PRESIDENT’S CORNER I want to thank Fog Tanner for presenting the March pro- gram. It was just so relaxing to watch Fog turn. Every- thing seemed to flow so effortlessly. This month it will be Bill Berry on the lathe, another of our master turners. See the article on this program in this newsletter (page 3). FLASH President’s Challenge FLASH – The presi- dent’s challenges for the past two meetings have been a great success. In retrospect I really wish that I had scheduled more of these, to give credit it was members of the board who said, “we need more President’s Chal- lenges!” So I must give credit where it is due. This month’s challenge will be Empty Bowls. That is all entries will be donated to the Empty Bowls program. Empty Bowls is a grassroots effort by artists and crafts- people in cities and towns across the country to feed the hungry in their communities. The 12 th annual Empty Bowls Houston will be held at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft (HCCC) on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Doug Grissom is heading up the GCWA efforts and he is pushing us to reach our goal, hence this challenge in April. All bowls must be signed and finished. And in case in the future you have any regrets about having donated that bowl you can attend the empty bowls event at HCCC and for a minimum donation of $25 maybe you can get it back, if it is not gone. Or maybe you would like a ceramic bowl or many of the other items that have been donated. Now here is an incentive – each empty bowl donation will receive 5 tickets for the general raffle. Great, right? BUT WAIT, it gets even better. Every person who makes a donation to the empty bowls at the April meeting will get one extra ticket that will be for a Special Raffle, the winner of which will receive a gift certificate worth $50.00. How about that?? Wood Swap? - As reported in the last President’s Corner Mr. Len Starkie from Australia was coming to visit his daughter in Houston and since he is a wood turner he was bringing some small Australian wood for a wood swap. That is he is looking for wood samples indigenous to America. Well Len was unable to make the March meeting due to the high water closure of I-10. But he did make it in town and we had swell time turning at my shop and we went to Ed Peine’s shop where he demonstrated his video guided hollowing set-up. Don Fluker, Ric Tay- lor and I also did some of the turning. And so Len now has a small collaborative hollow form he can take back. But that brings us back to the wood swap. So I have about 1-1/2 dozen pieces of wood I will bring to the April meeting and if you would like to try a piece then bring a piece of wood in return. Len said he would pick them up when he comes back to Houston in 2 or 3 months. Maybe at that time we can get Len to tell us about the Woodturning Association of Western Australia (WAWA). I think you will be really interested. Board Feet By Lane Bradford

Time is up! Well, almost up anyway. The deadline for turning in a completed 2016 GCWA Scholarship Application is noon April 15th via e-mail to Lane Bradford. Presently I have 3 applications in hand and there are 2- $500 Scholarships. The Application forms have been downloaded 15 times from our Forum and I have personally sent out several copies to those who had problems with the download process. It’s time to get stern with the people you gave and application to and see if they actually need your help filling it out or what. It is election time for the GCWA Board of Directors. You will find somewhere in this newsletter a list of those mem-bers who are willing to give their time to help plan and execute all the activities we have, i.e., spring retreat, SWAT, Picnic, Woodworkers Show, monthly meetings, Arbor Day and many, many more events. It is also time to open up for nominations from the floor at the general meeting this month, but please don’t nominate someone that you have not already discussed this with and gotten their approval. Ballots should go out via e-mail or snail mail if you don’t have e-mail soon after and the results will be announced in June when your new Board of Directors will take office. The Board never heard from anyone about another poten-tial storage facility for our trailer and other assets. So we had to vote to continue the rental agreement at our cur-rent location. We ask that you don't stop looking for an-other suitable storage facility for our equipment at a cost closer to zero. We currently have the money to cover this expense but you never know when something could hap-pen that would change our financial situation. Are you ready for the spring retreat? It's scheduled for Friday 6/17 through Sunday 6/19 at our usual facility on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. As in the past years, we need students, teachers, organizers and help-ers in order to have a successful retreat this year. Marty Kaminsky has volunteered to help us out in the key role of Program Director for the retreat. If there is a class you

