Transcript of April 2011 Torch
1. Why does Easter come so late this year (April 24)?
Blame it on the moon -- actually, the full moon. Unlike
Christmas, Easter occurs at different times because the date
of Easter each year is set based on an ancient formula. In
325 A.D., the Council of Nicaea (ni-SEE-a) declared that
Easter shall be celebrated on the first Sunday after the first
full moon which appears on or after the vernal equinox.
Vernal relates to spring. Equinox is the time twice
a year (spring and fall) when the sun crosses the equator,
and day and night are of approximately equal length every-
where on earth. The vernal equinox occurs March 21, so
Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and
April 25. Therefore, this year Easter will be the second
latest date possible. (FYI, in 2012 Easter will be April 8.)
2. On March 15, the Church Council unanimously
approved a motion brought jointly by the Trustees and the
Building and Finance Committees that we proceed with a
capital campaign for Phase I (and to pursue Phase II) of our
building project.
Phase I – Install an elevator with 5 different stops to reach
every floor in our building; add a Sunday School class-
room; and add storage space. Estimated cost: $250,000.
Phase II – Install a canopy out back to provide a covered
area for passengers to load and unload from their vehicles.
It will be high enough that a fire truck and the church bus
can drive under it. Estimated cost: $60,000.
To get started, we need to raise 20% of the cost of
Phase I. One-fifth of $250,000 is $50,000, and $30,000 (in
round numbers) is already in the Building Fund, so when
$20,000 more is added to the Building Fund we can break
ground. The estimated construction timeline is 6 months,
depending on the weather. So if the Building Fund reaches
$50,000 in the near future, the new elevator, S.S. room, and
storage space could be ready by Christmas!
To finance this, Building and Finance Committee
Chairperson B.J. Broyles is proposing a 2-year capital cam-
paign, with donations and pledges above and beyond our

current commitments to the General Fund. We do not want
to ―rob Peter to pay Paul‖ with this project. An elevator is
needed to make our entire facilities handicap accessible, but
ministries to people should not be reduced just so we can
improve our property.
If enough donations and pledges come in that we
can pursue Phase II at the same time as Phase I, then we will
do so. Otherwise, we will focus on completing Phase I and
then deal with the canopy after that.
3. Romans 5:8 contains the gospel in just four words:
―Christ died for us.‖
Christ died — historical fact.
For us — theological significance.
May resurrection hope give you peace and joy this Easter.
Blessings,
Pastor David

Featured in the UMW Library is the true story enti-
tled “Here If You Need Me”. This was written by
Kate Braestrup, a chaplain for search-and-rescue
missions in Maine. It is a story about finding God
by helping others and offers proof of the miracles
that happen every day when a heart is grateful and
life and love are restored.
On a personal note, I just finished reading this book
and it is uplifting and enjoyable reading. I highly
recommend it. Be sure to check it out!

Easter Remembrances
Instead of ordering a number of lilies
for individuals to take home, this year we
will adorn the altar for Easter Sunday
with an arrangement in memory or honor
of our friends and loved ones.
Please give as you are able.
All proceeds will go to the Worship Com-
mittee/Altar Guild for future projects.
Thank you for your participation in
making our church beautiful this time of
year, as we prepare our hearts for the
Celebration of the Resurrection.
