The Cheltenham Park Hotel on CirencesterRoad recently launched its ‘Sunday LunchCarvery’ – serving from 12.30-2.30pm. Wetook the family to sample what they had tooffer and were very impressed.

Firstly you have the chance to sit in theirbeautiful Lakeside Restaurant and look outover the golf course – it is light, spaciouswith pleasant background music, and notelevision on the wall – something you oftenget in a pub. The tables are elegantly laidand the staff are all extremely well trained, and very polite. Prices start from just £15per adult for 3 courses, and children under8 eat free – without doubt, this is excellentvalue for money!

The starters on offer when we went wereCream of Sweet Potato Soup, with bread, cheese twists and croutons, or you could optfor a selection of salads including tomato, potato, rice and pasta dishes.

Head chef Mr Sumit Chakrabarty thencarved the meat for us, which included beef, pork or turkey – a vegetarian option is alwaysavailable too. We then helped ourselves fromthe array of vegetables on offer including peas, carrots, sprouts with chestnuts, cauliflowercheese, parsnips, new and roast potatoes andall the trimmings – yorkshire puds, crackling, stuffing and sauces. It is all to easy to pile yourplate up, so I went steady as I had seen thedesserts!

The staff were very attentive and therestaurant manager Paulo Oliveira was busyoverseeing his team and making sureeveryone was happy with their food.

The choice of desserts were a fruit platterserved with a very refreshing fruity sauce, creme brulee, the most delicious chocolatebrownies, and the hot dish was applecrumble with cream or custard. We did ourbest to try them all between us and cameaway extremely satisfied. We hope you willbook up soon to enjoy the same wonderfulexperience!

Burma Avenue, remembering the longand arduous series of engagements inexpelling the conquering Japanese armyall the way from Mandalay to Rangoonduring the Second World War.

Finally Imjin Road. For many, thisname is the hardest to understand orrelate to. But in many ways it will alwaysbe the one honour which, above all, typifies the story of the Glorious Glosters.

Taking place in Korea in 1951, the 1stBattalion of the regiment, some 800 men

The Gloucestershire Regiment – Reservoir Camp, Gloucester – October 1952in strength, withstood the ferociousattacks of a whole Chinese army, losing620 killed, wounded or missing.

Completely out of ammunition andother vital supplies, 522 of the Glostersbecame prisoners of war. Fifty-nine hadbeen killed and a further 34 died incaptivity. Itʼs commanding officer,Lieutenant Colonel James Carne wasawarded the Victoria Cross, and thewhole regiment gained a United StatesPresidential Citation.

In the 1980s a municipal developmentof the land took place and the variousindividual roads were named from a longlist of battle honours gained over severalcenturies by the now extinctGloucestershire Regiment – previouslythe 28th and 61st Regiments of Foot.

Salamanca Road commemorates thepart played by the then 61st Regiment in1812 during the Peninsular War, inSpain, against France under NapoleonBonaparte. Ladysmith Road reminds usof the four Companies of men from the28th Foot which took part in the defenceof that town in Natal, South Africa, duringthe Boer War (1899-1902).

Next is Somme Road, named after theterrible series of battles in that area ofFrance between July and November1916, in which the Glosters played ahighly significant role. Alongside it is

As we age the skin becomes looser and can start to sag. One of theareas where this is most pronounced is the jawline, where ‘jowls’ canhang giving a loose appearance to the jaw area. Until now treat-ments to rejuvenate the jawline have been limited in effectiveness, with surgery being the last resort. The treatment lifts, firms and redefines contours and used in conjunction with a special skin firming serum, will enhance the overalleffect. The treatment is an excellent compliment to botox and fillers.as it tackles the lower face and neck area but equally suits clients whoare keen to pursue a needle free answer to younger skin.

Want to look and feel fantastic?

