while many in lancaster andsouthern Dallas lost many of theirpossessions during the recent tor-nadoes that ripped through thearea, several individuals andgroups responded selflessly to as-sist their neighbors and strangersbring normalcy back into theirlives.

One of the first people to hit thestreets after the storm was diannegibson named “Miss Community”by radio personality Skip Murphy, looking for storm victims anddoing whatever she could to easethe pain and devastation that thestorm introduced into the lives ofso many innocent people.

“i was in a store when news ofthe storm came over the televi-sion,” said Ms. gibson. “i rushedback to City Hall where peoplelike Mayor Rawlings, Councilmantennell Atkins and CouncilwomanCarolyn Davis were coordinatingstorm relief activities.

“they went to the hardest hitareas on the day of the storm. i didnot get there until the next day,”

she said.Ms. gibson says that she has

worked with churches and non-profits such as Habitat for Human-ity to cut down trees and removetrash from the yards and homes ofresidents.

“the demonstration of love bypeople has been God inspired,”she said. “we went from house tohouse, knocking on doors to makesure that everyone was alive andwell.

“when we knocked on doors thefirst question that most peopleasked was whether or not theirneighbors had survived thestorm.”

Ms. gibson spoke to the familywhose house had been crushed bya tractor trailer truck.

“it was a blessing that they werenot home,” she said. “the crashdestroyed their bedrooms. theycould have been in their housesleeping. But saw fit to keep themalive.”

Ms. gibson praised the work ofcity elected officials for what theydid immediately after the storm.“they went right to work,” shesaid. “their first concern wasmaking sure that the people of thecity were safe,” she said.

Ms. gibson said that residents ofsouth Dallas and residents of lan-caster would continue to benefitfrom the goodwill and largess ofpeople of goodwill.

“i am a member of the ConcordBaptist Church,” she said. “weplan to join other faith institutionsand community groups in aidingthe people of lancaster. “there is a major clean-up effort

planned for April 28th. we aregoing everything that we can to re-store the lives of the people whowere impacted by the storm,” shesaid.

As a mother my heart bled when the killing oftrayvon Martin was announced nearly twomonths ago. Each night as i viewed the news iclosely watched the face of the youngman’s mother as she pleaded with the au-thorities in Sanford, Florida for an arrest inthe shooting death of her son. i could seethe pain on her face, and i could even feelher pain as she anguished after having tobury a young son at the age of seventeen.

Mothers know their children. they knowwhat they are capable of doing, and theyknow what they will not do. trayvon’smother knew that her son would be fright-ened when he was approached on a dark-ened Florida street by an armed man who he didnot know.

when she heard a voice on a recording plead-ing for his life, she knew that it was the voice ofher son, the same son who she breast fed, thesame son she walked to school on his first dayof kindergarten and the same son who sherocked to sleep when he had his first nightmare.

it is very interesting to see that trayvon’smother is not calling for the punishment of

George Zimmerman, the 28 year old who hasbeen arrested and charged with second degreemurder in the death of her son. She is simplycalling for justice for her own son.

A lesser person would have stirred the feel-ings of race that the incident has created.trayvon was a black youth and George Zimmer-man is a white Hispanic. She has called for racialhealing, for justice and for peace.

when a group of black radicals an-nounced a reward for the capture ofMr. Zimmerman, trayvon’s mothersaid that she opposed the idea. Shesaid that it was not in the spirit of theson who she had nurtured and raised.

trayvon’s mother knows that theeyes of the entire world are upon her.She has remained a portrait of graceand love while millions have lookedat her and watched her every move.

She raised a wonderful young son whose lifewas senselessly cut short.

now, she will have the day in court that shedeserves. But the ugly reality is that nothing, noverdict will bring back her smiling young son,the young son who brought her joy when heemerged from her womb. the young son sheworked to provide a living for, the young sonthat she lived for and that she buried long beforehis time.

WORD FROM THE PUBLISHERDebra Blair Abron

Minister of the Week Student of the Week

i have lived longer than most people whoare reading this newspaper. i have witnessedthe administrations of more United StatesPresidents than most people ever have orever will.

