It’s hard to believe we are nearly a full quarter of the way through 2012! The year has already proven to be full of excitement with many growth opportunities for the business community. The State Legislature has passed Economic Development Incentives that will provide certain tax incentives to companies that create jobs in Florida and lower the cost of doing business in the state. It has also created a “One-Stop-Shop” that streamlines Florida’s permitting process with an online portal and reduces some of the state’s more burdensome regulations. In addition, Florida Governor Rick Scott recently signed a critical unemployment compensation bill that will help Florida’s employers put nearly $550 million back into our economy, spurring job creation and economic growth.
Locally, the same five City Council members will continue to serve our city with Councilman Anthony Majhess winning re-election and Councilwoman Constance Scott returning without opposition. These five elected leaders will face the challenging task of balancing a budget with reducing revenues and increasing costs - the same thing businesses have been dealing with. Let's hope there is enough will and leadership to move forward on critical issues like annexation and the creation of a downtown development director, which will increase revenue and enhance the overall economy of our community. While the city does their job to create the infrastructure - both physically and regulatory - to attract and retain business to support overall economic development, our strategic partners - the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County (BDB) and the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Palm Beach County (CVB) - are doing a great job as both tourism and economic development activity are up over last year.
Crisscrossing business resources and capabilities is a key avenue in which to build the economic strength of our area. We recently conducted a CEO Roundtable for our students in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA) that included Dr. Kevin Ross, the President of Lynn University; Jerry Fedele, President and CEO of Boca Raton Regional Hospital; and Kelly Smallridge, the President of the Business Development Board. It’s that sort of interconnected educational and relationship-based effort
that will help continue to elevate Boca’s appeal and stature in the state and on a national level.
The Boca Chamber is celebrating our 60th year of operations by returning to a fundamental and founding principle of the Chamber dating all the way back to 1952 – the strength of the business community is dependent on the strength of the business leaders that serve it. In addition to the great leaders that serve the Chamber Board, the Chamber’s Golden Bell Education Foundation Board and the Chamber’s BLU-PAC Board, we are excited to recognize three additional leaders at
next month’s Business Awards Luncheon. I hope to see you there! "Buy Chamber" is the perfect way to ensure a sustainable local economy and strong membership. Your fellow Chamber members represent a wide array of goods, services, talents, and expertise. And remember, your best resource to find what you need for your business success is, of course, www.bocaratonchamber.com. To cultivate our area’s strength and retain our standing as a stellar community, the Chamber has sought to open our
programmatic offerings to a wider range of business professionals and community residents. Our quarterly themed EXPOs are now free to attend as are many of our educational opportunities, including the newly created technology and healthcare initiatives, as well as our recent Social Media Tech Forum at Florida Atlantic University and our acclaimed From How to Wow program. The Chamber has also launched a series of Community Conversations, aimed at engaging business leaders and local residents in topics and issues that are critical to our community’s future. And, since we all enjoy this beautiful place in which we live, work, learn and play, the Chamber held our 1st Annual Community Cookout at the YMCA of South Palm Beach County – and everyone had a fantastic time. Check out the next page for some pictures.
As always, thank you for your support of the Boca Chamber!

Don’t underestimate the need to satisfy and retain customers. Most businesses put too much money, time, and effort into chasing new customers/prospects and far too little resources trying to keep their current ones. However, we all know that you can’t fill up a bucket if you don’t plug the current leaks. Real profits and stable revenue streams come from long-term relationships and repeat business with your current loyal, profitable customers. Some experts declare that 80% of a company’s future growth comes from existing clients, if served and cultivated properly. As such, customer satisfaction and retention should be your #1 marketing priority.
Again, the purpose of a business is to attract and retain customers. You can’t grow and remain in business without keeping the customers you currently have. First, you must measure your current attrition rate (loss of customers) and set a goal for dramatically reducing this rate. For example, let’s say, on average, that you lose 20% of your customers every year. A realistic goal would be to reduce this attrition rate to 10% per year. Bottom line, it is easier and nearly eight times cheaper to serve and retain current clients/customers than to pursue new ones.
Once you have plugged the holes in your attrition bucket, you want to serve better and get closer to these profitable and worthy customers. You want to better understand their needs and then fulfill as many of these needs as
possible with additional products and services. Continually communicate with your customers. Give them value. Give them solutions. Focus on them and their needs, not on your products/services.
Communicate with them in person, in letters, in emails, via your website, brief newsletters, etc. Don’t worry; you can’t over-communicate with your customers. Remember, your best customers are your competition’s preferred prospects.Like employees, keep them informed, involved, and inspired to continue doing business with you. Also, repeatedly ask your customers the following questions: • “Howarewedoing?”• “Whatotherneedsdoyouhave?”and• “Howcouldweimproveourvaluetoyou?”
Your objective is to provide them with more value more frequently and as a result, you will benefit with more profits. Never sell a customer only once. Real profits come from repeat business. As such, set goals to increase the frequency and size of repeat business. You want ongoing relationships and ongoing sales.