Tom Langton is a personable, polite young man witha determination to ‘stand on his own two feet’ bydriving his company Trident Training to success. As withany new business, Tom needs to convey his messageto potential customers – here’s what he has to say:“I’m local to Cheltenham, aged 22 and born in

Gloucestershire. A level 3 personal trainer, I found mypassion for health and fitness when I first started playingrugby at the age of 17 and fell in love with the feelingof being fit and healthy.“Having studied sport science in Cardiff I discoveredthat personal training was the right path for me. Istarted by designing exercise programmes using newtechniques learnt during my degree, then began tohelp my friends with their own training programmes.“Whilst coaching youngsters and fitness instructing ingyms, I met a largenumber of people whoweren’t enjoying the ‘gymexperience’ and wantedto train in a lesspressurised environment.I thought about how Icould overcome this anddecided that by becoming a mobile personal trainer, Icould bring the gym to the clients. Not only is thismethod good for those who just don’t like gyms – it’scost effective for people on a tight budget, and practicalfor individuals short of time but still wanting to get realresults from personal training!“The essence of Trident Training is to provideworkouts that are fun and functional. The majority ofpersonal training is focused on developing aesthetics, but I thought why not achieve a body that not onlylooks fantastic but moves fantastically too. With atailored exercise and nutrition programme, supportedby the correct motivational guidance, the results canbe astounding. A wide range of activities are available

– from boxing and aerobics, to circuit and plyometrictraining – and I can provide the tuition and equipmentto suit anyone.“The service is great for individuals or groups, couplesor teams – no number is too large or too small. Wecurrently have a group who train in a local park duringtheir lunch hour – its great because they are all friendswhich makes the training more fun.”

Tom is so confident you’llenjoy and feel the benefitfrom the Trident Trainingexperience, he’s offeringan introductory offer oftwo hours for free withno obligation to join. His service includes a free

client portfolio to keep, which will track progress, record achievements and provide information aboutnutrition, technique and exercises you can do on yourown between sessions. Tom is dedicated to gettingresults for clients for his own ‘job satisfaction’. He says:“I feel an enormous sense of achievement when I seemy clients look and feel better than they everimagined. We then know the hard work has beenworthwhile.”Tom will deliver his training services in a place to suit

you – at home, outdoors or any venue that suits youor your group. His prices are extremely competitive –particularly for a trainer willing to operate 24/7 – sowhy not give him a call and feel the benefit?

Amanda Wiltshire who runs The Haven on Cirencester Road al-ready offers a wonderful range of treatments but likes to keep upwith new and exciting experiences for her clients, which is whyshe has just trained to become a Hot Stone massage therapist. Now who would turn down the offer of trialling this treatment for

her 90 minutes of pampering – with heat as well! You are going to love this even more than me, as I needed to

talk to Amanda as she was working away to find out what she wasdoing/using at different times, and I also wanted to watch her tosee how she used the stones. I wasn’t going to waste the wholeexperience talking, so soon eased into my own little world, feel-ing so relaxed and warm.Hot stone massage is where the therapist uses smooth, heated

stones as an extension of their own hands, and also places themon the body while they massage other parts. The heat is so re-laxing and helps warm up muscles so the therapist can work moredeeply. The stones are basalt – a black volcanic rock that absorbs and

retains heat well – and have been smoothed by natural forces inthe river or sea, so not your pebbles from the beach! They areheated in a special bath of water.Amanda started by covering me with lovely thick towels and,

after placing a few stones down my back which kept me toastywarm, uncovered one leg and applied some warm oil first. Thenshe picked up a stone to warm her hands, puts the stone downagain, and started the massage, eventually using the stone in herhand as well. Initially it does feel quite hot, but she is moving thestones all the time so it doesn’t burn. When she finished mas-saging my leg she left the stones next to it to keep it warm beforemoving on to my other leg, feet, back and neck. I then turned onto my back for her to do the front of my legs and arms, then myface and neck, which was heaven. Amanda then goes back overeach arm and leg collecting up the stones as she goes. Just be-fore the end of the treatment, she used two cold marble stonesacross my brow then placed them carefully over my eyes – this isapparently to wake you up gently and say your time is up!I have to say this was the nicest massage I have had – I loved

the smooth feeling of the stones and the cozy feeling being en-cased in the towels, with the warm stones either on or next to m.As with anything like this, it all ends too quickly! Amanda will be offering either a 45 or 90 minute consultation.

