REVIEW

I got the chance to visit a quaint little art gallery this week called, oddly enough, the Pineapple Lab. I’m still not sure how it’s a Lab or how pineapples are

involved however it does have that kind of New York downtown Art Gallery feel to it. It’s nestled in one of those side roads just near the hooti tooti Rockwell mall. Once inside I first noticed the cocktail bar with the full grown stuffed giraffe standing behind the vodka’s and then turning around to see a stuffed polar bear standing on it hind legs and staring at me no matter where I moved. I guess the owner has an affliction for collecting big dead animals. I then met my main reason

for the trip, the very delightful French Belgium artist Alexandra Van Lierde. She immediately did the french kiss thing on both cheeks which is always very awkward for me, but she was such a beauty I was happy to oblige. She is definitely from the category of “super bubbly” as she walked me around the gallery looking at her many exquisite and thought provoking pieces in her show entitled “Transformations”. After our tour of the galley we sat down and had the most prolific talk about art, emotion and life.

We first got the usual background questions out of the way. She’s now 33 however started painting at the age of 5. She said that her parents noticed her aptitude for art early and sent her to a special school to cultivate her technique. She is currently married to the owner of a BDO here in manila, which is now where she calls her permanent home. She has had art exhibitions in Shanghai, Istanbul, Manila and Brussels and has already sold over 80 paintings. Some of which are now part of famous art collections in Europe and Asia.

She explained in the interview that many of her current inspirations are coming from her surroundings. Several of her oil-based works are of city scenes of Manila, blurred with colors

as if coming from a dream. She told me the sad story of the death of her young son taken from her early in his life due to an incurable illness and how it’s his memory that pushes her to paint. She said all the works are a gift for him. Some of the works are mixes of vivid colors with partial faces almost seemly peering out from behind the painting. As we continued to talk, I could feel the stirring emotions in me as she explained the soul that she leaves in every work. After the interview we walked through the gallery again just talking about each painting. I was now beginning to see the passion that she puts in to each work and the feelings and sediments that she is able to create.

I highly recommend checking out this exhibition. And when you’re there take some extra time to absorb the emotion that Alexandra has presented to us and maybe you too will be “Transformed” as I unexpectedly was . Her exhibition will be at the Pineapple Lab Art Gallery from now until April 11, and don’t let the polar bear scare you….he just stuffed.

Cool your April summer with a jazz night together with the world-renowned music icon, Kenny G. Sit back and let your heart fly away as his immortal

tunes bring you to sweet memories of yester-years.

Born Kenneth Bruce Gorelick on June 5, 1956, in Seattle, Washington to Jewish parents, Kenny G started to play the saxophone at a very young age. He started at age 10, and although he failed in his first attempt to enter into a jazz band in high school, he didn’t give up on his passion and tried again the following year. Together with private lessons on the saxophone and the clarinet, his talent began to soar. He started being a professional saxophonist at age 17, playing for Barry White at the Paramount Northwest Theater in Seattle.

Kenny G released his self-titled solo album in 1982 after signing a contract with Arista Records as a solo artist. “Duotones’, his fourth studio album, sold millions of copies worldwide. His music invaded the Billboard Top 100 charts as he continued to collaborate with other popular jazz, R&B, and hip-hop artists of the decade such as Andrea Bocelli, Tony Braxton, Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, and many others. In the 1990s, the Kenny G brand of music was very popular with romantic moviegoers. Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston’s “The Bodyguard” was immortalized to his tune. The pledge of undying love in Julia Robert and Campbell Scott’s “Dying Young” resonated through his bittersweet and romantic melody. Kenny G became a household name in the entertainment industry.

A Grammy Award winner for Best Instrumental Composition, he also holds the longest note recorded on a saxophone in 1997 according to Guinness Book of World Records. He collaborated with

many other popular artists in 2000 onwards in different genres, and was America’s highest selling artist at one time. This year alone, he has a long queue of concerts in different parts of America. After more than four decades of playing great music, fans from all over the world continue to watch his concerts and listen to his undying music.

Less than a year after his last performance in the country, Sanre Entertainment brings Kenny G back to the Filipino audience on April 27, 2017, at Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World, Manila. Mark that calendar and spend a classic and classy evening for two hours starting at 8PM. For more details of his concert, go to Concerts and Music section of Manilascope.com. COOL and ROMANTIC SUMMER with KENNY G!

The kids are finally off from school! With a heat index between 41-54 degrees Celsius in Manila, who wants them to stay at home and hibernate

for two months? Support the creativity in them this summer!

Busy, working parents might not have enough time to hang-out with their kids on summer breaks. So, they can opt for activities where they can keep their young ones preoccupied as well. But is that the only reason for enrolling in summer trainings, workshops,

and activities? Surely not! Summer is a wonderful time to focus on their creativity by enhancing their ideas developed in school, or by tapping on talents and ideas not fully discovered inside the classroom yet. In summer classes, they become independent, more creative, more sociable, and less likely to need babysitters. By the end of summer, their school time-out period becomes productive, yet fun and relaxing at the same time.

Summer Workshops and Activities for Pro-Active Kids, Teens & Adults

By Vicky Siacor, Contributor, Manilascope.com

Check out the wide selection of activities that your loved ones can enrol in this summer at Manilascope.com. Simply go Trainings/Workshops or Children/Youth Activities section. There’s “Ayala Museum Summer Workshops” for all ages, where they can do acrylic, oil, and watercolor painting. They can also do some writing, drawing, and photography activities for both parents and kids. Love space? There’s the “Junior Astronaut Academy” by the Philippine Science Centrum. Want to watch a movie? Then why not see a musical adventure from “Paw Patrol”, and watch their favorite Nickelodeon pups live onstage. Got allowance issues? Your 7-15 year olds can learn positive money-handling habits that will train them to be financially responsible in “Money Camp”. Like copying voices and creating sounds? Get them into “VoiceWorx Basic Voice Acting and Dubbing Workshop”. Who knows? They might be headed for a successful voice acting or animation career in the future.

Remember: formal classes in school focus mainly on left brain functions (logical thinking, calculations, etc.). The right brain functions – like arts and imaginative thinking – are sometimes overpowered by the left brain activities. Support your child’s over-all development all year through, regardless of age! Check out the events and activities that best suit them and yourself, and enrol now! (Want a tip? The “limited seats” are usually the best ones.)