think we should have at the retreat or one you want to teach then you need to let him know soon because we need to get the class schedule finalized as soon as we can so we can send it out to you for class registration. June is not all that far away. We will also need about 100 mini-lathes from our members, a band-saw or two, several grinders and sharpening jigs. As in the past, the GCWA will repair or replace anything that is lost or broken when it is on loan to us at the retreat. In August we have SWAT in Waco again this year. This will be their 25th anniversary celebration and promises to be a memorable event. Before, you may have heard that SWAT was having some issues with their online registra-tion. They seem to have it working now since it gladly took my money and registration information. In October we will have our annual picnic at George Bush Park, pavilion #2 again. We are still looking for a volun-teer to replace Kai as the picnic organizer this year. Basi-cally you will order the barbeque and plan a appropriate turning activity for the picnic. No skills necessary and all the OJT (On the Job Training) you could possibly want. So long, happy trails, bye-bye, etc. If you still have not paid your 2016 dues, and the last of March is now behind us, you will no longer receive a GCWA newsletter, be al-lowed on the GCWA Forum, be able to enter a turning in show-n-tell, attend the retreat or the picnic, attend any of the hands-on-workshops, take classes from a national demonstrator or sponsor a GCWA scholarship applicant until you are current with your dues. We don't want to lose you. So bring your checkbook or cash to the meeting this month and pay up or mail Walter Mooney or Rene Gonzalez your check for your dues NOW! Did you forget that we are having a special empty bowls raffle at the April meeting? You can bring as many turned bowls as you want. They need to be signed and of good quality. Please don’t bring us something you rescued off the burn pile or something that still has several more hours of work needed on it. For each and every accept-able bowl brought for empty bowls you will get 5 free tick-ets to the general raffle and 1 free ticket to the special raffle for only those that brought in bowls for Empty Bowls.

member is invited. So if you have an issue with or idea for GCWA please feel free to contact a board member or come to the board meeting. We are plodding along on the Retreat this year (Montgomery County Fairgrounds Friday, 17 June through Sunday 19 June 2016). Marty Kaminski has agreed to head up the committee for the programs. So if you would like to teach a class, be sure and tell Marty. Also Don Fluker is in the process of lining up the catering and it appears that we will use the same one we used last

year that everyone seemed to like so well. The spring retreat is the result of a lot of volunteer efforts. If there is change that you would like to see for this year’s program please volunteer and we will do everything we can to sup-port you. Well that is the way things are right now, I am going back to the shop, turn some bowls for the Challenge and hope you are to. Happy Turning!

Reggie

Last Call for Bowls By Don Fluker

This is the last call for your chance to help the hungry people of Houston. At our April meeting we will be accepting bowls for Empty Bowls 2016 for the last time. Re-member the proceeds from the sale of these bowls go to the Hous-ton Food Bank and helps feed Houston's hungry. Doug and I will be delivering all the bowls that we have col-lected the past year in early May. The big Empty Bowls

event at the HCCC is May 14. Come see all the really neat bowls that will be there We only have 140 bowls now and that is short of our goal of 2016. As an incentive to get more bowls we are doing something different at the April meeting. Every one that brings a bowl or bowls will receive 5 free raffle tickets for the regular raffle drawing for each bowl donated. In addi-tion, he/she will receive ONE raffle ticket for a special drawing of a $50.00 gift card at Woodcraft. No matter how many bowls that you bring, you will receive only ONE raffle ticket for the drawing of the gift card. Don’t forget the bowls must be finished and signed to be accepted. A big THANK YOU to all who have donated bowls for Empty Bowls 2016.

Bracelet and Jewelry Set Class By Melania Necessary

I've been an admirer of Janice Levi's turned jewelry and accessories (and everything else she turns!) since joining the club last year. I was very excited to take her HOW on turning a bracelet, pendant and earring set from the same block of wood. As a new turner, with minimal money to spend on my new hobby, I really appreciated her focus on turning these projects without shelling out for job-specific chucks and jigs. We easily completed the sets using a standard chuck system, spindle and bowl gouges and a parting tool, all tools I already have at my home shop!

That thrifty perspective was furthered by turning three pieces of jewelry from a block of wood one inch thick and five inches across, major bang for you buck! Unsurpris-ingly Janice is an excellent teacher. She gave clear in-structions and then happily provided additional instruction to her slower student (....ehem, me). One of the things I liked best about her teaching style was that she didn't simply take over my project when I had a question. She briefly showed me how to make the cut and then let me handle the tools. I left the class feeling confident and in-spired to tackle this project on my own at home. I'm look-ing forward both to taking more classes with Janice spe-cifically and more HOWs in general.