Give her a call and get yourself booked in – she will explain whatyou get for each – you won’t regret it!

As Chairman of the thriving Old Patesians Rugby Juniorsection I am now starting to seek sponsorship for nextseason and rather cheekily using this article as a wayof reaching out to anyone that would consider havinga conversation with me during the next few months. This season has seen some very generous donations

and money used to finance playing/training kit for theplayers. They have looked very professional and reallyappreciated the support. As we grow bigger and bigger, the strain on

resources always has to be a consideration and I amkeen to get ahead of the game by continuallyproviding top quality resources for our young players. Our aim is to keep the players and volunteer coachesmotivated and inspired to constantly commit theirtime, energy and enthusiasm. The Old Pats is a fantastic resource in Cheltenham,

High quality nursing and dementia care for older people

Page 35: April 2013

I had the pleasure of being invited to see the new carecentre in Windsor Street, Cheltenham, which opensearly in May and will offer high quality nursing anddementia care for older people. Part of The Orders ofSt John Care Trust, externally it still looked like abuilding site, but once inside I could see it ‘taking shape’.

General manager Nickola Pritchard (pictured right) and twoof her colleagues showed me a typical room with en-suite thenwalked me round the rest of the place explaining what wasgoing on in each area.

I’ve experienced having to put my grandparents into homeswhich was not a pleasant thing to do. One suffering fromdementia and the other needed residential care, andeventually nursing care. I was not impressed with the way theywere just left to ‘do their own thing’ most of the time.

Passionate about their workHowever, I was very impressed with Nickola who is a

qualified mental health nurse. She has worked in care for 20years, with 13 years in delivering specialist dementia care, andhas managed dementia care homes since 2006. Nickola andher colleagues certainly knew their stuff and were verypassionate about their work. They only want well trained andexperienced staff to work at Windsor Street – they are, andwill still be recruiting as the number of residents increases.

Nickola’s approach to quality care is to understand theindividual – firstly their past, and then ‘where they are now’.She explained about the centre’s Activities Co-ordinator who,by finding out these things about their residents, can organisedays out or events to suit their tastes, or just do somethingdifferent and fun.

In other Orders of St John Care Trust homes, residents havebeen ice-skating, trampolining, and participate in keep fit classesand music activities. Then there is a library, a hairdresser anda residents’ kitchen where guests are encouraged to bakecakes, prepare meals and do washing up – just as if they wereat home – with the carers or their relatives. Nickola says thisactually enables residents and relatives to reconnect with eachother on a personal, meaningful level – even if only for a briefmoment. It also encourages and assists people to fulfil, as bestas they can, a quality of life and not a pure existence.

The interior has been created with special consideration todementia needs. There are intimate rooms available(so families don’t have to visit their relative alone theirbedroom), distraction areas and finger food stations whereresidents can just help themselves to fruit or snacks wheneverthey like. The doors are ‘colour coded’ so, for instance, all thetoilet doors will be the same colour. All very clever.

There will be a fully landscaped, secure garden, andarrangement with Gloucestershire County Council forprovision of allotment sites for the local community.

Crème de la crèmeNickola’s vision is for Windsor Street to be the realisation of

what she deems quality care for older people living withdementia should be – a ‘trend setter’, the crème de la crèmeof dementia care for older people. She wants the place to bea home for the residents, not a hospital – an approachable, friendly environment for both relatives and residents whereholistic care is a given.

The home’s Information Centre is now open between10am-3pm Monday-Friday so, if you’d like to see how thingsare shaping up for yourself, call 07818 575428 to make anappointment. I was so taken by the place, I can’t wait to goback and see the finished article. What a pity my relatives didn’tget this wonderful opportunity.

Fancy an awning?New Blinds has been in Leckhampton for four years, but owner NickiCook (pictured) has 16 years’ experience in the blinds, awnings andshutters industry. The company’s success is largely down to Nicki findingthe right suppliers offering great quality products at the right price – shesays: “value for money is so important”.

