My brothers and sisters in Christ,
Each year, we are given the opportunity to greet the Glorious Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the most important date of our Liturgical year: Pascha. From the Greek word for “Passover,” Pascha signifies the time when Christ resurrected Himself from the dead, having been three days in the tomb. Our spiritual lives revolve around this important event because this is when Christ destroys the power of the devil and abolishes the finality of death. In Christ, all humans are given the opportunity to enter into eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. In Christ, all humans are given the opportunity for spiritual renewal.
This year, our community has had the opportunity to read the book Christ in our Midst: Spiritual Renewal in the Orthodox Church by Fr. Theodore Stylianopoulos. This book has been a blessing for everyone who has read it because it offers a understanding of what spiritual renewal actually is and why it’s important for every Orthodox Christian to focus on this renewal. I would like to share with all of you some reflections on this text and on spiritual renewal.
The Promise of RenewalOur Heavenly Father was not satisfied to be separated from His creation after Adam and Eve transgressed against Him. God established a plan for salvation, a plan that involved sending His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to restore fallen mankind. From the moment Adam and Eve sinned against God, He promised the coming of the Messiah (Genesis 3:15).
The Good News of Jesus ChristHuman beings are renewed by the grace of God and through the birth, life, crucifixion, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. “The Christian good news is not that we can change ourselves by human endeavors but that the risen Christ can transform us by His grace - which is God’s redeeming love in action” (Christ in our Midst, pg. 29).
The season of Great and Holy Lent is a season dedicated to setting aside time in our personal lives so we can focus on our spiritual lives. Spiritual renewal is necessary for all Christians. We need to focus on our relationship with God, and we need to focus on our relationship with each other. The mark of true spiritual renewal is when we can fulfill the two greatest commandments: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 22:37-40).

From the Desk of Fr. Matthew
I want to first thank all the volunteers who mobilized quickly to answer the call on the Metropolis’s effort to support those in need as a result of the financial crisis in Greece. Under the leadership of Spiro Macris and Emanuel Koklanaris, GOYA, AHEPA, Parish Council, Philoptochos and many of our church members, there have been scores of both medical and baby kits made up. These kits were shipped to Florida which represents the central collection point for the Metropolis. We far exceed our initial goal of 25 kits. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported this effort.
We just wrapped up a wonderful March 25th Greek Independence day celebration. I know that everyone who was there was moved by the children in their poems, songs and dancing. Also a thank you to Rick Reynolds for his heart felt talk on the impact of Hellenism to the world. Finally, I would like to thank the Hellenic culture and Hellenic School for organizing and guiding this event.
Finally, as everyone receives this newsletter, the parish council would like to invite all of our parishioners and their families to our upcoming Holy Week services. This is a very special time in our church as we gather to worship together during our Lord’s Passion and Resurrection. These are some of the most moving services in our Orthodox church. As we head to Pascha, we would also extend the invitation to our Pascha picnic at Hugh MacRae Park. As in other years, we will hold our Agape service at the park, shelter 6, and directly after the conclusion we will have our picnic. The church will supply the lamb as we invite everyone to bring a covered dish. Don’t forget to bring items for the outdoors as the park offers plenty to do. Of course, there will be plenty of fellowship with one another.
May we all have a wonderful Anastasi!In Christ’s service,Manny

Outreach & EvangelismJim Stasios
We will be well into Great Lent and approaching Holy Week by the time you receive this month’s newsletter. On Wednesday evenings during Great Lent we have been holding Pre-Sanctified Liturgies followed by a Lenten covered-dish meal and discussion on the “Parables of the Kingdom” led by Father Matthew. In addition on Fr. Matthew’s recommendation, we have been studying Christ in Our Midst...Spiritual Renewal in the Orthodox Church by Theodore Stylianopoulos. Rick Reynolds has helped lead our discussions on Wednesday evenings. If you were not able to attend any of these study groups this year, we encourage you to try and attend next year during Great Lent.
During Great Lent the Church encourages us to increase our prayer life, attend additional worship services, read Scripture, Fast and give alms to the poor. Please consider taking upon yourself to visit or call a family member or friend that you haven’t seen at church lately, visiting the sick, homebound or those in nursing homes; welcoming visitors at church that are new to our Parish and helping the less fortunate in our community.
We are looking for volunteers that would be interested in helping with our hospitality ministry. This would include cooking an occasional meal for parishioners that have recently had a baby, have had a recent hospital stay or have lost a family member. If you would like to volunteer to help, please contact Daphne Snow in the Parish Office.
The Orthodox Church will observe the Saturday ofLazarus on April 7th and Palm Sunday on April 8th. Holy Week begins that evening with the Bridegroom Service. We will have an opportunity to worship each evening during Holy Week and a few day-time services. Please consult other sections of this newsletter for times of those services.
Outreach & Evangelism, continued
Holy and Great Pascha will be celebrated at our midnight services on April 14th-15th. We pray that you will attend as many church services as you can during Holy Week and Pascha.
Lastly, we would like to ask you to “Save the Date”: April 28th. This will be the date of the March of Dimes “March for Babies” walk at Legion Stadium on Carolina Beach Road. Please join Team St. Nicholas! The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. Everyday, thousands of babies are born too soon, too small and often very sick. Our Team will be walking in the “March for Babies” because we want to do something to help improve these outcomes. We know that you care, too. That’s why we’re asking you to join us April 28th at Legion Stadium. Registration starts at 9 AM. If you can’t walk with us, please help by donating to our Team. You can do so on our web page page, http://www.marchforbabies.org/team/StNicholas or by speaking with Katerina Katsikis or Sia Mayorga Gibbs.
We wish you and your families a spiritually uplifting Holy Week and Pascha.
Everything we do is an opportunity for Outreach and Evangelism!