Watch Out! For the CURVE By Bill Berry

The topic for the April demo is TURNING CURVES. Most turnings have a curve, or a part of a curve. It could be a bead or cove, spherical or parabolic. It’s those long para-

bolic curves that become a challenge. I know they are a challenge, because in some of my mentoring sessions, I have seen a lot of you struggle with turning a curve… If you understand the mechanics of the curve, it becomes, with some practice, easier to do. I will show you how to turn a small item that will help develop your curve-turning skills. Come and enjoy. Looking forward to seeing you!

Get Ready, Set, MARK Your Calendars!

By George Kabacinski It’s already April and a third of that has flown by. While we are still working on things for 2016 there is also work being done for 2017! So here’s a quick glimpse of what’s on the horizon and dates you can plug into your 2017 calendar. While final confirmations are still being worked out it appears we will be enjoying a very special demonstrator for our Janu-ary, 2017 general meeting. None other than renowned woodturner, educator, demonstrator, artist, and woodturn-ing ambassador Cindy Drozda will be returning to Hous-ton for a Demo Day followed by several days of classes.

Given that general meetings are, with few exceptions, held on the third Saturday we can expect to see Cindy on Satur-day, January 21, 2017. Dates for the hands-on-classes will be Sunday, January 22, 2017 though Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Over the next 30 – 60 days we will finalize the class topics, determine class fees, and open registration. Based on response we will be able to determine the number of days of hands-on-classes. Be sure to mark your calendars to hold these dates open! And keep an eye out for additional details in the next is-sue of the newsletter and for announcements at general meetings.

Local Class Update By George Kabacinski

The 2016 GCWA HOW class series is officially under way. The first weekend of April we complete two classes with Janice Levi. Both were a success, IMHO. Check out the articles by Melania Necessary about their experiences in the classes. Up next are two classes with Curtis Seebeck on Wood Stabilization and Casting. The two classes are the same, just one session on Saturday and one on Sunday to ac-commodate more students. Since these are not turning classes we can accommodate more students in each class compared to our typical limitation of six per class. At present we have two slots available for each class and there is not much time to register!

We’ll have a break in action for the HOW program for most of May and June. In July we’ll get started back up with Fog Tanner doing another session of his ever popu-lar Skew Magic class on Saturday, July 9th. If you need practice with using the skew this is the class for you. Or if you've not experienced the joy of using this tool for some of the finest off-the-tool finish cuts you really should sign up for Fog’s class. At the end of July Andy Chen will be back with his Seg-menting 201, The Feature Ring class. This is a two-day class which has a prerequisite of having taken his Seg-menting 101 class or demonstrated experience with seg-mented turning. There is only one slot remaining so don't wait long to sign up.

April 2016 - Page 5

Next up on the current schedule is a weekend of classes with another one of our great instructors, Tom Irven. Tom will teach a Basic Bowls class on Saturday, September 10th and an Intermediate/Advanced Boxes class on Sun-day, September, 11th. The Basic Bowls class is a wonder-ful opportunity for newer turners to get instruction from one of the most patient instructors I can think of. It's also a great class for experienced turners who want to brush up on the best methods for turning bowl. The Sunday box

class requires some experience in turning boxes and would not be the best choice for novice turners. Work continues on filling out the remainder of the 2016 class schedule. So stay tuned to the newsletter, meeting announcements, e-mails and the website for updates. Should we send Tweets on class openings? To register for any of the scheduled 2016 classes send a check payable to GCWA for the class registration fee to George Kabacinski, PO Box 371, Cypress, TX 77410.

WWD 2016 Celebrations By Andy Chen

At the end of last July I received an invitation to participate in the World Wood Day (WWD) celebrations again this year. I participated in the WWD celebrations in 2014 in China and again in 2015 in Tur-key. I really enjoyed the experience both times and gladly ac-cepted the invitation even though I had no idea where it was to be held this year. While I was in China doing woodturning demonstra-tions in November I found out this year’s celebrations are

going to be in Kathmandu, Nepal. Talking about exotic places! While in China I was also asked to make suggestions on the members of the woodturning team. We started too late year and were able to recruit American turners only. So I started contacting international turners right away. We were very fortunate to get Eli Avisera from Jerusalem, Israel, a world-renowned turner and teacher and Joss Naigeon from Saou, France. We had five turners on the team in 2014 and four turn-ers in Turkey last year. Because of the devastations from last year’s earthquakes, I was asked to keep the number of turners to three this year to maintain a lower budget.