Who doesn’t look forward to enjoying the first rays of sunshine inSpring? However, as temperatures slowly rise, protection against the sunbecomes equally welcome, so we aksed Nicki about her awnings:

“An awning can provide the required comfort depending on it’s qualityand any additional features it may have. So that you can enjoy your awningfor as long as possible, it is important to be wellinformed prior to making your purchase.

“Our main supplier of awnings is Germanmanufacturer Markilux who have been makingsure life on the balcony or patio is made evenmore enjoyable for over 25 years. Their positionas a market leader is due to their expertise inproducing superb attractive sun shades.

“Things to consider would be the quality ofmaterials used – they endure heavy strain during extension and retractionand also need to withstand the occasional gust of wind. Awning mechanicsthat operate smoothly and are highly durable are also very important..

“The material and colour should be selected so they intergrateharmoniously into the style of the house. Engineered polyester fabrics giveshade with an intense luminosity and are exceptionally weatherproof, UVresistant and even have a self cleaning effect in the rain.”

New Blinds have Markilux awnings on display in their showroom (detailsopposite). If you’re considering improving your home in this way, whynot pop in and see these fantastic looking, great quality awnings – and tapinto Nicki’s wealth of experience at the same time.

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2ClearWindows. The company which specialises inrepairing windows which are steamed up,broken or damaged by replacing the panes –not the frames has grown rapidly ashomeowners take advantage of their services.Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all

about service: “Our product is simple. If yourdouble glazing is misted up we can replace theglass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, inany type of frame, and with a new 5 yearguarantee. But it’s not just about saving people

money, although that obviously helps. “Manytradespeople have struggled since last year and Ihonestly feel that during the good times a minorityperhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much asthey should have done. We make sure we turn upwhen we say we will, do the job the customerrequires and leave their house as clean as a whistle.I often get comments back from customers onhow they really didn’t expect that sort of servicewhich, in a way, is very sad for the service industryas a whole.”Cloudy2Clear service the Gloucester,

Cheltenham, Stroud & Tewkesbury areas and Paulis finding that his approach is a major factor in hissuccess.“The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but alsoit makes good business sense. I get a huge amountof business from friends and family of people I’vedone work for, which just goes to show howmuch a little bit of effort is appreciated.”So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or

damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on0800 61 21 118.

Hurray it is now proper spring! Let’s hope the weather realisesand gives us some lovely vitamin D sunshine after what hasbeen a very long, wet winter.

The garden centre is full of small plug plants in all sorts ofenticing colours and buying bedding plants as plugs is a verygood way to do it. However don’t just ‘bung’ them in thegarden – they are used to a frost free environment in thenursery and will need to be kept in a cold greenhouse orconservatory for another 3 or so weeks to acclimatise them, and to make sure that they won’t be zapped by the frost(which still can come in April).

This could be a good time to buy winter flowering trees andshrubs whose price may be reduced in garden centres – givingyou a good show next winter. This is also a good time to plantevergreens into well prepared soil with a balanced fertiliseradded. Make sure you keep them well watered during thesummer if it is dry (we can but hope!). A good tip that I use isto put some of the gel granules that one uses in hanging basketsinto the hole, mixed in with the soil, and this holds onto thewater in dry spells.

Start feeding your strawberries, raspberries etc. now as theywill be flowering soon. A balanced fertiliser like Gromore orblood, fish and bone will promote successful flower and fruitproduction, good foliage and strong roots. Apply about 70gper sq metre.

Begin feeding the lawn in April when growth starts again.Apply a proprietary spring/summer lawn fertiliser in twoapplications. It should be high in nitrogen to encourage thegrass to grow nice and green. If you need to apply a weedkilleron the grass, apply it two or three weeks later when everythingis growing strongly. Don’t mow for two or three days afterapplying, and if you have mown don’t apply weedkiller for twoor three days. Don’t compost the clippings which have beentreated with weedkiller. However, I personally don’t mindseeing a lawn containing daisies and other flowers, and life iseasier if you learn to love them!

