PRESIDENT’S REPORT By Tom DiGiacomo

“A neighbor says his motivation is seeing life as an adventure. He loves the challenge, the hunger, the adrenaline and the sense of accomplishment. Having the sense of living life to the hilt, without restraint, and loving every minute of it.

Each of us is motivated by a combination of these factors. In order to be successful in using our people skills, we need to understand what motivates us and the people we surround ourselves with.

We also need to be aware of elements that can kill off our motivation. It’s important to understand the fragile nature of human desire. It’s powerful, but it can also be derailed by rejection or discouragement. It’s in relationships with other people that motivation either grows or is mortally wounded.

When things aren’t going right in our l ives, sometimes we have a tendency to retreat from relationships and go into a solitary mode. This can be hazardous. We have to be careful not to pull away from relationships that motivate us. Pulling away is easy to do when things aren’t going right

and you don’t feel like you are winning. You want to hide out until things get better. But hiding out doesn’t work. What’s worse, it can kill off the very relationships that keep us going.

Withdrawal from people is common these days. But it creates serious problems: loneliness, depression and even physical symptoms come up as a result of isolation. People are important. You’re not nearly as strong on your own as you are when you’ve got people supporting you. You need people to help you stay on track and live by the principles you believe in.

We’re living in a time when a lot of folks are isolated emotionally. People move from house to house, city to city. Many don’t even know their neighbors. This is why we strive to have a Neighborhood Watch Program. Our program has been going strong since 1990. We

reach out to neighbors to join us at our monthly Neighborhood Watch Meeting and invite them to be involved in our National Night Out Fun Night.

Mark your calendars now!National Night Out is

August 3, 2010 this year.

Surround yourself with positive, powerful , excit ing people and feast on their energy and enthusiasm. A good place you can find these people is the Woodmore Oaks Neighborhood Watch Program. Come join us; we would love to have you!

Until next month remember, “Coming together is a beginning, Keeping together is progress, Working together is Success!”

TAKE CRIMEPREVENTION WITH YOU TO WORKWhen you go to work, don’t leave your crime preven-tion sense at home. Almost any crime that can happen at home or in your neigh-borhood, can happen in the workplace. But common-sense prevention skills can help make life at work safer for all.

• Keep your purse, wallet, keys, or other valuable items with you at all times or locked in a drawer or closet.

• Check the identity of any strangers who are in your office -- ask whom they are visiting and if you can help them find that person. If this makes you uncomfortable, inform security or manage-ment about your suspicions.

• Always let someone know where you’ll be -- whether it’s coming in late, working late, going to the photocopi-er or mail room, going out to lunch or a meeting.

• Report any broken or flick-ering lights, dimly lit corri-dors, doors that don’t lock properly, or broken windows. Don’t wait for someone else to do it.

• Be discreet. Don’t advertise your social life or vacation plans and those of your co-workers to people visiting or calling your place of work.

THE SMART ROUTE TO BICYCLE SAFETY

Riding a bicycle is more than just basic transportation. It can be a fun and exciting hobby. When your children ride, remember that they’re not alone. They share the road with cars, trucks, pe-destrians, and other cyclists. Here are some tips to help make your children’s ride a safe one.

•aSelect a helmet that has a snug, but comfortable fit.

•aMake sure children wear proper clothing. Clothing should be light in color and close fitting to avoid being caught in the bicycle’s mov-ing parts.

•aTeach children to obey the rules of the road includ-ing all traffic signs, signals, and road markings.

•aAlways ride on the right side of the street in single file. Use proper hand sig-nals and never grab onto moving vehicles.

•aWalk your bike across busy streets at corners or crosswalks.

•aBikes should display both front and rear reflectors. Ride only in familiar areas and only during the daylight hours.

CRIME TRENDBrass Backflow Devices Being Stolen

It has come to the attention of the Citrus Heights Police Department that a significant number of brass backflow de-vices are stolen monthly.

A backflow device is a brass plumbing fixture common in both residential and commer-cial properties. This device connects to the city wide water main and provides both a con-nection and pressure regula-tion.

Commonly, these devices are obscured by a “green blanket” or other cover. Often these devices are located to the rear or sides of a property and away from public traffic flow and view. This device is made entirely of brass and is desired for its recycle resale value.

Unfortunately, many of these thefts are not reported to the police department. It is pos-sible that an average business owner or resident has seen this as a water district issue versus a crime issue.

The theft of brass backflow de-vices has been determined to be a common crime or interest and continued problem with other area agencies.

Due to the weight and chal-lenge of removing these de-vices, it is likely these thefts involve one ore more persons and a vehicle. Thefts are oc-curring mostly at night* but they have occurred during daylight hours too.

* Based on unofficial reports from technicians and employees at the

Citrus Heights Water District.

About Brass Backflow Devices. Information Pro-vided by the Citrus Heights Water District.

There are over 800 back-flow devices in Citrus Heights alone.

Commercial properties, businesses, schools and parks may have multiple devices.

These units are made by a variety of manufactures and are valued at approximately $250. Additional fixtures or attachments (also made of brass) may add another $100-$200 dollars in value.

A replacement unit installed by a qualified contractor or licensed plumber may cost in excess of $1000.

The nearest brass recycling center is “Sims Group” in Rancho Cordova.

RECOMMENDATIONS

• Locate and familiarize your-self with the backflow device located on your property. A familiar yet often overlooked “green blanket” is a tip.

• Note the make, model and serial number and secure this information with other relevant records.

• Secure any backflow de-vices with a lockable cage or other device to prevent theft or damage. The Citrus Heights Water District can make recommendations.

• Note any and all suspi-cious activity and report all information to your respect-ed Police Department.