Over the years i have grown to become astudent of Presidential politics and in thiscolumn i would like to share my thoughtswith our readers about the next election.

For starters, President Barack Obamashould be re-elected and he should be re-elected overwhelmingly over the presumedRepublican presidential nominee, Mitt Rom-ney. Mr. Obama has done a marvelous job aspresident. in the past 18 months, the numberof jobs created has increased. Banks, underthe administration’s leadership, regainedtheir footing and the housing industry isbooming once again.

Voters in the states of Michigan and Ohio,i believe, will vote for Mr. Obama over Mr.Romney because when the auto industry wason its back, the President called for the inter-vention of the federal government. Mr. Rom-ney said that the auto industries should beallowed to go out of business.

that would have meant the elimination oftens of thousands of jobs in the automobileand related industry. today, the auto indus-try, having done well, has rebounded and aU.S. company is selling more cars than anyother in the world today. let’s be honest, there are a large number of

voters in the country who are against Presi-dent Obama simply because of the color ofhis skin. if he were their color, they wouldbe backing him with tremendous enthusiasm.Yet, there are others, people of sober mindsand good will, who will vote for Mr. Obama, even though he is of mixed ancestry. these are people who are concerned about

principle and not about prejudice. they werefor him in 2008 and i am convinced that theywill be for him in 2012.

it is interesting that Mr. Obama has nearlya 20 percent lead over Mr. Romney amongwomen voters. when he became Presidentone of his first pieces of legislation that wassigned into law was one guaranteeing thatwomen receive equal pay for the work thatthey do.

Raised by a single parent, his mother, Mr.Obama knows the special difficulties thatwomen face in this society, particularly thosewho are raising children by themselves andworking more than one job to make endsmeet.

Come november, women voters will rushto the polls to vote for Mr. Obama becausethey know that he has their best interests atheart. Mr. Romney does not understand their is-

sues nor does he understand their pain. i willbe standing in line waiting to vote just afterthe women who will help re-elect the Presi-dent.

they know the good that he has done andthey know the good that he will continue todo.

Dear Dr. Hollie,i have a dilemma. My sister and her husband had beenmarried for 23 years when she decided she was nothappy and left him. when they married, both familieshad misgivings about them marrying. Over the ensuingyears, they appeared to overcome those objections andmade a good life for their family.

they have one child who is now in college. She isdevastated over her parents’ separation, as is her father. My brother-in-law didn’t want the separation and triedto reconcile for over a year. My sister first claimed thatshe just wanted to be on her own. She insisted that shedid not want another man in her life. However, threemonths into the separation, she began seeing someoneseriously. She moved in with him and has lived withhim now for almost a year.

My brother-in-law has kept in contact with our fam-ily—even attending a few family gatherings when mysister was definitely not going to be there. we have oftendiscussed him getting back together with my sister. iwas all for reconciliation for a long time but her behaviorhas changed drastically since starting her “new” life. Shehas become self-centered and arrogant. She even saysshe believes she has outgrown our family and prefers tobe around her more sophisticated friends. She has notattended a family function in quite a while and we sel-dom receive even a phone call from her.

then, seemingly out of the blue, she stopped by myhouse today. Even more surprisingly, she told me thatshe was considering going back to her husband. As shecontinued to talk, i learned that the guy she was livingwith had been fired from his high-paying job and herlife style would consequently have to be downsized con-siderably. She also revealed that he was not likely to re-gain his social status.

She wants me to act as go-between for reconciliationwith her husband. the problem with that is that i knowhow much she hurt him and that he is just starting to gethis life back on track. He has met a nice young lady thatattends his church. And, though i know it’s not my de-cision, i don’t think she deserves him. As for the inputi’m being asked to give, i don’t want to have anythingto do with the possibility of them getting back togetherand her hurting him further. She says that as a Christian i shouldn’t sit in judgment

of her and that i should be excited to be a part of theirreunion. i told her that i would rejoice with them if theydo reunite. However, i don’t know if she wants himback because she loves him or because she no longerhas access to the “good life.” Am i being judgmental and unforgiving? Should i be

willing to get involved?Christianity vs. Realism

Dear Christianity,I think for this complicated matter you willbetter serve yourself by letting these grownfolks work out their own problems. I wouldn'ttry to figure it out or judge what's better foreither of them. If you stay out of it you willkeep your relationships intact.

