a brain injury, spinal cord trauma or a stroke, you have one of the nation’s top

ten rehabilitation hospitals right here in Atlanta. A place where you not only get

the most advanced technology and highest levels of specialized care, but

something really amazing. Hope. So when the unexpected happens, turn to the

I WAS GETTING SOME BAD HEADACHES.

The third one, my wife was present and she

made me go to the doctor. They told me Grady

was the only place that could do what I needed

to be done. Two hours later, I’m having brain

surgery at Grady to repair an aneurysm. I had

to tell my wife good-bye just in case. Grady

saved my life. I mean, that’s the bottom line.

I got out on my daughter’s second birthday

Brown Lindiwe Mkhize as Rafiki in the now-famous opening number,, “The Circle of Life.”

ten times a day, all over the world, the cry in the African language of Zulu rings out in a darkened theater:

Nants ingonyama bagithi baba! Sithi uhhmm ingonyama! (“Here comes a lion, Father. Oh yes, it’s a lion.”)

And the great menagerie comes forth, lions and zebras and birds fluttering overhead, hyenas and a massive lumbering elephant pouring down the aisles. “Seen purely as a visual tapestry, there is simply nothing else like it,” The New York Times wrote when The Lion King opened in 1997, praising “the transport-ing magic wrought by the opening 10 minutes” of the show.

Even though he’s been touring with The Lion King for more than four years, production stage manager Kenneth J. Davis never misses that opening 10 minutes, “The Circle of Life.”

“Every night, all of us who work backstage make it a point to go out and watch that num-ber,” he says. “Every night. We just stand in the back of the house. It’s partially out of deference and respect to the genius that is happening, courtesy of Julie Taymor and the creative peo-ple. Also just to be a part of that moment in the audience. You expect the kids to react, but when you hear the oohs and aahs of the adults, then we know we’ve done our job.”

That job is why they’re at the Fox Theatre this month for a three-week sit-down. It’s the third time a Lion King national tour has played Atlanta, but the first time it has moved into the Fox. The 85-year-old landmark theater has had to make temporary modifications in its auditorium to accommodate the logistically complex musical.

Davis has brought several Broadway shows to the Fox, but for many in this 130-member company, it’s their first time in the space.

“I can’t wait for the cast to come onstage for the first time, not having seen the grandeur that is the auditorium: the gold and the jewels and the gilding” he says. “And also a little unnerving for them to see the 4,000-plus seats. It’s like playing an arena with a rock show.”

Although the show has been on the road since 2002, it’s one of the most complicated ever to tackle a national tour. The North American company travels in 18 trucks; 14 are tractor-trailers that haul duplicates of every-thing: sets, lighting, puppets, etc.

That means that when this Lion King played its final week in Seattle, a duplicate set was being loaded into Atlanta’s Fox. “We need a week of preparation and setup in each city before we open,” Davis says.

The sun rarely sets on The Lion King. This production is one of 10 Lion Kings running or on tour worldwide, from New York to Tokyo. In 2012, the show passed The Phantom of the

Opera as the highest-grossing show in Broadway history. It regularly fills its Broadway home, the Minskoff, to roughly 99 percent capacity, even in the 17th year of its run.

Part of The Lion King’s mission, says Davis, is to bring Africa to the world. Including the Zulu opening, the show uses six African languages, the others being Swahili, Xhosa, Sotho, Tswana and Congolese. And all Lion King companies include native South African performers; this one has six.

So it seems appropriate that in 2007, Johannesburg, South Africa, joined the list of cities where The Lion King has been staged, the first time it played Africa.

Simba and company had finally returned to the continent that birthed them. They had come full circle.

Phil Kloer has written about the arts in Atlanta for 29 years, for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the website ArtsATL.com and Encore Atlanta.

Thirty years ago, the rolling green hills around Alpharetta were wide open spaces. Today, the farms share space with expensive subdivisions, strip

malls and tall office buildings along Ga. 400.There’s also a slice of silicon. Verizon Wire-

less is in Alpharetta, along with the big amphi-theater that bears its name, and Mayor David Belle Isle is busy wooing more technology.

A lively civic scene has emerged: This month’s Alpharetta Arts Streetfest (April 26-27) includes a juried art show. In May, foodies and others flood the Taste of Alpharetta, where more than 50 restaurants serve crowds of more than 50,000.

HISTORICAL NUGGET | A trading post called New Prospect Camp Ground was once

located at a natural spring just north of pres-ent-day Alpharetta. After the Cherokee were driven out, Caucasian settlers came rolling in. Gold had been discovered around Dahlonega and no one knew how far south it extended. Georgia held a land lottery in the early 1830s, handing out parcels of 40 acres around the settlement, which became known as Milton. In 1858 it was renamed — some say the inspira-tion was a popular song featuring a romantic character named Alfarata. Others claim the new name came from the Greek word “alpha” meaning “first.” The names of early settlers live on, too. These include the Mansell brothers (Mansell Road), the Webb family (Webb Bridge Road) and the Ruckers (Rucker Road).

Their next three works together were much more successful – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. Tim has also worked with other distin-guished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast) and Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (Chess). His first new show for ten years, From Here To Eternity, with music by newcomer Stu-art Brayson, co-produced with Lee Menzies, directed by Tamara Harvey, and with book by Bill Oakes, opens in the West End at the Shaft-esbury Theatre in October 2013. He formed his own cricket team in 1973 and was President of the MCC in 2002. He recently wrote and presented a 52-part series for BBC Radio 2, American Pie, a trawl through the music and musicians of every American State. He has won several awards, mainly for the wrong thing or for simply turning up.

