veterans Court. I want to continue to support this great program. My Point of View

By Rana Goodman

Did You Know By Sydney Ingram

I cannot tell you how exciting it is to start compiling a list of volunteers and see you amazing list of retirees wanting to step up and help do some satisfying work to help fellow seniors of our city.

When I got the idea of starting our 4R program, (Resources, Review, Referrals/ References) we put out a call for volunteers to help us gather the information we would need to build a directory and screen the many resources you, our readers may want to tap into. It never occurred to us that there would be such an overwhelming response from such a talented bunch of retirees stepping forward.

We now have an impressive list of nurses, attorneys, care-givers geriatricians, financial analysts, people who once worked in all kinds of professions that can, and will be so helpful in checking out the places we want to review for our senior community.

Another tid-bit of interest we learned about over the last week; a Guardianship “hot-line” was established by the Nevada Supreme Court or perhaps the permanent guardianship commission. The Vegas Voice was not privy to the press release, it looks like only the TV stations were, however, what is most interesting is that the “hot-line” should be called a “sit down and wait line” since it Is a recording that will get back to you...eventually….. Talking about recorded lines, I must sincerely apologize to those of you who have not received your Nevada Lockbox card from the Secretary of State’s office. It seems that the phone number that was provided to me by that office has been overwhelmed with calls and is no longer accepting calls. That too has now been placed on a recorded line. If you have questions regarding the receipt of your card you will need to call the main line which is 702-486-2880.

I have another “heads up” for you .. SCAM ALERT If you, like me, subscribe to magazines via mail, PLEASE read your renewal, or “CONTINUATION OF ORDER OFFER” very carefully before mailing that check. I was about to pick up my phone and make that “hey, hey, hey” phone call, since I have been subscribing to People Magazine for many years and each time I purchase three years at a time, since that is the best value.

When the bill arrived a few days ago I didn’t really examine it, I just added it to the bills due to be paid today, 3/16. As I opened my Quicken program, I was thinking time flies, but has it been 3 years already? As soon as I looked up my last payment to People I saw it had only been 2 years. Looking more closely at the bill I spotted, in tiny print, “PPS Publishing Partners” It was not a bill from People Magazine at all but from a competitor-look-alike. On THE BACK it said if you were not happy they will refund your money less $9 service fee… Yeah right!

LISTEN! CAN YOU HEAR THEM?

As you enter the Na-tional Veteran’s Art Museum in Chicago and listen closely you will hear a sound like wind chimes coming from above. When you look upward your eyes will be drawn 24 feet to the ceiling of the two-story high atrium. What you hear is the sound of 58,000 dog tags hung from the ceiling belonging to the US military men and women who died in Vietnam.

This 10-by-40 foot sculpture, entitled Above and Beyond, was designed by Ned Broderick and Richard Stein. The thousands of metal dog tags are suspended 24 feet in the air, 1 inch apart, from fine lines that allow them to move and chime with shifting air currents. Museum employees using a kiosk and laser pointer help visitors locate the ex-act dog tag with the imprinted name of a lost friend or rel-ative.

Army veteran and Medal of Honor recipient Allen James Lynch says it best: “If you listen just for a moment, just be quiet for a moment and listen. Do you hear it? Do you hear the whispering of all those lives? What are they saying?” He says they tell him that freedom comes at a high price.