Business 101Your CONNECTION
to good business!
Think about the last few hires that didn't work out. On paper, applicants may possess the education, work experience and skills for the job, but polished resumes may not reveal hidden liabilities. Poor hiring decisions often mean lost production time, money, and a decrease in employee morale -- all costly mistakes for any employer. Key cost factors: • Costtoadvertise • Costofrecruiting • Salaryorunrecoverabledraw • Insuranceandbenefits • Employertaxcontribution • CostoftrainingprogramsAnd, if the wrong people are hired, what is the cost of: • Lostsales • Missedopportunities • Dissatisfiedcustomers • Lowemployeemorale • Re-startingthehiringprocess Employment liability Without a proper screening and selection process in place, employers are also faced with the risk of hiring a person who may pose a legitimate threat or risk to the safety and security of the company/employees. “Negligent hiring” is a term used by the courts
when an employer hires an individual without conducting a proper investigation of that person's history, and later it's discovered that the employee's background contains something that would indicate a propensity for misconduct on the job.
make Your selections Carefully Utilize a comprehensive hiring system that includes phone screening, structured interviews, candidate evaluation methods and ancillary services such as thorough background checking. Maybe most significant, the system should include highly accurate, validated, online employment testing and assessment tools that can be correlated to positions ranging from executive leaders to sales representatives to semi-skilled, technical, administrative and basic entry level jobs. Aptitudes and personality dimensions parameters can be evaluated and applied to specific jobs, work environments, and company values. Why not take advantage of the hiring and selectiontoolsandtechnology, availabletoyou?
There are many ways to improve your hiring process and much more to consider regarding the benefits of doing so.

The logos were designed, thanks to Mike Arsenault, Graphic Design Chair at Digital Media Arts College, who volunteered the time and effort to make the students’ ideas into reality.
DMAC is an accredited digital arts school that offers hands-on, individualized instruction from experienced industry professionals in a low faculty-to-student ratio setting. For more information about Digital Media Arts College please visit www.dmac.edu/request-info.
The Boca Chamber's YEA! is a groundbreaking program that takes students between the ages of 11 and 18 through the process of starting and launching a real business or social movement over the course of an academic year. By the end of the class, students own and operate fully-formed and functioning businesses, which may be carried over after their graduation from the program. YEA! aims at teaching students at an early age how to make a job, not just take a job.

SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY!Why Shop Local? Locally-owned businesses build strong neighborhoods, link neighbors and contribute to local causes. When you shop at local
businesses, you are continuing a cycle of economic development directly related to our community; the money you spend keeps our stores open, our neighbors employed, and our business owners invested in the community. Shop at locally- owned stores, restaurants and businesses, and support
our community. Boca Raton is OUR town, so let’s keep the money local! This public service advertisement courtesy of Investments Limited and The Boca Raton Tribune

meet Kim Knapp skin Apeel Day spa
1. How long have you been in business? Skin Apeel Day Spa celebrates 20 years this October; however, I have happily specialized in the industry for 32 years.
2. What is the main goal of your business? To restore beauty and health with escapes from reality. We are devoted to exceptional guest treatment! Our doors open daily as a holistic haven to balance needs and wants with solution specific results. “Me time” is vital for longevity and well being. Our nurturing environment combined with the element of touch reaches the core to awaken beauty from the inside out.
3. Who inspired you to go into business?I was not inspired by someone but something … the lack of customer service environments. Having worked in the beauty industry for twelve years prior to opening Skin Apeel, I was continually disappointed with guest conditions and service which in itself prompted my overnight transition from service provider to entrepreneur. 4. What are the two greatest advantages of doing business in Boca raton / being a member of the Boca Chamber?1) The opportunity to be an active supportive member of our community 2) The joy of nurturing new friendships and partner alliances. I love SWIB and look forward to each event for connection and awareness.
5. Where should I go to find out more? skin Apeel Day spawww.skinapeel.com
