A SEWING ROOM CHAT WITH THE PRESIDENT “Pardon me, may I borrow your serger foot?” When I saw the text I’ll admit I thought for a brief moment, “Do I have a serger foot??? Where is my serger foot??? WAIT A MINUTE!! SERGER FOOT?!?!” After I stopped “roflol” (rollin on the floor laughing out loud) I realized the author of the text was looking to borrow my “serger” and was so new to the sewing scene that they were not familiar with sergers being a separate machine. Then my off-the-wall sense of humor took over and I thought, “Serger foot? What serger foot? We don’t have a serger foot. There is no such thing as aSERGER FOOT!!! (Paraphrasing courtesy of “Tresure of the Sierra Madre” starring Humphry Bogart: “Badges? What Badges? We don’t have any badges. We don’t need no stinking badges!”) When my professional and courteous senses returned, I sheepishly recalled a time when I, too, had no notion of what a serger was, let alone why anyone would want one. In those days I had mountains of enthusiasm but limited knowledge and experience in quilting. We were all there once. Over the years there have been many talented, patient, kind quilters who have generously answered my quilting questions, demonstrated effective techniques, and generally kept me headed in the right direction, and I am sure you have experienced the same. How many of us are currently in a position to be mentor to new quilters? Quite a few, I’d say, just looking at our membership roster! Now it’s our turn! Last count revealed that we have several Guild members who are new to quilting. At the next meeting (and future meetings) reach out to one of our new or newer quilters. Introduce yourself (seriously!). Introduce yourself and chat about where the new quilter is at with their quilting skills. Do they have any questions? Perhaps you have the answer. What a wonderful opportunity to participate in passing on the tradition of quilting! So yes, my dear, you are welcome to borrow my serger. Let me sit down with you and show you how it works...Until Next time, Keep singing --and maybe teach someone to sing while you are at it! Your President, Connie Rafferty, aka “Genghis Khannie” P.S. Our next meeting is on Thursday, April 16th. Remember to make a new name-tag, bring your design ideas for the 2017 Raffle Quilt, and consider taking a position on the SRVQG Board in 2016. Special Request: You will find instructions for the farewell block (Bear Paw Block) for Gloria Gordon in this newsletter. We collected some blocks for her a while back, but would like to have a few more to send Gloria. If you have not already made a farewell block for Gloria, please consider making one now. In fact the Bear Paw is one of the blocks that will be demonstrated at the next meeting. Please bring your signed and dated blocks to the May meeting. Thank You! President’s Note: According to a reliable source, there actually is such a thing as a “serger foot”; I stand corrected!!! However, it is made by only a few companies, and though it is purported to do an overcast stitch and cut the fabric, it does not work very well. There is still no reliable substitute for a serger! Minutes for March 19, 2015Missed the March Meeting? Here’s what happened:

Early Bird: The Early Bird Session topic was Flying Geese and was given by Margo Fisher.

Opening: President Connie Rafferty, opened the meeting. She welcomed visitors Amelia McDaniel.

Announcements: Connie went over the schedule for the evening’s activities since it was different than the normal activities. Linda Echo motioned that the February minutes be approved as published in the March newsletter. Kat Blakely seconded the motion. The motion was carried. Concepts for the 2017 Quilt Show Raffle Quilt need to be presented to the guild in the April meeting. The Board will narrow it down to the final three and the general membership will vote on those. A Chair or Co-Chairs are needed for the 2017 Quilt Show. Please notify a board member if you have interest in this position. The past chairperson will provide advisory assistance, so the new chairperson will not be on their own. A new president will be needed for the 2016 calendar year. Please give suggestions to Kat Blakely or Karen Price who are on the nominating committee. The Guild’s knitting machine has been posted on Craig’s List and KSL to be sold. New members are Jenny Callison, Amelia McDaniel, and Judy Rupe. They were welcomed with their welcome bag. Jenny Callison encouraged people to attend the Blackfoot Quilt Fest on March 27th and 28th. Sandra Brow announced that the intake date for the Bonneville County Fair Quilt Show is July 29, 2015. Please see Sandra for entry forms. Kat awarded prizes for Stash-busters, Mystery Quilt, and the BOM (Block of the Month). She brought her Accu-Quilter to make flying geese for anyone who needs them.

Saturday, March 21st, there will be a workshop to make small quilts for the N.Q.A. auction. It is requested that everyone have their own personal name-tag made by the May meeting. There will be a prize awarded for the best one. It was again announced that we only have water in the sanctuary. We need to honor this in order to have a place to continue meeting.