Mark 4:35-4135That day when evening came, hesaid to his disciples, "Let us go overto the other side.”36Leaving thecrowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. Therewere also other boats with him. 37Afurious squall came up, and thewaves broke over the boat, so thatit was nearly swamped. 38Jesuswas in the stern, sleeping on acushion. The disciples woke himand said to him, "Teacher, don't youcare if we drown?" 39He got up, re-buked the wind and said to thewaves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then thewind died down and it was com-pletely calm. 40He said to his dis-ciples, "Why are you so afraid? Doyou still have no faith?" 41Theywere terrified and asked each other,"Who is this? Even the wind and thewaves obey him!"

it has been interesting to watchthe blame game during the re-cent disasters which hit thesouthern part of our country.the mayor was to blame. no, itwas the director of FEMA. no,it was the governor of the state.no, it was the people who re-fused to evacuate. no, it was thepeople who built the levees. no,it was the president. You knowwhat? it was a storm! And whena storm that size hits, no amountof human intervention couldhave prevented what happened.there will always be enormousloss of property and lives.Storms will come and stuff will

happen. Storms came in the life of

Jesus as well. He and the disci-ples found themselves in themiddle of a ferocious squall outon the lake. this was nothingunusual on the Sea of Galilee; itis in a basin surrounded bymountains and notorious for fu-rious storms. Rising just to thenorth over the lake is beautifulMount Hermon. Mount Hermonis capped with snow, and some-times the cold air from the topof Mount Hermon rushes downthe mountain and blows acrossthe lake. the force of the coldair meeting the hot moist airaround Galilee can be explo-sive, as it was on the day in ourstory. Jesus and his friends arein the middle of the lake whenthe squall hits. it is terrifyingand it looks as though they willnot survive the storm. whathappens next is something forwhich neither the reader nor thedisciples are prepared.

Allow me to point out someobvious and simple lessonsfrom this story. the first is:Storms will come. the apostlePeter reminds us in 1st Peter4:12 it says, “Dear friends, donot be surprised at the painfultrial you are suffering, as thoughsomething strange were happen-ing to you.” there are manywho do not seem to understand

this. the disciples seemed to beshocked that they were in thisposition. After all, was not Jesuswith them? would not God pro-tect his Messiah, and thereforeprotect his followers? How thencould this happen? i sometimesmeet people who have the samefeeling of shock when somestorm comes into their lives.Did not i do all the right things?is not God supposed to watchout for his own? Does not heprotect those he loves? How canthis be happening to me? i amsure those are the questionswhich were marching throughthe heads of the disciples.

i was reading in the book ofHebrews this past week and icame across a fascinating pas-sage. it was talking about Abra-ham and the wonderfulpromises God made to him, butthen this verse popped out at methat says, in Hebrews 6:15,“And so after waiting patiently,Abraham received what waspromised.” Amen! i was read-ing it in the original languagewhich puts it much stronger.

it uses the word macrothumiawhich can be translated “long-suffering.” that would make itsay, “And so after longsuffering,Abraham received what waspromised.” God made a greatpromise to Abraham, but inorder to receive it, Abraham had

to go through longsuffering.this is life, even with the prom-ises of God. Endurance andfaith are the keys, and thesethings are only possible becauseof the promises and faithfulnessof God.

the Bible says in Hebrews6:19, “we have this hope as ananchor for the soul, firm and se-cure.” Amen!

there are some people read-ing this week’s message inwhose life a storm is raging. Forsome of you it is financial. Forothers it is a health issue. Stillothers are being swamped in thearea of relationships. You havetried to be a good person and dothe right thing, and yet you feellike you are sinking, and youwant to know the same thing thedisciples wanted to know:“Jesus, do not you care if idrown? Are you aware of whati am going through?”