As always if you fancy a change in your garden, be it just areplanted border or a complete garden design do contact meby mobile or email (details below), or visit my website. Makethis year a special one for your garden!

Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

A good mate of mine sells Hot Tubs for a living. He says that he doesnʼt sell enough of them andkeeps trying to persuade me to buy one. Iʼveresisted so far, but it got me thinking. If I had somespare cash, what would I spend it on?In my early years I was a saver rather than a

spender. It served Mrs D and me well, especiallyas it gave us enough money to put down as adeposit on our first property. Not something thatthose in their early twenties, as we were then, findit easy to do these days.As the years have gone by, I have become

happier to be more of a spender. The ʻyou canʼttake it with youʼ or ʻyou donʼt know whatʼs justaround the cornerʼ brigade make a decent case. So, on the assumption that it wonʼt be a Hot Tub,what would I spend it on?A holiday is the call in my ear from Mrs D. Why

not? Relaxation, education, culture, sun andmore. But the money has gone and what do youhave to show for it? And is it really relaxation withmobile communications as they are these days?My eldest boy would have me buy a dog. No

chance! A dog is for life and all that – Iʼm afraidI wouldnʼt give it the commitment needed. A newcar? I keep my cars for ages, so thereʼs nolikelihood of that.Mind you itʼs all theoretical anyway. And if I did

have some money to ʻburnʼ, maybe my mateʼsidea is not a bad one after all.

What would youspend it on?

Have you seen them? It’s not often that I devote an entirecolumn to one crime but given that I amreferring to the recent attempted serioussexual assault in Benhall, I am sure youwill understand.I know everyone in the community hasbeen shocked by the horrendous attackon a woman by a man near the bridgenext to Robert Burns Avenue at about6.40pm on Monday 18th February. To remind you of his description, he isbelieved to be white, around 5ft 10install, wearing a dark balaclava, “slightlybaggy” mid-denim jeans and a bluehooded top with two side pockets and azip all the way down the middle. Thehooded top is believed to have beendirty, possibly muddy, in the lower half.Thankfully members of the publicstepped in to stop the man, restoringsome faith in human nature in theaftermath of such a heinous act, andreminding us all of the strength of thiscommunity. That is what I am calling onnow, because the detectives in charge ofthe investigation still need your help.No one has been charged with thiscrime and we are very eager forinformation from people who may haveseen the man in the area or recognisethe people we have featured in the twoe-fit images displayed above. One resident has reported seeing the

man shown in the first e-fit image by abridge close to the scene of the attack ataround 5.30pm. A jogger who wasrunning along Bibury Road towardsSwanswell Drive saw the man in thesecond image at around 6.45pm. It isbelieved the man was coming from theDraycot Road area.He is described as white, 5ft 8ins tall,of average build, in his mid 20s to mid30s and with an angular face. He was

wearing a grey or blue hoodie with thehood up over his head. He was walkingwith his hands in his pockets.Do you recognise the man in eitherimage? If so, please call us straight away. They could be the same person, but weare keeping an open mind at present.Equally important – one of thewitnesses saw that there were two otherrunners heading towards her from thedirection of Swanswell Drive. We wouldlike to identify these runners to establishif they saw this man, or anyone else whocould be of interest. Are you a localjogger? Do you recall seeing anything thatnight? Our detectives also want to hear fromanyone with private CCTV that mayhave covered the day of the assault.Even if you are not sure what you haveto say will help, please call us anyway andlet us decide. The number to dial is 101– just say that you are referring toincident 393 of 18th February. If youwant to stay anonymous you can bycalling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.My officers are continuing to makereassurance visits in the area and I wouldurge anyone with concerns to makecontact with an officer – call us via the101 number or email address below.Personal safety advice can be foundonline at www.gloucestershire.police.uk.

From theword go I have received sound advice and Icontinue to be impressed by the way that she andher whole team work seamlessly together on thevarious activities involved in letting my properties.Teaming up with Northwood was definitely agood move!” Mrs A Cheltenham
