For most of Bermuda’s 400 years, artistic expressions were manifested, mostly in the craft arts. The traditional crafts, however, were confined to skills that could match available materials. Since Bermuda is such a small island, natural resources are limited, indeed, for us, historically, this meant, basically, wood, stone and the fiber arts. In time silver would join that trio, thanks to Spanish and French shipwrecks carrying cargoes of precious metals. Ceramics and glass arts were not then a consideration, as there was only a limited amount of local clays and no suitable sand for making glass. It is only in recent times that ceramics has been able to flourish. With modern methods of transport and ease of importation, clay and glazes are now easily available.

Today, Bermuda Clayworks is the primary centre for the ceramic arts in Bermuda. Founded in the early 1990’s at Springfield in Somerset, it moved to its present location in Dockyard in 1997. It is the workplace or outlet for a number of ceramicists, including its founder, Jon Faulkner, but also others, including Carlos Dowling, Rachael Furbert, Aubrey Hardi, Monika Landy, Suzie Lowe and Helle Puuk. The business is owned and managed by Sundée Faulkner, who, in addition to being a practicing ceramicists, is also an enthusiastic promoter of this craft in Bermuda. Recently, there was a very successful traveling ceramic exhibition from Great Britain, that took place at the Bermuda Society of Arts and the Kaleidoscope Arts Foundation and this was largely because of the Sundée Faulkner’s hard work and promotion. Interestingly, the Bermudian potters who exhibited along with the “Brits”, held up very well against their overseas counterparts.

I suppose it fair to say that Bermuda Clayworks is, largely, a production pottery, but it does also handle the work of Jon Faulkner, who now has his own studio pottery. Bermuda clayworks produces a number pf ceramic products, including house signs, but also cups, mugs, bowls and so-forth. Jon Faulkner now that he has moved into studio ceramics, is making some wonderful raku pieces and salt glaze items. Altogether, this is a quality enterprise. If you are looking for your typical tourist kitsch, such as pink Bermuda cottages or palm trees, this is not the place to look.

If you are concerned about environmental issues and recycling, you

Housed in the beautiful Botanical Gardens in Paget, five minutes from Hamilton, the new museum is in itself a work of art. To learn about Bermuda’s culture and history there is no better stop on your vacation itinerary than the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art!

Gallery owner Colin (Dusty) Hind has developed an extraordinarily close relationship with the artists, many of who now work exclusively on commissions for the Gallery. Mr. Hind visits Zimbabwe up to three times a year, personally helping to source, quarry and truck stone to the artists’ workshops where the sculptors set about making hard, beautiful Zimbabwean stone such as springstone, butter jade and serpentine, live and breathe. The Gallery teems with handsome tribal chiefs, elaborately braided women, prowling leopards, and intricate herds of antelopes and elephant. The pieces can weigh up to 400 lbs but the Gallery can ship pieces all over the world at reasonable cost. Each piece has already travelled more than 8,000 miles, packed in custom boxes, made by the Gallery’s experienced staff in Zimbabwe. The Gallery will repack, fully insure and ship within days of purchase. Remember that original works of art are duty-free into the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Smaller pieces up to about 25 lbs can be taken as accompanying baggage.

MasTerwOrks MuseuM OF berMuda arTs 441 236-2950, www.bermudamasterworks.com Set in the Botanical Gardens, Bermuda’s first ever purpose built museum houses a collection of over 1,000 pieces of Bermuda inspired art. Renowned artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Winslow Homer and Albert Gleizes are part of the permanent collection, and there are continuously evolving shows of local artists on display. Masterworks Foundation was started 21 years ago with just a few paintings, and has grown to the collection we see today. In March 2008, after five years of construction, the new Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art was opened to the public. The museum presents an impressive new facility for educational purposes for all Bermudians, as well as providing

an exciting new destination for visitors to the island. On display in the Butterfield Family Gallery from June 20th through to the end of the year is “We Are Sailing”, an exhibition featuring approximately 45 works, ranging in date from 1793 to the present. This is a special exhibition exploring Bermuda’s bond with the sea and the wide-ranging effects of the island’s unique seascape, topography, and light on the many artists who experienced them. The exhibition includes works by a diversity of artists, including Albert Gleizes, Marsden Hartley, Winslow Homer, and Malcolm Morley. The exhibition coincides with the mid-June arrival of the fleet of tall ships participating in the Atlantic Challenge 2009, a race, last held in 2000, that circumnavigates the Atlantic Ocean. Admission: Members and children under 12 FREE, non members $5 Enquiries: Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, tel 441 236-2950, email [email protected], or www.bermudamasterworks.com

of the Month …

This corner shop opened in this very same location in 1895 by John A.P. Pitt. John opened Chatham House by selling glassware, furniture and tobacco products with his son, one employee and a horse. The horse & carriage had the responsibility of delivering all the products island wide.