what is interesting is thatwhen Matthew and luke tellthis story in their gospels, theyleave out this question aboutwhether Jesus cared about themand their perilous situation.Matthew and luke simplyrecord the words of the disciplesas, “lord, save us! we are goingto drown! If you would like the entire mes-

sage please contact me at:[email protected]

The greatest and best thing that happenswhen we pray is that we are changed andtransformed; maybe not in one prayer ex-perience, but certainly through the daysand the years. It is unfortunate that most ofhave a narrow, childish concept of prayer. We think of it as asking some special favorand getting it. We treat it as though it doesnot involve a spiritual relationship of manwith God and God with man. Blessed is theman who prays; “Have thine own way Lord, have thine own way!” Thou art the potter;and I am the clay. Mold me and make me,after thine own will, while I am waiting, yielded and still.

Rebuilding Our CommunityBy Sherry ChristianElite News Staff

“History, although sometimes made up ofthe few acts of the great, is more oftenshaped by the many acts of the small” andin this past Saturdays meeting for the Menand Boy’s conference it was great to hearCorey toney of “no limit Bail Bonds andCt’s Real Deal Bar-B-Que a owner of suc-cessful black businesses as well as a resi-dent of Dallas, who was speaking onrebuilding our community and James tal-ley a Certified Public Accountant withwealth Building and Founding CEO ofJ.H. talley CPA’s.

Mr. toney opened up his message with apassage out of the Bible (nehemiah 1:3)talking about how the “walls were torndown” in Jerusalem and how the peopleof israel were left with no protection intheir city. which leads us to the questionat hand how can we rebuild our commu-nity?

And issue a protective sense of security, all at the same time. for 1): the love for ourneighbors has grown cold, our Mom andPop stores are no longer in our communi-ties, and some of our community leadershave no desire to rebuild within our com-munities. For 2) when you think of theblack community and the percentage ofblack owned businesses have declinedtremendously, why? it is do to buyer attri-tion in relations to black on black busi-ness’s, the late great Dr. Martin lutherKing Jr was once quoted as saying “in a

multiracial society, no group can make italone….Organized strength will only beeffective when it is consolidated throughconstructive alliances with the majoritygroup.”

the Black community is at a crossroadswhere our Youngman are concerned andhow we effectively deal with this crisis. SoMen and Boy’s conference to the rescue asCorey toney and larry taylor led a chargeto bring our young men to Christ and lead-ership in conjunction with nFl Footballplayer Greg Ellis of the Oakland Raidersand formerly of the Dallas Cowboys,Brother Johnny Brown who spoke on

How the district earns the desig-nation of “A leader in Urban Pub-lic Education” depends on severalfactors, including the selection of astrong and proactive superinten-dent, which i believe we have ac-complished. it will take some workon everyone’s part, starting with theBoard of trustees.

the Board has developed ninegoals to shape Dallas iSD into themechanism necessary to move thedistrict to a higher level of perform-ance. these goals address highlyeffective teachers and school lead-ers; safe, secure and welcoming en-vironments; shared responsibility;rigorous curriculum; a positive andcompassionate culture; professionaldevelopment; data driven deci-sions; supportive central services;and, well-maintained facilities.

Each goal has defined strategies. However, goals and strategies with-out adequate resources for success-ful implementation are mere wordson paper. So, what are our nextsteps?

the Board is primed to moveforward. Several schools are mak-ing great strides in many areas. Ourgraduation rate is the highest it hasbeen since 1983. the Council ofthe Great City Schools has declaredDallas iSD one of the nation’sfastest improving urban school dis-

tricts. But, there is much work tobe done. will you help?

Over the next few years, all ofDallas must step up to the plate, prepared to address our responsibil-ities to our children; the future ofDallas depends on it. i believe the

first step is visualizing the DallasiSD as America’s Premier UrbanDistrict. it’s using whatever levelof creativity you possess to see thedistrict in this new light and believethe vision is possible. Believing thevision can lead to ownership of thegoals and acceptance of your role inmaking the vision a reality, regard-less of how little or large that rolemay be. what role will you play?

