Employees who work at the Best Places to Work in Lincoln have a strong sense of teamwork and loyalty and understand their role in making the company they work for successful, according to the 2014 survey results.
“ey are always thinking about ways to do their job better,” said Jason Lauritsen, director of Best Places to Work at Quantum Work-place in Omaha, which administered the survey. “ey are really engaged in work and how to do work better.”
Quantum Workplace administered the survey to 6,000 employees in Lincoln in January.
Some 90 companies were nominated, ranging in size from 10 em-ployees to 1,300 employees. Employees answered 40 scaled ques-tions, which asked them to rank statements from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Employees also answered open-ended questions and demographic questions about tenure, position and age.
e questionnaire, called the Quantum Workplace employee en-gagement survey, measures ten categories such as team eective-ness, trust in senior leaders, feeling valued, manager eectiveness, compensation and benets.
e survey winners were chosen based entirely on employee re-sponses.
Some statements employees were asked to rank, included: “It would take a lot to get me to leave this organization,” and “ere is open and honest communication between employees and managers.”
Companies that dierentiate themselves have leaders who pay at-tention to the workplace and the experiences employees are having and have a compelling vision for the future, Lauritsen said.
And, “ey work hard to help employees align their individual goals with the organization’s vision for the future,” Lauritsen said.
Lauritsen said companies that do well in similar surveys nationally also have specic missions. “ey dene what their culture is about and they are relentless about hiring people that t their culture,” he said.Meanwhile, employees say they are looking for their bosses to make them feel included, Lauritsen said.
“e perception is it’s things like pet insurance and ping pong tables and things like that, tangible things, but the reality is you really can’t buy your way to a best work place,” Lauritsen said. “It’s not about stu it’s about things like … the leaders make themselves very ac-cessible and they make the business very transparent.
“e employees feel they are connected to senior leadership. ey feel like they know them and know who they are.”

BY JESSICA FARGENWhat is now Lincoln Surgical Hospital opened its doors in 1994 with just a handful of doctors performing eye surgeries and has grown into a multi-specialty hospital with more than 200 employees.Even with that growth, the physician-owned hospital has kept a focus on keeping patients and workers happy, said Robb Linafelter, CEO of the hospital near 70th and A streets.Lincoln Surgical Hospital was selected as the Best Place to Work in Lincoln among large companies, according to a 2014 Lincoln Journal Star survey.“e people that work here you can see by the low turnover they buy in to what we are doing,” said Linafelter, who has worked at the hospi-tal since its inception. “ey believe in the concept. Because we are 100 percent physician owned we really are able to be patient-focused (and) patient driven because it’s that physician and that nurse that are help-ing make decisions in this organization.”Turnover is 2.5 percent, said Michele Spadt, chief human resources ocer. Benets include a matching 401(k) plan, health insurance, a tness center with classes and a personal trainer and tuition reimburse-ment. On a recent evening aer work four people, including two of the founding physicians, were taking a tness class. e hospital was one of four Nebraska businesses in 2012 to receive Gov. Dave Heine-man’s Wellness Award in the “grower” category for showing signicant improvement in employee health. Some employees say it’s the atmosphere that has kept them there so long.
e sta works as a team, said Joyce Yontz, a registered nurse and an original employee. “ey are always willing to go the extra mile with a patient,” she said. “e management is very exible and supportive. If you have needs that arise they are always willing to work with you.”e hospital has a committee of employees who are charged with mak-ing sure the sta stays engaged. In addition, sta members are recog-nized for their years of service and celebrated each year with a health workers appreciation week.Aletha Sands, a registered nurse at the hospital for 16 years, said the nurse-patient ratio makes it easier for her to do her job. “I never feel like I’m overwhelmed giving patient care. I can spend ex-tra time with patients and that lets me do what I do best and that’s give good patient care,” she said. e hospital was founded as the Lincoln Surgery Center by ophthal-mologists and started with just two operating rooms. It has grown to include 10 specialties including podiatry, orthopaedics and spine surgery and nine operating rooms in 85,000 square feet. e hospital became Lincoln Surgical Hospital in 2003 and is owned by 34 physi-cians. ere are about 11,000 surgeries performed at the hospital each year.Linafelter, the CEO, said his philosophy is to let employees make deci-sions and avoid micromanaging the sta.“Our job as the administrative side is to make sure they have the tools (and) make sure they have the ability to get their job done without roadblocks,” he said. “If your employees aren’t happy your patients aren’t happy.”