In the early 1900’s, Chatham House expanded the business to include the introduction of selling Cuban cigars. A first for Bermuda.

In 1935, Jack Pitt took over the family business. A new building was built and Chatham House remained on the corner of Front Street & Burnaby Hill. At the time, the building was considered very modern. Today, Chatham House is described as quite a quaint shop and a landmark.

The cigar store remains much the same in appearance as back when it all started. Rustic looking with the original wooden cabinets are still in place. Some of the stock has gradually changes over the years with the introduction of Bermuda Island gifts and one of the largest selections of candy in Bermuda.

The fine cigars that we are selling today may very well be collector’s items of tomorrow. Our Cuban cigars that we have on hand will be the last of the “Fidel Castro Era.” These hand-made cigars will be much sought after for years to come. The highest standard of the fine “ Habanos.” Cuban cigars

will most likely not be available until after the US embargo ends. It is speculated that the quality will drop in order for Cuba to mass produce the cigars for the US market.

At present, Charles Pitt is at the helm and one of the keys of his successful shop is the professional, personable staff. This highly successful family run shop will continue to flourish and entice customers locally and around the world. Come by and experience what Chatham House is all about.

april is The MasTers

The Masters traditionally marks the start of golf season in the United States as well as the first of golf ’s four Major Championships. The tournament started in 1934 was originally called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament. The name “Masters” wasn’t adopted until 1939. Bobby Jones originally felt the name “Masters” was a bit forward, but eventually gave in to partner Cliff Roberts and we have recognized the event by that name ever since. The tournament was first televised in 1956 featuring the final three holes and was shown to the world for the first time in 1967. John Derr of CBS Sports is a personal friend and tells of his involvement broadcasting the tournament by radio beginning in 1935. John covered 62 of the first 66 events. He had made friends with Cliff Roberts, Bobby Jones and his personality suited Augusta Office Manager Helen Harris. Derr explained to Roberts, CBS interest in televising the event. Roberts dictated a letter to NBC stating that they would have 60 days to consummate a deal. The letter was misaddressed to Derr and while he questioned if he should forward the letter, he wondered if they would do the same. Instead he waited a bit of time and then called Roberts who explained that he hadn’t heard from NBC and Derr negotiated the deal for CBS. Well the rest is history as they say. One of the most recognizable trophies in golf is the “Green Jacket” presented to the winner of the Masters. The green jacket was first worn by the membership of Augusta National in 1937 as Roberts felt patrons should be able to identify members should they need information. The color was identified as “Masters Green” with Masters Buttons and the Augusta logo added to the left chest. Why green was selected as the color of the jacket is still a mystery. We can all admit that if we saw anyone walking around in a green jacket other than during Masters Week, we would definitely believe that person was fashion challenged. However I can assure you that since Sam Snead became the first Champion to adorn the jacket in 1949, those following fell in love with the color green. The Masters will identify the first Major Champion, who then qualifies for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf to be held in Bermuda at the Port Royal Golf Club October, 2010. Last year’s winner Angel Cabrera will defend his title in Augusta against a formidable group of golfers that may or may not include Tiger Woods. Current odds makers are including Woods in their pre-tournament wagering as a 4 – 1 favorite. Other notables include Michelson at 6 – 1, Harrington at 16 – 1 and Steve Stricker, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood at 20 – 1. No matter the winner, The Masters will attract golf aficionados around the world to CBS on April 7th – 11th. I’ll pull the clubs out, clean the grips, put a new edge on my grooves and get ready for the new season. I hope you will do the same and this year, take a kid with you to the course. Golf is a game for a lifetime; why not get someone started early.

The tour highlights such areas as Lagoon Park, The Royal Naval Cemetery, the Clock Tower Building, Somerset Village, Bermuda Maritime Museum and so much more.

The rOyal naVal dOckyard, Ireland Island, Sandys Work began on this massive complex in 1809, not long after the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars and just before the War of 1812. Envisioned as a strategic British military outpost that would make Bermuda the “Gibraltar of the West,” the Royal Naval Dockyard was built by slave and convict labour. The Dockyard locked its gates in 1951. Since then, the seventy-five acre site has been painstakingly renovated to accommodate museums, a movie theatre, restaurants, The Arts Centre and the Bermuda Craft Market.

berMuda MariTiMe MuseuM, Ireland Island, Sandys Located in the Keep of the Royal Naval Dockyard, this museum has become one of the island’s most frequently visited destinations since being opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1975. Exhibits chronicle Bermuda’s association with the Royal Navy and its own interesting maritime history.

