March was a very busy month for FBYC as you can

see by the following articles. It does not appear to

be slowing down, but rather accelerating going for-

ward (what a great problem to have).

Special thanks, again this month, to our FBYC vol-

unteers that have been working at Santa Maria del

Mar, helping with the improvements to the church

hall.

Starting in April we will be moving our start time for

the social portion of the general meetings back to 6:30. Recently it has crept

up and there seemed to be a lull from the end of social time to the beginning

of the meeting.

For those of you not at the General meeting on Thursday, March 17th, your

Executive Board has voted to raise the annual dues, from $75 to $100 (the

first increase in over 10 years). There will be a membership vote at the April

meeting. If you cannot attend and would like to vote by mail, please check yes

or no on the ballot sent by Blast on 3/25 and mail it to the Commodore.

dential, please put your ballot in a sealed envelope inside the envelope you

Below, thanks to Treasurer Linda, is a detailed explanation for the reasons the increase was

needed.

Per Linda: As indicated during our March General Meeting, our club is approaching a financial

dilemma. As I reviewed our expenses and income in preparation for a budget review and comple-

tion of the federal and state corporate income tax forms, it became obvious that we as a Club

could no longer support all the activities we have enjoyed on the dues basis from 10 years ago.

The Club had grown and with that had brought in extra income; now we are experiencing a more

consistent number of members (and income from dues) while our expenses have increased.

Our expenses for 2015 were almost $3000 more than the income. Much of that is due to free

and/or inexpensive BBQ’s, keeping the ticket prices for the Commodores Ball and Christmas

Party to a minimum by subsidizing tickets ($5 - $10 per ticket), restocking our supply of burgees

(minimum order is 25), and increases in fees. The dues collected together with the 50/50's just

barely cover the expenses (rents, insurance, supplies for meetings, beverages, snacks, taxes, cor-

poration fees, internet service).

We did have extra money from when the club's membership grew, but we have now spent that

down with the various give backs or subsidies that the Club has provided. We need sufficient

money in the checking account to cover deposits and bills so at this point, it would be best to

work from a balanced budget and not go further into the reserves that we have.

With this in mind, and after a thorough discussion and analysis by the Executive Board, it is

necessary to raise the dues so the budget can be balanced and services kept at the current level.

The Executive Board indicated to the membership at the March General Meeting and again in a

blast that the Board had approved an increase in the Annual Dues. For the July 1, 2016 – June

30, 2017 fiscal year, the dues for membership in the Flagler Beach Yacht Club would be

$100.00. As per the By-Laws, a vote by the membership must also show consent by a majority

of the members before the increase could be enacted. Therefore, all members are being asked to

vote, either by absentee ballot, or at the April 21 General Meeting. Results will be tabulated and

announced that evening.

PC Bob Jaeger reported on the 2016 Commodore’s Ball which will be held at the Oceanside

County Club. To date, 70 people have signed up for this formal occasion. The cut-off date for

checks ($55 per person) to be received by Bob is April 13. This event promises to be another

great FBYC success, please mark your calendars and get you checks to Bob.

It was noted at the March general meeting that volunteerism within the club is noteworthy: 84%

of all members had been part of teams who had a hand in either the Bowling, treasure hunt/

picnic, and/or St. Patty’s day General Meeting.

Now is a great time to join in and have some fun with all of our great FBYC volunteers for the up-

coming events. If you want to get involved but are not sure how, drop me a note and I will find

the perfect fit for you.

Don’t forget this year’s take you cat tubing day!!!

See you all at Hot Diggity Dog in April,

Commodore Joe

For those of you not at the last meeting, the “fixing up” of the

church hall is coming along very well. The eastern half of the room

is almost complete with new paint, fans and ceiling tiles. For the St

Patty’s Day meeting we moved the meeting to the recently remodeled

side and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Speaking of St Patty’s Day, thanks to Linda Jaeger and her crew for

a delicious corned beef and cabbage dinner. They served over 90

meals and had food left over.

We are going to feed the members again in April with our Hot Diggity Dog night. Jack Cohen is

taking the lead on this “men” only night in the kitchen. The guys will be cooking, serving and

cleaning up for all of you ladies.

Speaking of hot dogs, I already have Rich Franco’s attention, we are going to have a night at the

Jack on May 14th. The Jack being Jackie Robinson Stadium in Daytona for a Tortugas baseball

game. This event is a joint event with the Maritime Committee with some of our boaters staying

over in Daytona following the NSB boat trip.

O.k., FBYClubbers, time for a Spring membership review… kinda

cleaning up the records.

