President's Corner March was another good month for dancing in the RVA. While the weather was pretty much a roller coaster ride between record highs and typical cold, the dancing was constant. We certainly appreciate the support of our members who attend regularly and the encouragement of others who are discovering what we bring to the table as a ballroom dance option.
We had another good turnout of close to 70 at Brookland for our First Saturday dance in March. John Holcomb returned to complete a challenging, but fun Hustle pattern that he started in February. There were close to 50 in his class and most of them mastered the moves and used them all evening when he played Hustles. John does a great job as deejay and had a lot of new music that evening for our dancing pleasure. He also wowed the crowd with a Hustle exhibition with Corinne Casper. They were dance partners at one point and it looked like they had not lost a beat in the interim. It was nice having John back in our instructor rotation and we hope to see him back again soon. This month we are pleased to welcome David Headly back to Brookland for the first of two West Coast Swing lessons. David is a popular instructor at Rigby’s Jig and it is always a treat to have him come teach for us. This will be a great chance to pick up some new moves for your West Coast and to add some styling to your dance. David is one of the best at teaching in our area and Doug McRae is returning to deejay for us so you do not want to miss this one!
The Third Saturday Dance at Deep Run in March was another great evening of dance. Exactly 100 dancers showed up to take advantage of this beautiful venue and to enjoy the wonderful dance mix played by DJ Bill Irwin. It all kicked off with a sultry Bolero lesson with instructor Edwin Roa, who drove in from Charlottesville to teach our class. Edwin and his partner taught a new pattern and added great footwork and styling tips to enhance everyone’s Latin dancing. They also performed a beautiful
Rumba/Bolero number for our appreciative crowd. This was the first of two Bolero lessons that Edwin will be teaching for us, but the second one will have to wait as this month, Phyllis Harris will be teaching a Viennese Waltz lesson at the beginning of the Deep Run dance. Phyllis is one of our chapter’s most popular instructors and will teach you enough VW that you will want to get out there on the floor whenever one is played. And speaking of waltz… The Rigby’s Jig Formation Team performed a beautiful Waltz formation for us at intermission that evening. They performed a routine that they recently presented at the “Dancing with the Richmond Stars” fundraiser. It was wonderful and they looked marvelous. RJ is now offering weekly formation dancing classes, so check out their calendar inside for details.
We ended the month of March with a week of classroom instruction for the cadets in the Navy JROTC program at James River High School to help them prepare for their first-ever Military Ball on the 25th. Phyllis Harris and a number of volunteers from our Chapter taught 15 classes that week. As with most youth classes, it started slow, with cadets reluctant to put themselves out there as dancers. However, with Phyllis’ fun instruction and the enthusiasm of our volunteers, in no time each class became a success in teaching Hustle, Merengue, and Bachata. The cadets were polite, attentive, and respectful of our team and we could see how much fun they were having learning partner dancing. After the lessons, a number of additional cadets decided to attend the Ball on March 25. The dance was for JROTC programs from five ChesterfieldCounty schools and the JRHS cadets were the only ones who were really “dancing” that evening! We want to thank Phyllis and ALL of the volunteers who made this possible.
See you on the dance floor! Phil

Tri-Cities News by Ruth Wilbourne
Happy Easter It was a cold, cold night for our St. Patrick’s Day dance, but the dancers braved the low temperature and came to dance to a lot of good music by Jerry Scaglione. We didn’t dance the Irish Jig, but Amy Hontos got us dancing the Cha Cha. She taught the basic steps and included the more advanced Butterfly step. Everyone seemed to catch on pretty quickly as those steps were seen being danced after the lesson was over. Later in the evening Amy and Tri-Cities member Linda Harper entertained us with a “fun” Jive routine to Meghan Trainor’s “Dear Future Husband”. It was fun to watch them dance to that lively music in their “wedding” costumes.
Phyllis Harris will be teaching Waltz at our April 8th dance. We are looking forward to having Phyllis back. She is an excellent instructor and has a wealth of knowledge to share. Doug McRae will be playing the music. Doug does a fine job, and we always look forward to dancing to his playlist. Tri-Cities member Bill Gandel taught the basic steps in Waltz, Foxtrot and East Coast Swing to an enthusiastic group at the Prince George Parks and Recreation Department in March. Although this was not sponsored by USA Dance, he did promote the organization and gave out literature about the Tri-Cities Chapter and the National organization. Bill has been teaching a beginner class at the Parks and Recreation Department for the past 11 years.