Dining in Bermuda is an experience on its own. Imagine that you’re at one of Bermuda’s pink beaches savoring a local delicacy, the Bermuda fishcake sandwich. If you would like to experience what Bermudians love, then you would order the works. An old-timer once told me that Bermudians invented “the works.” Even if that statement isn’t accurate, the Bermuda fish sandwich with the works is like nothing I have experienced before.

Local and internationally recognized chefs create a dining adventure that will take your taste buds to a new level. Wines and spirits from around the world will be matched to perfection with each course. Go back in time; several restaurants date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. The globe is represented in the restaurants that dot Bermuda and it’s easy to locate a restaurant close to the ocean, with views that will inspire all your senses.

bOlerO brasserie95 Front Street, Hamilton, Bermuda, 441 [email protected] In just over two and half years since Jonny opened Bolero, it has become a favourite place for locals, business people and visitors alike and is arguably one of the most popular and busiest restaurants in Hamilton.In keeping with the concept of a traditional Brasserie, Bolero is about simplicity, the food is straightforward, honest and unpretentious. Bolero’s entrance is like a secret, it’s tucked away down Bermuda House lane just off Front Street and as many of their regular customers put it;

per and seal on a hot grill or shallow pan with a little olive oil for about a minute on either side. Put to one side and leave it to rest for 10 minutes. Place the saute mushrooms and saute spinach leaves in the middle of the pastry sheet and place the duck liver pate on top. Then place the beef ten-derloin on top of the pate and completely wrap the ingredients in the puff pastry, trimming away any excess pastry with a sharp knife. ensure the beef end is on the bottom of a non stick tray and brush the top of the pastry with the beaten egg yolk. You can leave the wellington in a refridgerator for about twenty minutes to rest before placing in o hot oven 450 degrees farenheit for twenty minutes. This leaves the beef at medium to medium rare. Leave the beef wellington in for a little longer at a lower temperature should you require the beef to be more well done. Serve with a rich beef gravy and some Bermuda honey glazed carrots for the perfect meal and enjoy.

bOne Fish bar & grill 6 Dockyard Terrace, Royal Naval Dockyard, 441 234-5151This dynamic restaurateur captivates his customers with his enthusiasm for life and his work in particular. Chef Livio’s new venture in Dockyard has inspired him to create his menu with an emphasis on cuisine that he feels suits the island’s lifestyle. “I like to make the most of our fresh fish and local produce,” he told us, “natural, simple, fast and balanced dishes because, like Italian cuisine, this is best suited to my abilities.” He proudly told us “seafood, seafood, the best from Bermuda waters, but with my love of the style of Mediterranean cooking, there is something for everyone, including favorite recipes from my mother!” Chef Livio began his training at age eleven in a hotel in his village home of Cortina D’Ampezzo in Italy where he was born and raised. He proudly relates how he has cooked for famous people such as President Carter, Michael Douglas, David Bowie, Iman and even the President of Italy. “I always chose to work in an environment of a very high standard, alongside many respected head chefs”, thus he trained and worked in some of Italy’s most prestigious hotels and restaurants….always remembering that to be the best chef meant “your heart was in your hands!” Today Chef Livio prides himself on maintaining this rule so, with very few exceptions, everything on his menu is made in his kitchen. He emphasizes that he likes to ‘create’ what his customers want, then acknowledges that this

should be the role of a true chef, one who has been trained by the best. The happy atmosphere in his lively restaurant is enhanced by the fun music, the wonderful indoor/outdoor bar and dining, and of course the views of the waterfront. “When my customers see their food, I want them to say, “Wow! The plate looks so beautiful and enticing,” he said smiling. It is not unusual to see Chef Livio chatting with the diners in his restaurant. Ask to meet him…we know he would love to meet you! He will give you an evening to remember!

This symbolic ceremony involving his Excellency, the Governor, will have the Premier of Bermuda, Mayor of St. George and distinguished Cabinet Ministers in attendance. The Governor, on behalf of the Government of Bermuda, accepts the annual rent of one peppercorn from Bermuda’s oldest Masonic Lodge which has occupied The Old State House as its headquarters since 1815. Peppercorn rents were customary British rents from the 17th century onwards which ensured that there was some form of rent obligations the tenant paid to the landlord. spring has sprung As the first rays of spring cascade over the hills blooming with Belladonna lilies you know it’s time to leap into action with your spring menu ideas. So put away those cast iron casserole pans, freeze the turkeys, set the roasts out of the way and change even your music from heavy classical to lighter contemporary. It’s time to take advantage of this fleeting culinary moment by improvising with a handful of recipes that reflect the colors and flavors of this gorgeous, seasonal in-between.
