    Susan and Joe Aibinder

usan and Joe Aibinder moved to Sun Cityestival from Ridgeeld, Connecticut a year ago.usan grew up in Albany, New York and Joe hailsom Pittseld, Massachusetts. They met inaduate school and married in 1972.

oe worked in marketing for a number of largeompanies, most recently IBM and AT&T, beforeking early retirement and teaching high school

hysics. Susan was an insurance claims representative. They have a daughter, son-in-w and two grandsons in Maine, as well as a son in Connecticut.

the summer of 2011, Joe and Susan started looking for places to retire and began theirearch in suburban Albuquerque, where a sales representative at a Pulte developmentuggested that they visit the nearby Del Webb community. They immediately embracedis concept and came to the Phoenix area the following summer to look at communities.

un City Festival offered the best lifestyle; it was obvious even in July.

nce arriving they have kept busy. Both are members of the Players Club and are activeridge players. Joe is the coordinator of the chess group and teaches chess here. Susanas recently started a scrabble group. Joe is also teaching astronomy in the FestivalSU program and is the chess coach at Festival Foothills Elementary School. Susan hasined the Pottery & Ceramic Club and Desert Harmony. Last but not least, they loveking their golden retriever, Rowdy, to Mesquite Trail Park.

hey have begun to explore Phoenix and the surrounding area and have found everyone be very friendly. They promote the idea of 50+, and Sun City Festival in particular, tomily and friends in the Northeast. In fact, Susans sister and her husband came to visitst spring and were so impressed that they have moved here also. Susan and Joe lookrward to meeting more new friends as Sun City Festival continues to grow.

You are perusing the Sage Center Class schedule and you notice classes titledInterval Blast and Boot Camp. This can certainly appear intimidating to the

person who really doesnt understand the components and purposes of the class. Some people tend toshyaway from these types of classes due lack of under-

standing thinking they are just too much or too high intensity. These samepeople may be avoiding the weight room for the same reasons. Hopefully, this

    article will change your mind.

Research conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has

shown that high-intensity exercise specically heavy resistance, power trainingand high intensity interval training is safe for older adultsand can greatly im-

prove their functional strength for many activities of daily living.1 In other words, their research suggests that older adults can and shouldprogress tohigh-intensity strength and power training.

We lose about 5% of skeletal muscle mass per decade after age 40, with losses

greatly accelerating after age 65. For people over age 60, age-related lossof muscle power can occur approximately twice as quickly as loss of muscle

strength, suggesting that muscle power is a more critical variable in age-related

functional decline, which greatly increase the risk of falls.

Exercise programs (such as Interval Blast and Boot Camp) with appropriatelevels of strength and power training can provide numerous health benets and

can stimulate muscle growth even in the later years of life. In fact, a signicantbody of evidence suggests that high-intensity exercises can be more effective for

older adults than lower-intensity exercises. Further study also revealed thatalthough you achieved health benets when performing high intensity exercise

one or two times a week, the greatest increase in functional strength occurredwhen performed three times per week.

But what about risk of injury to older adults from this type of training? ACSMsresearch (and other studies) suggests that heavy resistance and power training

are safe for older adults when properly supervised. It is not appropriate to starthigh-intensity exercises if you have been inactive for years or if you have existing

medical concerns or limited experience with resistance training.

But once you learn proper movement mechanics during low intensity training, youcan then easily progress to the higher-intensity training.

The good news from all this research is that older adults can use power trainingto improve their functionality and ability to perform activities of daily living. So

get out there and get moving! What have you got to lose?