ETIQUETTE

1. Please arrive early. Latecomers may not be seated until intermission.

2. Take care of personal needs (drinks of water or restroom) before the performance begins.

3. Please silence or turn off all electronic devices, including cell phones, beepers, and watch alarms. We encourage you to share your experience at the Fox via social media, but please refrain from doing so or texting during performances; the glow from your device is distracting.

4. Most shows do not allow photography of any kind. Flash photography inside the theatre is never allowed as it is a distraction to those around you and a danger to the performers.

5. The overture is part of the performance. Please cease talking at this point.

6. Dear Lovebirds, when you lean your heads together, you block the view of the people behind you. Please consider the people that will be seated behind you when choosing whether or not to wear a hat or what hair style you choose.

7. Please refrain from talking, humming, or singing along with the show, except when encouraged to do so by the artist or show.

8. Please wait for an appropriate moment to dig something out of your pocket or bag.

9. Go easy with the perfume and cologne, many people are highly allergic.

10. If you need assistance during the show, please go to your nearest volunteer usher. If additional assistance is needed the usher will get the appropriate person to further help you.

11. Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress or before the actors have taken their final bows is discourteous. Wait until it is over and then exit with the rest of the audience.

THE INHABITANTS | With its enormous growth in recent years, Alpharetta is a mix of transplants and deeply rooted Georgians. Small farmhouses and little brick ranches coexist with shopping centers and subdivisions of large new houses. Always an affluent bedroom communi-ty, Alpharetta has also become home to several international corporations. In 1980 the popu-lation was 3,000. By 2006, it was 43,000 and, in 2012, almost 62,000. More than one-third of all residents are under age 35.

WHAT TO SEE | The Mansell House, a Victo-rian farmhouse dating to 1910 and surrounded by a small garden with statuary, is preserved in Wills Park near the center of town. It’s a popular spot for weddings. Wills Park also has an equestrian center and is surrounded by horse farms.

WHAT TO DO | If you’re into dirt-biking, drop by the DirtBike School run by the Motor-cycle Safety Foundation. It has an intermediate trails course, a female-only clinic, a two-day camp and all-terrain vehicle safety class. The newish Jekyll Brewing on Marconi Drive offers tours and beer samplings. The Walk of Mem-ories at American Legion Post 201 has 72,220 bricks, each with the name of a Georgian who

has served in the Armed Forces. You can also see a Huey helicopter and a 96-ton Korean War Abrams tank. Verizon Wireless Amphithe-atre, on 45 acres along Encore Parkway, hosts the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as well as pop, rock, country and Christian performers. Chukkar Farm offers acoustic music shows on its 173 acres from May to November.

WHERE TO SHOP | The retailer drawing the most out-of-towners to Alpharetta is the American Girl Boutique and Bistro in North Point Mall. Shoppers come for the popular dolls but can also dine there and have their doll’s hair styled. Main Street downtown has a mix of clothing stores (Lemon Drop Shoppe) and antiques and home interior shops (Snazzy Snoot, Ivy Interiors) housed in brick cottages. Queen of Hearts, a large antique mall, is on North Main Street.

WHERE TO EAT | Among the more than 200 restaurants here, you might want to check out Alpha Soda, a Haynes Bridge Road diner that dates to 1922. It serves traditional Southern food and breakfast all day. Smokejack on South Main Street serves award-winning barbecue. Vinny’s on Windward, a sibling of the Bistro VG in Roswell, salutes Vincent van Gogh. Ray’s at Killer Creek is considered one of the best steakhouses in the metro area.

Sit a bit and listen to some tunes during concerts at Chukker Farm.

WHAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW | If you die, you can be buried in a “green” ceme-tery not far from Alpharetta. Milton Fields Natural Burial Grounds is a 17-acre site where burials are done in natural shrouds or wooden caskets and no concrete vaults. Bodies are not embalmed. Flat stone markers can be used, but upright markers are not allowed. Green ceme-teries provide a way of caring for the dead with minimal environmental impact, the Green Burial Council says, Green cemeteries are rare, although the Monastery of the Holy Spirit has one on its property in Conyers.

HIDDEN GEM | The Big Creek Greenway winds along Big Creek, passing behind schools and high-rise housing. The concrete trail runs eight miles, paralleling North Point Parkway from Windward Parkway to Mansell Road. Walkers, runners, inline skaters and bicyclists use the trail. In addition, a mulch trail encircles wetlands where blue heron, deer, ducks and Canada geese can sometimes be glimpsed. A map with access points can be found on the city’s website or picked up at the Alpharetta Welcome Center.

TRE A FEW FACTS ABOUT

HISTORIC THEATERS:

★374 historic theaters have been built in Georgia at one time or another.

★114 of those were demolished between 1950 and today.

★262 historic theaters still exist in Georgia, according to FTI estimates. Of those,

only about 100 are still open and operating as theaters.

★Since its founding in 2009, FTI has helped to restore more than 10 historic theaters through its grant program.

★Atlanta’s Plaza Theatre and the President Theatre in Manchester were awarded FTI grants for 2013-14.

FOX FUN FACTS PRESERVING ARTS AND CULTURE ONE THEATER AT A TIME

Some of you may not know that, some 40 years ago, Atlanta residents rallied to save the Fox Theatre from demolition. As way of paying it forward the Fox created an outreach program in 2009, the Fox Theatre Institute, or FTI. Its goal: help preserve historic buildings, revitalize arts programs and strengthen local economies. FTI is the only theater-based organization around that focuses on the comprehensive preservation and operation of historic theaters.

The program provides guidance, advice and consultation to other theaters so that they, too, can create thriving arts programs in their own communities. For more information and to find out how to help, visit www.FoxTheatreInstitute.org.