However, the belief can only be-come as concrete as the people who

take part in making things happen.Citizens across Dallas, includingMayor Mike Rawlings, have cho-sen to partner with the district tomake a difference. the opportuni-ties to join the drive to greatness arevast and can begin in every homeand classroom across Dallas. whatabout you?

the Board of trustees and dis-trict staff must acknowledge, acceptand put into action our role, withpurpose and intent, supporting thesuperintendent’s reforms. Parentsand families need to encourage andsupport all children to strive to bethe best in every endeavor. neigh-borhoods need to aid their commu-nity schools by providing fiscal, physical and human resources.Businessesand faith-based enti-ties, smalland large, must joinhands withDallas iSDs c h o o l sand admin-i s t ra t ion .we allhave some-thing tooffer. it’sjust a mat-

ter of finding where and how youcan make a contribution. what isyour role?

we cannot continue on the roadwe have been traveling. it is imper-ative we move in corridors of re-form and innovation using creativeand engaging approaches that placeevery student at or above gradelevel. Along with other districts,we can set common core standardsthat are not solely state test-based.Hand-in-hand with area social serv-ice resources, we can help meet themultitude of student needs that im-pact the educational process. Howwill you help?

Every road we travel must takeour students closer to the ultimateacademic achievement, college and

career readiness. And we have to dothis within the budgetary and otherrestraints under which we operate.i believe it can be done. what aboutyou?

Visualize and believe in DallasiSD. Join the effort. Contact alocal school, or call the Office ofCommunity Relations at 972-925-3920 to discuss how you can be-come engaged. will you call today?

As always, i am available tomeet with your organization to dis-cuss these opportunities and themany successes in Dallas iSD ingeneral and in District 5 in particu-lar. Contact my office at 972-925-3718 to schedule a meeting withyour group. And, follow me onFacebook and twitter.

"Run Baby Run," these were the cheersfrom parents at the District Championshipslast week.

this is play-off time for track and fieldathletes all over the Metroplex. track ath-letes run about 10 track meets a year, all ofthese track meets are important, but thereare three track meets that are very impor-tant. there is the district championsiphs, the regional championships, and the statechampionships. in order to advance youhave to win!!

last week the track and field world wason fire! Big time sprinter Araham Hall of-South Grand Prairie had every body talkingafter he was reportedly clocked in a time of9.74 in the 100 meter dash. the officialsstated that it was some type of malfunctionwith the time clock, this was funny to mebecause i've been around track all my lifeand i have seen high schoolers run some re-markable times! i saw Roy"Robot" Martinrun the 100 meters under 10 seconds, i sawBobby"turbo"Johnson run the 100 meters

in under 10 sec-onds, i sawHenry neal blazethe 100 meters inunder 10 sec-onds. it's nothard for me tobelieve that Hallran the 100 me-

ters under 10 seconds, Hall is one of the topsprinters in the state this year and i can be-lieve he can run under 10 seconds in the100 meters, after the time was converted histime was 10.2 which is about the averagetime of the top sprinters in this area. Hallhas been a dominant sprinter all season andis one of the favorites to win the regionalchampionship.Hall qualified for the statechampionship last year.

this city has always been known to havethe top sprinters in the state and this yearis no different.

the Desoto Eagles showed that they area force to be reckoned with. the Eagleswon the 4x 100 meter relay, the Eagles wonthe 4x 200 meter relay and the Eagles wonthe 4x400 meter relay. the Eagles also hadtwo sprinters advance to the regional cham-pionships with tramine Acy and RidgeJones run a fantastic 100 meter dash. thebest race of the weekend was the 200 meterdash that was won by Desoto's Dontre wil-son. wilson ran one of the strongest 200

meter races that i've seen in a long time!this young sprinter ran the curve and con-tinued to push through the back stretch hisaggresive running style made the other run-ners quite! His time was 21.1 but the sec-ond place time was 21.7 needless to say heblew the competition off the track!

the Eagle's are taking 3 relays to the re-gional championships and a host of indi-

viduals, this could lead to a regional cham-pionship and possibly a state champi-onship.

But just remember this is play-off time, win it or go home. So with two meets leftnobodies track team can come to "See theShow" you have to come to "Be theShow"!!!Good luck to all!!!
