GUESTS SERVED 2017-2018 SEASON November 1, 2017 - March 31, 2018
It is once again difficult for me to believe that we have come to the end of another Hamilton Out of the Cold serving season. It is always a bittersweet time of year. We will miss our guests and our shared experiences in this most worthy of causes. Please allow me to share some highlights from this past season: We served a total of 26,586 meals to
the most vulnerable members of our community – 18,069 Dinners and 8,517
Breakfasts.
Ride For Refuge – Thank you to all of
our participants and donors! This
fundraising initiative was a HUGE
success! Our Development Committee
had set a goal of $10,000.00 and I am
thrilled to report that we raised over
$25,000.00!!
The completion of a secure volunteer database which will enhance organizational communications.
Carole Anne’s Place – we continued our support of this emergency shelter for women in partnership with the YWCA for a second winter. Due to the continued shortage of available shelter beds in the downtown core and the extremely cold temperatures there was a dramatic increase in the number of women using this service.

“Striving to End Hunger in our Community”
Notes from our Executive Director, Glenn Leman
Last winter Carole Anne’s Place had a total of 470 overnight stays.
Unfortunately, the number of women
utilizing this safe warm space has grown exponentially. This winter the
shelter had a total of 1,210 overnight
stays.
Our Board of Directors with the help of our Governance Committee
continues to work on our Bylaw
review and has renewed its focus on
more strategic issues.
The close of our serving season is
always a time of reflection for me, I find
myself thinking a lot about gratitude. I
am grateful for Sister Carole Anne’s
courageous and compassionate efforts
back in 1997 when she chose to reach
out and to provide sustenance and
shelter to those in need.
I am quite certain that she did not
anticipate the far-reaching
consequences of her initial response to
this crisis. Twenty years later, the
program has grown dramatically. We
are now privileged to serve our many
dinner guests from nine churches located throughout the city and we
continue our breakfast program
partnership with Wesley Urban
Ministries from their location on
Ferguson Avenue.
I am grateful for the mentorship and guidance provided by our Board of
Directors, my predecessor Sister Nancy
Sullivan and our Operations Manager Janice Ormond. Their support is
unwavering and very much appreciated.
Thank you to our various committees
for their expertise in guiding this
organization: The Development
Committee, The Finance Committee and
The Governance Committee.
We thank all of our many supporters and donors: Lococo’s, Fortinos, Ancaster Film Fest, ArcelorMittal Dofasco Employee Donations Fund, The Mischa Weisz Foundation, The John & Ellie Voortman Foundation, ZONTA Hamilton 1, The Roman Catholic Diocese and the many schools and faith organizations in our community. We also extend our gratitude to the churches and their congregations who so graciously open their doors to us each week. We simply could not deliver this special meal service program to our guests without their support. Most importantly I am so very grateful to our incredible contingent of volunteers. They are the true heroes of this organization- their compassion and humanitarian efforts are to be commended. Thank you all for your wonderful support .
The following have made donations from November 2017 to March 2018. May you be blessed abundantly for helping our less fortunate sisters and brothers in Hamilton.

ANCASTER FILM FEST Hamilton Out of the Cold is forever grateful for the tremendous charitable support it receives from the Ancaster Film Fest (AFF). Their generosity over many years has greatly aided the program in continuing to serve hot nutritious meals to some of Hamilton’s most vulnerable people. Special Thanks to Julian and the Ancaster Film Fest Committee: Angelo, Lisa, John & Mary, Judy & Paul, Elaine, Bill, Lorraine & Mark. “The Ancaster Film Fest is a not for profit organization. All profits from their screenings are donated to local food banks and the Hamilton Out of the Cold program.” www.ancasterfilmfest.ca
Hamilton Out of the Cold is extremely grateful for the phenomenal support it receives each season from Fortino’s Main W. and from LOCOCO’s. The generosity of these organizations is astounding. Each week Fortinos’ Main St. W. location provides bread for our meal sites. And each week Lococo’s Nebo Rd. and Barton St. Locations donate fresh produce. It is an extraordinary partnership we have, it is truly appreciated and we cannot THANK THEM enough.

In their own Words… A Selection of Poems from our Guests
Anonymous
Seated at worn table,
Earthly cares set aside,
One of many humbled shadows taking life’s
woes in stride.
Eyes downcast past angelic guests
For a respite of rest.
Bowl of soup,
A wedge of bread to be downed
But first, cradled like
They were a jewel in a crown
Among forlorn smiles,
Part of the fold
Lingering for a while out of the cold.