Catechism CornerCourtney Malahias
I hope everyone is enjoying our glorious weather and a blessed Pascha season! Spring is my favorite time because I always feel anew, fresh and tons more energy to put myself out there and be a 'doer'. There are not many Catechism classes left so I hope we all commit to bringing our children to church as much as we possibly can. I know times are busy, but we only have one chance to surround and enrich our children with our beautiful Orthodox faith.
In April we only have two Catechism classes - on the 22nd and the 29th. In May, our last class is on the 13th. The festival is the weekend of the 18th and our graduation will take place on June 10th.
I look forward to seeing all of your children's smiling faces!

On behalf of the Hellenic Culture, Special Activities Committee, we would like to thank all who attended or participated in the Inter-Cultural Festival which was held at UNCW on Saturday, February 18, 2012.
Hellenic Culture, continued
Our wonderful St. Nicholas Romiosini Dancers performed exceptionally and everyone present enjoyed their program very much. Their new dance costumes hand-sewn by Nota Dukas were outstanding this year and really added much to their presentation. We are all very proud of them in representing our St. Nicholas Church in such an outstanding manner.
We would also like to thank the members of the Culture Committee who participated in setting up our booth at the festival and worked tirelessly. As usual, our booth attracted much attention from all who attended the festivities and were complimentary of our booth. Our thanks to Kitsa Wiersteiner, Ministry Chair and to her staff and helpers, Dr. Emmanuel and Lambra Koklonaris, Lola and Mike Loizides, Nick Syrpis, Sam Wiersteiner and Helen Flowers who assisted in setting up our booth and manned it. We had many compliments from attendees who stopped by our booth during the day. We would also like to thank Kathy Dimopoulos who prepared our circulars/flyers for this event. Our appreciation to all who took part in coordinating this year’s festivities and look forward to next year’s event.

On Saturday, March 3rd, 2012, our Hellenic School and local AHEPA Chapter #408 sponsored an educational as well as entertaining trip to the NC Arts Museum in Raleigh. There were 37 participants including both youth and adults. Our Hellenic School covered thelunch cost for all the youth as well as the bus fees for all the Hellenic School parents while our AHEPA chapter provided for the bus fees of all the youth. From the feedback we received from our participants, it was a great day trip and everyone had a marvelous time.Among others, we had the opportunity to visit theHellenic & Roman exhibition that helped all of us broaden our horizons and expand our vision of how

Hellenism has served as a foundation of western civilization. We further believe that the children especially will long remember this day since, aside from the educational experience, they also had a lot of fun playing in the park around the museum and even Greek dancing inside the bus on our way back to Wilmington! We would like to thank all the families and individuals that joined our trip, our local AHEPA Chapter for their support and contributions to this great event and especially Spiro Macris for all the special arrangements that he made with the Arts Museum for our group. We are looking forward to our next day trip!
Furthermore, on Friday, March 17th, 2012, our Hellenic School families prepared and delivered the first 12 infant kits in response to our Metropolitan of Atlanta His Eminence Alexios’s Relief Kits for Greece appeal. We would like to thank our families that assisted with and contributed to this effort!
We wish you and your families “ΔΥΝΑΜΗ” (strength) as we approach to the Holy Week and “ΚΑΛΟ ΠΑΣΧΑ” (a great Pascha)!
Pan-Ikarian Brotherhood
Chapter Therma would like to thank everyone who came out to ring in the New Year with us during our New Years Celebration. Good Food, Good Time was had by all.
We also want to thank the St. Nicholas community for supporting our Prime Rib luncheon held in February. It was a great success and we thank everyone.
Pan-Ikarian Brotherhood, continued
We invite everyone to join us on Labor Day weekend in Myrtle Beach August 30th - September 3rd as we celebrate the 109th National Pan-Ikarian Brotherhood of America Convention. Chapter Therma has been selected to be the host city for this event. Everyone is invited to join us for the weekend and celebrate Ikarian style! We also ask that you consider placing a business or family ad in the Convention Album Adbook to help support our efforts. Please contact Evangelos Fragos, Sophia Tracy or Kay Skandalakis for further information and forms. Please visit our website at www.ikariotiko2012.com. We look forward to seeing you there.
Greek FestivalNick Saffo, Dr. David Snow
Our Greek Festival this year will take place on May 18, 19 and 20, 2012. Our Chairmen are Nick Saffo and David Snow, and they have been busy starting preparations for this year’s fest.
We need all your help to make this event successful. Please consider taking a program ad form and approach people you do business with for an ad. Consider your hair stylist, banker, restaurant, dry cleaner, lawyer, physician, dentist, florist, gym, club membership, etc. The Greek Festival ad book is a great way to support our Greek Festival as well as get recognized by the thousands who attend our festival.
Ads begin at $100 and you get about half the money back in meal and admission tickets. This year we are encouraging our business partners to offer a discount on services within their ad. This way our festival patrons will hold on to their ad book and use the discount coupons throughout the year. Please see Debbie Rallis or Irene Vogiatzis for more information. Thank you for your continued support. See page 14 for more info.

Spring is just around the corner, so let’s celebrate God’s creation by playing outside at Hugh McRae Park in Wilmington, NC. Park at either Shelter 4 or Shelter 5 next to the Small Children’s Playground. (Enter from the College Road entrance, take your first left and the play area is on your left.)
Just in case it rains we will play somewhere else. Let’s go to the Chick-Fil-A on 3389 Oleander Drive in the Hanover Center. This way if it stops raining we are a hop, skip, and jump away from the park.
