Office Hrs. 9a.m.—2p.m. 918.492.1353

During this Holy Week, one hymn has continually popped up in

my mind. Walking down the hall at church, it’s come out in hum-

ming before I even knew it. Since it’s Holy Week, do you have a

guess? Perhaps it’s something very formal, maybe Lift High the

Cross? Nope. How about one that is most assuredly for Easter; is it

He is Risen? What about this familiar tune, could it be In the Gar-

den? Sorry, not it either. While those are certainly familiar Easter-

related songs, the song that I can’t escape is For All the Saints.

For All the Saints remembers those who have died. We deal with the stark reality of death during

Holy Week. Good Friday reminds us of the isolation of Jesus and it is comforting to remember the

ways our faith is connected to others. My faith personally rests on the shoulders of every person

who has taught me about the faith: my grandfather, who prayed the same prayer before every

meal; the Sunday School teachers; Miss Jane, who lead children’s church, the woman who

seemed lighter than air and stronger than steel - her faith was that way too; the adults who

made it a priority to show up every week to youth group; the camp counselors who gave weeks

of their summers to the children and youth of the Disciples of Christ of Louisiana; the mentors,

some Reverends and some revered saints of those churches where I’ve served. Some of these

incredible people have gone on to the life that is next. Some of them continue to encourage,

inspire, and push me to trust and learn everyday more about God’s incredible love.

Just as one generation gives the gifts of faith to the next, every Holy Week and every Easter are

strengthened by the one before it and the one before that. Our collective experiences con-

tinue to grow to create the “blessed communion” we know as church. God redeems us through

the life of Jesus. Through remembering the Passion and the Resurrection, we create a continuity

with all Christians, everywhere, in this moment in time, the ages before us and all that comes

next.

The first verse of “For All the Saints” in the

Chalice Hymnal: For all the saints, who from

their labors rest, who thee by faith before the

world confessed, they name, O Jesus,

be forever blest. Alleluia, Alleluia!

We're About Ready to Start

Remember when we were "Raising the Roof for Habitat?" Well, we're ready to put a

house under that roof. The foundation slab of the new house has been poured. Construc-

tion will begin Saturday, April 6, at 8 a.m. as Tulsa area Disciple churches join employees of

the Newfield company, an energy exploration company based in Houston and Tulsa.

The first wall will go up about 9:30 at 4021 W. 54th Street in Tulsa. Heather Heflin and

her 10-year old daughter, Monique, are as excited as we are because they will become

the owners after helping build it.

The next step is for us to line up volunteers to help

on Saturdays April 6-June 29. No construction May 25

(Memorial Day weekend).

In addition to helping build the Heflin's new

house, each church and the Newfield company will

rotate providing coffee and donuts (for a morning

break) as well as lunch for the workers. So, if you are

unable to help with the construction, you could help

us provide food when our turn comes.

PLEASE SIGN-UP: It is critical for construction vol-

unteers to sign-up for the Saturday(s) you plan to help, because Habitat needs to know

ahead of time if additional workers will have to recruited. There is a sign-up sheet on the

bulletin board at Bethany. Indicate which Saturdays you can help. You can volunteer for

all day, or a half day.

This will be the seventh house that Tulsa area Disciples have built since 1996. It is lo-

cated two blocks west of the house we built in 2006 and near the house we built in 2008.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Those under 18 years must have a release signed

by a parent.

In case of threatening weather there will be a phone number to call to see if con-

struction will be underway that day.

A Musical Kaleidoscope

Join us at Fellowship Lutheran Church (68th & Sheridan) on April 12th at

7:00 PM, for a concert featuring Don Ryan, pianist. If you have never

heard Don play, you don't know what you're missing! The concert is free.

Donations will be accepted to support the music education program in

Guyana, South Africa.

Some of us are planning to eat dinner at KC Smokehouse Barbeque on 71st & Memorial

(next to Midfirst Bank) at 5:00 PM. Call Maria if interested at 918-810-9335.

A small flyer about the concert is available on the table in Fellowship Hall.

The Griggs Lectureship on Disciple History

April 7, 2013

4:00 p.m. at First Christian Church (DOC)

10th & Main, Tulsa, OK • www.fcctulsa.org

Speaker: Dr. Richard Hamm

“Disciples, Discoveries and Dreams"

Dr. Richard Hamm is Ministry Partner of The Columbia Partnership, an organization dedi-

cated to creating and cultivating a collaborative community of church leaders and

church champions.

Thinking about church growth and rejuvenation? Richard Hamm has a message you'll be

glad you heard. An author of three books on church leadership and vision, Hamm has

served as General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples) in the US and

Canada where he launched a nationwide initiative, "2020 Vision" which resulted in the es-

tablishment of 700 new congregations - and still growing.

As the former executive Director of Christian Churches Together in the USA and Vice Presi-

dent of the National Council of Churches, Hamm has a global vision for renewed growth

and relevance of Christian (Disciples) congregations in a world needing help with age-old

challenges.

Doing Together What We Can’t Do Alone

When Jesus calls us to “go into all the world” we wonder how can we do

that? By giving generously to our Easter offering is a step in the right direction.

Our special offering this Sunday will support our impressive cooperative work through the

General Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

For instance:

Global Ministries—in 2012 we supported 113 missionaries and interns serving in 38 countries;

Home Missions—in 2012 we helped more than 242 congregations in their search for a new

minister, as well as offering spiritually enriching experiences for children, youth, and adults;

Higher Education and Leadership Ministries—we currently foster fourteen colleges/universities

and 7 theological institutions which prepare leaders of the church for the 21st century;

And Much, Much more . . .

At Bethany, we do a lot to further the call of Jesus, but when we join hands with other

churches we do much, much more! Please be as generous as you can in giving to our

Easter offering.
