THE CONSERVATORS OF ASHDOWN FOREST
This information is extracted from the full annual audited accounts and its purpose is to highlight visually the different segments of the Board’s Income and Expenditure for the year. To view a full set of these accounts please visit www.ashdownforest.org.
The General and HLS accounts both ended the year in surplus, both having benefited from a variety of different grants which were identified and obtained during the course of the year. These, together with charitable donations, make up a vital source of income. In additional, whilst not a huge contribution, there was a healthy increase in sales of Forest products.
As ever the bulk of costs are staff related. Administration overheads, which are largely associated with running the Forest Centre, were higher than is usual but this was because of some essential and desirable refurbishments that were possible because of the aforementioned grants. Operational expenses however benefitted from reduced fuel costs.
An exercise was undertaken to fully assess the costs of the High Level Stewardship programme as it draws to a conclusion, and in particular the Conservators’ Grazing scheme within this. This enabled the Conservators to ensure full and accurate allocations were taking place and understand the implications of choices made. This exercise proved useful and illuminating and will benefit future planning and improve financial management, both of which will be important for the Countryside Stewardship bid.

“I did the dawn chorus walk on 9th May. I just wanted to say how enjoyable I found it. The Volunteers who guided us were really helpful and friendly, please let them know they were appreciated.”
Bird Walk attendee, June 2015
“We had no idea what an extensive and valuable asset the Forest is within our Community, and it was so lovely to meet your staff who are obviously a really dedicated team.”
Peter Field, Lord‐Lieutenant of East Sussex, October 2014
“What you and your staff do for the Forest is greatly appreciated. I wish you and your team every success for the year ahead not least with the developments at the Forest Centre.”
Forest Commoner, May 2015
Comments and Feedback received for 2014‐15
Trip Advisor reviews
“Quite often I'll take my dogs up to the Ashdown forest and have a lovely relaxing walk. Once you get to know the routes it's very enjoyable with lovely views and great scenery. It's nice to just let you're worries disappear and enjoy the beauty of the countryside. Nice place to take children for picnics or just sit and relax. Would recommend coming here and seeing for yourself.” September 2014 “Vast area of forestry and heathland, excellent for walkers, anyone who appreciates the countryside and photographers. Well worth a visit is the current photographic exhibition in the visitor centre, by photographer David Higgs; I have never seen such a large collection of platinum/palladium prints on display in one location.“ November 2014 “Ashdown Forest is a gem with a variety of views and landscapes. There are numerous walks marked by footpaths. It's a huge area so would be covered only with repeated visits. Unfortunately the Information Office was closed when we arrived at the Forest Centre but we were able to help ourselves to a couple of leaflets describing waymarked walks…” November 2014 “The vast Ashdown Forest is always a joy to explore. We are lucky enough to live nearby so it's a regular haunt of ours. There are so many different places to park (for free) and start your walk for as long or as short as you wish.” January 2015
It’s brilliant!