Show & Tell: Show and Tell participants included Emily Fogg, Sandra Brow, Bonnie Baird, Kim Jockusch, Mary Smith, and Lynne Saul.

Education Segment: There was no Education Segment due to Stash-4-Cash and Live Auction.

Raffle Ticket Draw: There was no Raffle because of Stash-4-Cash and the Live Auction. Connie auctioned off the items on the stage, the Stash-4-Cash Drawings were held in the lobby. The meeting was adjourned at a little after 9:15

QUILTINGuild Quilting Bees are small subsets of the

guild that typically meet in members’ homes to

socialize and quilt together. Some Bees meet

monthly, some weekly, some in the daytime or

evenings. Usually their membership is limited

by the size of the room in which they meet. Call

ahead to see if a particular bee is open to new

members, or is full for now.

Lutheran church located at 290 7th Street. Due to the holiday schedule, Quilty

Pleasures will meet November 21. The schedule for December is still to be decided. We are currently looking forward to some

new projects beginning in January. We will be doing machine fusible applique, working

from Kim Schaefer's Calendar Quilts and Calendar Runners. These are quick projects to put together and offer plenty of variety to pick the patterns that suit you, or bring your own project and join us! I do have a couple of copies available at a discount on a first

come basis. If you would like more information: 208-709-7668 or [email protected].

We meet the first Wednesday of the month from 1:00-4:00; each month we meet at

a different person's house. Contact [email protected] more information.

Have a lot of UnFinished Objects (UFOs)? Here's the Bee for you; This Bee meets the third

Wednesday of each month at Sandra Brow’s house from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. Anyone is welcome to join the

UFO Bee at any time. Our main purpose is to encourage ourselves to work on our own stalled

projects to get them finished. At the bee, we have good light for handwork, and tables and connections

for sewing machines, and even a couple of machines you can use for the afternoon. Join us! By committing to keep a project going, little by little

we get our quilts done. We have a good time working and talking together at the bee, and it’s a

real thrill to enter a piece in local shows or the State Fair that you never thought you would finish, and

maybe even win a ribbon — it has happened!Call Sandra Brow for information and directions at

We Want Your Design!! What type of quilt design do you think will sell the most tickets at our next show?? Do you have an idea for a design? We are asking for design ideas to be turned into Margo Fisher no later than the May guild meeting. The Board will select the semi-finalist designs and the members will vote on their favorite at the June meeting.

The idea has to be fleshed out sufficiently that members can understand the overall idea. It can be drafted and colored in. It could be a quilt from a calendar, or a color copy from a book. We will credit the original designer, as needed, on the quilt when it is made.

Still having trouble thinking of a good design? Look at the photos you have taken at various quilt shows you’ve attended. Why did you take those pictures? Something drew you to those particular quilts so strongly that you needed to take a picture of them. Maybe some of those photos might be inspiring for our design. Submit your photos.

There are a few requirements for the design:

• It should have wide appeal to the public; we want to sell as many tickets as possible.

• The design should be able to be broken down into sub-elements to be parceled out to our membership for their involvement in making the quilt.

• The overall size will be for a queen bed.

Here are some final thoughts as you start thinking about your design.

• Should it be made of all pieced blocks – one block, two blocks, or sampler?

• All Applique?

• Or possibly it should be a combination of pieced and appliqued blocks.

• Should it be On-Point or have a straight set?

• What about a medallion quilt?

• How many borders should it have?

• How about appliqued borders?

• Would a scalloped edge make the whole quilt transform from very pretty to awesome?

• And finally, what colors should be used?

Strap on your thinking caps and develop a design – individually or with your friends. If you have any questions you can contact Margo at 520-7841.

SECRET SISTERS:Check your Secret Sister’s form to

Note from March Early Bird:

In Margo Fisher’s Flying Geese demonstration she told everyone about a film that can be put on the backside of your ruler that will give it very good grip. It eliminates that frustrating blind spot on your ruler that sandpaper discs and other glue-on circles create. The product is by Omni-Grid and is called InvisiGrip. It has been locally available in the past and might still be.

Membership List is Now Available:

Margo Fisher, Membership, will be sending out an updated membership list to everyone. If you do not receive one by email it’s because she either doesn’t know your correct email or you don’t have one. Either way, contact her and she’ll make sure you get a copy.