As of March 2016, we have 77 “memberships” with 150 voting mem-

bers. Remember, a dues paying membership can include one or two

voting members when you include spouses and significant others. At

150 members we are at our limit. Several years ago we voted to limit

membership to 150 for two reasons; (1), we were concerned that we’d

find it too hard to try and fully integrate more than that into our

FBYC culture and we’d start to segment and lose cohesiveness. Rea-

son (2), hard to fit more than that into a meeting room or into venues where we hold social activi-

ties. While we don’t ever get all members at one activity, we do get a bunch, but that’s a good

thing.

Our members have listed 58 boats on our roster. This means that we have a number of member-

ships that do not list a boat. Some are former boat owners who are “grandfathered” (or grand-

mothered?) into the club, and others who joined the club without a boat. In any event, our rule is

that 75% of memberships must have a boat. We are currently at 77%. I’ve often wondered how

many of the 58 boats are actually functioning at any given time. They are, after all, boats. Just

wondering.

Good news... we are still pretty much a social club with a boating problem. Right where we want

to be!

Overall, my message is that we are at the peak of our club’s health and we’re ready to “Spring”

into the boating and social season. So, remember to sign up for scheduled activities and don’t

hesitate to raise your hand to help out. Most of our activities are fairly easy to plan and there’s

not a lot of heavy lifting. The more hands, the easier everything gets. And, it’s a great way to make

BFF’s.

On a final note, as always, check your information on our webs membership/boat lists and let me

know of any updates needed.

See you all at our great upcoming events.

Michael Triano and Alan Hendry, Fleet Captains

March arrived, the weather warmed up and FBYC was back on the water with a Treasure Hunt. Randy

Meyer was the lead and selected 17 things to identify. Some were fairly easy and some were quite a chal-

lenge. Following the Treasure Hunt was a lunch at Bing’s Landing. The food was delicious with Hot Dogs,

and Hamburgers provided by the club and side dishes brought by the attendees. Eleven boats participated

and approximately sixty two people were at Bing’s Landing. A big thank you to Randy and his team.

The following is a list of Maritime events we have planned for the next three months. Please mark your cal-

endars for these and sign up at the meetings for any you would like to attend.

April 16th (Saturday): Blessing of the Fleet. Toni Mincin has the lead for this annual event. Boats will

gather by Herschel King Park at 9:30 to be put in order. Mike Triano will coordinate the lineup on channel

68. Once lined up boats proceed to John and Denise Green’s dock on the Intracoastal Waterway for the

blessing. Then you will return home. Lunch will be held at Hidden Treasure. It is a located under the

Route 100 Bridge in Flagler Beach. There will be happy hour drink prices beginning at 12:00 from the

inside bar only. You will need to get a yellow wrist band from Toni or Pam Miller to get the happy hour

pricing. There club will be paying for appetizers (not lunch) which will be served around 12:45. We expect

about sixty people so please order your lunch early as the kitchen may get a little backed up.

May 13-15: There will be a two night trip to Halifax Marina in Daytona Beach. The Marina is located near

a S. Beach Street which is a revitalized older section of Daytona. There will also be a lunch a Boondock’s

restaurant in Wilbur-By-The-Sea for boaters and non boaters. There are shops and restaurants within

walking distance of Halifax Marina. Best of all the Marina is also near the Daytona Baseball Stadium

where the Tortuga’s play. The social committee is planning baseball game event on the 14th. Kate and

Chris Nelson have the lead on the maritime portion of the event and will have additional details at the April

General Meeting.

June 10: The annual Steak and Bake will be held at Mantanzas Inlet. Marty Wilson has the lead with as-

sistance from Mike Triano and Alan Hendry. More details will be in next months newsletter.

Plan now, play later

If you haven’t already done so, now is a great time to examine your required safety gear and

make a shopping list for the coming boating season.

Life jackets: Boats 16 feet and longer are required to have one Type I, II or III life jacket for

every person on board and one throwable Type IV. If you have an inflatable life vest, check the

expiration on the CO2 cartridge. If it needs to be changed, inflate it to experience how it feels

and sounds. Also make sure you have the proper-size life jackets for the kids.

Bell, whistle or sound producing devices: If your vessel is less than 65.6 feet, it must carry

an efficient sound-producing device. If you use an air horn, is it functional and full or rusty

and empty?

Visual distress signals: Check the dates on your flares and replace as needed. If it’s not quite

time, put a sticker on the container or on the outside of the cabinet with the expiration date as

a reminder.

Fire extinguishers: Know how many and what kind of fire extinguishers to have based on the

size of your vessel. Make sure the charge indicator is in the green.

Navigation lights: Check out all your nav lights and see how many spare bulbs you have.

This is a great time to order replacements.

Taking care of any issues now will make it so much easier to cast off the lines in the near fu-

ture. –