At the 26 Lincoln oces of Edward Jones most of the employees are not just workers, they are partners in a national rm that boasts benets and a close-knit community.
Edward Jones, a nancial services rm, was named the Best Place to Work in Lincoln among medium-sized companies for 2014, accord-ing to an annual Lincoln Journal Star survey.
Edward Jones employs about 50 people in Lincoln. Every branch has a nancial advisor and typically one branch oce assistant.e rm oers traditional benets such as health insurance and a matching 401(k) plan as well as a partnership program that allows workers to own a small part of the business. “We are a partnership. We are not a corporation,” said Eric Hem-mingsen, 63, an Edward Jones nancial adviser for 31 years who manages an oce near 70th and O streets.
In addition, social gatherings such as a three-day retreat each year keep everyone connected, said Pam Clyne, a branch oce assistant in Hemmingsen’s oce for 13 years. Clyne, a partner, stays because of the benets and work culture.
“Everybody helps everybody,” said Clyne, 63. “It’s like a big family.”
e rm, founded in 1922 and based in St. Louis, operates nearly 10,800 oces in the United States and employs about 12,500 nan-cial advisors. e rm oers individualized nancial planning for long-term investors.
Edward Jones ranked eighth in FORTUNE magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 2013.Josh Huenergardt, 35, an Edward Jones nancial adviser for 13 years who just opened a new oce near Wilderness Ridge, likes being his own boss and working in the community of Edward Jones oces.“ere’s kind of like this common goal we are all working toward where we want to be the rst choice of the long-term investor over time,” he said. “It’s kind of this team mentality, but yet you are still able to embrace that entrepreneurial spirit.”Hemmingsen said the culture starts at the top with the rm’s man-aging partner, James D. Weddle.“I can call him right now and sometimes he even answers his own phone,” Hemmingsen said. “He’s a busy man with a huge rm like this, but he has an open door.”

At Waterford Assisted Living and Memory Care Center at College View don’t be surprised to see the activities director making patient beds or the CEO cleaning the oors.
The 30 employees at the elder care center on 48th Street are trained to do a variety of jobs and some of those tasks are not very glamorous. “I don’t mind mopping the oors,” saidCEO Eric Haider, who was hired in 2012 to turnaround the nancially-struggling center. “It’s not my job is not in anybody’s vocabulary.”
The Waterford at College View was selected as the Best Place to Work in Lincoln in the small company category in an annual Lincoln Journal Star survey. The assisted living center has about 50 patients including six with dementia.
Mary Kinney, the activities director, attributed the center’s success to Haider, who has three decades of experience working at elder care facilities. “He doesn’t just hear what you say, he listens,” she said. “When you have an idea he wants to hear it.”
Kinney, like a lot of the staff, is trained to give residents baths, clean and make beds and get the dining room ready. Most employees are paid an hourly rate, between $9 and $15, and there is no 401(k) plan for those workers. But, employees get paid time off.
Tuition reimbursement is also offered, said Dan Klein, who co-owns College View and two other Waterford elder care centers in Lincoln with his son, Dan Klein Jr.
“It’s a free gift we give to them,” he said. “We know they will further improve and be a better-trained better service provider for these elderly folks.”
For many, the most important benet is the supportive environment.
Katie Hammer, a receptionist at Waterford for nine months, likes Haider’s open door policy and the “teamwork bond” she has with her coworkers. “I love my job,” she said. “I wake up every morning excited to go to work.”
Haider attributes some of his success to a stringent hiring process. All prospective employees must pass a drug test and criminal background test and have a positive attitude. “I’m really picky about who I hire,” he said. After that, they are trained and brought into the fold.
“I believe that happy people do a good job and unhappy people have a ‘who cares’ attitude. If we provide a happy place for them they will do a better job,” he said. “(I) hire the right person the rst time so they will stay with us for a long time.”
