President‟s Message from Adnan Javed, P.E.
Simultaneously a group of dedicated branch members took it upon themselves to help us compile a long lost history of our branch officers. So if you have served as a SunCoast branch officer in the past, please contact me so we can update our database. Moreover, we recently launched a Facebook page for our SunCoast community. Go check it out on www.facebook.com to sign up and show your support for your favorite branch. For those of you who will be taking the P.E. exam in October 2009 and April 2010, the SunCoast Branch will once again be holding the P.E. review sessions beginning in August. Please contact me at 941-315-0194 or [email protected], if you want to teach a 2 hours class on topics covered in P.E. exam. The instructors are recognized for their dedication to the profession with a certificate of appreciation. You can use it to earn PDHs for the renewal of your PE license. We will post more information about the venue and the class schedules in the forthcoming months. Surprisingly, a recent poll of our readers revealed that many young members are interested in activities to get their blood pumping. This month’s newsletter gives you a scoop and contact information for several of the local activities. In addition, we ask of you to let us know of your group that meets regularly for sports or miscellaneous fun activities, so we can let your fellow members know where to go. Besides our monthly meetings, to provide our members with an informal venue to network, your branch intends to host an icebreaker in the first two weeks of Independence (July) month. Shoot us an email with ideas and suggestions. Please note, when we ask for your ideas and help, it’s only because we value your suggestion and your branch is constantly seeking for ways to provide the best to you, as we are committed to your success! Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone at our next branch meeting on April 23rd.
Best Regards, Adnan Javed
On Behalf of SunCoast Branch – Happy Earth Day
and Easter greetings fellow members!
First, I want to thank our members who took time to
send in their nominations for 2009 annual branch
awards. Your participation is highly appreciated!
Secondly, planning is well underway for our 14th
Annual Charity Golf Tournament scheduled for Friday
afternoon on May 15th at North Port’s 4-1/2 star rated
semi-private golf club, Bobcat Trail. We need both
players and sponsors for this year’s charity event.
Please remember your sponsorship of this event is
paramount to continuing our engineering outreach and
education program to the local community. We are
also seeking golf tournament volunteers to help us run
the event. Do not hesitate to contact us for more
information. Thanks and be sure to make it to this
years' ASCE Charity Golf Tournament. It will be an
event you do not want to miss!
I am very proud to share our branch’s
accomplishments with you, as we continue to make
headways with our community outreach program. We
have received 16 scholarship applications this year,
an all-time record high by far. There are 3
applications for the high school scholarship, and 13 for
the Civil Engineering scholarship. As part of our
outreach efforts, we are looking for a few good ASCE
members for some public speaking and to represent
our profession in presenting the 13th annual 'Math
ACES' award at one (or more) of 13 local high schools
within the next few weeks. Please contact Mike Elfers,
Chair Math ACES at 747-2971 or
[email protected] to volunteer. This story
cannot be complete without the honorable mention of
our branch’s first time participation in '54th Science
and Engineering Fair of Florida' from April 15-17 2009
in Lakeland.
In a continuing effort to commemorate branch’s 25th anniversary, we are currently in the process of revamping our SunCoast website, so please take a moment to send us your ideas or suggestions.

Who will be the clever member to decipher
the riddle this month? The first person to
respond with the correct answer will receive a
free lunch at our next Branch Meeting.
Email your answer to Sundae Knight at
The king hires an engineer is to build a bridge
in only 12 straight days. In return for his work,
king will pay him a bar of gold. The engineer
requires a daily payment of 1/12th of the bar
of gold. What and where are the fewest
number of cuts to the bar of gold that will
allow the king to pay his engineer 1/12th each
day?
Last month‟s winner Bryan Zoller of PBS&J
holds the current record for a correct answer
in only 19 minutes after publication! So may
the fastest calculator cowboy or cowgirl win!
The Math ACES Awards…speakers needed!
BRAINTEASERS…How smart are you???
The Math ACES competition was created
in 1996 to encourage and reward
excellence in mathematics. The Math
ACES competition is offered to any
interested public or private high school in
Sarasota and Manatee Counties. It is
named after its major financial contributor,
the SunCoast Branch of the American
Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
Additional sponsors who fund the award
are: The Manatee Community College
Foundation, the Education Foundation of
Sarasota County, the Sarasota Council of
Teachers of Mathematics, and the
Manatee Council of Teachers of
Mathematics.
The Manatee Community College
Mathematics Department writes, grades,
and administers the exam. The student in
each public school who achieves the
highest score is awarded $100 and a
plaque while one award is given to the
private high school student from each
county who has the highest score for their
respective county. The exam is made up
of questions ranging from a broad category
of topics taught in area high schools. The
topics Statistics, Geometry, Algebra II,
Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and the AB
syllabus of Calculus. This year the
competition took place on Thursday, March
12, 2009.
Each year since 1996, ASCE SunCoast
Branch members have been presenting as
many of the awards as possible during the
senior awards ceremony held at each
school during May and June. We are
again asking for your help in promulgating
these awards. Please contact Mike Elfers
at 941-747-2981 or
[email protected] to volunteer.
This is a great way to get our name and
profession some recognition in the
community. Please help out.

2009 ASCE Report Card Available Online!
The Report Card is an assessment by
professional engineers of the nation's status
in 15 categories of infrastructure. In 2009, all
signs point to an infrastructure that is poorly
maintained, unable to meet current and
future demands, and in some cases, unsafe.
Since the last Report Card in 2005, the
grades have not improved. ASCE estimates
the nation still stands at a D average.
Deteriorating conditions and inflation have
added hundreds of billions to the total cost of
repairs and needed upgrades. ASCE's
current estimate is $2.2 trillion, up from $1.6
trillion in 2005. ASCE has released their
recommended „Principles for Infrastructure
Stimulus Investment‟ designed to help guide
lawmakers and the Obama administration
when allocating economic stimulus funding for
infrastructure projects poised to aid in
rebuilding the nation‟s economy.
You can help by taking action and contacting

Attention all golfers! Swing into the spring golf season by
participating in this year’s ASCE Suncoast Branch Charity
Golf Tournament. This year’s tournament, which marks
the 14th time the event has taken place, will be played at
one of North Port, Florida’s finest golf courses, Bobcat
Trail. The event will be held on Friday May 15, 2009, and
the first tee shots will be taken at 1:30 pm.
The round will be played over 18 holes followed by a
dinner and awards ceremony. Groups of four players will
constitute each individual team, and the format of the
tournament will be a scramble.
This will be a great opportunity for local engineering,
contracting, and other related businesses to come
together and support a great cause. The proceeds of our
golf tournament help to fund outreach activities aimed to
stimulate math and science related academics in high
schools and colleges, as well as creative bridge building
contests. Sponsorships are a great way to join in the
effort of motivating our youth to become more
passionate about the academic world, and help to
facilitate an event where people can join together.