See you on April 8th, and hopefully, Spring will have arrived for sure. Dancing Feet are Happy Feet!

Winfree Segal LOD: Winfree, we met at a dance studio and I later saw you on your job at the Tuckahoe Library. Some people think of libraries as places without much excitement, but I bet you have some very interesting stories about your job. What is the most unusual incident you’ve ever had while working?
Well some of my library stories are perhaps better left unsaid!
We do have some patrons with unusual requests. For example, one person has been calling daily for the past 12 plus years to have three horoscopes read to him, although he tells us he doesn’t believe in them. Sometimes as we read them other people are waiting and when we get off the phone they look at us in a bemused way…
Another patron has been calling for years to ask about news of Whitney Houston. While Houston was alive we’d look up stories and read them to her. You might perhaps see us roll our eyes during these phone calls, but when Houston died there was a simultaneous reaction of sympathy for this patron among all of the librarians in the county system. Then we didn’t hear from this patron for over a year. Eventually she started calling about Bobbi Christina and now she is back to calling about Houston but it’s difficult to find out much new information on someone who’s deceased!
LOD: How long have you been in this field? Have you pursued other careers in the past?
I did some career testing at the University of Richmond and librarian was a high match of job satisfaction for me, so I began working at the VCU library part time and taking classes. Before that I was working part time in the areas of child support policy and adoptions and, of course, raising my three children. I knew that as they got older I wanted something different for full time work.
LOD: Are you a native of Richmond? If not, where were you born and where else have you lived?
I was born and raised in Warrenton, VA, one of those places where you think it is boring to grow up but then look back on fondly. I lived in Denmark while in college and worked one summer at Glacier National Park. After graduating and working in Richmond for a couple of years, I went to Florida for graduate school.
My family has relatives on one side going back to the 1600’s in New Kent County and on the other to 1700’s in Hanover County, so I joke that I haven’t gone far from my roots in the last 350 years or so.
LOD: As a child, what was your favorite pastime?
I liked reading (no surprise there) and riding horses.
LOD: You’ve told me you’re preparing for your daughter’s wedding. Where does she live and when is the wedding?
My daughter lives in Arlington and the wedding is Labor Day weekend this year here in Richmond.
LOD: Do you have other family? Where do they live?
I have a brother and sister-in-law who live here in town and two sons. My second son lives in Arlington also and some of you have kindly let me show off pictures of his baby girl, my first grandchild. My older son lives in northern Virginia as well.
LOD: What motivated you to start ballroom dancing?
My son Jeff was being married in DC and they advised me that I would be doing a foxtrot with him at the wedding. I tried successfully to put it out of my mind for quite a while, but three weeks before the wedding I realized it would happen and I called Lynn at the Dance Space with a cry for help. Lynn found me a teacher. Then one afternoon after a lesson he suggested that I visit the USA dance at Deep Run; when I came down those steps everyone was waltzing. I thought it was so beautiful and I became hooked.
LOD: What are your favorite dances?
Waltz for the elegance, foxtrot for the Frank Sinatra type music and rumba because it’s slower and I have a chance of keeping up.
LOD: Have you set some dance goals? What are they?
My general goal is to keep improving and to be a better follower. This year I would like to learn a basic
bachata since it is a favorite dance of my daughter’s future in-laws; they are from Bolivia and have dance parties at their house all the time.
LOD: Most of us have had embarrassing or funny moments on the dance floor? Tell us about your “oops” moment.
At that first USA dance (after having only my second lesson that afternoon) Bill Irwin asked me to dance and quickly realized that we had to move off to the corner to get out of the line of dance.
LOD: Is there something on your bucket list you’d like to accomplish in the future?
Last year I accomplished a big goal when I took an eight-day rafting trip down the Colorado River through the length of the Grand Canyon. The rapids and views were amazing, the hiking was hard, and the camping was definitely rustic but wonderful. Here’s a side note. As I said earlier I worked at Glacier National Park one summer in college and later that same year went to Denmark for my junior year. I’ve kept up with people from both of those times ever since. I went on the Grand Canyon trip with the Glacier friend who I’d only seen once since then and have recently visited Denmark with my family to see the Danish friends. So my kids got to see where I lived during college. I had gone from Warrenton, a town of 5,000 to the capital of Denmark—quite a contrast.
LOD: Winfree, I know this is a very busy time for you as weddings take a lot of time and effort. It is very considerate of you to share your life with us. Our members are going to enjoy getting to know you better.
