Who will be the clever member to decipher

the riddle this month? The first person to

respond with the correct answer will receive a

free lunch at our next Branch Meeting.

Email your answer to Sundae Knight at

[email protected].

The king hires an engineer is to build a bridge

in only 12 straight days. In return for his work,

king will pay him a bar of gold. The engineer

requires a daily payment of 1/12th of the bar

of gold. What and where are the fewest

number of cuts to the bar of gold that will

allow the king to pay his engineer 1/12th each

day?

Last month‟s winner Bryan Zoller of PBS&J

holds the current record for a correct answer

in only 19 minutes after publication! So may

the fastest calculator cowboy or cowgirl win!

The Math ACES Awards…speakers needed!

BRAINTEASERS…How smart are you???

The Math ACES competition was created

in 1996 to encourage and reward

excellence in mathematics. The Math

ACES competition is offered to any

interested public or private high school in

Sarasota and Manatee Counties. It is

named after its major financial contributor,

the SunCoast Branch of the American

Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

Additional sponsors who fund the award

are: The Manatee Community College

Foundation, the Education Foundation of

Sarasota County, the Sarasota Council of

Teachers of Mathematics, and the

Manatee Council of Teachers of

Mathematics.

The Manatee Community College

Mathematics Department writes, grades,

and administers the exam. The student in

each public school who achieves the

highest score is awarded $100 and a

plaque while one award is given to the

private high school student from each

county who has the highest score for their

respective county. The exam is made up

of questions ranging from a broad category

of topics taught in area high schools. The

topics Statistics, Geometry, Algebra II,

Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and the AB

syllabus of Calculus. This year the

competition took place on Thursday, March

12, 2009.

Each year since 1996, ASCE SunCoast

Branch members have been presenting as

many of the awards as possible during the

senior awards ceremony held at each

school during May and June. We are

again asking for your help in promulgating

these awards. Please contact Mike Elfers

at 941-747-2981 or

[email protected] to volunteer.

This is a great way to get our name and

profession some recognition in the

community. Please help out.

2009 ASCE Report Card Available Online!

The Report Card is an assessment by

professional engineers of the nation's status

in 15 categories of infrastructure. In 2009, all

signs point to an infrastructure that is poorly

maintained, unable to meet current and

future demands, and in some cases, unsafe.

Since the last Report Card in 2005, the

grades have not improved. ASCE estimates

the nation still stands at a D average.

Deteriorating conditions and inflation have

added hundreds of billions to the total cost of

repairs and needed upgrades. ASCE's

current estimate is $2.2 trillion, up from $1.6

trillion in 2005. ASCE has released their

recommended „Principles for Infrastructure

Stimulus Investment‟ designed to help guide

lawmakers and the Obama administration

when allocating economic stimulus funding for

infrastructure projects poised to aid in

rebuilding the nation‟s economy.

You can help by taking action and contacting

your legislator at

http://capwiz.com/ascereportcard/home/ .

Send an email to your elected officials and tell

them to pass important legislation that you

can follow online.

Attention all golfers! Swing into the spring golf season by

participating in this year’s ASCE Suncoast Branch Charity

Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament, which marks

the 14th time the event has taken place, will be played at

one of North Port, Florida’s finest golf courses, Bobcat

Trail. The event will be held on Friday May 15, 2009, and

the first tee shots will be taken at 1:30 pm.

The round will be played over 18 holes followed by a

dinner and awards ceremony. Groups of four players will

constitute each individual team, and the format of the

tournament will be a scramble.

This will be a great opportunity for local engineering,

contracting, and other related businesses to come

together and support a great cause. The proceeds of our

golf tournament help to fund outreach activities aimed to

stimulate math and science related academics in high

schools and colleges, as well as creative bridge building

contests. Sponsorships are a great way to join in the

effort of motivating our youth to become more

passionate about the academic world, and help to

facilitate an event where people can join together.

54th Science and Engineering Fair of Florida

April 15-17, 2009 Lakeland FL

The Chair for the ASCE Florida Section Science

and Engineering Fair is Adnan Javed. Adnan can

be reached at [email protected]. The 2009 State

Science and Engineering Fair is fast approaching.

ASCE Florida Section will be sponsoring the

Outstanding Engineering Project in both the

Middle School and High School Categories at the

54th Science and Engineering Fair of Florida.

This is the State level event of all the regional

winners. Details available at

http://www.floridassef.net/

The judging for the event is to be held on April

16th, 2009 at the Lakeland Center. Online

registration for the judging is open. Please click

on http://www.fffs.ucf.edu/judges/user/Home.aspx

to register to be a judge for the ASCE Florida

Section Award.

In spite of all the educational budget cuts, we are

happy to say that the Science and Engineering

Fair competitions in our Districts and Regions and

the State are being continued this year!

We are seeking more than 400 Judges in all

areas of science to interview the talented

students of Florida on their scientific research

projects for 2009. We hope that you and your

organization will provide the time and expertise

we need to provide high-quality face-to-face

judging for this prestigious competition – the

largest academic competition in the state of

Florida.

We have two levels of competition – middle

school students in grades 6 – 8 and our high

school students in grades 9 – 12. These

students have already won at their Regional

Fairs throughout the state of Florida. There are

14 categories to choose from. The descriptions

of these categories may be found at

http://www.floridassef.net/forms/2009forms/SSE

F%20Categories.09.pdf . Please register to join

us on Thursday, April 16th, 2009 from 8:30 AM

until 5:00 PM for Judging. This will be an

experience you will never forget as you

interview students demonstrating outstanding

innovation and creativity – soon to be part of

our future workforce.

If you know of any other contacts for Judging,

please forward this and/or send me the

information at [email protected]. Thank

you and I look forward to seeing you April 16th

at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland, Florida.