Advanced Pyrography Class By Scott Haddix

Janice was a saint and do-nate both her Satur-day and her Sun-day to helping her friends and colleagues in the club learn new skills. I benefited from joining her on Sunday for her Advanced Pyrography class, although using the term “advanced” may be a stretch in my case. Janice clearly put a lot of time into preparing materials for this class, and provided numerous handouts for designs, a ready-to-go pendant blank turned from poplar, practice pieces of plywood cut to size, and had numerous tools ready to assist us, for 12 students. I can only imagine the time invested before she even set foot in the classroom. Nine of us were in the

class and we learned to char wood this way and that, to create a multi-tude of effects, to burn cooler and burn hot-ter, and to apply color in vari-ous ways as well. We stressed out some engineers in the class by making them do Zentangle burnings that let your creative side run wild, but at least still maintained some rules along the way. We all learned many new skills, scraped some rust off our previously learned skills, and most of all had fun and had good fellowship.

April 2016 - Page 6

I suggested that we build a wooden lathe for the demon-stration. AAW published the plans for a wooden lathe pow-ered by the drive train from a bicycle last August. It was de-signed by a Canadian teach, Scotty Lewis who had de-signed and built this lathe for a demonstration project in the Dominic Republic. The con-cept seemed simple and the process not that difficult. The only challenge would be the machining of the spin-dles for the head stock and tail stock. When I mentioned my intention to Brent English, the owner of Robust Turn-ing Tools in September at the Rocky Mountain Woodturn-ing Symposium he graciously volunteered to make all the metal parts for me. I received the parts on February 1 and started to build the lathe immediately and finished construction by the end of February. I built it so that I could take just the critical parts, like the head stock, tail stock, the banjo and the drive mechanism but leaving the chassis to be built with local wood after I arrive on site. I made minor modifications on the design so that I could knock it all down and pack it in a suitcase. When it was all packed up it still weighed 70 pounds, 20 more than the air-line’s allowed weight! The celebrations had the official opening ceremony on March 21, the designated World Wood Day but we were supposed to start our demonstra-tions on the 20th. I arrived in Kathmandu late on March 16 (after a grueling 41-h travel), started putting the lathe to-gether immediately and miraculously got it up and running in time. The lathe was so novel and popular that people fought to get on the pedal even before I put the last two screws in. You can view a short video of my wooden lathe in action as Eli Avisera was turning a spin top while Joss Naigeon pedaled at https://www.youtube.com/

watch?v=QZwEiQvsIlk&nohtml5=False. This turning ac-tually took place after the closing ceremony when every-one else had already packed up but the crowd still would-n’t let us go. In addition to the wooden lathe we had two Woodfast M320 12.5” x 20” variable speed lathes flown in from China. Although I had very little turning time on these lathes I was rather impressed with the design and quality of this lathe. We actually had another international wood-turner on the team from Mo-rocco, Hassan El Farissi, who turns with all four limbs on a very minimalistic hand-powered lathe and he was with us in Turkey last year. In addition, a local turner also joined us. I am pleased to report our turning demos were very popular, drawing dozens of onlookers at a time. The WWD events comprise many activities in-cluding wood carving, wood instru-ment performances often with ethnic dancing, folk arts, such as puppet shows, movable wood type demon-strations, furniture building competi-tion, children’s program, tree plant-ing as well as academic symposium. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of our woodturning activity we were constantly working on our lathes and missed most of the other very interesting programs. There were about 250 interna-tional participants at this year’s events representing 105 coun-tries in addition to about another 100 from the host country. Here all the participants get along, even the Jews and Arabs. That’s what I really like about the WWD celebrations.

April Raffle By John Schlobohm

I hope everyone enjoyed the March raffle. This month we will be holding 2 raffles. The first will be our regular monthly club raffle, and the second will be for Empty Bowls. This is the last month to bring empty bowls before the 2016 Houston Food Bank fundraiser. So get you bowls made and bring them to this month’s meeting. We will have a special drawing for $50 gift card for all the bowls that are turned in. You will still get your tickets for the regular raffle as well.

The April raffle has some new items that we have not had be-fore as well as gift cards, tools, wood and more. This month’s WOW prize is something that has been a hit in the past. It is Craftsman 4 HP 18” electric chain saw. The raffles will take a break for the next two month, because of a full day of turning in May and our retreat in June. Hope to see everyone at the raffle table.
